Art I Sketchbook Assignments Week 1 - Mandalas The psychoanalyst Carl Jung saw the mandala as "a representation of the unconscious self," The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated to mean "circle," Medium: Any drawing medium; suggested colored pencil, marker, ink or pencil (something that won’t smudge) Format: At least 7 inch circle. Subject: A personal mandala. The design should reflect who you are. It can contain objects or it may be abstract. Writing: Please include a 3-5 sentence explanation of your mandala and how it relates to you. Traditionally: Mandalas have 4 “gates” (cardinal points: N, E, S & W) please include an elements that indicates these. In addition 4 “rings” were used; if this works into your design great, but not required. The four outer circles: the purifying fire of wisdom, the vajra circle (strength and fearfulness), the circle with the eight tombs, the lotus circle (devotion)." Finally traditionally radial balance was achieved - strive for this! Focus: this drawing is a microcosm of your world. What is important to you, what makes you who you are... Mandala Project by: Stephen Beam The Mandala is not my usual way of expressing myself but I had fun making this one. I was trying to create a high energy image that suggests the excitement of our spiritual journey home to the heart of God!
