It is a day to honor those workers who have died on the job, to acknowledge the grievous suffering experienced by families and communities, and to recommit ourselves to the fight for safe and healthful workplaces for all workers. It is also the day OSHA was established in 1971. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their workers.

Two OSHA short courses count as one elective towards your Certified Safety & Health Official (CSHO)

This course builds upon the material covered in the LS 101 Course on the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code requirements. Participants will receive training on the application of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code requirements to specific building use based upon the occupancy classification system for Assembly Occupancies. Fires in assembly occupancies have been some of the most deadly when the prescribed features, systems, and construction materials were not present. NFPA code provisions mandate that a considerable number of safety systems and features be present in order to keep everyone safe should an unwanted fire occur. The level of safety provided is not the result of any single safety system or feature, but rather is achieved through the combination of multiple safeguards. It covers code provisions and requirements for protecting concentrations of occupants in assembly occupancies, the unique rules for assembly and education occupancies, occupant load factors, student fire safety needs, the unique challenges of large numbers of occupants, and exit access. This course is designed for building managers, facility engineers, safety and health professionals, engineers, architects, building owners, and insurers.

This course will use a combination of illustrated case studies, lectures, and individual and group exercises to introduce students to the various facets, methodologies, tools, and practical applications of risk-informed decision making. One goal of the course is to help students make better risk-informed decisions by introducing more structured decision-making processes that focuses on five critical, yet interrelated, steps: Identifying potential undesired outcomes; assigning an order-of-magnitude consequence severity to each outcome; assigning an order-of-magnitude occurrence likelihood to each outcome; assessing total risk magnitude; making risk-informed decisions based on assessed risk magnitudes.

This four-day course will teach participants advanced skills in conducting accident investigations that will aid in determining contributing factors that lead to the injury or fatality and how to develop a course of action to prevent future problems. Participants will also learn the importance of conducting a thorough investigation in a consistent manner that will, if necessary, stand up in court. Topics also include calculation of the costs, direct and indirect, associated with an accident. Coursework includes lecture, in-class workshops and case studies, and out-of-class work.

NOTES & NEWS Master Certificate in Construction Management The Division for Enterprise Development (DED) in partnership with the College of Engineering introduces a new Certificate program.

Outreach Training Portal The Outreach Training Portal is a web-based application designed with our trainers in mind to provide a more efficient and reliable method of requesting Outreach cards. Portal Features: •

Student cards delivered to the Outreach Trainer preprinted with the student name, trainer name, and expiration date.

Recordkeeping and reporting capabilities reduce paperwork and provide a centralized location for all program reports.

Electronic submissions reduce administrative time associated with submitting paper reports.

Access to the Training Resources webpage with training materials for upcoming classes, such as PowerPoint presentations and handouts.

About the Outreach Training Program The United States Department of Labor OSHA Outreach Training Program provides training for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces. The program also provides information regarding workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. This is a voluntary program and does not meet training requirements for any OSHA standards. Through this program, workers can attend 10-hour or 30hour classes delivered by OSHA-authorized trainers. The 10-hour class is intended for entry level workers, while the 30-hour class is more appropriate for workers with some safety responsibility. Through this training, OSHA helps to ensure that workers are more knowledgeable about workplace hazards and their rights, and contribute to our nation’s productivity. For more information about the Outreach Training Program or on using the Outreach Portal, contact our office at (866) 906-9190 or [email protected].
