Abstract IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system with its integrated IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client solution enables enterprises to back up and restore data in a minimum time period. It increases efficiency, performance, and reliability of the backup and restore operations. Taking a full backup every time ensures reliability of backups. However, not all the data changes every time a new backup is invoked and the time required for a full backup increases the backup window. In order to reduce duplication of backed up data, you need to back up only those files and objects that have been changed or created since last backup. This identification can be done with a full file system traversal using standard system calls but the time increases linearly with the number of objects in the file system. IBM General Parallel File System (IBM GPFS) policy engine embedded in the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules scan the i-node table of a file system, which is much faster than the conventional system calls, reducing the overall time required for the backup. Storwize V7000 Unified system also leverages both the file modules in the backup process to further reduce the time needed for backups. This paper provides guidelines for planning, setup, configuration, and use cases for taking advantage of the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules’ integrated Tivoli Storage Manager backup capability.

Integration of IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules with Tivoli Storage Manager The Storwize V7000 Unified system is designed for file as well as block storage provisioning with the capacity to store large amount of file data on the file modules. Obviously, working with large amount of data and large number of files takes longer duration and this leads to longer duration of backup in today's industry, where there is a demand to reduce backup duration. To meet this requirement, the backup facility in the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules has been optimized by providing a fully-integrated Tivoli Storage Manager client within file modules.

Benefits of the integrated Tivoli Storage Manager solution over Conventional backup methods

Figure 2: Integrated Tivoli Storage Manager Solution with Storwize V7000 Unified system

6

In conventional backup method, the backup software can back up data from the shares exported from Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules mounted on the NFS or CIFS clients. Backup software is installed on each NFS or CIFS client and data is backed up over the network to the backup server. Integrated Tivoli Storage Manager Solution with Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules provides the following advantages: 

   

Tivoli Storage Manager Client is preinstalled on the file modules of the Storwize V7000 Unified system and data is directly backed up from file modules to the backup server, as shown in Figure 2. Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules have an integrated IBM General Parallel File System (IBM GPFS™) policy scan engine to scan the i-node table of a file system, which is much faster than the conventional system calls, reducing the overall time required for the backup. Storwize V7000 Unified system leverages both its file modules for backing up the data to improve performance and distribute load across both the file modules. Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules can establish several sessions with Tivoli Storage Manager Server. Existing Tivoli Storage Manager Server environment can be leveraged to back up Storwize V7000 Unified system. Multiple Tivoli Storage Manager Servers can be configured to back up different GPFS file system to spread backup workload across multiple backup servers.

Integrated Tivoli Storage Manager backup solution features With Integrated Tivoli Storage Manager solution, administrators of Storwize V7000 Unified system can:   

   

Set up, configure, and monitor backups or restores through a unified and simplified GUI, CLI, or Storwize V7000 Unified system. Perform scheduled or manual backup of a GPFS file system using the Storwize V7000 Unified system GUI or CLI. Perform restores of several single file system objects, objects according to the file patterns, entire directory tree, directories, and all subdirectories or an entire file system from the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Query the previous or active backup sessions. Monitor the backups or restore sessions through the Storwize V7000 Unified system GUI or CLI. Set up and configure event notification to receive email notification after each backup using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server. Synchronize a file system with the Tivoli Storage Manager Server database.

Planning for IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system backups with Tivoli Storage Manager Planning is one of the most important areas for consideration before beginning to use Tivoli Storage Manager for the Storwize V7000 Unified system backup. It is important that the backup administrator and the Storwize V7000 Unified system administrator work together to anticipate the circumstances in which recovery of data from the Storwize V7000 Unified system is required, as well as to anticipate the amount of data needed to be backed up to the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Initial requirements of Tivoli Storage Manager for Storwize V7000 Unified system The following are the initial requirements of Tivoli Storage Manager for the Storwize V7000 Unified system. 

Tivoli Storage Manager Server is installed and licensed in the customer network, outside the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Refer to Tivoli Storage Manager Info Center for more information on the installation and supported platforms for Tivoli Storage Manager Server. This section also assumes that the customer has an appropriate (disk or tape) storage available and knows how to define it to the Tivoli Storage Manager server that has existing storage pools to store the Storwize V7000 Unified system backups. Each backup node needs to be licensed on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Time synchronize the Tivoli Storage Manager server with the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Otherwise, configuring and running the backup or restore jobs on the Storwize V7000 Unified system might fail. Multiple Tivoli Storage Manager Servers can back up the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Verify that all the Tivoli Storage Manager servers are connected to the network and are reachable from the file modules of Storwize V7000 Unified system. It is possible to have one Tivoli Storage Manager Server configured per GPFS file system but it is not possible to have multiple Tivoli Storage Manager Servers backing up the same GPFS file system. Verify that the Tivoli Storage Manager servers are compatible with the Tivoli Storage Manager Client version on the Storwize V7000 Unified system.

