Spotlighting The International President One of the special h ig h lig h ts of the m eeting in Hawaii fo r me was the rare o p p o rtu n ity to see so m any of our mem bers from A ustra lia ! Thanks to Pat Kelley Shearer, International M em bership Chairm an and ou r gracious hostess, a luncheon was held fo r all those atten din g from cou ntrie s oth er than the United States. Edith Denny, our g lo b e -tro ttin g Intern ation al C oor din a to r from Canada, was there renew ing acquaintances and helping to spark the exchange of in fo rm a tio n and ideas. C on versation was easy and C h ristin e W ills , G overnor, A ustralian S ection, to ld of plans to hold an air event in A ustra lia s im ila r to the Powder P uff Derby. C ontestants w ill be invited from all over the w orld and from th is discu ssio n an e xcitin g new task is underway -- the challenge o f creating an Intern ation al P ilo t’s License! A ltho ug h it may be a tough one fo r ICAO, we believe it can be done. Arrival in Hawaii was all we had expected w ith be au tifu l leis and pretty Hawaiian g irls to greet us. The 4 9 '/2 S enjoyed this, too. Each day saw us lo okin g more Hawaiian in dress and a t titud e, laughing w ith the sin g in g bus drivers, parting w ith our money, enjoying new food adventures — the Luau at the K elle y’s was fabulous, an occasion unparalleled. I enjoyed the fly in g to u r of the islands w ith the HATS (Hawaiian A ir T our Service) crew of the Herron te llin g us so m uch about w hat we were seeing on the 850-m ile, one-day journey. My pictures o f the active volcanoes are treasures as are the keychain, pin and be au tifu l book presented to me by the A ustra lia n m em bers. I appreciated the ir effo rts to bring tw o E ucalyptus seedlings fo r the 99s F orest o f Friendship. But puzzled U.S. G overnm ent o ffic ia ls kept little trees in th e ir "care” (under quarantine) at the a irpo rt in H o no lulu. We are trying to obtain a pe rm it fo r fu tu re im p o rts of th is type. Thanks to the w onderful A lo ha Chapter 99s, I brought hom e a real M uum uu to wear. Thank you, on behalf of all 99s, Florence Beamon, T rippi Penland, B etty Skold, Pat Coates, Dee V ick, Dot Read, Pat and Jim Shearer and the Kelleys, along w ith all the others who helped make the firs t o ffic ia l v is it by a 99 group to Hawaii a great success. A fte r three days o f w ork I was o ff again, to attend the NIFA (N ational Intercollegiate F lyin g A ssociatio n) Tournam ent of Cham pions at St. C loud, M inn. It rained before I arrived, con tin u o u sly w hile I was there and after I departed. College teams were unable to com pete in fly in g co m p e titio n the firs t three days

