Message from the Rector Dear People of God, Some members of our Cathedral Staff sat down for months to look at who we are as the Cathedral and where we are going. They recently proposed to me a brand new mission statement for us at the Cathedral and after hearing the passion and beauty that is steeped in these simple words, I have decided to adapt it for our Faith Community with the support of our entire Staff. This mission statement gets not only at who we are as the Cathedral parish of the Archdiocese of Chicago, but hits to the core of who Christ has called all of us to be as disciples. This is who we are and hope to be as Holy Name Cathedral. So let our story be rooted in these words: “As missionary disciples of Jesus Christ we celebrate, transform, and engage our diverse Cathedral parish through worship, life-long formation and service to one another.” Notice our mission statement starts with the profound statement not of who we are as the Cathedral parish, but rather, who we are by virtue of our common baptism. We are missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. Everything we are, everything we do, stems from the understanding that we are Christ’s modern day disciples called to go out into the world and spread the Good News. Pope Francis wrote so beautifully in The Joy of the Gospel that “every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization; indeed, anyone who has truly experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love. Every Christian is a missionary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are ‘disciples’ and ‘missionaries’, but rather that we are always ‘missionary disciples.’” Now, how we embrace that call at Holy Name Cathedral is where our mission statement becomes personal. As missionary disciples we celebrate. We celebrate our faith when we gather around the Altar of the Lord. We celebrate our family when we gather for our yearly Gala, or for Coffee-in-the-Courtyard, or for our Pancake Breakfast and various other moments to grow in community with one another. We celebrate our diversity through our Cathedral Filipino Network, our Friends of Fr. Augustus Tolton and the way we engage our varied ethnicities through worship. As missionary disciples we transform. We transform our neighborhood as we bring a message of hope, love and mercy through our concern for others at the Thursday and Friday night suppers at Catholic Charities. We transform others through an encounter with Christ in us as we minister to the sick through our Ministry of Care. We transform our lives as we seek to grow in relationship with Christ through opportunities for life-long formation. As missionary disciples we engage. We engage the gifts God has given us by being active members of our family of faith by sharing generously of our time, talent and treasure. We engage one another through a spirit of welcome and hospitality and open doors for all who seek refuge and peace in our Cathedral. We engage our call to be missionary disciples by heeding the challenge at the end of Mass to “go in peace, glorifying the Lord by our life.” This mission should be what roots us together in ministry. This mission should be what people think of when they meet someone from Holy Name Cathedral. This mission is who we are as Christians; this statement is Holy Name Cathedral. Together we are the Body of Christ loving this world back into life. In the Lord, Father Greg 2

Stewardship Thank you to those who regularly and generously give of their treasure as well as those who give of their time and talent to support the work of our Cathedral.

Trust is the Secret. Our First Reading from the Old Testament Book of Habbakuk is once again from someone we consider to be a minor prophet. Habbakuk was writing more than 600 years before the birth of Christ, yet he addresses a stewardship approach to life in ways that are significant to us today. Scholars generally agree that the overall theme of Habbakuk is trying to grow from a faith that might be termed perplexing and sometimes doubtful to a point where we place absolute trust in God. Trust in God is the key for us to be good stewards, and it is at the crux of the power of faith. In his Memoirs Pope Benedict XVI said, “The more I reflect on it, the more I understand that the nature of human life is that it is ever Holy Saturday, not Easter Sunday. We are still awaiting Easter; we are not standing in full light, but walking toward it full of trust.” That trust is the secret! Registration necessary. Facilitator: Julie Berggren, MA. 312.573.4427 [email protected] Let Us Continue to Prayer for Peace Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life. 11
