“At Suffah we strive

to achieve excellence” Head Teacher’s Message Welcome to Suffah Primary School and thank you so much for your interest in our school. Suffah Primary School is a warm and caring community housed in a building that incorporates the largest Mosque in West London. At the beginning of 2014 we extended our facilities with the launch of our vibrant new Early Years building which is proving enormously popular. As a team we constantly strive to achieve the very best for you and your child to create successful and happy children. Education is a partnership between home and school and we place a great deal of emphasis on our relationship with parents. We believe that children learn best when home and school work together for their benefit in a caring Islamic environment. We hope that this prospectus gives you a flavour of what our wonderful school has to offer, but we would like you to visit us so that you can see the school in action and understand what we are all about. If you have any questions in the meantime please contact the school office.

The governing body includes the head teacher and trustees; the chair of the mosque trustees is currently the chair of governors. Pupils come from a wide geographical area and from many different ethnic and cultural heritages, including Bangladeshi, Moroccan, Pakistani, Somali and Sudanese. Learning through the ages As a primary school we educate children aged from 4 to 11 covering the Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Early Years: Reception Class (4-5 year olds) The Foundation Stage makes a crucial contribution to children’s early development and learning. We provide children with a rich variety of teaching and learning experiences that are appropriate to their needs. The Foundation Stage is about developing such key learning skills; as listening, speaking, concentrating, and persistence and learning to work and co-operate with others. The six areas of learning that make up the Foundation Stage Curriculum are: Personal, Social and Emotional development Understanding of the World Communication, Language and Literacy Mathematical development Physical development Expressive Art & Design Development The outdoor environment is also a special part of the Early Years curriculum. As such it is carefully planned for and available each day.

The Curriculum The core curriculum at Key Stages 1 and 2 comprises: English Mathematics Science Information Communication Technology (ICT) Children also study the subjects below as part of the National Curriculum. These are called Foundation Subjects: Art and Design Design Technology (DT) History Geography Nasheed Physical Education Tarbiyyah The curriculum is taught creatively through ‘themes’ every half term. Links between core and foundation subjects are made as much as possible.

Islamic Curriculum The Islamic Curriculum comprises study of the Noble Qur’an, Arabic and Islamic Studies. Children are taught to read, memorise and understand the Noble Qur’an. In Islamic Studies, children study Fiqh, Seerah, Adab, Akhlaaq, Sunnahs, and Du’as. All children in Key Stage 2 pray the daily Dhuhr salaah in congregation. Key Stage 1 children are taught how to pray correctly under teacher supervision.

“In lessons where the teaching is outstanding, it is characterised by excellent subject knowledge, exemplary questioning technique that helps pupils to review prior learning briefly but very effectively, and then build their knowledge and skills systematically, and a consistent level of challenge that enables pupils to excel.” Ofsted Report 2015

Learning at Suffah Primary School Creative Curriculum Staff work incredibly hard to ensure the children at Suffah Primary School receive a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum which engages them and challenges their learning. Each year group studies six different themes across the year and individual subjects are woven into the topic to create memorable learning experiences and ensure robust academic achievement.

Inclusive Provision Within each class work is differentiated to suit the needs of the individual child. Inclusive provision includes learning difficulties as well as meeting the needs of the especially gifted and talented. The staged approach of the Code of Practice for the identification and assessment of Special Educational Needs operates within the school. Once a difficulty is identified efforts are made to meet that need and progress is carefully monitored through an Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.). At later stages the class teacher may seek support from outside agencies. Parents are fully consulted and encouraged to actively participate at all stages. As a small independent school we are unable to accommodate children who are diagnosed with serious difficulties.

School Shura Council Two representatives from each class regularly attend meetings held to discuss items on the agenda drawn up from suggestions made by the children themselves about key issues affecting them in school.

Partnership with Parents Home and school At Suffah Primary School we value and appreciate the important role that you have to play in supporting your child and developing a positive attitude to school and learning. At Suffah Primary School we offer a wide range of opportunities for parents to actively participate in supporting their children in school. These include: Parent/teacher consultations – this is an opportunity to find out how your child is doing in school. School Newsletter – Each half term a whole school newsletter is sent out to all parents including notices for upcoming events and a summary of events that have taken place. Class Newsletter — Each half term the class newsletter is sent out to parents.

Induction We have a comprehensive Induction plan which runs throughout the summer term prior to the children joining our reception classes in the following September. These include: Reception Induction Meeting for all reception parents to give up to date information on the year ahead. Home visits by the Reception team just before the children start school in September.

PTA Alhamdulillah, the Suffah Primary School PTA is a vibrant and dedicated organization within the school’s community. Without the physical and financial help of the PTA, the school would be unable to provide many additional opportunities for children. The PTA needs the support of every parent and well-wisher of Suffah. The fundraising efforts of the PTA have enabled the school to purchase: a minibus; Interactive White Boards (IWBs) with Overhead Projectors and various Sports equipment.

The Governing Body Our Governing Body takes a full part in the life of the school. The Governors bring to their role a wide breadth of interest, experience and expertise.