GREETINGS — to Reporters. You have been drafted by your Chapter to report interesting and im p ortan t news to Ye Editor fo r the 99 NEWS Magazine. A greater num ber of fem ale p ilo ts were mem bers of the team s th is year and they were pre tty, in te llig e n t and con fid e n t co n te sta n ts. The 99s NIFA Award com m ittee, headed by Ruby St. Onge, interviewed many of them during consideration o f the a p p lica n ts fo r the 99 Achievem ent Award. A luncheon was given in th e ir ho no r and we invited them to jo in N inety-N ines soon. Look fo r them in you r area! A fte r an enjoyable IFR flig h t in an Aztec back to St. Paul, I headed fo r Kansas C ity to attend the North Central Section m eeting. F o llo w in g the business m eeting was a lively “ rap se ssio n ” fo r the purpose o f answ ering qu estio ns on the headquarters b u ild in g project. The members appreciated the o p p o rtu n ity to learn more about the de tails and expressed con fide nce in the d e cisio n s made by th e ir elected Board. Lois F eigenbaum , International Treasurer, and I were q u ite pleased to spend tim e w ith m em bers from th is section in a relaxed at m osphere to d iscu ss on a one-to-one basis. Chapter Personalities PENELOPE A M ABILE, B a llo o n ist Penny A m a b ile ’s business card says “ aviatrix, b a llo o n ist, barnstorm er, ad ven turer.” In the tw en ty years since college she has worked her way in to the w o rld ’s newest (and oldest) aerial sport. Penelope her parents named her, bought her d o llie s, dressed her in velvet and lace, and brought her up to be a lady. She majored in p h ilo so p h y at W ellesley, studied Plato and Descartes, not Jules Verne - the eig h ty days man - or Langeweische. An o ffe r she clippe d from Life magazine back in the m id-60’s started the w hole th in g . “ Bring th is coupon and $5 to any Cessna dealer fo r your firs t lesson . .. ” , it said. She d id . And it was love at firs t flig h t. Six m onths later she had her private license. Soon she had her com m ercial ticke t, and on to her basic, advanced, and in stru m en t ground in s tru c to r ratings. By th is tim e she was ripe fo r another ad, torn from an old fly in g magazine. (“ I’m an inveterate ad and coupon c lip p e r", she e x p la in s , “ s o a p -p o w d e r-7 c e n ts o ff coupons fa ll out of all my po ckets".) ... “ You’ve tried the rest, now try the b e st," it inveigled. Last June, guests at a local h isto rica l society ball were astonished to see a m odern day Mary P oppins descending upon the H ilto n Hotel via balloon. NEWS BRIEFS A LETTER TO 99 PRESIDENT SUSIE From Denise Morchand, N a irob i, Kenya, East Africa June 27, 1974 Dear Susie: Thank you very m uch for your w onderful encouraging letter! We had another m eeting today and th in g s are beginning to move, such as plans fo r a m in iatu re Powder Puff rally, but not u n til our glam o ro us charter p ilo t, Heather Stewart, has had her baby and is back in the air. Some statio nery and C hristm as cards are also being organized. As soon as I received your le tte r I contacted Anne Spoerry fo r an interview for “ 99 NEW S” , but she c o u ld n 't see me till Tuesday of th is week, and flyin g d o cto r ph otos are being readied fo r the weekend, so you see, no thin g happens very q u ickly in East A frica. Anne had 2 m eetings w h ile I in te rv ie w e d h e r (w e ta lk e d b e tw e e n m eetings). She to ld me about the F lying Nuns up North and also about w it ch d o cto rs and a Devil’s c u lt — all w ill be in the a rticle. A lso, she m entioned a lady p ilo t w ho flew across the A tla n tic years ago (east to west) and today I learned of a second A tla n tic Flyer. Both now breed horses. I w ill try to locate them fo r in terview s. A lso , I managed a brief w rite-up on Heather Stewart. June Sutherland d id n 't attend today — I w ant to get de tails on how she won her medal (Queen's C om m endation fo r Service in the Air). I have decided to w rite firs t to Mardo Crane to te ll her w h at's com ing and to aim for Septem ber 1st deadline O ctober issue of “ 99 NEW S” ) and see if she is interested. I feel te rib ly frustrated about m issing the July firs t deadline, but co m m u n ica tio n is d iffic u lt here, and these ladies fly a great deal and are d iffic u lt to pin down. Thank you again fo r sending all those m em bership form s. I discovered five more wom en p ilo ts when I flew last week to Nakuru and we w ill soon have a brand new private p ilo t, young and very attractive, w ho w orks at a dectective agency (a fly in g detective). A lso som e of us may be going up in a ba llo on s h o rtly !! I’ m very sorry to d isa p p o in t you w ith the lateness of the Anne Spoerry story, but it w ill be w orth w a itin g fo r as she is a very in te restin g wom an. She has had spears throw n at her airplane. More later — I w ill send you copies of the stories I send Mardo Crane, ju s t in case the ones I send her get lo st in the m ail. And I’ ll try to get lo ts of photos. Very warm and sincere regards to you, and many thanks.

501(c)3 By Hazel H. Jones At convention last year the N inety Nines voted to attem p t to ob tain tax exem ption under 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Since the Internal Revenue is noted for Keeping everyone confused and m ost of us try not to th in k of them except in A p ril, th is vote, for the m ost part, was taken w ith a "H o H um " a ttitu d e . I do ub t that many really realized what it was all about. It necessitated our changing our purpose and th is was done. We came home from convention concerned about other th in g s and really not too interested in these numbers and what they a ctu a lly meant or stood for. Just another bunch of gobblede-gook that IRS th o u g h t up to cause us trouble. NOT SOM! The IRS advised the N inety Nines on May 1971 that the N inety N ines Inc. on a National level, previously had exem ption under 501 (c) 7 of the 1954 Internal Revenue Code as a “ Social C lu b ", w hich does nothing fo r our “ cha ritab le d e d u c tib ility ” . This letter also advised that the ruling was applicable to the International level and did not include any of the sub un its or chapters. This also meant that any chapter which received m onies, w ith o u t having an exem pt status, and did not file an incom e tax return was operating in vio latio n of the law. Possible civil penalties can arise for failure to do so. (C rim inal penalties w ould not apply since there w ould be no w illfu ln e s s involved). The Executive Board charged VicePresident Pat McEwen w ith the respon

