2015 MHS Cross Country August 11, 2015 Parent/Athlete Code Meeting Notes for CC Parents/Athletes Head Coach: Adam Topper (17th year coaching, 14th as Head Coach) Varsity Girls Coach: Craig Olson (18th Year Coaching) JV Boys Coach: Lisa Tavares (7th Year Coaching) JV Girls Coach: David Berger (2nd Year Coaching – Coached 7 years with us in past) Volunteer Coach: Tracey Sorenson (2 nd Year Coaching) Practices: -

Handout for the practice schedule for first two weeks During School, practice runs from 3:30 to 5:30 Optional Wednesdays: Starting on Sept. 16 through October 14, Wednesday practices are optional. Please use these Optional Wednesdays to schedule Doctor/Dentist Appointments or other appointments that need to be done after school. Please let Coach Topper know (in writing) in advance any practices that your son/daughter will be missing

Time Trial/Camping Trip: Date: Saturday, August 22, 2015 Time: Athletes should be at HS by 3:45 PM with the race Start at 5:00 PM Location: HS Course, HS Commons, & SDMA Environmental Site, near Knapp What: There will be a race in which all HS athletes will race against any alumni and/or parents and family members who wish to race (please check in with Coach Topper if you plan to race). After the race and awards ceremony we will have a family picnic. After that, the athletes will stay overnight at the site and participate in team activities and spend time getting to know each other. What is needed from Parents during the season: - Camping Trip: In order to make the camping trip work, the coaching staff will need a few parent volunteers to assist with supervision at the site. Please contact Coach Topper if you would be willing to come out and spend the night with the team. If we don't have enough parent volunteers by Wednesday, August 19th, the campout will be cancelled! - Team Meals: The day prior to every meet we have the team go to one family’s house for a meal. We ask parents to sign up for a date that they would like to host a meal, or help someone else host a meal. We should have about 45-50 athletes on the team again this year. Typically 35-40 people attend the meals. It is a large job for the host families, but it is an invaluable bonding time for our athletes. If you are interested, please sign up with Coach Topper after this meeting or contact him at 715-307-3691 or by e-mail [email protected]. - Meet Concession Stands: We will be hosting our annual home meet on September 12th this season as well as the Big Rivers Conference Meet on October 17th. Every year we have a concession stand at this meet that is one of our primary fundraisers for the year. We will need parents to volunteer to help run the stand, as well as provide many of the items that are sold at the stand. - Football Concession Stands: Every year we get a substantial amount of money from the booster club. The reason we get a share of this money is because we provide workers for the football concession stand. We need three volunteers for the August 20 th game. See me after the meeting if you are interested in helping! - Parent Group Leader(s): I need at least one parent to volunteer to be the Parent Group Leader. This person will (1) Be in charge of the concession stands at our home meets, coordinating what needs to be purchased and what needs to be donated. (2) Help to find hosts/help for team meals. (3) Help coordinate the team potluck at the end of the year banquet. (4) Communicate with Booster Club, Activities office, and Coach Topper any concerns of the parent group. Please see Coach Topper after this meeting if you are interested in being a parent group leader.

Equipment for Cross Country Cross Country is a sport of little equipment, unlike some other sports that require thousands of dollars of equipment. Things every athlete will NEED: - “Good” Running Shoes. “Good” is different for every runner, I recommend that you have your athlete go to a shoe store that has an employee that knows something about running shoes (Scheels in Eau Claire is probably the closest) Make sure your athlete tries several different pairs on, runs around the store a little bit in them and chooses the shoe that FEELS the best (which may not be the cutest or most expensive!) - T-Shirt and Shorts. A comfortable pair of shorts and a t-shirt will be the only other things the athlete needs for practice. - Watch. After good running shoes, a watch (with stopwatch function) is probably the most important piece of equipment for a runner. You can pretty easily pick up a watch that will do the job for under $10. - Uniform. Each athlete will be issued a uniform which they will wear in races. They must return the same uniform that was issued to them at the end of the season or they will be charged a fee to replace it. (note: all athletes have the option of buying their uniform shorts and then keeping them) Things that athletes may want: - A Team T-shirt. We order team t-shirts every year. The cost is $5. We have short-sleeved tshirts this year, we'd like everyone to get one, but let me know if the price is an issue and we'll see what we can do for you! - Team Bag. We offer team duffle bags for $30. They will have the athlete’s name embroidered on them and are a good deal. - Please stop by at the end of the meeting to order any of the extra equipment. If you can pay tonight, that will be helpful as we can not order until everyone has paid! Website: Over the past several Cross Country and Track seasons Coaches Topper & Olson have worked to keep the track/cc websites up to date and provide information for parents and athletes. We will be doing the same again this fall for the Cross Country website, find it here: http://mhs.sdmaonline.com/?PageName='SportPage'&SportID='18797'

You can also navigate to it by going to the High School homepage http://mhs.sdmaonline.com then to the Sports page and scrolling down until you find the Cross Country link. You will be able to find information about meets, with directions and course maps, as well as directions to pre-meet meal host locations. Results will be linked and comments from the coaches will be posted. Check it out often!
