ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Celebrating 60 Years of Warrior Athletics

INDUCTION CEREMONY AND BANQUET THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2007 LOS VERDES GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CALIFORNIA

EL CAMINO COLLEGE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME A DIVISION OF THE EL CAMINO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT FOUNDATION

As we celebrate our 20th year of the Athletic Hall of Fame, we have been privileged to restore some of the past memories of the great athletes of the last 60 years. It is estimated that over 250,000 athletes have participated in athletic programs at El Camino College since the campus opened in 1947. In the first few years, an average of approximately 250 athletes per year competed in all sports at El Camino College; today’s participation is more than 500 per year. Comparing those figures to the 195 male, female, and meritorious inductees in the last 20 years, we have a long way to go to catch up. I have worked with the Athletic Hall of Fame since its inception 20 years ago, following my employment in 1958 as a coach and teacher. It has been my Sincerely, privilege to have worked with so many dedicated coaches, and teachers. Without their help and guidance, this massive project would never have survived. The one person who was instrumental in this Ray Southstone project is our retired Dean Dr. Jim Schwartz. In 1987 he Chairman & Co-Founder ECC Athletic Hall of Fame discussed with me the possibility of starting a long overdue Athletic Hall of Fame at El Camino College. It was decided to call for a dinner meeting, including as many alumni and friends we could locate, to determine the interest in such a program. The dinner meeting was scheduled for the Torrance Marriott Hotel, and we were amazed at the enthusiasm and turnout. Approximately 100 former athletes, friends, and administrators appeared to show their wholehearted support. Through the years we have relied on a great team of support staff that contributed to the success of our Hall of Fame. The staff in the dean’s office always so generously gave of their limited time to help us to stage this event. Pete Wright and Bennie Cedeño are commended for their effort each year in transporting, setting up and tearing down the impressive display of trophies, pictures, and display boards which add so much interest to the event. We would also like to thank Kelly Kappen for all the great photos taken of the affair and its guests. Dwayne Hayden donated so much time to videotape the event so the program could be replayed many nights on local cable TV. Last but not least, thanks go to the 40 to 50 alumni and friends who each September so generously donate to our fund-raising efforts, enabling us to succeed, as we are a self- funded organization which relies on donations. Our next goal will be to secure a space in which to consolidate and exhibit the many pictures (over 350), memorabilia, trophies and awards chronicling the success of Warrior athletes. This will be an important step to ensure that we preserve the many trophies and awards that mark the many victories won by our remarkable athletes at El Camino College.

Welcome to the 20th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, it seems appropriate to congratulate all of our studentathletes throughout the college’s 60-year history. The Hall of Fame Committee has once again done a great job of nominating and selecting an outstanding group of honorees for the Athletic Hall of Fame. Again this year we are recognizing athletes, coaches, and supporters who have contributed to the success of the prestigious El Camino College athletic program. We would like to sincerely thank the founders of the Athletic Hall of Fame, in particular Dr. James Schwartz, former Dean of Health Sciences, and Mr. Ray Southstone, whose enthusiasm keeps the program alive with energy, year after year. She competed in the state tournament in 2005 with a third-place finish; and again in 2006, with sixth-place finish.

DANIEL BELAY – TRACK AND CROSS COUNTRY (2005-2007 Daniel Belay is currently among the top three in the state in the 1,500 meters, 3,000 steeplechase, and 5,000 meters. With the championship meets still a month away, he is in a good position to place high – if not win – the South Coast Conference, Southern California, and State Championships. It is very competitive this year, and he is in great company. Over the course of his two-year career at El Camino College, Daniel is one of those rare exceptional athletes who does the most with the least. He has been, and remains, the driving force and inspiration for our men’s cross country and track & field teams and everyone who knows him and his accomplishments have great respect for him – including every one of his competitors. In his two years with our program, Daniel’s dedication has been at the highest level. He has not missed one training session and has managed to progress well academically and is in a position to transfer to a university in the fall. Universities that are currently aggressively recruiting him include: the University of California at Santa Barbara; California State University, Fullerton; California State University, Chico; and the University of California at Riverside. He is extremely competitive yet very personable – a tremendous young man with a BIG heart of gold who does anything necessary to succeed.

Criteria for Judging

Inductees may fulfill one of these categories: Athlete, Coach or Meritorious Service.

1. Nominee has attained high public visibility and is recognized for longstanding and significant commitment to the community.

All inductees must exemplify the highest ideals of intercollegiate athletics and prove to be of high moral character.

2. Nominee has made outstanding professional contributions to the community. 3. Nominee’s athletic achievement, accomplishments and honors while attending El Camino College will be considered.

If a college coach is to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, he or she must have coached at El Camino College for at least 10 years. Winning records are important but more important is the positive influence the coach may have had on the student athletes at El Camino College.

4. Nominee’s athletic achievement, accomplishments and honors beyond El Camino College will be considered.

Meritorious Service recipients must exhibit a dedication and loyalty to athletes and to the total athletic program at El Camino College.

5. Nominee has made an outstanding contribution to the athletic and educational program.
