ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Arts Education Program operates full-time with classes scheduled Monday through Saturday, excluding holidays. Classes are offered weekdays from 9:00 am – 9:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. POLYNESIAN DANCE These classes are for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Students will learn to tell stories through movement and dance. They will learn basic skills of Polynesian Dance including basic footwork, hip motion, and traditional hand movements within a choreographed dance routine. INTRODUCTION TO MODERN DANCE TECHNIQUES This class is an introduction to modern dance and how it emphasizes the use of the floor for centering and grounding oneself in creative movement. It includes basic modern dance technique, combinations, floor and barre exercises, moving across the floor, musicality, and rhythm. Students will learn how this form of dance can increase flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, mind/body awareness, and relieve stress. CUBAN SALSA AND RUEDA Cuban-style Salsa and its group form Rueda de Casino are becoming more and more popular throughout the United States and the rest of the world. In the first class we will cover the fundamental steps, turns, and movements of Cuban Salsa, and in the second class we’ll build on this foundation to cover more intricate patterns. Level 1 is geared towards new students who have never taken this class before.

music MUSIC TOGETHER® Music Together® recognizes that all children are musical, and that every child needs a stimulating, supportive music environment to achieve basic competence in the wonderful human capacity of music making. Adults and children come together for 45 minutes to sing songs, experience rhythm chants, dance and move to music, play instruments, make up silly rhymes for songs and experience a wide range of rhythmic and melodic variety. This live music making takes place in a fun, playful, non-performance oriented and age-appropriate setting, with adults and the teacher acting as encouraging role models. Classes are led by a registered Music Together® teacher. Class meets for 10 weeks. RHYTHM KIDS K-2 New! Rhythm Kids K-2 is an exciting music, movement, and drumming class for children in Kindergarten through second grade. Children integrate and assimilate rhythm into their lives, as they learn multicultural drumming patterns, develop new repertoire on various percussion instruments, explore movement and dance while singing songs, play games based on music and drumming, and have fun with a host of rhythm activities. Rhythm Kids follows through on the Music Together® vision to help children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth through age 8. As part of the Rhythm Kids experience, children and their grownups can enjoy drumming play and practice sessions at home with the help of online play-along videos featuring Rhythm Kids creator Tom Foote. Class Tuition includes: 10 weekly, 45-minute classes; Animal Collection Songbook and CDs; access to online video tutorials and play-along. PRIVATE DRUM SET LESSONS
These lessons are designed for the novice as well as the more-advanced player. The student starts by learning the parts of the guitar, how to tune, and basic hand shapes. Next comes basic music reading, chord instruction, and an introduction to the primary scales. Students will also gain an understanding of the common chords in genres such as Latin, blues, R&B, jazz, and rock.
Beginning through intermediate-level students will explore the skills and techniques necessary to be well-rounded and accomplished drummers. Students will learn rudimentary techniques, stick control, syncopated rhythms, various time signatures, solid foundations of rock, jazz, and Latin styles, double-bass, triple strokes, advanced rudiments, soloing, tuning, and drum kit maintenance.

Students will be challenged to learn proper vocal technique and production, improve their range, develop good diction habits, and increase their self-confidence. This class allows beginning to advanced students to reach to their fullest potential on the trumpet while expanding their appreciation for music. PRINTMAKING FOR ADULTS Español Join us as we learn relief printmaking techniques, how to transfer an image or drawing onto a plate or matrix, and how to carve and print with or without a printing press. Each session will cover a different printmaking technique, and allow each student ample time to complete one to three works of art. Sessions will start with an overview of basic printing processes, a brief history of printmaking, a review of the formal elements of design, how to incorporate these elements into our final images. OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTING Introduction – Explore this exciting introductory class in oil and acrylic painting with local artist Vince Walsh. Over 7 weeks, students will follow a step-by-step guide to painting that covers such techniques as brush stroke, color theory, scale, and composition. Even the most tentative amateur will develop confidence and skills. Shared painting materials will be provided in class, and students may bring their own painting supplies. PHOTOGRAPHY Beginning – This class will explore the creative controls on the modern digital camera. Through both classroom instruction and field exploration of the Grand, students will learn the basics of working with an adjustable camera, including f-stops, shutter speeds, “ISO” speed, lens, focus, and focal length. Class meets once a week for 5 weeks. Intermediate – This class picks up where Beginning Digital Photography leaves off. Students will go far beyond the basic pointing and shooting of a digital camera (single-lens reflex, “DSLR,” models preferred). Through classroom discussions and working with the camera in locations around the Grand, students will explore more complex digital photography techniques. Advanced – Learn how to become a professional photographer in this advanced course. The instructor will assist students with their specific questions and work on issues they are facing with their photography skills. This will be a hands-on focused 4-week session. We will begin each 4 hour session with quick gesture, work our way into 5, 10, and 20 minute drawings, and end each session with a long-format pose. The models will take scheduled breaks between poses. Each workshop will be hosted by an active Tracy Art League member or special guest, who will be responsible for coordinating activities and answering questions. There will be no active instruction as these workshops are presented as an open studio. Instructor: Tracy Art League Location: Varies Notes: Easels and drawing boards will be provided. fused glass FUSED GLASS JEWELRY FOR BEGINNERS This course was designed for beginners in mind. If you’ve been curious about glass techniques, this is a great place to begin. You will learn multiple techniques for using fusible glass. Tools will be provided and you will learn the basic skills for cutting and designing glass pendants and earrings. Wouldn’t it be fun to eat sushi using your very own custom-made plate set? Come design a three piece setting including a 10” x 6” dish, 3” x 5” dipping bowl, and matching chop-stick holder. This is a two week class. Projects will be available within two-three weeks after the last day of class. GLASS CRACKLE BOWL
PERFECT PLATES OF GLASS
This class is for beginners and experienced glass fusers alike. We will be creating bowls that appear to have a cracked or crackle design, much like the way sand looks as you press on it. The finished project will be roughly 8-9” in diameter. Class includes step by step instruction, glass, tools, firings and studio time!

