Introduction Welcome to Attainment Company’s Show Me Spelling software! This program has been created to help students succeed at spelling as they learn over 500 words. A variety of “hint” options create the opportunity for each student to be challenged yet succeed at learning how to spell.

3

Installation Show Me Spelling can run directly from the CD or may be installed to your hard drive. The program must be installed to run without the CD.

Windows An AutoPlay menu appears when you insert the Show Me Spelling CD. Choose Install and follow the on-screen instructions to install the program to your hard drive. A shortcut to the program will appear in your Start menu under Attainment Company. If you prefer to run the program from the CD, click the Run button. If the AutoPlay menu does not automatically appear, select Start, choose Run and then type D:\Autoplay.exe.

Macintosh A window displaying program icons will open when you insert the Show Me Spelling CD. If this does not happen, double click the CD icon on the desktop. To begin installing the program to your hard drive, choose the Install icon. Or to run the program from the CD, double click the Show Me Spelling icon.

4

Overview Show Me Spelling’s main menu screen displays up to five “Word list” star buttons. Each star button can be assigned any built-in word list (e.g., verbs, occupations, nature and adjectives) or any custom list, which can be created and saved for future use. Pull-down menus at the top of the main menu screen provide several program settings, making it easy to tailor each session for individual students. Program options and quiz scores are accessible through the File menu. Generate custom word lists and assign lists to star buttons through the Lists menu. The Sound menu allows you to turn music, speech and sound effects on or off. Students may enter letters using the keyboard or by clicking the letters in the on-screen alphabet. Letters in the on-screen alphabet can also be selected by activating scanning mode (refer to Accessibility options on page 18).

5

How to use Show Me Spelling provides two ways to practice spelling skills. Using the default Instructional Mode, each letter must be entered correctly in order to move onto the next. If hints are needed, options may be set to help students spell the word. In contrast, the Quiz Mode does not offer hints or provide feedback if a word has been spelled incorrectly. At the end of the quiz, the program displays a detailed account of how words were spelled. Results may be printed for a permanent record.

Instructional Mode As you move the mouse over the star buttons at the bottom of the screen, the names of the assigned word lists appear. Click on the desired star button to begin spelling.

6

How to use A screen appears with a picture illustrating the word and blank spaces representing the letters of the word. After you hear the word spoken, type the correct spelling of the word.

The Exit button turns into a Back Arrow when entering letters.

Clicking the Back Arrow button deletes the last letter entered. The Exit button reappears when all letters are deleted.

7

How to use As an alternative to typing the letters, click on the alphabet letters displayed at the top of the screen. If an incorrect letter is entered, the letter disappears and you try again. When the word is complete, click the Next button or press Enter/ Return on the keyboard.

The animated character, “Stick,” celebrates after you successfully spell a word. The spelling process continues until you reach the end of the spelling list or by clicking the Exit button.

8

How to use Additional buttons at the bottom of the screen can be used when spelling words. The Hint button briefly reveals the next letter in the word or the entire word, depending on how options are set. Clicking the Show Me button prompts “Stick” to drag the entire word across the bottom of the screen. The Next button can be used at any time to skip over words.

Quiz Mode To enter Quiz Mode, click the Quiz button on the bottom right of the main menu screen. Quiz mode functions just like Instructional mode, except that no hints are available and the user’s score is recorded. Upon completing a list in Quiz Mode, the results are displayed on the screen. An option to print Quiz results is available on the Quiz results screen. Exit Quiz Mode by clicking the button again on the main menu screen.

9

Printing At the end of each quiz the number of correct answers and the number of completed words are displayed along with a percentage score. A list of the words as they were spelled by the student is displayed, with the correct spelling next to any misspelled words. Quiz results are stored until the student exits the program or begins another quiz session. To access the most recent quiz results, select Show Quiz Scores from the File pull-down menu on the Main Menu screen.

To print a hard copy of the results as a permanent record, click the printer icon button in the lower right corner of the screen.

10

Options Each session may be tailored for individual student needs. Choose Options in the File pull-down menu in the upper left corner of the Main Menu screen. Hints: Enables the Hint button in Instructional mode. Automatic: Automatically displays the hint before spelling the word and after each letter is entered. Only next letter: Displays only the next letter as the hint instead of the entire word. Enable Show Me: Enables the Show Me button in Instructional mode. Auto Scan Delay: Scanning allows for easy program navigation using single switch devices or the keyboard instead of the mouse. From the Auto Scan Delay list, choose 1, 2 or 4 seconds. (Refer to Accessibility Options on page 18 for additional scanning information.)

11

Options Cues Verbal: The spelling words will only be spoken. No illustration will be provided. Visual: Only an illustration will be displayed for each word. The words will not be spoken. Both: The spelling words will be illustrated and spoken.

12

Options Rewards Verbal: Enable spoken phrases like, “Good job!” after the user spells a word correctly. Visual: Enable the dancing “Stick” character after a word is spelled correctly. Intermittent: Enable randomly presented rewards rather than a reward after each word is spelled correctly. Verbal and/or Visual rewards must also be selected.

Letters Use only upper case: Select to display the entered letters in upper case. (Letters display in lowercase if unchecked—mixed case letters are not available.)

Sound Options Speech, Music and Sound Effects heard throughout the program can be enabled or disabled in the Sound pull-down menu on the Main Menu screen. Click on the options to enable or disable specific audible sounds.

13

Custom word lists Personalized word lists can be created and saved for quick use at any time. Only words already in the program can be used to create a custom list; new words cannot be added. To create a custom word list choose Custom from the Lists pull-down menu in the Main Menu. The Spelling Word Lists box contains all of the built-in word lists as well as any saved custom lists. Select a word list to view its words in the Words in List box below. Select individual words from the Words in List box and then click the Add button to add them to your custom list. Words that you add will appear in the Your Word List box on the right. Use the Add All button to add all the words from the selected list to Your Word List. Use the Remove or Remove All buttons to delete words from Your Word List.

14

Custom word lists Previously saved custom lists can be deleted by highlighting the word list and then clicking the Delete Custom List button, which appears only when a custom list is selected. When you are finished adding words, you must save your list before it can be assigned to a star button. Click the Save button to bring up the Save a Word List screen. Type in a name for your list in the Selected List box and then click the OK button. Previously saved lists appear in the Your Word Lists box on the right and can be deleted by first selecting the list and then clicking the Remove button. After your word list is saved you will be returned to the Main Menu. When you return to the Custom Word List screen, your saved list will appear in the Spelling Word Lists box and can be used to create additional lists.

15

Star buttons Any word list, including saved custom lists, can be assigned to any star button. To assign word lists to star buttons, select Star Buttons from the Lists pulldown menu in the Main Menu. Select a word list from the Spelling Word Lists box. The corresponding words in the list are displayed in the Words in List box below. Assign the selected word list by clicking the Set button next to the desired star button. The name of the assigned word list will appear to the right of the star button.

16

Star buttons To clear a word list from a star button double click it. Star buttons with no assigned list will not appear on the Main Menu screen. If all star buttons are cleared, one button will default to All Words. Click the Random Order checkbox next to the star buttons to display the assigned word lists in random order. If the Random Order checkbox is cleared, words in pre-defined lists are displayed in alphabetical order and words on Custom lists are displayed in the order they were created.
