PASTORAL MESSAGE Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption,

Christ is Risen!!! Together we celebrate our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ’s victory over death! His crucifixion and resurrection have freed us from the consequences of our fallen human nature and He is among us now as we approach the Blessed Great and Holy Feast of Pentecost! Going forward in life we must realize that the greatest of all debts has been lifted from our shoulders: the generational debt that could not be repaid except through Christ’s victory over death. He has loosened us from our bonds; He has given us true pursuit of eternal happiness; He has given us life and hope! Let these Holy days not be routine. Let us not accept the status quo. Each of us must examine our life in the context of what He has given us, and in return offer back to him the appropriate gifts of thanksgiving and love—which is nothing less than our whole life! May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Love of God the Father and the Communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all!!! Worshipping His 3rd Day Blessed Resurrection, I remain, In His Service,

Rev. Father Jon Boukis PROISTAMENOS

GENERAL ASSEMBLY NOTICE OF PARISH ASSEMBLY TO BE HELD ON MAY 15, 2011 An assembly of all the stewards* of the parish will occur on Sunday, May 15, following the DIVINE LITURGY. The agenda will be as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Opening Prayer / Attendance Determination of Quorum* requirement of parishioners** Election of Assembly Chairperson Minutes of Previous Assembly Reports a. Parish Priest’s Report b. 2010 Parish Council President’s Report on Audited Financials c. Treasurer’s Report d. Stewardship e. Cultural Festival Update 6. Property Capital Improvements (HVAC, hall roof, etc.) 7. Parish Bylaws 8. Unfinished Business 9. New Business affecting the life of the Parish 10. Adjournment / Closing Prayer *Quorum The presence of not less than twenty-five percent (25%) of the Parishioners in good standing shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of any business. The Parishioners at a regular or special Parish Assembly meeting at which a quorum was present when initially convened may continue until adjournment to validly and properly transact all appropriate business and take any proper actions notwithstanding the fact that such attendance at such meeting may subsequently drop below twenty-five percent (25%) of the Parishioners in good standing; provided that for any action which requires a two-thirds (2/3) vote at a first called meeting there must be at least twenty-five percent (25%) of the Parishioners in good standing present to approve such action. If a quorum cannot be achieved, no vote can be taken. Within twenty-one (21) days, a Parish Assembly shall be called a second time. At such time, decisions may be taken by the number of parishioners in good standing present, with the exception of matters pertaining to the purchase, sale or encumbering of Parish property which shall require a quorum.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY **Parishioners Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized according to the rites of the Church, or was received into the Church through Chrismation, who lives according to the Faith and canons of the Church, abides by the Uniform Parish Regulations and these appended by-laws, and fulfills his or her financial obligation to the Parish, and cooperates in every way towards the well being of the Parish is a member in good standing of the Parish. The definition of “fulfilling one’s financial obligation to the Parish” is by necessity a flexible one. Generally, for purposes of participating in Parish Assemblies and elections, one must offer his or her primary stewardship to the parish and is considered to have fulfilled his or her stewardship and financial obligations to the Parish if he or she has pledged and paid an amount certain for the year prior to the current year and has no outstanding pledge balances for any year prior. However, in the event an individual refuses or neglects to pledge a specific amount for the prior year, but he or she has committed himself spiritually, morally and financially (at a minimum of 50% of the parish’s prior year average pledge) to the Greek Orthodox Faith and the parish and the records of the parish so reflect the financial commitment, he or she will be considered to have fulfilled his or her financial obligation and be eligible to vote. (Stewardship is recommended to be ten percent (10%) of one’s annual income as stated in Holy Scripture to help meet the financial obligations of the Parish, the Metropolis and the Archdiocese.) In instances of financial hardship for a parishioner, the Parish Priest or Parish Council President may waive or modify provisions of this paragraph. It is expected that adults over the age of eighteen (18) be stewards of the Church, with exceptions for dependent college students, active duty armed forces personnel and instances of temporary hardship. There is not a category “family membership.”

THIS MEETING IS VERY IMPORTANT AS WE MAY ADOPT OUR NEW PARISH BYLAWS.

PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING.

VOTING MEMBERS According to the definition of “Member in Good Standing,” as defined by the 2010 Spring General Assembly and adopted at the 2010 Fall General Assembly, a person is considered in good standing with the Parish so long as: 1. 2. 3. 4.

there are no canonical impediments separating him/her from the Church, one’s primary parish is the Assumption, an amount certain has been pledged and fulfilled for the prior year, and there are no prior year outstanding stewardship pledges.

