Swim- please do not swim on your own in Katy’s Cove as we cannot provide water safety outside of our race schedule. Wear a bright swim cap and partner up with a buddy & tell friends and family where you are going. There may be a $1.00 fee to swim in the Cove. Cycling – all roads are open to traffic and downtown St Andrews (Water Street) can be busy with vehicles in the summer. Please obey the rules of the road and do not ride double or triple file. We rely on the support of our wonderful community to host this race and we know that Triathletes will express their thanks to the town’s people by cycling with consideration for others.

Swim Safety There are a number of things we will be doing as Race Directors to ensure a safe and fair race but there are also several thing that you can do to ensure a safe and enjoyable swim. 1. Ensure that you are sufficiently fit enough to swim further than your race distance. 2. Do not race in a new or borrowed wetsuit – make sure you have swum in open water with it several times so that you are familiar with how it feels and that its not too tight. 3. Do not stand around on a hot day with your wetsuit fully zipped up – this will cause dehydration. 4. Adrenaline will be coursing through your veins on race morning, do not get carried away and start at the front of the pack if you are a mid-pack swimmer. 5. Start slowly, a race is not won in the first 50 metres, start easily and build into your swim. 6. Look for clear water away from the crowd. 7. Learn how to site the swim buoys, practice siting in open water training – you do not want to swim any further than you have to. 8. Swim & Train with a group in open water, get used to being kicked, pushed & punched. 9. Ensure you have a proper warm up, do not go from standing still on the beach to a maximum effort into the swim. 10. Be realistic about your ability level, if you need to take a break during the swim, hold onto a kayak before proceeding. 11. If you get into difficulty – stop, roll over on your back and raise your hand and a kayaker will come to you. 12. Volunteers in Kayaks or Boats will be allowed to remove you from the race if you appear to be a danger to yourself or others. 13. Make sure your timing chip is safely secured to your ankle once you put your wetsuit on. These comments are not meant to instill fear in anyone but we need you to be aware that the potential risk of injury or incident is highest in the swim and we are simply highlighting a few things we all can due to reduce that risk.

17

Run Cut Off Time and Race Closure Time All athletes remaining on the course at 3.30pm will not have a recorded finishing time and support will be removed from the aid stations. This will be 8 hours total race duration.

Finish Line Policy Friends and/or family members are permitted to cross the finish line with their participating athletes. Please assemble in the designated area to join your runner as they approach the Finish Line. This policy will allow each competitor the chance to celebrate their accomplishment with their greatest supporter or their inspiration. We also need to ensure the safety of all participants, volunteers and your greatest fans: your friend or family member will need to leave the finish chute via the designated path as soon as you have crossed the finish line.

Finish Line Flow Please remember that the Finish Chute is still part of the race course and athletes may be sprinting for the finish. Be aware of those athletes around you and do not impede their way. As you proceed through the Finish Line and are presented with your Finishers Medal you will be met by one of our Team Members who will either guide you through to the Finish Line Food area or toward the medical tent depending on your physical condition once you finish. Please note that friends and family will not be allowed into the Medical tent but there will be an Info Desk where they can seek information about your condition. There will also be a Massage area available for those tired muscles.

Race Timing Challenge St Andrews will be timed by Atlantic Chip timing. Timing Chips – Will be distributed on race morning at the entrance to Transition - No Chip = No Race Time – The timing chip is to be worn throughout the entire race and can be attached using the Velcro band. While swimming, the chip must be worn under the wetsuit. Fasten it to either ankle with the Velcro strap provided before the swim

start and leave it on until after you finish the run. You may apply Vaseline around your ankle. It will not affect the chip.

28

Chips should be returned to the Finish Line or handed to any race official. Lost or unreturned chips will carry a charge back to the athlete. By picking up your race number and chip, you are guaranteeing that you will return the chip to race management, or you will be billed for its replacement. If you drop out or are pulled from the race at any time, turn your chip and strap in to a race official. Failure to do so may disqualify you from participating in future Challenge events. It is essential that we know where you are on the course at all times for your safety and our peace of mind. If you are transported to any medical station, the medical staff will take responsibility for your chip. You must wear your timing chip at all times while you are racing.

Relay Instructions- Team members must pass their timing chip to their team member at the end of their particular course leg. Every member of the relay team must go through the Registration process. All exchanges take place at the Relay Designated Exchange Zone, transferring timing chip to next athlete. Only the runner must wear the Bib number. Volunteers will help you remove the strap and chip at the finish line. If you do not start the race on Sunday, you are still responsible for returning the chip to race management. All Team Members may cross the Finish Line together as a Team.

