ATLAS™ Trackside ETCS solution Proven Technology & Partnership For interoperability

TECHNOLOGY AND INTEGRATION EXPERTISE YOU CAN RELY ON The ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) standard aims to establish rail network interoperability and ease cross-border operation. This initiative, launched in the early 1990s by the European Community, has now expanded far beyond Europe’s frontiers. ERTMS is composed of the ETCS (European Train Control System), which is the control-command system, combined with GSM-R, the radio system for voice and data communication. Levels 1 and 2 have been implemented by suppliers while the specification of Level 3 is being finalized. The ERTMS standard allows train operators to install "trainborne" ETCS equipment in their fleets and infrastructure managers to install "trackisde" ETCS equipment on railway lines. This brochure presents Alstom's ERTMScompliant ATLAS ETCS trackside solution.

Alstom brings infrastructure managers:

> A service-proven package of trackside equipment based on ERTMS/ETCS specifications

The most up-to-date technology Alstom has already developed equipment and technologies for certain ERTMS Level 3 functionalities. Alstom was an ERTMS pioneer and key contributor to the creation of the original ERTMS specification,

> Installation, integration and commissio-

ning services for effective ERTMS/ETCS functionality on r ailway lines

working with UNISIG, UNIFE, ERA, UIC*, and the European Community as well as with train operators and infrastructure managers. It was a natural progression for us to become an early adopter and leading supplier of ETCS trainborne and

trackside solutions and to continue this key role with our permanent R&D innovation. * UNISIG: Union Industry of Signalling – UNIFE: Union of European Railway Industries – ERA: European Rail Agency – UIC: International Union of Railways

beyond technology Partnership Alstom works in partnership with customers to boost their performance and to achieve the best Life Cycle Cost for the solution we commission in the field. We determine the best maintenance plan, from the design phase, according to customer capability and organization. Status indicators are provided throughout the project, issues are anticipated and risks shared and managed. We work in liaison with the customer on maintenance and operation, and provide the training and tools to accompany teams in the required changes. For renovation projects, we manage software upgrades including decommissioning of old equipment.

Performance and punctuality Alstom's highly reliable solutions guarantee our customers the best level of operational service, as proven by our projects in commercial service. ERTMS increases line throughput safely thanks to continuous speed monitoring and data transmission between trains and the wayside signaling system. Improved maintainability (fewer components) and centralized safety data (in the RBC for Level 2), which is sent to the Automatic Train Supervision system, ensure a high level of performance in traffic regulation and punctuality.

June 2007 marked the start of revenue service on Prorail's new freight-only line from Rotterdam to Germany. This is Europe's Corridor A, which links the continent's largest port to a European-wide rail freight network. Freed from the region's traditional line, densely packed with passenger traffic, up to ten freight trains per hour and direction run safely at 120 km/h. Alstom provided ATLAS trackside ETCS Level 1 (Havenspoorlijn) and Level 2 (A15), SMARTLOCK interlocking system, SMARTWAY conventional products and ATLAS trainborne for the operator's fleet.

For Italy's new Rome - Naples high speed network, an Alstom-led consortium designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned ATLAS trackside ETCS Level 2. The 220 km line, opened for service in December 2005, was the first to operate with ERTMS Level 2 without a fallback system. Trains run at 300 km/h with a minimum headway of 2.30 minutes. Alstom also provided ATLAS trainborne for the fleet of Italian national operator Trenitalia under a separate contract. In 2010, Italy's second high speed line, Bologna-Florence, also equipped by Alstom and of which 95% is through tunnel, entered service.
