FOUR STARS. Herzog weaves a fantastical tale” –The Guardian

A must-see for anyone on social networks.” –The Verge

Oscar®-nominated documentarian Werner Herzog chronicles the virtual world from its origins to its outermost reaches, exploring the digital landscape with the same curiosity and imagination he previously trained on earthly destinations as disparate as the Amazon, the Sahara, the South Pole and the Australian outback. Herzog leads viewers on a journey through a series of provocative conversations that reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works—from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships.

Turturro is an exuberant, scenestealing hoot, adding fireworks to the quiet colours of this absorbing, affecting take on the many burdens of being human” –The List

Acclaimed Italian auteur Nanni Moretti finds comedy and pathos in the story of Margherita, a harried film director (Margherita Buy, A FIVE STAR LIFE) trying to juggle the demands of her latest movie and a personal life in crisis. The star of her film, a charming but hammy American actor (John Turturro) imported for the production, initially presents nothing but headaches and her crew is close to mutiny. Away from the shoot, Margherita tries to hold her life together as her beloved mother’s illness progresses, and her teenage daughter grows ever more distant. 4

DIRECTED BY: Andrew Dominik

85 minutes Thursday, September 8 at 9:30pm

The first opportunity anyone will have to hear any of the songs from the new Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album, Skeleton Tree, will be to watch the feature film ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING, directed by Andrew Dominik (THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD). Originally a performance-based concept, the film evolved into something much more significant as Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Filmed in black-and-white and colour, the result is stark, fragile and raw.

Body and Soul

w/Live Score by Renèe Baker’s Chicago Modern Orchestra Project Sunday, September 18 at 12:00pm

The recontextualizing of Oscar Micheaux’s 1925 silent race film BODY AND SOUL has been brilliantly accomplished by a new music score by composer Renèe Baker and her Chicago Modern Orchestra Project. Starring Paul Robeson, singer and political activist in his first movie role, Baker’s score brings to life the societal ills of the time, pushing the envelope forward to the dangers of 2016. Many of the contexts of both ages are remarkably similar in light of racial strife and continued struggle for equality and a level playing field for African Americans in America. Taking the cue from the continuing story being written everyday in our society, Baker and CMOP crafted a score that performs as more than dialogue, more than background—the framework of the movie and its action come to life with the narrative form and marriage with her score. The Love Potion (Le Vin Herbé) A Chicago Opera Theater Production Composed by: Frank Martin Directed by: Andreas Mitisek

Friday, September 30 at 7:30pm Friday, October 7 at 7:30pm Sunday, October 9 at 3:00pm

The epic story of Tristan and Isolde, the fateful lovers who meet by deception, fall in love by magic, and pursue their love in defiance of heavenly and earthly powers, is told through Frank Martin’s mystical and haunting score. THE LOVE POTION (Le Vin Herbé) premiered in 1942 and is based on The Romance of Tristan & Iseult, a retelling of the Tristan legend by historian and medievalist Joseph Bédier (published 1900). Martin uses 12 singers, much in the manner of ancient Greek tragedy. Martin fashioned a work in the greatest possible contrast to Wagner’s work by using older text sources and by creating an intimate chamber work with a medieval feel. One of Merchant Ivory’s undisputed masterpieces, this adaptation of E.M. Forster’s classic 1910 novel is a saga of class relations and changing times in Edwardian England. Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson in an Oscar-winning performance) and her sister Helen (Helena Bonham Carter) become involved with a wealthy, conservative industrialist (Anthony Hopkins) and his wife (Vanessa Redgrave). Their interwoven fates and misfortunes are connected to the ownership of Howards End, a beloved country home. “BRILLIA UNFORGETTNT! ABLE!” –Chicag o Tribun e

October 7, 1957. An old Algerian nationalist, under torture, reveals to Colonel Mathieu the hiding place of the last surviving guerrilla leader, Ali La Pointe. Mathieu’s paratroops surround the house in the Casbah, ready to blow it up unless Ali surrenders. From the pensive faces of the four freedom fighters within, we flash back to November 1, 1954, when a message from the National Liberation Front had launched The Battle of Algiers. A history of the three-year battle ensues, chronicling the escalating terrorism and violence between French military forces and the Algerian guerrilla movement. Based on the book Souvenirs de la Bataille D’Alger by Saadi Yacef. Restored by Cinteca di Bologna and Istituto Luce - Cinecittà at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in collaboration with Surf Film, Casbah Entertainment Inc. and CultFilms.

In exchange for an exclusive, Peter agrees to escort Ellie to her snobbish beau. But a lot can happen on a cross-country bus trip!

Oscar-Winning Comedies

Woody Allen is in prime form as the neurotic, highly insecure and indecisive New Yorker Alvy Singer, who falls head over heels for a naive smalltown “girl” Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). Allen’s comic blend of reality and fantasy, paired with Keaton’s iconic performance, makes it easy to see why we “need the eggs.”

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL

SANTA SANGRE (Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1989, 123mins)

In the 1970s, his legendary films EL TOPO and THE HOLY MOUNTAIN redefined movies as both art and entertainment while changing the face of cinema forever. And in 1989, visionary writer/director Alejandro Jodorowsky returned with his modern masterpiece: the story of a young circus performer, the crime of passion that shatters his soul, and the macabre journey back to his armless mother, deaf-mute lover, and murder. It is an odyssey of ecstasy and anguish, belief and blasphemy, beauty and madness.

BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE (Sam Liu, 2016, 76mins, DCP)

**Featuring a pre-show of rare clips, interviews and short films, curated by musician & Music Box projectionist Daniel Knox** Batman (Kevin Conroy) must save Commissioner Gordon (Ray Wise) from the Joker’s (Mark Hamill) twisted quest to drive him insane, in the animated adaptation of one of The Dark Knight’s most famous graphic novels.

POSSESSION (Andrzej Zulawski, 1981, 124mins, 35mm)

Capturing the energy generated when two people whose lives are so intensely fused are forcibly split, POSSESSION is an emotional nuclear explosion. If all we were given were its operatic performances by leads Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill, its impossible-to-describe music by Andrzej Korzynski, and its hyper-kinetical ballet of camera choreography—all delivered with the force of a long-suppressed traumatic memory— then POSSESSION would already be the best film about divorce ever made. 24 Music Box Theatre August-October 2016

(Terry Jones & Terry Gilliam, 91mins, 1975, 35mm) Wednesday, October 19 at 7:30pm An absurdist take on the legend of King Arthur that for many people is the comedy holy grail. Is it still funny if you’ve never seen it before? Is it still funny if you’ve seen it 23 times and have memorized every line? What if you’re somewhere in between?
