Based on a non-comprehensive analysis of titles available in the ‘Arthouse and World Cinema’ category of DVDs and Blu-Ray titles listed on New Zealand retail platform MightyApe.co.nz. German titles appeared to consist mainly of films recently released theatrically in New Zealand and (the majority) auteur movies from the directors who emerged from the New German Cinema movement of the 1970s.

(4) AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND: COMMENTARY The first thing that needs to be said is that Australia and New Zealand are quite distinct from one another both culturally and geographically. Both have seen a shift in the ethnic balance of their populations away from the waves of British and Irish immigration that settled the countries in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries; but they remain as different in many respects as one would expect from the geographical distance between them (they are as far apart as London and Moscow). In cinematic terms, however, they are often lumped together – not as closely as the US and Canada, but with New Zealand treated (to the despair of New Zealanders) as an offshore subsidiary, much as Ireland is seen as a part of the UK market. There is some justification for this: the same films are released at around the same time, often by partner distribution companies – a situation which is especially marked in the foreign language and arthouse markets, where market leaders Madman and Rialto operate across both territories. Per capita attendance is roughly equivalent, and box office and admissions are proportionate: Australia’s population and annual box-office figures are roughly five and a half those of New Zealand. There can, however, be a marked difference in the performance of individual titles, both mainstream and arthouse; CLOUD ATLAS, for instance, was the fifth highest grossing German film of the five-year period in Australia, but was not even released theatrically in New Zealand; and BARBARA performed proportionally 10 times better in New Zealand than it did in Australia. One area which has seen a growth spurt in both territories is the programming of ‘live’ transmissions of (London) West End and Broadway successes, which now have a substantial market share in both Australia and New Zealand, with between 30 and 40 examples released annually. Although the number of screens in Australia peaked in 2013, the country, with its state-of-the-art cinema circuits and high standard of living, remains a key territory for North American movies, being the second-largest English-language market outside North America. But, with most of its 22 million population living in and around its five main cities (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth) and with those cities separated by large distances, it has tended to be a more problematic market for arthouse and foreign-language titles, with films from Europe (excluding the UK) accounting for only around 10% of all titles released in Australia theatrically each year. Given that New Zealand has a population of just over four million (only slightly more than that of Berlin), the opportunities for theatrical distribution of arthouse titles are necessarily limited, with arthouse screens restricted to the larger cities. But the overall screen count has increased by 30% over the past five years, which have also seen the emergence of a sizeable cine-literate audience, helped by the (for a small market) wide range of choice on the Rialto movie channel. And, whereas arthouse releases were previously restricted to films already acquired for Australia, there is now evidence of distributors taking the risk with NZ-only titles, as happened in 2013 with Arkles Entertainment’s very successful release of WWII drama DIE VERLORENE ZEIT – a title which did not open in any of the other territories in this survey. When it comes to TV, DVD and online viewing of foreign-language films, a recent major report by Screen Australia (Online and On Demand: Trends in Australian Online Video Use) proved somewhat inconclusive. Whereas there was clear evidence that Australian viewers used new technology to time-shift and catch up on missed programmes and Australian films, there seemed little evidence that the increased potential for niche (which would include foreignlanguage) product – something which was one of the key claims of the report – had become a market reality. In the chart below, adapted from the report, 21

clear trends can be observed in the numbers of people who used new technology when it came to local and Hollywood films and programmes; but the responses for ‘indie’ and ‘arthouse’ films basically flatlined a point or two either side of 20%.

There are no such recent reports available for New Zealand, where the most recent survey of the screen industry by Statistics New Zealand dates back to 2008. At that stage, the sector seems robust: the home entertainment business – DVD and BluRay – was estimated to be worth half as much again as the film exhibition business. But it remains Hollywood-dominated. Of the limited number of foreign-language titles available from online sales platform MightyApe (which covers a much wider range of goods than just home entertainment), German films were the fourth largest European selection – after France, the UK and Italy. In other respects, however, the NZ home entertainment market does seem to confirm the Anglophone-audience cliché about ‘foreign language’ equalling ‘French’.

Market Study Australia/New Zealand 2010-2014, June 2015, by Split Screen for German Films

In conclusion, while it is possible to have some idea of what titles are available for VOD and DVD/BluRay in Australia and New Zealand, it is, as everywhere, almost impossible to find any evidence of how many copies of those titles are bought, streamed or downloaded. Thus German filmmakers can take comfort in the fact that many of their films are available to viewers downunder; but they can only guess how many people are actually paying to watch them.

(5) GERMAN FILMS IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND When it comes to the performance of German films between 2010 and 2014, Australia and to a lesser extent New Zealand showed the patterns one would expect of an English-language market, with festival and arthouse films accounting for around a third of releases but (as the charts on the following page show) just 13% of box office. In New Zealand, the basic pattern was the same: films which could ‘pass for’ mainstream dominated the charts. But there were some unexpected results on the Kiwi side of the Tasman: serious drama THE LAST STATION outperformed popcorn fare such as RESIDENT EVIL and THE THREE MUSKETEERS, for instance, while BARBARA sold over 43,000 tickets – more than LOVE, ROSIE or WÜSTENBLUME. Notable disappointments on both markets were animated films DIE BIENE MAJA and TARZAN 3D – especially surprising in the case of the former since the film is a co-production between Germany and Australia and the children’s series on which it is based has aired regularly on Australia’s ABC channel. Also not much helped by a local connection (the director Cate Shortland is Australian) was German-language LORE, about the children of a high-ranking German soldier making their way across Germany in the summer of 1945. One striking success in New Zealand, meanwhile, was another wartime saga, DIE VELORENE ZEIT, about a concentration-camp romance in the same summer: a film unseen outside Germany, with the exception of Japan… and New Zealand, where it sold almost 25,000 tickets, ranking it sixth among all German films and majority co-productions released in the country between 2010 and 2014. In terms of distributors, Madman Entertainment, once the upstart outfit but now almost 20 years old, has been the most consistent acquirer of German films (four films in both territories, a further two in Australia alone) on all platforms. Umbrella Films has also been a regular buyer of German titles (three in the period examined). Another distinctive feature of the Australasian market has been the readiness of branches of the Hollywood majors or their Australian equivalents, Hoyts and Village Roadshow, to handle specialist fare: Paramount released DAS WEISSE BAND and A DANGEROUS METHOD in both territories, with Roadshow and Hoyts also releasing independent English-language films. On the home entertainment front, Madman has built a strong library of European films, but still appears hesitant to release all its theatrical titles on DVD, while Rialto, formerly active only in exhibition, has done much to make New Zealand more cinéphile-friendly over the past decade.
