he times and people have changed, but the purpose hasn’t. Assistance League of Long Beach was formed to help those in need in our local community, and over the 75 years of its history, that goal has not changed. In 1940, emulating the efforts of Mrs. Hancock Banning (Anne) who founded Assistance League of Southern California in 1923, a group of 50 women in the city formed a local chapter of Assistance League. These women, the social elite of Long Beach, had as their motto “All for Service and Service for All.” Mrs. Melvin Campbell (Winifred) was the group’s first president. During their inaugural year, members volunteered for the Red Cross, made contributions to Long Beach Day Nursery, the Press Telegram’s Holiday Cheer Fund and aided other “welfare and character building groups.” They raised funds through rummage sales, writing and selling a cookbook, and running a Tea Room. The first year’s operating budget was $1,928.

YEARS
We have grown since those early years. Assistance League of Long Beach is one of 122 national chapters and is recognized as having the largest number of members (more than 900 in FY 2014) with ten philanthropic programs. We are one of the largest nonprofits in Long Beach, with an operating budget of just over $2 million. Our membership is now a diverse group, ranging in age from high school students to retired women in their eighties and nineties. Several of us are third generation members, proud to be maintaining the tradition of service to all. In many ways, it’s not my mother’s Assistance League, but in the ways that really count, it is.

Chapter members, together with auxiliary members, are ready and able to provide needed services in the Long Beach community. Assistance League of Long Beach offers many opportunities for its volunteer members to use their talents in managing our philanthropic programs and volunteering for fundraising, member recruitment, office management, and marketing. Las Hermanas Auxiliary was founded 1961. In addition to administering the Assault Survivors Kits® program, its members assist chapter and other auxiliaries in various philanthropic programs and fundraising activities.
CAMEO Professional Auxiliary, founded in 1987, has 100 members. CAMEO’s members provide guidance to high school students and Long Beach City College re-entry women through its mentoring program. Each spring CAMEO has a fashion show and luncheon to provide funding for the program. Assisteens® Auxiliary was chartered in 1959. Today this auxiliary, with its 110 high school age women and men, is dedicated to developing volunteerism and leadership skills in young people. Assisteens members have contributed more than 3,500 hours of community service this past year. In addition to planning and administering their own philanthropic programs, Adopt-A-Family, AdoptA-Pet, Operation Shoebox and Senior Prom, they also support the Thrift & Vintage Shop, ALa Carte and Operation School Bell.
Rick Rackers Auxiliary, chartered in 1942, started Operation School Bell® in Long Beach in 1974. When the mandatory school uniform policy began in 1995, the auxiliary stepped up to provide uniforms for students in need. Each year Rick Rackers honors an outstanding woman at its “Woman of the Year” luncheon, and Long Beach City College nursing students benefit from its Winifred Campbell Nursing Scholarship Fund.

The Orthodontic Program began in 1969 with 42 young patients. Currently, the Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation Orthodontic Center in our Philanthropic Center cares for more than 1,000 patients each year. It is the only organization in the community providing low cost, high quality orthodontic care to students in the Long Beach Unified School District. Patients are referred to the program by dentists, orthodontists, school nurses, satisfied patients and their families. Treatment typically lasts for 28 months. Fees are set on a sliding scale based on family income with the difference made up by the generosity of grant funders and individual donors.

“The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is a true community partnership where many agencies come together to care for the various needs of the sexual assault victim – whether child, adult, male or female. One such basic need is clothing – no longer does the sexual assault victim need to leave the hospital partially clothed but in a full set of clothes donated by Las Hermanas. Victims continue to be amazed that they are given new clothing and not used clothing from a thrift store!!”

Assault Survivor Kits® In 1994 Las Hermanas Auxiliary answered the need for help in the community. Las Hermanas volunteers began working with S.A.R.T. and Forensic Nurse specialists by providing kits that contain “wear home” clothes to adult and child survivors of sexual assault when their clothing is kept as evidence. This small gesture gives the survivor a sense of dignity. This past year 488 kits containing clothes and hygiene items were supplied.

In 1981 volunteer puppeteers from Assistance League of Long Beach began educating students about social and personal issues. The program has grown over the years. Puppet shows were seen by over 4,500 students and adults this year. The almost life-size puppets interface with the audience, answering questions and talking about feelings. “Bullying” and “Alternatives to Violence” are popular programs, but other programs dealing with drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, mental and physical disabilities, divorce and the problems of aging, are available.

ALa Carte
“The ALa Carte program plays an instrumental role at Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital Long Beach by helping children and families adjust to and cope better during the most traumatic time in a child’s life. The activities provided by the Assistance League of Long Beach volunteers are wonderful and just what the doctor ordered for our patients because they help to distract them from the hospital environment. We are so grateful for countless volunteer hours through the ALa Carte program and look forward to an ongoing partnership that benefits the pediatric patients and their families.”

