ATTENDANCE AWARD WELL DONE CLASS 14

DON’T FORGET THE CLOCKS GO FORWARD BY 1 HOUR THIS WEEKEND FOR SPRING TIME

98.6 % Attendance for March. DO YOU KNOW THE ONLINE SITES THAT YOUR CHILD IS VISITING?

Recently our Year 6 pupils visited the classrooms and did a presentation to the children which hi - lighted the importance of keeping safe online. In today’s connected world the wealth of opportunities that technology offers is immense. However there is a darker side to this digital environment that leaves individuals vulnerable to all kinds of accidental or intentional harm. It has recently been brought to our attention that some pupils may be accessing a sight called “Omegle”. This is a free online chat website that allows users to communicate with others without the need to register. The service randomly pairs users in one on one chat sessions where they chat anonymously using the handles “You” and “Stranger”. The site also has a video mode to complement the text chat mode which means that the “strangers” can become visible using webcams and microphones. Whilst we appreciate that chats may be innocent, there is also the possibility that a child could find themselves in a situation where the other user has the intention of obtaining personal information. As a school we would like to think that all of our pupils are responsible enough and have understood the impact that can arise from visiting inappropriate sites. Fore more information about how to ensure your child stays safe online please visit www.getsafeonline.org/safeguarding-children/

YEAR 5 CAKE AND BUN SALE

MARTONGATES BIG SING! On Friday March 13th the children were treat to a fantastic singing performance by the staff. The melancholic sound of “Mama Mia” and “Lean on Me” could be heard floating around the school corridors! Mrs Gee has always wanted to lead a school choir and so she got the staff together for rehearsals ready to give the children a treat. Unfortunately due to sickness she was unable to conduct her choir, therefore there may just be another performance before the end of the school year!

EGG DECORATING COMPETITION GETS A CRACKING RESPONSE

CANCER RESEARCH COFFEE MORNING

This year one of our pupils approached Mr Carruthers with an idea to have an Easter egg decorating competition. Corey Barker from Class 12 was very keen to get as many children in school involved with the challenge. After spending time creating a poster and flyers, Corey and his friend William Birtwhistle spent most of their break and lunch times encouraging the other students to join in. Their efforts certainly paid off as we have never seen so many entries for a competition held in school. The library was awash with colourful creations, not to mention a faint egg aroma! Two of our student Teachers who were leaving us on that day, were invited to judge the entries assisted by Corey and William. This was not an easy task for Miss Tulloch and Miss Bishop who spent much time deliberating over some of the entries. However, they finally managed to agree on our year group winners. Many thanks to everyone that entered.

YEAR 2 FASHION SHOW Sometimes it get’s very busy in our school office and Miss Stubbs doesn’t always have time to finish the school newsletter. This month Year 2 have created a report from their Fashion Show and were told that one report would make it onto the newsletter. Here is the one as it was written, that captures the essence of the show. Year 2’s Fabulous Fashion Show th

On Wednesday 11 of March year2 held a fantastic, funky fashion show which used dates from the old, poor years. People wore soft, cosy, comfortable clothes from the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000. The year 2 children used lots of old, sticky materials to make their clothes from the olden days. While we were doing our research we searched on as many websites as we could to find out about what old, scruffy clothes looked like and how to make them. It took a long time to make the wonderful beautiful clothes. The children showed there event in the hall in front of the lights which had bright, shines in your eyes and your whole face. Lots of children specked before the people showed their very own outfits. The year2 children decided which date they wanted to do with a group. We decided to do a fashion show because we wanted to teach our parents about clothes from the past. We tried very hard and our design was made from paper and sweets. By Lily Asquith and Daisy Watts Class 6

BOOK FAIR Thank you to everyone who supported the book fair. We managed to raise £232 The commission will be used to replenish our school library with new books as we have a few old and tatty ones! The day was spent learning lyrics and dance moves to a song based on the number one hit “Uptown Funk”. 215 students from Martongate, Hilderthorpe, New Pasture Lane, Quay Academy and Burlington all joined together and attended workshops to learn a routine for a video. You can view the finished video via Headlands School website

www.headlandsschool.co.uk EYFS EASTER CHICKS Our EYFS pupils have had fun in their classrooms watching chicks hatch. Livingeggs.co.uk delivered eggs in an incubator on the 9th of March. The children watched as the eggs began to slowly crack and then hatch. 8 new chicks entered the world via the EYFS class rooms! The children fed them and cleaned them out. The new arrivals then spent the next week in the brooder box with the children observing the changes that happen as they grew. The chicks even had sleepover at Mrs Gees house before coming back to the classroom and being collected by “living eggs”. They will all now live on a local farm.

The Bridlington Free Press held an awards ceremony at the Rugby Club on the 6th March. The awards were to hi-light the amazing range of talent and dedication in Bridlington's sporting community. Trophies went to teams and individuals from many different sports for their prowess on the pitch and their hard work behind the scenes. Martongate's gymnasts Lily Voase, Elisha Walbyoff and Shane Tyers took home the Junior team of the year trophy. The mixed Gymnastic team won both the Yorkshire floor and vault championships and the Yorkshire Milano Championships in 2014. They then went to the national finals in both events competing against a number of private schools, but managed to finish in the top 10 both times.

The award was for the coaching of young hockey players in Bridlington that Mrs Levitt put's a lot of support, time and commitment in to. Mrs Levitt has coached our hockey team to the North east Finals of the national in 2 hockey championships for eight years in a row. The award was made that little bit more special for Mrs Levitt as two of our school pupils, Owen Tolson and Scarlett Holmes sent letters to the Bridlington Free Press nominating her.

Having trained hard, a mixed team of 9 children took part in the East Riding Hi-5 netball competition held recently at Headlands School. The Hi-5rules require participants to play in all position throughout the matches, therefore requiring players to have an excellent understanding of the rules as well a good skill level. The team, who had not previously competed, played against four other schools and finished an extremely credible second place overall. Their team spirit, determination and sporting attitude was excellent. Well done!

WELL DONE TO THE YEAR 5/6 HOCKEY TEAM Well done to the Year 5 and 6 hockey team who played in the North East of England Championships at St Peters School in York on Tuesday 24th February. The standard of competition this year was exceptionally high and the team narrowly missed qualifying for the next round by 1 goal. They played four matches, won 1, drew 2 and lost 1. The team should be very proud of their performance as they played some skilful and thoughtful hockey throughout the day. As a number of the squad are year 5 we are already looking at building on this for next year.
