A $2 million collection of art and artifacts is showcased throughout the ship. The Rotterdam carries only 1,404 passengers, her gross tonnage is 60,000, and she is 781 feet long. Her 10 decks feature a 700-seat live entertainment theatre, 5 lounges, casino, shopping arcade, movie theatre, beauty shop, library, games room, 12 elevators, Internet centre, Greenhouse spa, and 2 swimming pools (one with sliding dome cover). The elegant two-floor La Fontaine Dining Room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with full choice of menu. Is travelling around the world on your Bucket List? Wells Gray Tours has never offered an Around the World experience before, but many people claim it is an important item on their Bucket Lists. It is a costly venture, especially when achieved by air as most airlines charge $4,000 to $5,000 for the flight alone plus expenses at stopovers. Most cruise lines offer the trip which lasts nearly 4 months and costs at least $35,000 per person for an outside stateroom. This onemonth tour combines air and a 17-day cruise and is much more affordable. Dubai is also a Bucket List city for many and this tour stays 4 nights there prior to boarding the ship. The title of this tour “Around the World in 30 Days” is intended to be a play on Jules Verne’s popular book, Around the World in 80 Days. Published in 1873, the novel is the story of Phileas Fogg who accepts a wager to make this journey and travels eastward by ships and trains. Upon his return to London, he thinks he has lost the wager by arriving late, then realizes that he crossed the Date Line and gained a day. This tour is 30 days long if you count crossing the Date Line during the flight from Beijing to Vancouver as a day. However, on the calendar it is 29 days, from January 25 to February 22, 2016.

4th Annual President’s Cruise Roland and Anne Neave invite you to join them for this Around the World tour by cruise and air, the 4th Annual President’s Cruise. Once a year, the Neaves choose a cruise route somewhere in the world and host their President’s Cruise. Roland founded Wells Gray Tours in 1972 and is the company’s President. The first President’s Cruise went to the Eastern Mediterranean in 2013, the second through the Panama Canal, and the third to the Norway Fjords. During this Dubai to Singapore cruise, Roland and Anne will host receptions and socials. They look forward to renewing old acquaintances or meeting you for the first time.

Cruise Notes Shore excursions included: On many cruises, shore excursions are a significant additional expense during your holiday. During this cruise, Wells Gray Tours has arranged private guided tours at Mangalore and Cochin, India; Hambantota, Sri Lanka; 3 days touring in Myanmar; and Phuket, Thailand. In addition, there are 4 nights in Dubai before the cruise and 5 nights in Singapore, Malacca, and Beijing after the cruise. Please book early: Holland America has confirmed a block of staterooms for this tour and they are normally held until three months before sailing (early November 2015). However, any unsold staterooms can be taken away from us at any time when the ship fills. This 17-day cruise is a segment of a 90-day cruise and strong bookings on another segment or the entire cruise can result in our block being reduced. When this has happened before, we had to waitlist disappointed customers, even though we still had seats available on the coaches and planes.

Itinerary Monday, January 25: Meals: L,D We depart from the Okanagan, Kamloops and Salmon Arm, drive to Vancouver and stay overnight at the Fairmont YVR Hotel in the Airport. A get-acquainted dinner is included in Globe@YVR. Tuesday, January 26: Meals: B Our Air Canada flight to Toronto leaves at 9 am, then we board a non-stop flight to Dubai at 9 pm. Wednesday, January 27: Our flight arrives in Dubai in the evening and the local time is 11 hours ahead of Vancouver. Our coach and local guide meet us at the airport and take us to the Holiday Inn Al Barsha where we stay four nights. Welcome to the United Arab Emirates. Thursday, January 28: Meals: B Dubai is a stunning city, sometimes compared to the Emerald City in Wizard of Oz because of its spectacular modern architecture and incredible skyscrapers. Its economic boom can be traced to oil in 1969, but currently trade and oil are important. The city has a population of 2.2 million and is believed to be the fastest growing city in the world. Today, we experience this remarkable city with an eight-hour tour including Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah, world’s largest man-made island; the architectural wonder of the Atlantis Palm Hotel; and the Souk Madinat Jumeirah, a colourful and vibrant market. In the afternoon, we ride the high-speed elevators to level 124 of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building at 828 metres (the CN Tower is only 553 metres). The panoramic view of city, desert and ocean from the observation deck is amazing.

Friday, January 29: Meals: B,L,D In the morning, the tour of Dubai continues with Dubai Creek (part of the harbour); the heritage area of Bastakia with its fascinating wind tower houses built by wealthy merchants; the 180-year old Fort Al Fahidi; and Dubai Museum. Then we cross the creek by Abra, a traditional boat, to the Spice Market and Gold Souk. Next we see Burj Al Arab, the spectacular hotel that looks like curved sails and has become Dubai’s symbol. A traditional cultural Emirati lunch is served at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre in an old wind tower house. The meal has local flair and you can chat with an Emirati host about UAE culture, customs and religion. This afternoon, we experience the desert outside Dubai and board 4-wheel drives for a thrilling ride across sand dunes in the Arabian Desert. We watch a splendid sunset from the highest dune, then continue to a Bedouin campsite for refreshments, camel rides, a belly dancing performance with Arabic music, and a barbecue buffet dinner. Saturday, January 30: Meals: B Today’s touring features the UAE’s other great city, Abu Dhabi. Located 1½ hours west of Dubai on an island in the Persian Gulf, it has also grown with oil production and has over 2 million residents.