Do you love to build? Do you love to bake? Then hand building is for you. This project based class will teach you valuable art skills and leave you with a product you can be proud of. Projects featured this semester include wax resist, pierced designs, slip transfer, and graffito.
Young children will exercise their fine motor skills and creative potential in this class full of short projects perfect for their attention span. SEASONAL POTTERY PAINTING WORKSHOPS
Any child who loves play dough will delight in this class. Sign your children up for this class and watch their smiles as they show you their work. Students will learn the basics of hand-building with clay through these short-term project-based classes. Techniques covered this semester will include Egyptian, Greek, Western African, Chinese, Korean, English, Turkish, and Mexican.
Come join us for an evening of fun as we paint holiday themed ceramics! Hearts will flutter for our heart-shaped Valentine’s items, including your choice of a vase, a plate, and a trinket box. Then hop on down to celebrate Spring by painting your very own eggs and basket for the Easter Bunny.

WHEEL THROWN POTTERY FOR TEENS AND ADULTS Throwing on a potter’s wheel is one of the most satisfying creative experiences. If you have ever wanted to create your own dinnerware or form a vase for your favorite flowers, then come take this class. We will start each session with a demonstration, and then follow it up with lots of one-on-one instruction. WHEEL THROWN POTTERY FOR KIDS Whether your child has never touched clay before or has been throwing vessels since they were five, this class is perfect for them if they love to create with their hands. q&a How do I register for a class?
To register for a class in person or by fax, complete the registration form located on page 34. Make sure to include your name, contact phone number, and the class number that corresponds to the class in which you wish to enroll. Bring the completed form to the Grand Theatre, Patron Services, located at 715 Central Avenue in Historic Downtown Tracy. Registration forms can be faxed to (209) 831-6271 or emailed to
[email protected]. Online registration is available at www.tracyartsandrec.com. All fees must be paid at the time of registration.
What if a class is full?
If you attempt to register for a class and find that it is full, you may ask Patron Services Staff to place your or your child’s name on a waiting list. If a space does become available in the class, Patron Services Staff will contact the waiting list candidates in order of time on the list.
What is a resident discount and cost fee?
If your address has five digits or more, your home may still be outside of Tracy city limits. It is possible to live in one of three Tracy zip codes and still not live within the Tracy city limits. Families residing inside the city limits receive the Resident Discount. All others pay the non-residents fee. Call Patron Services if you are unsure.

Is financial assistance available?
Yes, financial assistance is available to qualified applicants. Participants may request a financial aid application from Patron Services Staff and return it with the required forms of income verification. Applications must be accompanied by a registration form.
Is late registration available?
If space permits, class registration will be open for up to one week after the first day of class. After the first week of instruction, registration will be closed. Students are not allowed to register halfway through the class session, or for a fraction of the class.
Can I drop in the day of class to sign up?
Guests may not drop in to a class without having officially registered. In order to participate in a class, you must be enrolled. Guests may visit Patron Services at the Grand Monday through Thursday, 8 am – 6 pm or Friday 8 am–5 pm to register. Limited registration services are available on Saturdays through Arts Education staff. If a student registers the day of the class, they are advised to bring their receipt. Instructors cannot accept payments. All financial transactions and registrations take place through Patron Services at the Grand, online at www.tracyartsandrec.com or through Arts Education staff.
What if I withdraw from a class?
To withdraw from a class and obtain a full refund, you must complete the “Class Withdrawal Form” at least five business days prior to the start of class. If you decide within the first week of class that you are not satisfied, you may withdraw and receive a prorated refund or credit. All withdrawals or transfers will be charged a non-refundable $5 transaction fee. These fees do not apply to withdrawals made on www.tracyartsandrec.com. Please allow 2 – 3 weeks to process a withdrawal and/or refund.
What happens if the class does not meet the minimum student enrollment?
If a class does not meet the minimum student enrollment, staff or the instructor may cancel the class. Students will be notified of the cancellation in advance, and issued a full refund or class credit and will not be charged a transaction or refund fee.
What if I miss a day in class?
If you miss a day of class, you will not receive a make-up session or a refund for the day you missed. By registering for a class, you assume the responsibility of attending class during the times and dates scheduled. The Grand Theatre Center for the Arts will only issue a make-up day or a prorated refund for classes canceled by staff or instructors. If a class is canceled by the instructor, or an unforeseen circumstance prevents the class from taking place, the student will be notified.
Are art materials provided in classes?
The Grand Theatre Center for the Arts does provide shared art supplies and equipment for most visual arts classes. In some cases instructors may request that students purchase specific materials outside of class. See class descriptions for more details.
Where is the nearest available parking?
Free parking is available on Central Avenue and 7th Street, as well as in nearby lots on 6th Street in Historic Downtown Tracy. Please observe City-posted signs to avoid parking tickets.
Are parents allowed to observe classes?
We encourage parents to wait outside the classroom to prevent overcrowding and distractions. Parents may relax in our lobbies or loggia while waiting. There are also windows on our classroom doors where parents can temporarily monitor their children at any time. In the event you feel you need to accompany your child in class, please call (209) 831-6858.
Are food or drinks allowed in classrooms?
Food, drinks, candy and gum are not allowed in the classrooms with the exception of bottled water. Instructors will ask students to dispose of food, drinks, candy or gum if taken into the class.
