Robert Altmann: Cuban Contemporary Art Part II It’s impossible to talk about Cuban culture without referring to Robert Altmann. His collection of 1960s Cuban Art reflects his tremendous intellectual affinity with multicultural diversity, his understanding of an unparallelled artistic reality, and his vision of a future where the only evidence of freedom would be art and creativity. He became the friend and collector of the leading artists of what was a Golden Age for Cuban (and world) art: Wifredo Lam, Amélia Peláez, Samuel Feijóo, Antonia Eiriz, Joaquín Ferrer, Guido Llinás, Gina Pellón, Loló Soldevilla, Cundo Bermúdez and many others.

Amelia Pelaez (1897-1968) Still Life with Fruit (1941) oil on canvas 109.3 x 86.3cm signed & dated bottom right sold for €230,000

Bruno Gambone: Pop Ceramics (1969-79) Bruno Gambone is an outstanding figure in the history of contemporary ceramics. His work derives from his experience as a painter and sculptor. The pieces chosen for this sale, with their Pop Art colours, reveal a calibrated sense of proportion that pushes minimalist aesthetics to the limit. ‘The love which I think I have always had, and still have, for seeking out the right materials – i.e. the raw materials needed for ceramics – lies in finding the best types of clay and glaze.’

Italian Lamps (1950-80) Technological and aesthetic innovation, allied to a string of cutting-edge Design producers, made Italy the country for avant-garde lighting in the aftermath of World War II. Leading names included Stilnovo, Arteluce, Arredoluce and Azucena, not forgetting the mythical Fontana Arte, known around the world since the end of the 19th century. These firms employed such exceptional designers as Gino Sarfatti, Pietro Chiesa, Angelo Lelli and Achile Castiglioni – the veritable father-figures of Italian lighting. This sale features an original overview of post-war Italian production, covering the whole spectrum of aesthetics, materials and function (chandeliers, floor-lamps, walllights, table-lamps etc.). .
