Western Australian Schools’ Jazz Festival 2016 Sunday, 7 August 2016 Venue: John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School

Attention: Jazz Ensemble Director Thank you for your application to this year’s festival. How is this year’s festival different? This year the WA Schools Jazz Festival will host the Essentially Ellington Competition and teachers conference in conjunction with Jazz at the Lincoln Centre. This year the first Essentially Ellington Down Under Regional Festival will be held on 7th and 8th August 2016 at John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School. For more information, visit www.sim.iinet.net.au Band directors and students are encouraged to listen to other schools’ bands and catch up with colleagues during the event. To facilitate this, bands will be grouped in sessions of approximately one hour in length. Bands will enter each session together and listen each other perform. It will be important that band changeovers are managed quickly and efficiently, particularly as students playing later in the session may need to re-tune before performing. Bands should be ready and tuned in holding rooms 10 minutes before their session time, awaiting collection by a marshal. Please be aware of the needs of other ensembles that may be using your holding room, both before and after your performance. The following equipment will be on stage at the festival: • Drum sets are 4-piece (bass drum, snare drum, two tom toms plus ride, crash & hi hat cymbals). • Auxiliary percussion: Congas; timbale with cowbell; vibraphone • Keyboards: grand piano & electronic keyboard • Amplifiers: bass amp; guitar amp and full PA support for each band • Music stands Drummers must provide their own sticks or mallets and may provide their own cymbals if they wish. Guitarists and bass guitarists must provide their own leads. Other equipment must be self-provided. The stage will be preset to a standard jazz orchestra setting. Please do not exceed the performance times that you indicated on the application form, as most ensembles have only 15 minutes on stage including change-over time. Ensembles that exceed performance times, causing sessions to run late, will be ineligible to receive any ensemble or individual performers’ awards. Awards will be presented in the Auditorium at the conclusion of the final sessions. Each band will be presented with a certificate of participation. Additionally, outstanding bands, sections and individual performers will be presented with vouchers donated by the Sound Centre and Yamaha, or workshops and educational opportunities provided by the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra. For individual performers to be eligible for awards you must email, fax or post a copy of the 2 included forms, “Ensemble Details” and “Setup Plot”. The forms must be received by 4.00pm on Friday, 29 July. Entry fees must also be paid before the start of the Festival for ensembles and individuals to be eligible to receive awards.

Parking & Festival Admission Car parking is indicated on the attached map. Please ensure that students have a copy of the map. Admission to performance venues is $4.00 Adults and $3.00 Concession. Programs and refreshments will be on sale at the venue. Ensemble Photographs Pro Photo Booth will be photographing ensembles at the conclusion of each session. Individual portraits will also be offered. Parents are welcome to visit the photography area to purchase prints. Order forms and pricing will be available at the venue. Do not hesitate to contact Grant Rickman ([email protected]), Tim Simpson ([email protected]) on 9383 6824, or Tanya Chapman ([email protected]) on 9272 7800 if you have any questions about the Jazz Festival.