In 1970 ALa Carte volunteers first wheeled their cart from room to room in the children’s wing of Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Today the cart still goes from room to room, but now it’s in Miller Children’s and Women’s’ Hospital Long Beach. The cart is loaded with crafts for young patients to enjoy, offering a diversion from hospital routine. In addition to crafts, volunteers bring games, books and conversation. More than 3,000 children are entertained each year with fun activities provided by our volunteers. Parents are grateful, as they too need a break.

ARS E Y
Naomi Blackmore: As a retired principal in the Long Beach Unified School District, I was interested in giving back to my community. CAMEO Professional Auxiliary of Assistance League of Long Beach had a unique meeting schedule. It provided me the opportunity to work with other women to mentor local youth and Long Beach City College reentry women to prepare them for higher education and the world of work. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this organization and to help make a difference for our students.
Melva Miller: My husband and I moved to Long Beach in 1955 to start our teaching careers. I joined Rick Rackers Auxiliary in 1960 and in 1968 became a chapter member. I started with the Rick Rackers Auxiliary Girl’s Clubs and have participated in almost all of our philanthropic programs. Each of the programs has made such a difference in our community and I can’t imagine what Long Beach would be without Assistance League.
Blair Carty: My friends from Rick Rackers Auxiliary invited me to join and I feel that it is very important that we help our community. Rick Rackers are a fun group of women who care about helping all kids in Long Beach and treating them like we treat our own kids. I love watching the kids we serve through Operation School Bell and the big smiles on their faces when they receive their backpack filled with new school uniforms.
Diane Reed: It means the world to me to be associated with such a wonderful well run organization and I am very proud to be a member of Las Hermanas Auxiliary of Assistance League. There are so many opportunities to serve and make a difference to families in Long Beach. I have helped with fundraising, the Howard and Asian Art Collection, and now I am becoming a puppeteer with The Kids on the Block.
Hilda Sanchez: I love the local nature of Assistance League. I’m a firm believer that charity begins at home and it warms my heart to know that the people we help are the people who live right here in Long Beach. They are the kids I see as I drive by the school on my way to work, they’re in line with me at the grocery store, and they’re standing next to me at the Christmas Parade. They are real people with real needs and they live here. And to think that I’m contributing to my community while having fun with my Assistance League friends, well that’s definitely a win-win.

Membership Since 1940, Assistance League has grown to nearly 950 members. Membership appeals to a diverse group of women for many reasons. Our ten philanthropic programs provide a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. From measuring children for uniforms to conducting financial screening for the Orthodontic Center to helping hospitalized children with bedside crafts, there is a program for every interest. Additionally, members with skills in finance, fund development, human resources, and marketing find uses for their talents. This organization runs on volunteer power, and members take great pride in it. The fact that we have nearly 80 members who have been volunteering with the organization for 40 years or more is testimony to the bonds they have formed!

Operation School Bell In 1974 Rick Rackers took on the challenge of supplying the neediest children in LBUSD with school appropriate clothes. After the school district mandated uniforms for elementary school students in 1995, once again Rick Rackers accepted the challenge, providing uniforms to children in need. In 20132014 more than 10,000 students in grades K-12 received uniforms. The program is supported through the help of hundreds of donors, corporate partners and their employee teams, foundations and community volunteers. School teachers and administrators credit Operation School Bell for helping to provide a safe learning environment that contributes to scholastic success for the students.

ARS E Y
Assistance League of Long Beach has operated a thrift store since 1949. We were originally located downtown on Locust Avenue, but we are now on Fourth Street, Long Beach’s popular “Retro Row.” Not only is the store a source of gently worn clothing, housewares, toys, books and decorative items for families in need, but it’s a mecca for shoppers from all over Southern California looking for jewelry, vintage clothing and antiques. In addition to serving the needs of its clientele, the Thrift & Vintage Shop’s revenue provides operating expenses for Assistance League of Long Beach so that 100% of our fundraising efforts support our philanthropic programs.

Started in 2013, Vocational Training is our newest philanthropic program. Students who are part of the Adult Community Transition Program at CSULB work at the Thrift & Vintage Shop to learn work and social skills and to develop self-reliance to help them grow from dependence to independence.

From the very beginning of Assistance League of Long Beach in 1940, members realized that fundraising was crucial to the success of their mission of “All for Service and Service for All.” In those early years, cook books were written and sold; gum ball machines were placed throughout the city; seasonal wreaths were sold; and there was even a weekend tea room where members prepared and served luncheons to the public. Today, we raise funds in a variety of ways: special events, our Thrift & Vintage Shop, grants, and donations. Our major special events are the CAMEO Fashion Show in the spring, the Holiday Boutique, and “A Bewitching Soiree” at Halloween, a magical evening of costumed guests, games of chance and silent and live auctions.