Tivoli Storage Manager Server configuration for Storwize V7000 Unified system Before configuring the Storwize V7000 Unified system backup, you need to perform the following steps to configure the Tivoli Storage Manager server correctly. Sample configuration commands are mentioned in this section. 1. Separately register each Storwize V7000 Unified system file module that needs to participate in the backup as a Tivoli Storage Manager node on the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Figure 3: An Example of register nodes

Backing up and implementing an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager solution on the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system

8

In addition to both the file modules, register an additional node on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. This Tivoli Storage Manager node is called proxy Tivoli Storage Manager Node and allows access to a single file space on the Tivoli Storage Manager server for all the backup nodes. This node is used as the node independent of the file modules from which the files get backed up to the Tivoli Storage Manager server, thus allowing restores from any file module back into the system.

Figure 4: An example of registering a proxy node

2. Grant proxy to all the Tivoli Storage Manager nodes related to file module to access additional Tivoli Storage Manager Nodes on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. After configuring the nodes, query the configured nodes from the Tivoli Storage Manager server to verify the configuration.

Figure 5: An example of granting proxy to the nodes

3. Set the Tivoli Storage Manager Server authentication to ON.

Table 1: Concurrent Tivoli Storage Manager backup and restore usage with other Storwize V7000 Unified system functions

The information in Table 1 helps you identify the Storwize V7000 Unified system features and functions that might be concurrently used on the same file modules of the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Notes: 1. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager backup / restore and NDMP backup / restore provide the same basic functionality of backing up or restoring file systems and the directories and files within the file systems. It is not recommended and not supported to have both Tivoli Storage Manager backup restore processing and NDMP backup restore processing being used on the same Storwize V7000 Unified system for file modules. 2. Tivoli Storage Manager backups are normally scheduled operations that can be scheduled at a time when other activity, such as general purpose file serving, is low. If possible, it is recommended performing backups during periods when other file serving activity is generally lower, perhaps late in the evening or early in the mornings. 3. Tivoli Storage Manager backup or restore processing significantly interferes with other Storwize V7000 Unified system file access functions, such as network file serving (CIFS, NFS, FTP, and HTTP). Many file module functions invoke the GPFS policy engine to evaluate a GPFS policy to determine the list of files to operate on. These include: a. Tivoli Storage Manager backup processing b. Tivoli Storage Manager HSM processing c. NDMP incremental backup processing d. Asynchronous replication processing e. The runpolicy CLI command and others

Backing up and implementing an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager solution on the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system

23

The GPFS policy engine scans the file system metadata to determine the files that match the criteria specified in the policy. This scan of the file system metadata can generate a significant amount of I/O to the storage systems to read all the file system metadata, especially for file systems containing very large number of files. Therefore, it is recommended not to start all of these file access functions at exactly the same time, but instead stagger these functions over time.

HSM feature on the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system using Tivoli Storage Manager IBM Storwize V7000 system file modules use the HSM feature to migrate the data from the file modules to Tivoli Storage Manager Server. While it would be ideal to have all the data available on the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules all the time, this might be expensive for many organizations. The HSM feature of the Storwize V7000 Unified system can migrate bulk of the data to the Tivoli Storage Manager server, and then migrate it back to the Storwize V7000 Unified system whenever accessed. HSM data migrations take advantage of GPFS high-speed policy engine. User-defined GPFS policies migrate the data from IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules to Tivoli Storage Manager. When the GPFS policy migrates the data from the file modules to the external Tivoli Storage Manager server, a small stub is left behind in the GPFS file system indicating that the file has been migrated. Any reference to read or update a migrated file causes the file to be recalled from the Tivoli Storage Manager server to the Storwize V7000 Unified system for processing. For configuring the HSM feature on IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system using Tivoli Storage Manager refer to the section of Managing Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management from IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) information center online.