What Is It and Who Needs It s ib ility o f p u ttin g the wheels in to m otio n to get the exem pt sta tu s fo r the N inety Nines on a N ational level. Pat en liste d the help o f M arilyn Copeland and hired Perry W esbrooks, 49'/2 of S hirley W esbrooks, W ic h ita Falls chapter, to be the attorney of record. Perry is a graduate of the U n iversity of Texas Law School and holds a D octor of Jurisprudence and B achelor of Law degree. He also has a BBA from the U n iversity of Texas. He is a m em ber of the Law ye r-P ilo ts Bar A sso cia tio n , ho ld s a private p ilo t license, loves the N inety N ines and likes to get "w eathered in ". He proceeded to gather in fo rm a tio n , cut throu gh all the red tape, and am assed tw o books fu ll of data ju s tify in g the N inety Nines as being e lig ib le . As a resu lt of hard w ork by Pat, M arilyn, Perry, et al, the N inety N ines on a N ational level received word of th e ir tax exem pt status on June 14. This means than any funds c o n trib u te d to the N ational organization w o uld have “ cha ritab le d e d u c tib ility ” features. It also m eans, am ong other th in g s , that any m em ber atten din g an Intern ation al C onvention as a delegate, can deduct th e ir tra n sp o rta tio n and lo d g in g expenses. Back to the title of th is a rticle . . .501 (c) 3 W hat Is It And W ho Needs It. You now know w hat it is. As far as who needs it, we all need it. The S outh Central S ection has already retained Mr. W esbrooks to obtain exem pt status fo r the S ection and its sub u n its and so the business of gathering

data begins again. I know of no other sin g le item that w ill assist the Ninety Nines as much as th is exem pt status. If it does no thin g else it w ill put the Ninety Nines on a b u sin ess-like basis and put th e ir op era tions on a lawful basis instead of operating qu estio na bly in th is regard. I th in k a great deal of credit and gra titu de is due Pat M cEwen, M arilyn Copeland, and Perry W esbrooks for the work they did in o b ta in in g t h is fo r th e In te rn a tio n a l O rganization. For all of you who feel as we did in the South Central section that it is tim e to get our “ ducks in a row ", Mr. W esbrooks w ill be atten din g the convention in Puerto Rico and w ill address the delegates at that tim e. Get you r qu e stio n s ready and also start th in k in g of ways your chapter and section w ill be be tte r o ff fo r having a “ tax exem pt" status.

“ Aren’t you afraid it w ill fa ll? ” “ How does the plane fly ? ” "W hat makes it go one way or another, and d o n ’t you have to be an engineer or som ething to be able to fly a plane?” These were some of the qu estio ns asked by wom en o f my church C ircle when they discovered I was a p ilo t. F lying is an im p ortan t part of the econom y of any c o m m u n ity, but C om m ercial A via tion , as represented by the A irlin e s, is the only contact m ost people have w ith it. The m em bers of the F irst Congregational Church of San Jose were no exception. The W om en’s F e llow sh ip of the church is made up of three or fou r groups of 30 to 40 women each, who meet one m orning a m onth in the home of one of th e ir m embers. The program s are varied and challe ng in g, ranging from W om en’s Lib and Ecology d iscu ssio n s to a review of “ Jesus C h rist, S up erstar." It was during a d iscussio n of po ssib le fu tu re program s that these questions arose. My fe llo w C ircle m em bers knew I was involved in many flyin g a ctivitie s, and being an alert active group, wanted to know the sp e cifics of fly in g . It seemed a good tim e and place to introduce a fly in g lesson! Each lady was asked to bring a yard stick to the next m eeting, which became the con tro l colum n in the plane she flew . I used a battery-propelled model o f a Cessna 150 and colored ph otos o f a Skylane to explain c o n tro l surfaces and a ttitu d e s of a plane in flig h t. Each lady flew her own plane, fo llo w in g my exam ple, and observing the p o sitio n of our model as we moved the co n tro ls. We progressed from stra ig h t and level flig h t to turns and clim b in g or g lid in g turns. As qu estio ns came up, they were answered w ith d e m on stra tion s by all “ p ilo ts ” . We cleared up many false ideas about fly in g — esp ecially the one about it being necessary to have more than one engine in order to make a safe flig h t! "I w ould never go in those little planes w ith on ly one e n g in e !" is a fa m ilia r statem ent. Interest generated was so great, the organization o f luncheon flig h ts around the area was inevitable. The Nut Tree was our firs t de stina tion . It is a fa m ilia r stop and w ell known to m ost C alifornians travelling by car. However, none of these p a rticular C alifornians had ever been there by air! Our firs t three pioneers in th is new approach of th e ir favorite restaurant received in s tru c tio n in p re -flig h tin g an airplane as