No Timing Chip – No Finishing Time

Anti-Doping Policy

29

Challenge St Andrews takes the issue of doping very seriously and we have been working hard to ensure that every competitor is racing on a level playing field. We follow the ITU rules of Triathlon as adopted by Triathlon Canada and Triathlon New Brunswick. All competitors accept these rules as a condition of participation and shall be bound by them. All Athletes participating at a Competition or Event shall be subject to In-Competition Testing by the ITU, the Athlete's National Federation, Anti-Doping Organizations or any other organization promoting Events in the sport of triathlon. Further review of the Anti-Doping Rules are at the following link: http://www.triathlon.org/uploads/docs/itu-anti-doping-rules-final-1jan11.pdf

Head Race Official - Technical Delegate – Linda McLeod The number one priority of the Technical Officials is to ensure your safety and to provide each athlete with a fair and equal field of play by following the rules as set out in the ITU Competition Rules. Challenge events are based on the ITU Competition Rules, so while the racing is the same there may be small but important variances in the rules that may have an impact on your race so it will be important for you attend the Mandatory Race Briefing.

You can find a link to the Competition Rules by clicking on this link http://www.triathlon.org/uploads/docs/itusport_competition-rules_november2015.pdf It is the athlete’s responsibility to know and understand the race rules and to know the race course but here are couple of key rules: Field of Play = any point on the course on which you are racing Drafting – Draft zone is 12m, 25 seconds to pass Blocking – Impeding another athlete from passing Littering – Stop and collect litter or penalty will be DQ, think of the communities you are racing in Bare Torso – You must have your Torso covered when leaving Transition (T1 / T2) – no bare torso Outside Assistance – No running / biking with or pacing, passing objects to, assisting in repairs from friends or family. Nudity or Indecent Exposure = DSQ, this applies to the entire Field of Play. . Bike Helmet / Chin Strap – Please wear your helmet whenever you are around the Field of Play with your Bike. Do not ride around town prior, during or after the race with no helmet. . Mount / Dismount Line –Obey the instructions given by volunteers and make sure you locate these lines prior to race day. Unaltered Race Number – Race numbers must not be altered in any way = DSQ

30

Penalties - Appendix K from the ITU Rules is a great resource for infractions and penalties. Penalties assessed on the Swim portion will be served in T1. Penalties assessed on the Bike and/or Run portion will be served in the Penalty Tent located on the hill on Prince of Wales roughly 500m from the race finish line. Multiple penalties may result in a DQ. If you have been judged to have incurred a penalty your number will be displayed on a White Board and you must serve your penalty as per ITU Competition Rules. It is your responsibility to check the Penalty Box for your number. Failure to serve your penalty may result in disqualification. This year we are going to have Wave Starts, thus reducing the washing machine effect, to make the swim a more enjoyable leg of the event. Water temperature will be taken one hour before the Start.

Helmets Competitors who do not wear helmets while cycling at the race site (warming up, taking bike to transition, riding back to their car, etc.) may be disqualified from the competition.

Outside Assistance Competitors may not receive assistance at any time during the race, or in the transition zone. (This excludes medical or safety assistance by qualified race staff.) Outside assistance includes, among other things, any person running or riding alongside a competitor; fixing flat tires or replacing chains, passing to or taking from any competitor clothing, shoes, hats, or similar articles; a person, other than the competitor, removing gear from the transition area while the race is in progress; demonstrating or indicating by any means, visual or aural, the location in the transition area of a competitors bike and rack; other similar actions according to the judgement of the Head Official (and as such are not subject to protest or appeal). Please contact me on [email protected] if you know someone willing to volunteer at the race or you can register to Volunteer on-line through the following link - http://challenge-standrews.com/volunteer/

Post-Race Instructions Tear-down of the transition area must begin immediately following the finish of the last competitor. Please be considerate of race crew and remove your race gear and any litter in your transition area. Race organizers are not responsible for any items left unattended after the finish of the race at 4.00pm.

Medical Information Our aim as a local organizing committee is to provide our athletes with a safe field of play and to ensure the health and safety of the athletes competing in Challenge St Andrews. We have been working hard over the last year to plan and implement many procedures to ensure a safe race but you the athlete can also assist us with this by following the rules of our sport and making sure that you are trained sufficiently to undertake a race of this nature. The medical tent is for athletes only and family members are not allowed access. Overcrowding in the medical tent prevents the medical staff from doing their job. Please take advantage of the on-course Nutrition provided by Hammer and ensure that your bike is equipped with 2 full bottles before leaving transition. Important Note – We ran a trial event in 2013 called Tri St Andrews. Race Day temperature was 32 degrees celcius with a humidex of 40 degrees. This was an exception and we anticipate race day will be cooler but please prepare for extreme conditions. Dehydration – make use of the aid stations located at regular intervals throughout the course stocked with water and Hammer Nutrition. Dehydration may cause cramping, muscle ache or other performance deteriorating symptoms. Dehydration may worsen with fatigue and be more difficult to regulate temperature. Please practice your Nutrition in training and we highly recommend using Hammer products on long runs and bike rides. Bike Course – be aware that motorized vehicles will be on the course and obey the rules of the road including riding to the right of your lane and follow instructions provided by volunteers and officials. Pre-Existing Medical Conditions – you have a responsibility to provide the Race Organizers with any preexisting medical conditions that could impact your race. There will be a Medical tent at the Finish Line area and personnel will be on the course. If you feel unwell please go to the nearest aid station and they will assist you. If you have unique medical concerns (allergies, unusual or chronic medical problems), you must bring those to the attention of the race medical staff so we can be prepared if you need emergency medical care. Seeking medical care does not automatically result in disqualification. Decision of the Race Doctor is final.