38

Tivoli Storage Manager for Storwize V7000 Unified system block I/O accessed files and volumes One of the flexible features of the Storwize V7000 Unified storage system is that it is designed to consolidate block and file workloads into a single storage system for simplicity of management, reduced cost, highly-scalable capacity, performance, and high availability. Tivoli Storage Manager can be used to back up and restore both the file and block data. The Storwize V7000 Unified file module data is backed up using the integrated Tivoli Storage Manager client as discussed in this paper. But, block files and volumes are backed up from the host system, where the files and volumes are assigned. The host, acting as the Tivoli Storage Manager client, accesses the block storage through a Fibre Channel or iSCSI network, and transfers the backup data to the Tivoli Storage Manager server or from the Tivoli Storage Server, in the case of a restore. If you already have Tivoli Storage Manager in your data center, this is the same way that block data is handled for your existing block storage devices. An additional product that should be considered for block data backup and restore is Tivoli Storage Manager for SANs, which allows backup and restore data to travel over the SAN from the host server (Tivoli Storage Manager client) directly to the Tivoli Storage Manager server managed devices. This configuration referred to as LAN-free backup/restore removes data transfer from the LAN, providing highperformance backup/restore and minimizing LAN network traffic, improving application performance and transaction response times on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. LAN-free backup/restore is particularly effective for large files and volumes, such as those used in databases. Guidance for configuring a host accessing Storwize V7000 block data as a Tivoli Storage Manager client can be found in the Tivoli Storage Manager Information Center.

Recommendations The IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system backup performance using Tivoli Storage Manager can be influenced by various factors. The factors that can affect performance and have significant effects include:        

Average file size on GPFS file system of Storwize V7000 Unified system Number of files in a GPFS file system Percentage of files changed since last backup Percentage of bytes changed since last backup Network configuration (that is,1 GbE or 10 GbE) on Storwize V7000 Unified system used for backup Tivoli Storage Manager server hardware (processors, RAM, disk drives, network adapters) Tivoli Storage Manager server storage pool devices (disk, tape, optical) Tivoli Storage Manager server operating system Backing up and implementing an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager solution on the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system

40

   

Network utilization Network reliability Communication protocol tuning Final output repository type (disk, tape, optical)

In order to get optimum backup performance from the Storwize V7000 Unified system, you need to consider various factors, such as network infrastructure and network configuration between Storwize V7000 Unified system and Tivoli Storage Manager Server, and tuning Tivoli Storage Manager Server performance. Tuning of Tivoli Storage Manager requires care and expertise. The following recommendations can help you minimize performance impact to the system. 

It is recommended to configure both the file modules of the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system to send backup data to the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server. This allows both the file modules to participate in a backup operation effectively, improving the performance.

Configure jumbo frames on the Storwize V7000 Unified system and on the Tivoli Storage Manager server to boost network performance. In computer networking, jumbo frames are Ethernet frames with more than 1,500 bytes of payload [maximum transfer unit (MTU)]. Conventionally, jumbo frames can carry up to 9,000 bytes of payload. It is recommended to set MTU of an interface to 9,000 bytes.

As a guideline, use disk pool as a primary storage pool and have sufficient space to back up Storwize V7000 Unified system data. −

Provide a sufficiently large disk pool behind the Tivoli Storage Manager server to buffer all the files that are being migrated during a Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management task, typically 10% to 20% of the file system size, to avoid complications caused by tape mount point limits.

Provide a sufficient number of tape drives to the Tivoli Storage Manager server to avoid mount point limit contention.

Use a virtual tape library behind the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

As a guideline for faster backup performance, consider having higher network speed (10 GbE) between the file modules of the Storwize V7000 Unified system and the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Each file module can open up to eight sessions on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. By default, resource utilization in the file modules of the Storwize V7000 Unified system is set to 10. Therefore, the Tivoli Storage Manager server should set its maximum connections to accommodate this. A recommended value for this is 100 sessions.

Sufficient reserve space must be available on a GPFS file system of the file modules of the Storwize V7000 Unified system before Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management can be used.

41

Following Tivoli Storage Manager server parameters can be considered for improving the backup performance −

DBMEMPERCENT AUTOMATIC (default)

MAXSESSIONS 25 (default)

MOVEBATCHSIZE 1000 (default)

MOVESIZETHRESH 32768

RESTOREINTERVAL 1440 (default)

TCPNODELAY YES (default)

TCPWINDOWSIZE 63 KB (preferred default settings)

TCPWINDOWSIZE 128 KB (for a Gigabit Ethernet with 9000 byte MTU jumbo frames)

TXNGROUPMAX 4096 (default)

Refer to the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Performance Tuning Guide at ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSGSG7_6.3.4/com.ibm.itsm.perf.doc/b_perf_tuning_guide.p df?lang=en for more information on backup performance considerations. 

During registration of the proxy node on the Tivoli Storage Manager server, it is recommended to set MAXNUMMP with the value, 999.

Inventory expiration option is used to remove client backup and archive file copies from the server. Expiration processing consumes processor cycles, and therefore, it is recommended to run it when other Tivoli Storage Manager processes are not occurring. To enable this, set EXPINTERVAL to 0 and either schedule expiration to occur once each day, or manually start the process with the EXPIRE INVENTORY server command.

If IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file module’s multiple file system are configured for Tivoli Storage Manager Backups or HSM purposes, consider having multiple Tivoli Storage Manager Servers to avoid performance bottleneck.
