What Is my Jewish Mission Statement?

Dear Friends, Most American Jews are fiercely proud of their Jewishness and much less concerned about their Judaism. In other words though they have a deep ethnic pride they are less interested in Jewish religion and spirituality. Most American Jews probably don't ask or maybe even reflect much on their Jewish beliefs; our parents and grandparents certainly did not. Even so their generation was much more familiar with Jewish practices and culture. They went to synagogue, supported Israel, Hadassah, B'nai B'rith, etc. Fourth and fifth generation American Jews do have spiritual yearnings as well but in some cases see themselves as secular and therefore look to eastern meditative practices, yoga and even the gym to meet their spiritual needs. While there is great value in these practices they can be

even more powerful when combined and enriched with Jewish spiritual knowledge and observance. For me, the summer months before the High Holy Days offer an opportunity to reappraise my own spiritual status. I don't want to live my life more out of habit than conviction. Just as it's a given in the business world that we update our company mission statement periodically, so why not revisit our own personal Jewish mission statement on a regular basis? In fact, as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur roll around, the tradition calls upon us to do just that. There is even a Hebrew term for it - cheshbon nefesh - an accounting of the soul. The attainment of spiritual health requires us to grapple with some of the ultimate spiritual questions: Are we living up to our potential to help improve the community? Are we struggling, even a little, to go beyond our personal spiritual comfort zones? Are we as deeply connected to Torah as our spiritual moorings as we could be? Judaism-Jewish belief and practice has for 3,000 years accumulated spiritual resources so that we can engage with questions such as these. Don't be intimidated. Small steps add up. Try it out.

Kol HaKavod Have you heard Kol HaKavod, our youth choir, sing? They have been busy preparing for a musical milestone in their lives, recording for an album that will hit stores and itunes in the coming year! I am SO proud of what the youth choir has accomplished in just 2 short years. They have performed at Pacific Inn, at every Shir Shabbat, the Sisterhood Hanukkah parties, Michael Mitzvah Days, LA Kings Jewish pride night at Staples Center, and now, they are going to be on an album!!! Yes, that’s right! In June, Kol HaKavod, will be heading to Orange County to record Sim Shalom by the up and coming Jewish composer, Seth Marlon Ettinger. Ettinger heard our choir sing at the LA Kings game this past January, and shortly after, told me that he thinks one of his pieces would be perfect for our choir. He asked them to learn and record the piece on his new album. Moreover, this is not an amateur gig; it is a professional experience for these young singers. It doesn’t end here. I have big plans in store for these wonderful young voices! They will be featured this year in the High Holy Day services, they will participate in multiple mitzvah performances next year, this recording will lead to others, and their potential is limitless. I feel honored to be their fearless leader, sing with them, and impart in them what I love and connect to in Jewish music. Do you want your child to be part of this fantastic youth choir? Look for parent meeting dates and audition sign ups in the August and September Menorah message.

Temple Menorah Continues to be Ecologically Minded In the spirit of saving natural resources, we would like to encourage you to consider changing your billing cycle to quarterly, semi-annual, or annual statements. This relatively small change will have a significant impact on the amount of resources we use to prepare your statements and will not only save many trees (paper and envelopes) but will also save considerable time and funds (postage, printing, folding, etc.). Please call or email Robin Franko at [email protected] to setup your preferred billing cycle. We thank you for your support! Hello, my name is Andrew Czuzak and I am looking forward to working on my Eagle Scout project at Temple Menorah on June 10. At Temple Menorah, I plan to work on the Tuvia preschool yard, specifically by sealing the retaining wall around the sandbox, fixing the rolling planter boxes, and also replacing the dirt in the wooden planter box. I would really appreciate Temple Menorah's support for my Eagle Project and I hope to see you there.

7 Grade Siyyum and

This fall Phase I of our Tuvia playground renovation will be complete bringing years of learning, play, development and growth, enrichment, joy and community-building, to our community! Thanks to the AMAZING efforts of our Tuvia Playground Committee: Evy Jacobson (chair), Aaron Krouse, Peter and Megan Cotugno, Anna I sl amo v, R an di She r, Ca r ol Andrykowski, Mort and Judy Liner, and Cathleen Richland for all of their hard work and diligence in helping us reach this first phase of our playground improvement process. Through the kindness and generosity of our Temple Menorah community, Tuvia families, Tuvia Parent Committee, Temple Menorah Board, Temple Menorah Sisterhood, friends and family members of Maureen Liner, Tuvia grandparents, Wells Fargo, Lowy Enterprises, O’Neil Industries, and W.E. O’Neil Construction Company of California, we have raised nearly $90,000! We are excited to break ground on August 20, 2012. Our Tuvia students and younger Religious School students will be enjoying a beautiful, newly-renovated playground by the start of the 2012-2013 school year. In September we will have a special dedication in memory of our beloved Maureen Liner and in honor of our Playground Committee. Additional information will provided as we get closer to our start date! We extend our deepest gratitude to all those involved in helping our school, facility and community to truly blossom through this project.

Mitzvah Projects My Bat Mitzvah project is based on my love of nature and photography. I believe that we can raise awareness to preserve nature through images that illustrate how amazing and magical our world is. I’m selling my pictures on web sites that are set up for this purpose (www.123rf.com / www.istockphoto.com) and will raise money for the National Parks Foundation. Hopefully, through devoting time and energy to this cause, we can show people that they have only one world and that it’s our responsibility to take care of it. Thank you, Emma Marco

Past Successes Temple Menorah continued its role as an active social participant during the first part of 5772, conducting “Michael Mitzvah Day”, held annually to commemorate the life of Michael Porzucki. Long-time Temple members and Michael’s parents; co-chairs Joe and Elaine Porzucki report that over 150 of our local South-Bay homeless neighbors came to Temple Menorah where they received food, entertainment, clothing, and shoes all at no charge. As always, our Temple youth pitched in for kitchen and serving help. Many of those attending were heard to remark that this was the best event ever held at "that Jewish place in Redondo Beach." On April 15 thirteen synagogue members joined forces with Jewish World Watch in their 4th annual Orange Country Walk to End Genocide. This event helps generate funds and increase awareness of the ongoing genocide in Darfur while as it strives to eliminate genocide worldwide. Thanks to all our Temple members who participated in the fundraising effort by walking or donating; together, we contributed $2,000; and hope for increased numbers in 2013.
