Click here to access St John’s Parish Newsletleading the Future Leaders program all year and have been doing a great job. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing prep to year four Future Leaders for their wonderful Dear Parents leadership over the past two terms. We congratulate our Year 6 students who were sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit over the weekend at their Confirmation. A special thank Kieran, you to Maree Mark Will and Monsignor Greg Bennet forM. their leaderWell done to: Daniela, Connor, EmmaO’Keefe, O, Daiah,FrEbony, C, Sophie K, Sienna, Luke ship and guidance. It was also great to see so many of our staff there supporting our students and their families. Our students were confident in taking this next step in their faith journey and I thank Rebecca Fry, Tom Jackson, Vicky Pejic and Monica O’Shannassy for their efforts in preparing our student’s over the past few months. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT SURVEYS Annually, Insight SRC and Catholic Education Melbourne (CEM) support schools to conduct their School Improvement Surveys. These surveys aim to identify factors that contribute to the organisational health of our school and provide valuable information about future planning and ongoing improvement. The survey results provide key sign posts that can be used with other school performance data to guide and inform conversations that are essential in reviewing our school and determining the best strategy for bringing about improvement. Feedback from staff, students and parents informs our school strategy for bringing about improvements in the way that we can work together to deliver quality education for our students. Your feedback provides us with data which supports improved decision making at our school.

There are approximately 50 parent surveys that will be distributed to various parents. These will be sent home tonight so please look in your child’s school bag. The surveys can be completed in paper form or online. All responses are confidential. If you receive a survey and prefer not to complete it please return it back to the office and write on the envelope “not completed”. We can then distribute to another family. Next week I will complete the student surveys with our students in years 3- 6. PARISH MISSION Our Parish Mission commenced on Sunday and continues this week. Please take the time to read the attached flier. I encourage you to attend as it is a great opportunity to enrich your faith. FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST We look forward to seeing all our dads, granddads and other special friends at our annual Father’s Day breakfast on Friday. When I was in the Year 1/2 area this morning I saw the student’s completing some special writing about their dads which I know our dads will love. WORKING BEE We have our next working bee on Saturday 10 September from 9-11am. We will be tidying up garden beds, weeding and completing other odd jobs around the school. We wish them every success. Have a great week Jacqui Marshall Principal

ITALIAN NEWS I am pleased to announce that all students have been working enthusiastically in Italian this term. The last three weeks have been spent learning about Olympic sports and saying in Italian what sports we do individually. Years 5 /6 are developing Italian conversations with a partner in Italian as the final task of their learning on Le Olimpiadi 2016. Year 3 /4 have been making beautiful graphs in Italian showing which sports are most popular with the class: il football, il basket, il nuoto, il ciclismo or la ginnastica among many others. Next week they will be challenged to try speaking simple Italian with a partner about the Olympics. Years 1 /2 have enjoyed learning the names of the Olympic sports and saying which ones they like best. Next week they are finishing their work on Italy and its sites via the story of “La Macchinetta Rossa” the little red car who travels around Italy to all the major tourist spots. Year Prep have finished their work on Lo sport and Pinocchio. During their revision of the semester’s language the “Awesome Preps”( I hear they are called), …..remembered 60 words in Italian! Congratulations Prep. Well done! Words that Prep students remembered as a class: In the order in which they were volunteered. It was a busy weekend in the parish with two wonderful Confirmation celebrations and the commencement of the parish mission. The mission will continue this week with two sessions each day, except Wednesday. Pope Francis recently declared September 1 as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, as the Orthodox Church has done since 1989. According to Pope Francis, “The annual World Day of prayer for the Care of Creation offers to individual believers and to the community a precious opportunity to renew our personal participation in this vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvellous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking his help for the protection of creation and his mercy for the sins committed against the world in which we live.”

Students will all praying Pope Francis’ Prayer for the Earth and planting the indigenous plants presented at the last assembly by Michael Sukkar. All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. Amen.

Our gospel challenge this week is to include others in our games. It’s pretty normal to spend that time with friends and people who share your interests. But sometimes friendships can become cliques that exclude or look down on others. Jesus calls us to expand our circle of friends. Why? Because many people need our company. Meals were huge in Jesus’ ministry. He brought outcasts to meals with people of honour. He ate in the homes of people considered sinners. His meals revealed God’s Reign – where everyone has a place around the table. He tells his followers to stop worrying about whether their seat allocation proves they’re honourable. He asks them to welcome outcasts to their meals and into their lives. What does that mean for us? Reach out. Each school has young people that are looking for a friend. Welcome them into your circle of friends. Each town has nursing homes with lonely people. Find yourself another grandpa or grandma. Honour the people others forget, and others will see that Jesus’ ministry continues. Have a great week Monica IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER: Parish Mission week: Sunday 28 August - Friday 2 September SEPTEMBER 9 10 11

District Athletics 2016 A big well done to all our District Athletics representatives who competed on Thursday the 25th of August. The day was a wonderful success for all our participating students. Everyone gave their very best effort on the day and should be congratulated on the fantastic way in which they represented our school. We were very pleased to be able to get through all events even with some rain and HAIL on the day, fortunately no events were cancelled! A special mention to those students that qualified for the next stage of competition; Liam Tully, Patrick Pellegrino, Hamish Gill, Shae Garcia, Josh Jenkins, Luke Marriner and Matthew Chaston. We wish these students all the best for when they compete again in October at the Division Athletics Carnival. St John’s students demonstrated tremendous sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day, displaying a great attitude win or lose. As a school we should all feel very proud of our students. Thank you to those staff, parents and family members who came along on the day to help out and support our students in their events. It is much appreciated and the students loved having so many friends and family there cheering them on. - Tom Jackson
