Arriving in Springfield, Illinois, USA

ISPEL orientation is on Friday, June 10 at 10 AM. Classes begin on Monday, June 13 and end Friday, August 5, 2011. You may wish to arrive a few days before classes begin so that you can get settled. Please notify Dana Atwell, ESL Coordinator, of your travel plans so that she can arrange for someone to meet you at the Springfield airport, train station, or bus station and transport you to our campus. You will be provided transportation to our campus and assistance in checking into your residence. Please note that we are only able to provide transportation to students arriving at the Springfield Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport or Springfield Amtrak or Greyhound stations. Even if you have friends or relatives who plan to meet you and bring you to our campus, please make us aware of your plans. Travel International flights do not fly directly to Springfield, IL. Chicago and St. Louis are the two closest international airports. From either one, you can transfer to Springfield. 1. You may fly to:

Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport 1200 Capital Airport Dr Springfield, IL 62707

2. You may take an Amtrak train (http://amtrak.com) 3. You may take a Greyhound bus (http://www.greyhound.com/home/) You do not want to take a taxicab from Chicago or St. Louis because it will cost several hundred dollars. St. Louis is a 90-minute drive. Chicago is a 3-hour drive. A flight from either St. Louis or Chicago is under 1-hour.

We look forward to your arrival in Springfield! Please contact us with any questions.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO ISPEL FROM ANOTHER U.S. INSTITUTION SUMMER 2011

How Do I Stay in Status? In order for us to issue an I-20, your current institution must release your SEVIS record to us. You should ask your International Admissions or Student Services office to release your SEVIS record to the University of Illinois at Springfield, School Code CHI214F06390000. They will need to see your acceptance letter to ISPEL. The release date should be the last day of your current program. Please let us know this date so that we can promptly create an I-20 for you. We will send your I-20 to the address on file with us. You do not need this document until you arrive at ISPEL unless you plan to leave the country between programs. Contact our office if you plan to leave the country before coming to ISPEL. How Can I Get Housing? Housing arrangements should be made before you come to ISPEL. Complete the online ISPEL Housing form (http://www.uis.edu/esl/curriculum/documents/HousingApplication.pdf). It is suggested that ISPEL students live on campus. Individuals may live in shared apartments with private bedrooms, a bathroom and kitchen. Students with families may choose to live in on-campus family housing. The rates vary depending upon students’ needs. ISPEL provides linens and kitchen items for students living on campus during the summer only. It is important that you send your $500 deposit in a timely manner to ISPEL because it is also used to pay a housing deposit. Students may decide to live with friends or relatives in the Springfield area. Those students still pay a $500 deposit. When Can I Arrive in Springfield and What Do I Need to Bring With Me? You should have the immigration documents that you used to enter the country originally. You will bring your passport, visa, I94 card, and ISPEL I20 to the ESL Office on the first day of the program. Please note that under immigration regulations, you may arrive in Springfield up to five (5) months from your release date at your current institution to the start date of ISPEL. Do I Need Immunizations or Health Records? Illinois requires all college students to be immunized against certain vaccine-preventable diseases, listed on the enclosed Immunization Requirements handout. You can show that you have had some or all of these immunizations on the enclosed Immunization Form included in your packet. If you already submitted immunization records to your current institution, you may submit those instead. Alternatively, you may have your family doctor complete, sign and stamp the form. This form CANNOT be completed after you have arrived. You may fax or bring this form with you rather than send it. NOTE: Provide a certified English translation if immunization records are not in English. If you are under the age of 18, this form must also be signed by a Parent or Guardian. All international students must have a tuberculosis test at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The tuberculosis (“TB”) test is done at the UIS Health Services Center for a $10 charge. If you have had a TB test done at your current institution, you may submit the results to UIS.

This proof must be in English. Students will then file a Petition for Exemption from Student Health Insurance and submit both the proof and the petition to the Human Resources Office. For more information about student health insurance and to download a petition, visit http://www.uis.edu/humanresources/studentinsurance/documents/exemption_form.pdf. If students do not bring proof of adequate insurance at the time of registration, they will be charged for University of Illinois at Springfield student health insurance. How Do I Get to Springfield, Illinois? See the enclosed Arriving in Springfield, Illinois handout.

How Do I Get From Springfield Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport to the UIS Campus? If you have been treated for Tuberculosis, please bring medical records translated into English. If diagnosed as a known positive reactor to tuberculosis, documentation is required. All records not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation. Acceptable medical exemptions are pregnancy, suspected pregnancy, allergies to vaccine, immunosuppression or certain severe illnesses, and must include physician’s letter of explanation with the date exemption ends and the diagnosis. For all students who request exemption on religious grounds: State law permits exemption from immunization for those who object to immunizations on religious grounds. General philosophical or moral objection to immunization is not sufficient for an exemption on religious grounds. Additional information may be required by UIS at a later date. Statement of student: Please state the basis of your objections:

Meningococcal meningitis is an infection of the brain and its covering layers. It may cause death or permanent disability. College freshmen, especially those who live in residence halls, are at modestly increased risk for this infection. This form of meningitis is passed from person to person by close contact. There is an immunization available that affords substantial protection against this disease. For more information about this disease or vaccine, please visit our web site: www.uis.edu/healthservices. All vaccines available through UIS Campus Health Services may be subject to additional charge.