34

Medical Tent Policy - the most critical athletes will receive immediate and efficient medical treatment on arrival at the Medical tent. Whenever possible, oral fluid replacement will be given as a preference to IV fluid replacement. Please abide by the decision of our triage team in this regard. Travel Insurance – If you are traveling to New Brunswick from out of Province or from another country please ensure that you have comprehensive Medical Coverage as hospital treatment is expensive. Do on race day what you do in training! – monitor your fluid and nutrition intake while training and replicate this during the race – do not try anything new on race day regarding nutrition and do not eat or drink in excess. NSAIDS – Non-Steroidial Anti-inflammatory Drugs – use of these during a race is not recommended and may contribute to hyponatremia by action on the kidney. Do not use within 48 hours of race day. Optimal Race Fitness – Challenge St Andrews is a serious endurance event, please ensure that your body is trained and conditioned for an event of this distance. Do not be embarrassed or concerned about visiting the medical tent, it is always better to prevent an incident and live to race another day. Know your body and know and accept your limitations If you feel ill… - if you feel ill, nauseas, vomit, have a headache, feel dizzy or become confused or disoriented please report to the medical tent for assessment.

How to Qualify for the Canadian Age-Group ITU World Championship Team Please visit the Triathlon Canada webpage for more information on representing Canada at the 2017 World Championships in Penticton, BC, August 2017 http://www.triathloncanada.com/en/athletes/agegroup/itu_ag_team/worlds/ 1. Eligible athletes wishing to obtain a spot on any of the ITU Age-Group World Championship team must be: Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident

World Championship. Note that athletes may qualify for Long Distance Triathlons using a half distance triathlon or greater. The race must be completed in the qualification year (e.g., Complete a race in 2016 for the 2017 World Championship). 2. An athlete wishing to obtain a spot can race in any qualifying event across Canada granted they are an annual member of his/her Provincial Sport Organization for triathlon. For example, a Triathlon Ontario member can race in a qualifying event in British Columbia and obtain a spot. 3. Because athletes are qualifying for the 2017 World Championships, qualification will be determined by Age Adjusted Results – results with birthdays as of December 31st, 2017 and NOT race day results. If an athlete is 1st in the race day results, but is bumped to 2nd in the Age Adjusted results, that athlete does NOT automatically qualify for a spot if there is only 1 spot available at the qualifying event. 4. Athletes who have “automatically qualified” are those who have placed 1st (for example) at a qualifying event with 1 spot per age group category per gender in the Age Adjusted Results. He/she can register for a spot as soon as the official age adjusted race results are posted. Triathlon Canada will accept registration upon confirmation of the results. 5. It is the responsibility of the qualifying event’s organizing committee to forward a full copy of the age adjusted race results to Triathlon Canada within 24 hours of the event. A full copy is required in order to confirm acceptance or rejection of a spot on the World Championship Team by Triathlon Canada. 6. The selection of Canadian Age-Group World Championship teams is designed to identify and select the topperforming age-group athletes at qualification events. There are three (3) stages within which selection priorities are identified. Stage 1: Automatic Qualification - Registration is available immediately upon qualification The first selection stage is for athletes that compete and earn a spot at a designated Qualification Event.

36

Stage 2: Roll-down Qualification - Registration is available October 15th, 0900PST - October 31, 1200PST February 10, 2016 Should there be any spots still available after Stage 1, Stage 2 will commence based on the priority level of the event and age-group placing. If spots are still available after priority 1 events, roll-down to priority 2 events will commence and so on. Event priority is established as: 1. Canadian Championship events; 2. Canadian hosted international events (e.g., ITU World Cup); and, 3. Provincial Qualification Event. If there is a tied placing in two separate same priority level events, the athlete with the closest percentage to the winner’s time will be selected. Triathlon Canada will confirm registrations and participation of Stage 2 applicants on the World Championship team only after October 31, 1200PST when Stage 2 is closed. No registrations for Stage 2: Roll-down qualifiers will be accepted after this deadline. All athletes are welcome to register in Stage 3: Open Registration. Stage 3: Open Registration - Registration available on November 15th Should there be any spots still available after Stages 1 and 2, all eligible athletes may apply for open registration. Selection of athletes to the team at this stage is on a first come first serve basis, as decided upon receipt on fully completed registration documents. Athletes deemed ineligible due to being unable to support a provincially sanctioned race in Canada can become eligible in Stage 3 registration for $500*. All Athletes are responsible for knowing in which Stage they qualified and the associated time-frame for application. Athletes will receive confirmation of their application as soon as possible following Selection Stages noted above. 7. Athletes must pay their team & uniform fee at the time of registration. A further $400 hold for their race entry fee is applied to their account. The Race Entry fee is NOT debited from their account at the time of registration as the exact amount is determined and released by the local organizing committee. For the full breakdown of fees visit www.triathloncanada.com, under Age Group Teams section. Garth Millar Race Director Challenge St Andrews E-mail contact - [email protected]