In the case that one’s primary parish is the Assumption, there are no canonical impediments or prior year balances but a stewardship card was not submitted, one may still be a member as long as stewardship contributions for the prior year exceed ½ of the primary steward’s average ($580 for 2010). Those stewards that are in good standing may speak and vote at parish assemblies, run for parish council, use the church for Sacraments without a facility usage fee (Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals) and rent the fellowship hall.

For the 2011 Calendar Year, there are 115 Members in Good Standing. For a General Assembly Quorum, 29 must be in attendance. If there is no quorum, the General Assembly will be rescheduled as outlined in the UPR.

SAINT JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN Celebrated May 8 This Apostle was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of James the elder. First a fisherman by trade, he became an Apostle and the beloved Disciple of Christ. Only he of all the Disciples followed Him even to the Cross, and was entrusted with the care of our Saviour's Mother, as it were another son to her, and a brother of Christ the Teacher. After this, he preached throughout Asia Minor, especially in Ephesus. When the second persecution against the Christians began in the year 96 during the reign of Domitian, he was taken in bonds to Rome, and there was cast into a vat filled to the brim with boiling oil. Coming forth therefrom unharmed, he was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Returning again to Ephesus after the death of the tyrant, he wrote his Gospel (after the other Evangelists had already written theirs) and his three Catholic Epistles. In all, he lived ninety-five years and fell asleep in the Lord during the reign of Trajan in the year 100. He was called Theologian because he loftily expounded in his Gospel the theology of the inexpressible and eternal birth of the Son and Word of God the Father. It is for this cause that an eagle-a symbol of the Holy Spirit, as Saint Irenaeus says-is depicted in his icon, for this was one of the four symbolic living creatures that the Prophet Ezekiel saw (Ezek. 1:10).

SAINTS CONSTANTINE AND HELEN Celebrated May 21 This great and renowned sovereign of the Christians was the son of Constantius Chlorus (the ruler of the westernmost parts of the Roman empire), and of the blessed Helen. He was born in 272, in Naissus of Dardania, a city on the Hellespont. In 306, when his father died, he was proclaimed successor to his throne. In 312, on learning that Maxentius and Maximinus had joined forces against him, he marched into Italy, where, while at the head of his troops, he saw in the sky after midday, beneath the sun, a radiant pillar in the form of a cross with the words: "By this shalt thou conquer." The following night, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning, he immediately ordered that a labarum be made (which is a banner or standard of victory over the enemy) in the form of a cross, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of October, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate, while Licinius, his brother-in-law, ruled in the East. But out of malice, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him once and again, and utterly destroyed him in 324, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East. Under him and because of him all the persecutions against the Church ceased. Christianity triumphed and idolatry was overthrown. In 325 he gathered the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which he himself personally addressed. In 324, in the ancient city of Byzantium, he laid the foundations of the new capital of his realm, and solemnly inaugurated it on May 11, 330, naming it after himself, Constantinople. Since the throne of the imperial rule was transferred thither from Rome, it was named New Rome, the inhabitants of its domain were called Romans, and it was considered the continuation of the Roman Empire. Falling ill near Nicomedia, he requested to receive divine Baptism, according to Eusebius , and also according to Socrates and Sozomen; and when he had been deemed worthy of the Holy Mysteries, he reposed in 337, on May 21 or 22, the day of Pentecost, having lived sixty-five years, of which he ruled for thirtyone years. His remains were transferred to Constantinople and were deposed in the Church of the Holy Apostles, which had been built by him . As for his holy mother Helen, after her son had made the Faith of Christ triumphant throughout the Roman Empire, she undertook a journey to Jerusalem and found the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified (see Sept. 13 and 14). After this, Saint Helen, in her zeal to glorify Christ, erected churches in Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, in Bethlehem at the cave where our Saviour was born, another on the Mount of Olives whence He ascended into Heaven, and many others throughout the Holy Land, Cyprus, and elsewhere. She was proclaimed Augusta, her image was stamped upon golden coins, and two cities were named Helenopolis after her in Bithynia and in Palestine. Having been thus glorified for her piety, she departed to the Lord being about eighty years of age.
