Art Institute Study Leader An artist and art historian, Laura Mueller has lectured and taught for the Art Institute’s Department of Museum Education since 1987. She has a BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute and an MA from the University of Chicago in comparative literature, with a focus on interdisciplinary studies in art and literature as well as French and Italian literature. Laura has taught courses in art history, studio art, and literature. For the Member Sketch program at the museum, she has developed and taught a host of new classes, including composition and color. She has lectured on such varied topics as Byzantine art, Matisse, Cy Twombly, Paris in the ’20s and ’30s, and the sculptures of Brancusi and Puryear. Laura has served as a popular study leader on Art Institute member travel programs to destinations including France, Italy, Croatia, Germany, Holland, and Belgium.

ITINERARY Saturday, June 3 Arrivals in Paris and Metz Arrive on independent flights at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Board a private motor coach and drive two hours north to Lille. Check in at the luxurious five-star Hotel Hermitage Gantois. Enjoy a two-hour walking tour with a local guide in the historic district of Lille. Gather for a welcome reception featuring cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres in one of the hotel’s elegant reception rooms. Hotel Hermitage Gantois, Lille (R)

Sunday, June 4 Lille and Roubaix Start the day with a visit to the Lille Métropole Museum of Modern Contemporary and Outsider Art (LaM), which reopened to the public in September 2010 after a four-year face-lift. Continue to the Musée La Piscine (Pool Museum), in the nearby city of Roubaix, and explore its textiles, sculptures, and paintings in the unique Art Deco setting of a former public swimming pool. Enjoy a light lunch at the Pool Museum’s casual restaurant, and browse through its gift shop. Gain special access to the prestigious National Studio of Contemporary Arts, Le Fresnoy, for a guided tour of its various studios and renovated building designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi. Monday, June 5 Lens Travel to the former industrial center of Lens, passing the remarkable landscapes of the Nord-Pas de Calais mining basin, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Enjoy an in-depth tour with one of the Louvre-Lens museum’s docents and view pieces from the museum’s collection, which spans 75,000 square feet of galleries and storage areas. Discover new aromas and flavors at the L’Atelier Marc Meurin, run by chef Marc Meurin, whose restaurant Le Château de Beaulieu in Pas-de-Calais has earned two Michelin stars. Tuesday, June 6 Reims and Metz Depart Lille and drive eastward to Reims, historical location for the coronation of French kings. Visit both of the city’s coronation churches: the Notre-Dame de Reims and the delicate abbey of St. Remi, dating back to the 6th century. Enjoy lunch at a traditional brasserie in Reims. Then, indulge in a tasting and guided tour at one of the city’s most prestigious champagne houses. Continue to Metz and check in at our centrally located hotel. This evening, gather with the group for a Dutch-treat dinner at the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Magasin aux Vivres. Hotel La Citadelle, Metz (B, L)

Wednesday, June 7 Metz Start the day with a visit to the stunning Centre Pompidou-Metz, designed by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines, which opened in 2010. Admire the fine modern and contemporary artworks on display and finish the visit with lunch at the Centre Pompidou’s restaurant. This afternoon, discover the “Garden City” of Metz on a guided walking tour, stopping at the Gothic cathedral of Saint Etienne, which contains the world’s largest expanse of stained glass windows, designed by Marc Chagall and other prominent artists. Thursday, June 8 Nancy Drive to the cosmopolitan capital of the French region of Lorraine, Nancy. Embark on a walking tour and admire the city’s luxurious ensemble of 18th-century buildings and its Art Nouveau masterpieces. Enter the Museum of Fine Arts, created in 1793 and one of the oldest museums in France, and view its spectacular permanent collections and high-quality temporary exhibitions. After a light lunch of traditional French fare, continue to the Ecole de Nancy Museum, the only museum in France dedicated to the Art Nouveau movement, founded in 1901 by several notable artists including Émile Gallé, Victor Prouvé, and Eugène Vallin. Take a guided tour through the garden townhouse built by Eugene Corbin, an early patron of the School of Nancy, and admire original works of art by local Art Nouveau glassmakers and artisans. Friday, June 9 Metz and Paris After breakfast, depart Metz by private motor coach for Paris. Upon arrival, take a special guided tour of the Centre Pompidou, mother institution of the new museum visited in Metz. Learn about Renzo Piano’s groundbreaking 1977 building, and tour the highlights of the collection. Finish the visit with lunch at the museum’s panoramic Frenchfusion restaurant, Le Georges. This afternoon, visit the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, designed by architect Jean Nouvel in 1994. At once a creative space for artists and a place where art and the general public can coexist, the foundation is dedicated to promoting and raising public awareness of contemporary art. Saturday, June 10 Paris Begin with an extensive tour of the Louis Vuitton Foundation, designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 2014. The foundation houses an impressive contemporary art collection with regularly changing temporary exhibitions. If possible, take a behind-the-scenes tour of the grand auction house at the Hotel Drouot. Lunch and the afternoon are free. ACTIVITY LEVEL

This tour involves moderate-to-active walking tours through cities and rural settings, including uneven paths as well as stairs. Portions of this program are not handicap accessible. Please call the Department of Member Travel at (312) 443-3115 for more information.

DEPOSIT AND FINAL PAYMENT

A deposit of $1,000 per paying participant is required to guarantee participation in the program. This deposit may be paid by check or by Visa or MasterCard. Final payment will be invoiced and is due on February 22, 2017 by check only to International Seminar Design, Inc. Registrants will be accepted beyond this date on a space-available basis with payment in full by check only.

CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS

All cancellations must be received in writing by ISDI and are subject to a nonrefundable administrative fee of $500 per person. Written cancellation received by ISDI on or before February 22, 2017: full refund minus $500 per person administrative fee. Written cancellation received by ISDI between February 23 and April 18, 2017: 50 percent of tour cost per person. Cancellations received on or after April 19, 2017: no refund. After the tour has commenced, it is not possible to issue any refunds. No refunds for any unused portion of the tour, including, but not limited to, occasional missed meals or any missed sightseeing tours. Costs for promotion, staff, and other group expenses are not refundable. In the case of cancellation, substitutions are not accepted. The tour cost is nontransferable. If ISDI or the Art Institute of Chicago cancels the tour, active registrants will receive a full refund of all tour payments. A package of cancellation, baggage, and medical insurance is strongly recommended.

All tour participants are strongly encouraged to purchase travel insurance, regardless of present good health. Should one need to cancel participation in this travel program, trip cancellation insurance may be the only source of reimbursement. ISDI must strictly abide by the cancellation terms outlined above. Purchasing travel insurance is the best way to protect your financial investment in the trip against unexpected complications. A travel insurance brochure will be sent upon receipt of registration and deposit.

ISDI, the Art Institute of Chicago, and/ or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error, or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay, or irregularity which may be caused by any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus, or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of the tour. ISDI and the Art Institute of Chicago reserve the right to cancel any tour prior to departure for any reason, including insufficient number of participants, as well as the right to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the tour at any time. If bookings fall below the minimum required, passengers will be advised of additional costs or itinerary alterations before departure date.
