Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ljubljana with the tenor José Cura (Argentina): Othello 6 Jul, 20:00, Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre

This production of Verdi’s opera Othello is directed by Manfred Schweigkofler, who staged a hit production of The Nymphs of the Rhine at Ljubljana’s Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre a few years ago. Othello’s literary source, Shakespeare’s play Othello, was a good point of departure for the tragic whirlwind of events in Verdi’s opera about the devoted yet fragile love between a heroic Moorish general and the daughter of a Venetian senator, which is tragically destroyed by parvenuism, grudge, envy, and intrigue. The music and dance production Sissi, which tells the story of the famous Austrian empress Sissi and evokes the forgotten world of the 19th century, was created by a renowned Hungarian dance company in collaboration with a renowned Hungarian symphony orchestra, both considered to be ambassadors of Hungarian culture to the world. ExperiDance, a dance company led by the acclaimed choreographer Sándor Román, has an original way of showing respect for tradition while at the same time challenging conventions. The Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra is one of the most unusual world-class symphony orchestras. Apart from works by classical composers such as Johannes Brahms, Frantz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Georges Bizet, and the Strauss family, its repertoire also includes chardashes and folk music arrangements. Save the Bees - exhibition 21 May - 25 Sep Ljubljana Castle, Casemate The Save the Bees exhibition explores the rich tradition of beekeeping in Slovenian-inhabited lands and examines the importance of bees for ensuring the Earth’s biodiversity. Held during Ljubljana’s year as the European Green Capital, the exhibition presents beekeeping as a traditional activity related in many ways to the Slovenian way of life. Slovenian beekeepers are credited with domesticating the indigenous Carniolan honey bee, which is now the second most widespread bee subspecies in the world. Bee products such as honey, beeswax, royal jelly, bee pollen, propolis, and bee venom play an important role in traditional Slovenian cuisine and handicrafts, but they are also used in modern medicine. In the process of conserving bees, Slovenia, due to its biodiversity and high level of public

awareness of the issue, continues to be a ‘green oasis’ for bees and is internationally renowned as a country of excellent beekeepers. The exhibition also presents Slovenia’s rich cultural and artistic heritage related to beekeeping. Open: 9:00 - 21:00 InterLACEd 21 Jun – Dec Slovene Ethnographic Museum Temporary exhibition by SEM The exhibition presents a great variety of museum laces and others by which the basic typology of ornamental techniques, traditional and other contemporary applications and multiple dimensions of their use is shown. Zoran Mušič, the best known 20th century Slovenian-born painter and a man with more than one homeland, spent most of his life between Venice and Paris. He mostly painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, Dalmatian donkeys and horses, trees, views of Venice, double portraits with his wife Ida, and poignant self-portraits depicting him as an old man. His visual motifs were always related to the Slovenian region of Kras and its typical scenes. He became world famous with his series of paintings We Are Not the Last, in which he relived the scenes he experienced in the Dachau concentration camp. Ljubljana’s National Gallery displays the world’s only permanent survey exhibition of Mušič’s work. The majority of exhibited works come from the Ljuban, Milada and Vanda Mušič Collection, owned by the family of the artist’s brother. Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:0020:00. Closed: Mondays

Slovenian territory, lying at the junction of natural routes between the Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian Plain, has been the point of convergence of different peoples and cultures since prehistory. Whitesnake, one of the most successful ‘80s hard rock bands, was founded in 1977 by the singer David Coverdale, formerly a member of Deep Purple. Whitesnake rose to worldwide fame after the release of their most successful albums, Whitesnake (1987) and Slip of the Tongue (1989), which feature a mixture of hard rock and pop reminiscent of the music played by the likes of Bon Jovi, Poison, and Def Leppard at the time. In 1990 the band dissolved, but they reunited in 2003.

Back in the 1990s, the American band Mudhoney were among the most important exponents of grunge sound, next to Nirvana and Soundgarden, but despite their musical influence they never became rock stars of the highest order. The band was founded by Mark Arm and Steve Turner, who were also the founders of the cult 1980s band Green River, whose members later formed the bands Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam. Unlike many other grunge bands, Mudhoney still enjoy an uninterrupted and relatively successful career today.

The Ljubljana concert by the popular American indie rock band Local Natives will take place immediately after the band’s performance at the prestigious Lollapalooza music festival. Local Natives made a name for themselves with their debut album Gorilla Manor, which was released in 2009 to critical acclaim and rode high in music charts thanks to the band’s trademark sound reflecting influences from Afro pop and folk music. Local Natives have provided support to the famous Arcade Fire and The National. In 2013, they released their second album, Hummingbird, and repeated the success of their debut. Their third album, Sunlit Youth, is due for release later this year.