A ltho ug h the v is ib ility was o n ly 3 m iles on the trip to the Nut Tree, they were d e lig hted w ith all they could see stra ig h t down — and did enjoy the ten to fifte e n m iles v is ib ility on the return flig h t! They were able to move the c o n tro ls of a real airplane (instead of a yard stick) and see and feel its e ffe ct on the plane! The co m m u n ica tio n s aspect fascinated them , and the ir ears qu ickly adjusted to the som etim es d iffic u lt radio transm ission s. They were eager tra ffic w atchers — as w ell as amazed sw im m ing -po ol cou nters, and tra ffic-ja m observers. We could see some of the m ost varied ground patterns, since our flig h t from San Jose M un icip al A irp o rt to the Nut Tree took us over the bay waters w ith th e ir salt evaporating pools, freeways, congested c ity areas, m ou ntains, rivers, sm all tow n s, and a flo tilla of m othball ships in the Sacram ento River. We even skirted Travis AFB, scene of the recent POW returnees’ welcom es. To be able to co m fo rta b ly avoid all that co n fu sio n on the ground and arrive q u ickly at ou r d e stin a tio n w ith tim e to spare to en jo y it, fascinated and delig hted these people. In short, the ease w ith w h ich one cou ld cover distances at w ill was im pressive not on ly from a pleasure but also a business stand p o in t. We who fly a great deal, forge t that the un in itia te d are not aware o f the po tentia l o f one sm all aircraft in tod ay’s m obile society. A ll w ill not w ant to learn to fly , but all are now interested in becom ing know ledgeable about lig h t aircraft and general aviation. We hope they w ill have an understanding, effective and p o sitive influe nce on a irpo rt gro w th in the com m u nity.

Eager members o f the F irst C ongregational Church o f San Jose, Ca., take the ir firs t orie n ta tio n flig h t w ith 99 M ayetta Behringer (I) as p ilo t-g u id e . Shown L to R are Mrs. J. Gerald Toole, Mrs. Clayton Haven, and Mrs. W m . Day.

O ur flig h ts con tinu e, not o n ly to the Nut Tree, but also other lo ca tio n s that have notable restaurants. And of course, the only way to go fo r the women of the F irst C ongregational Church of San Jose is by air!

INTERNATIONAL FLYING ACTIVITIES

We hear about the beautiful “ Dumb B lo nd es". Mary Stroh and Norma Frier of the Chicago Area Chapter are tw o beautiful "S m art B lo nd es". They have entered five races tog ether and won 1 st place in three. They are pictures receiving th e ir trophies at the 1st annual W is-Sky run sponsored by the W isco n sin Chapter. The girls managed th is by staying pro ficie n t! As I am also an FAA A ccident Prevention C ounselor I want to add a word about safety th is m onth. A nytim e you are p a rticip a tin g in an event d o n 't forget to “ swivel you r head". W atch ou tside con sta n tly fo r oth er aircraft. If the event is a spot landing - especially upon arrival - be pa rticu la rly cau tiou s. I w ould strongly recom m end a safety person in the aircraft. Yesterday I w itnessed the c o llis io n of tw o aircraft pa rticip a tin g in a spot landing con test. Both p ilo ts were so lo and fo r tu n a te ly b o th s u rv iv e d , but are ho spita lize d. One aircraft was totaled and po ssib ly the second also. This brought hom e again the fact that the m a jo rity of accide nts happen in the tra ffic pattern. Please— keep your eyes m oving at all tim es and never concentrate on the inside of the plane to o long when in a tra ffic pattern.

