ASIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE FOR DEANS AND DIRECTORS 2016

WELCOME Welcome to Nagoya and our ninth Annual Asia Pacific Deans and Directors Conference! This is the first Conference AMBA has ever held in Japan during our 49 years of existence and we are both grateful and honoured to be hosted by The NUCB Graduate School – not only one of Japan’s finest Business Schools, but also a school which has recently invested so impressively in its upgraded facilities. We are meeting together at a fascinating time, in terms of the evolution of MBA and Masters Programmes, operating in complex market conditions of both opportunity and uncertainty, which characterise many of the world’s major Business School economies. I am delighted to welcome delegates and speakers from ten different countries – Australia, Canada, China, France, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Sweden and the United Kingdom – and four different Continents. AMBA Conferences always aim to strike the best balance between local relevance and broader global perspectives and we certainly have an outstanding, rich and varied mix of experience, with delegates from six of the world’s largest seven economies here with us in Nagoya. Some of the key issues we will be debating over the next three days include: • How will the Business School evolve over the next ten years? • How can career development planning be better incorporated within MBA programmes? • How can entrepreneurship and innovation be more effectively incorporated in curricula? • How can digital content be better leveraged in MBA curricula? • What are the latest trends in MBA recruitment? • What is the optimum mix of research output as the publishing landscape changes? • What are the latest innovation trends in leading Japanese organisations? We have included a tour of the Toyota factory in our Conference programme, since we increasingly want to champion best business practices in technology and innovation. The Toyota factory is not only regarded as one of the world’s most impressive car manufacturing plants, but one of the world’s most impressive factories in any industry. I would like to thank you all for your outstanding support for AMBA, during what has been another year of exciting growth. We now accredit 245 Schools in over 70 countries and student and graduate membership has quadrupled in just 2 years to over 20,000. These achievements put AMBA in its strongest ever position, on the eve of our 50th Anniversary year in 2017. We have designated 2017 ‘The Year of the MBA’ – and we look forward to sharing with you some of our exciting ideas and events planned for 2017 over the next 3 days.

Andrew Main Wilson, Chief Executive, AMBA

SESSION 5

Evolution of the Business School

Leveraging Digital Content for Student Success in your Department

In this session one of AMBA's most senior international advisors will look at the origins of the Business School, how it developed into the range of institutions that we see around the world today, and what the future may hold.

Speaker

The implementation of a digital textbook programme can be a daunting process for colleges and universities. This is sometimes aggravated by the fact that certain departments on campus are ready for the digital transformation, whilst others are not. During this session, we will discuss how smaller groups within an institution can successfully transition to digital content for both oncampus and distance learners in an environment where traditional texts have been dominant.

Emeritus Professor Andrew Lock, Chairman of the International Accreditation Advisory Board and Trustee Director, International Management Board, AMBA

Speaker

SESSION 2 Career Development on an MBA Programme This session will look at how Business Schools are offering their students career development in both a practical and theoretical way. Are today’s graduates being taught the necessary skills to succeed in today’s corporate world.

Speaker Craig Saphin, Executive Director, Craig Saphin Consulting

SESSION 3 Entrepreneurship Education and Innovation Ecosystem Since the incorporation of national universities took place in 2004, the Japanese universities have been evolving to be more innovation driven. Since the start of the 21st century, Chinese universities have also moved into a more innovation-driven stage of development, especially over the last five years. Only a few universities have created entrepreneurship education programmes as part of an “innovation ecosystem” based on academic entrepreneurship. Professor Kagami will talk about what the University of Tokyo has been trying to do during the last decade about its innovation ecosystem, especially for entrepreneurship education. Additionally, Professor Wang will explore entrepreneurship education in the Chinese market, looking at innovative teaching models, venture practice modules and innovation ecosystem development for MBA and business programmes focusing on entrepreneurship competence development.

Speakers Dr Shigeo Kagami, Professor, General Manager – Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Division of University Corporate Relations, The University of Tokyo Professor Zhongming Wang, International Advisor for China, AMBA, Zhejiang University

SESSION 4 AMBA Activity Update and Strategy, Global and Regional Market Trends AMBA, as the world’s only MBA-specific membership and accreditation organisation, is perfectly placed to offer a unique view on global MBA markets, key current and future MBA and business education trends.

Speaker Andrew Main Wilson, Chief Executive, AMBA

Kevin Hoyle, Senior Account Executive, VitalSource

SESSION 6 Beyond the Limit Leadership is about pursuing what you believe right, what you believe better, and what you believe best. Under your management, you are expected to make correct judgements and implement decisions in the best manner. The question is what makes your decision correct, does confidence play a large part in this decision? Do you believe in your career, management style, decision, or leadership? Using research, Fujiyo will address why people tend to put limitations on themselves, for example; why are women less likely to apply for a role they are equipped to do vs men who are happy to apply even if they do not meet job requirements. In this session we hope to understand how we can encourage and develop people with the skills needed to be great leaders.

Speaker Fujiyo Ishiguro, President and CEO, Netyear Group Corporation

SESSION 7 Recruiting Students from Asia, What You Need to Know Learn all about GRE test takers from Asia including their undergraduate fields of study, demographics, GRE test performance, graduate study interests and preferences. Gain more knowledge about this vibrant applicant pipeline, that you can then leverage in your recruiting strategies and marketing plans to attract more applicants from Asia who may be a good fit for your programme(s). You will also learn about GRE Programme services that institutions can use to obtain this data on their own and develop customised strategies and plans.

Speaker Jay Kang, Academic Relations Manager, Asia, Educational Testing Service (ETS)

Management in an Ever Changing Environment

Are companies hiring Global MBA candidates, executive MBA’s, part-time MBA’s, or are they more inclined towards an industry specific MBA? How can MBA programmes create effective partnerships with companies to give students an understanding of what’s changing in the economy and the market? In this session leading corporates will give their views on what the world of work needs from MBA graduates and give insight into how Business Schools can make their students more employable.
