Auction 67

1 December 2012

Please send your bids to our auction secretary Peter McGowan, Nethergreen House, 9 The Green, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire NG11 6DY or by email to [email protected] to reach him by 28 November 2012 at the latest. Ensure you include current address and contact details. If you are bidding by email, please make sure you have received his acknowledgement of receipt. Successful bidders from overseas will be asked to pay for their lots before despatch. If two bids of the same amount are received for a lot, then the bid received first will take precedence, so early bidding is desirable. All lots now carry reserves, either at a default value of 75% of the estimate or at an undisclosed figure set by the seller. No bid will be accepted below the reserve. Take into account that some of our estimated prices appear rather too modest, and may be well overbid. References to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography are shown as ‘ODNB’.

RESULTS OF AUCTION 66

held on 6 October 2012

Two very fine German ex-libris of the Electoral Library of Bavaria (Munich) dating from 1623 and 1746 sold at £110 and £100. Schache’s large pictorial for Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring of St George killing a dragon fetched £60. The classic large early armorial for Paul Jodrell of Duffield made £56, while Simon Gribelin’s anon Jacobean for Robartes reached a rather high £50. A determined bidder saw off all opposition when paying £40 for Neville Coghill’s pictorial by EH New. Batches of plates went well, as did Gill’s exlibris for the Royal Institute of British Architects. Helard’s royal Viscount Lascelles plate was inexpensive at £35. A spirited contest for an anon Jacobean of Nicolson ended at £30, the same price being realised by an armorial for Sir Oswald Mosley (the father). Of the 170 lots, 67 (ie 40%) sold for £10 or less, and at the low end there were some lots which were unduly cheap. Perhaps all participants already have Stephen Gooden’s pictorial for Samuel Courtauld, for which only £12 was paid (low estimate £28), and the 1699 early armorial of Francis Fulford struggled to £10 (£15 estimate). Two Mark Severin lots went for £10 each. As usual, the best bargains seemed to be won by the eleven people in the room, who also had the benefit, prior to the auction, of a further chance to arrive early and look through the many remaining Dorling Collection. Two of the five unsold lots found a buyer after the auction.