The Suncoast Chapter w ould like very much to have Cathy (Mrs. Keith O. M a lk e m e s ) w h o s e a d d re s s has ju s t become A d m ira lty House, A pt. A le tte r from M argaret Kentley in A ustralia where I w ill be seeing her and Ann Carter when we are there during the m onth of June. We also plan to see the Hawaii N inety-N ine s on our return trip . The Suncoast Chapter is saddened by the loss of fo u r sis te r p ilo ts . O ur sym pathy goes out to th e ir fa m ilie s.

KITTY HAWK CHAPTER ‘N ita M elvin, Reporter The 1974 Southeast Spring Sectional at K itty Hawk, North Carolina started o ff w ith a literal bang on Friday, A pril 5 as June Rodd and Page S ham burger were tying down th e ir birds and a loud crack of thunder greeted th e ir arrival. June got tho ro u g h ly drenched in the ensuing do w n pou r but d id n ’t let th is dampen her sp irits. In sp ite of lack of cooperation by the elem ents, qu ite a few 99s came to our Friday evening co ckta il party. Bouquets of roses to Kay G uice and V ernita George, North G eorgia Chapter, w ho drove fo r 13 hours in order to make th is sectional m eeting! Early the next m orning we attended the business m eeting presided over by our able governor, Bee Reid. During the Saturday afternoon free tim e, 99s toured the nearby W righ t B rothers M emorial (where it all began, remember?) and the museum , am ong other tours. On Saturday evening the banquet was presided over by our chapter president, Annette Rogers. Jean W arlick and her com m ittee created sm all airplanes of plastic easter eggs and fab ric, and a replica of the W rig h t Brothers M em orial fo r clever table decorations. Banquet speakers were Mr. Andy Abernathy, FAA GADO Safety S pecialist from Raleigh, and Mr. Bob Farrington, free-lance news jo u rn a lis t and fe llo w p ilo t. Bob kept us all laughing durin g the entire length of his speech w ith his hilariou s anecdotes of his fly in g career. In c id e n ta lly, Bob received his bienniel flig h t check from Andy on the flig h t to K itty Hawk from Raleigh. Bob is s e ttin g a good exam ple fo r us (or is he fo llo w in g ours?). The evening was brought to a perfect close by the band w h ich played fo r our liste nin g and dancing pleasure. This was K itty Hawk C hapter’s firs t sectional to organize and, fo r many of our members, to attend. We all fe lt we enjoyed the m eeting tho ro ug hly and hope 99s from our neighboring chapters d id , too. May was not a good fly in g m onth so only those close enough to drive made it to hear a fe llo w p ilo t, M olly B urnheim , au thor of “ A Sky of My O w n” speak. Mrs. Bur nheim , in stru m en t in s tru c to r rated, started fly in g a fter fo rty years of age and is s till active today in her seventies. June was APT m onth fo r those who had

not had th e ir checkride. We packed a p icn ic lunch, flew in to G oldsboro w ith our ow n FAA (F rien dly Andy A bernathy!) safety s p e cia list and got APT. A nnette Rogers, w ho already was APT, fle w Andy in. O thers g e ttin g th e ir rides were Esther Fordham , M ontez Cox and 491/ 2er Bobby, Katharine W eber and 491/ 2er C ol. Fred, new m em ber Jan Clem en and th is reporter, who had the ho no r of fly in g Andy home. Jean W arlick had to w ork but had m in i planes w ith “ APT 1974" on them fo r all of us. A v is ito r from the South Central A frica S e c tio n , H e le n e R o b e rts o n , is now m eeting w ith us but w ill retain her m em bership in South A frica, where she worked w ith the Peace Corps fo r four years. 21. F ellow 99 Mary Lou W rig h t and husband H a ro ld B a rb e r w e re her passengers. Says P h yllis, “ There is the advice you can pass on “ ju s t because the book says the gear can be operated m anually when the electric system fa ils to operate it a in ’t necessarily s o !!! The same old qu estio n from everyone-yes, we can read and fo llo w in s tru c tio n s and follow e d them to a “ T " but when one gear is stuck up you can’t u n -s tic k it from in side the co ckp it. No, I d id n ’t use the grass. I requested advice after I cou ld te ll that those on the ground did not agree w ith my de cisio n to use the grass. The lo g ic was that w ith th in g s hanging dow n the tendancy to cart wheel w o uld be greater in the s o ft grass and one w o uld slide on the hard s u r fa c e w e ll I had lo ts of tim e to th in k th is one over and decided th a t as I had never done it before I w o uld take others advice! Flaps-had them on and decided to let them up as we had everything dead and were go in g slo w , slo w , s lo w — saw no reason to scratch them . P rop -th ou gh t it w o uld stop w in d m illin g at the ap pro xim ate tou chdo w n tim e but the th in g ju s t seemed to keep tw irlin g . Rather than loose my angle of attack and esta blished slow speed decided to ju s t let it go as engine was dead. Bent both ends but no crank shaft damage. I stayed up to burn o ff gas. The “ big boys te ll m e" that danger was as great from fum es as from liq u id , however I’m glad I bu rnt it o ff as we were much lighte r and that m ust have helped too. We had everything w o rkin g fo r us but the gear! The weather was good, w ind had gone down to about 12 K and on ly about 10 degrees o ff runway, co m m u n ica tio n s good, lo ts of th o u g h tfu l and h e lp fu l people about. There was no reason to make a mess of it. I have lo ts of respect fo r the fibe rglass on the ADF antenna. As the gear came up when the w e igh t of the plane touched it the plane ju s t slid along on the ADF antenna. It gave a little scratching noise, then the scratching got a b it louder, we stopped rig h t on center line and the le ft side came around a little . It was the heaviest as there was s till 1/2 hr fuel in it as w ell as m yself and passenger on that side. We managed to remove tw o radio an tenna, scratch the belly a little and bend the ends on the prop but I d o n 't recom mend landing th is w ay— if you have a ch o ic e .”

SANTA CLARA VALLEY CHAPTER B etty H icks, Reporter " I ’ll teach you how to escape death. ...th e re is a raven in the eastern sea called Yitai (“ d u ll-h e a d ” ). This dull-head cannot fly very high and seems very s tu p id . It hops on ly a short distance and nestles clo se w ith others of its kind. In going forw ard, it dare not lead, and in going back, it dare not lag behind. At the tim e of feeding it takes w hat is le ft over by the o th er birds. Therefore, the ranks of this bird are never depleted and nobody can do them any harm. “ A tree w ith a stra ig h t trunk is the firs t to be chopped dow n. A w ell w ith sweet water is the firs t to be drawn d ry .” — Taikung Jen, in a conversation w ith C o n fu ciu s, from “ Fate Is the H u n te r,” by Ernest K. Gann. M em orial services fo r Carolyn Boogaert P h illip s were held at Stone Church of San Jose, on a gray-veiled Sunday, the 16th of June, 1974. It had been ten days before that the h a stily-teleph on ed news had stunned Santa Clara Valley Chapter N inety-N ines. C arolyn and B ill P h illip s ’ Bonanza, its Vta il wrenched from the fuselage by violence in de scriba ble because few of us have experienced its parallel, had crashed near H o p kin sville , Kentucky. The in itia l, s u c c in c t, and g ro s s ly u n d e rs ta te d probable cause was that the accident was w eather-related. There were no survivors. B ill P h illip s ’ 18-year-old daughter Bonita was a passenger. It is d iffic u lt to visualize, as we s it in the Santa Clara Valley th is F ather’s Day of 1974 and look out to where a placid layer of stone-hued stratus shrouds M t. H am ilton, the m alevolent anger w hich churns in the viscera of a G od-begotten Frankenstein know n as a cum u lo nim b us. W hen what had been ecstacy fo r flig h t is transfo rm e d, in what m ust have been terror-cram m ed m om ents of cognizance that w hat had been beloved had become a sna rlin g betrayer, the tragedy cuts in to all of us w ith a dual-edged scalpel. O bitu arie s are best w ritten by som eone w ho knew the departed in tim a te ly — or knew them not at all.
