city center and despite decades of fluctuating socio-economic fortunes, Braamfontein remains an important economic and entertainment hub. 3.1 DID YOU KNOW? At Wits University, there are museums dedicated to paleontology, natural science, geology, architecture, rock art and fine art, as well as theatres to visit. Braamfontein is a commercially and culturally diverse business district comprising a mix of office blocks, student accommodation, restaurants, retail outlets, colleges, theatres and hotels. Colloquially known as ‘Braamies’, it is the seat of the City of Johannesburg’s local government and is the home of South Africa’s Constitutional Court and a top South African university, the University of the Witwatersrand.

have enhanced the urban environment. Braamfontein’s allure is its mix of historical landmarks, like the Lord Milner Hotel dating back to 1906, and its bustling modern African mélange of hair salons, newspaper kiosks, fast-food restaurants, spaza (informal) shops and internet cafés. Likewise, Braamfontein attractions range from cultural stalwarts like the Johannesburg Theatre, to the revolutionary Origins Centre that re-examines humankind’s past through the medium of rock art. Braamfontein must-sees include the striking Nelson Mandela Bridge, the Constitution Hill complex, the Johannesburg Planetarium, and a whole new generation of contemporary creative spaces, like 70 Juta, that house avant-garde interior design, art, fashion, and film studios.

4. FACTS ABOUT JOHANNESBURG 3.5 GET AROUND If you’re reasonably fit, most Braamfontein attractions can be accessed on foot. You can also drive yourself around. There is ample parking at Constitution Hill, and you can use the Yale Road parking at Wits University to visit the planetarium, Origins Centre, and all the university museums, galleries and theatre. 4.1 ABOUT JOHANNESBURG Johannesburg is a young city that is yet to celebrate its second centenary, and already it has an incredible history and legacy. The settlement sprang up in 1886 when prospectors found gold in the area now known as the Witwatersrand. When the discovery became public, thousands flocked here in search of fortune and new opportunities. Today, Johannesburg still attracts those who want to realise their dreams and achieve success. The new city was named after two officials of the ZuidAfrikaansche Republiek (ZAR); Johannes Meyer and

Johannes Rissik. Johannesburg grew rapidly and quickly transformed from a small settlement into a full-fledged city. It seemed like nothing could stop its growth, not even the Anglo-Boer war. In those tumultuous times, and beyond, Johannesburg has always been recognised as the golden beating heart of South Africa. Through the years, Johannesburg has been the site of many iconic events. It was where the Springboks beat the All Blacks to take the Rugby World Cup in 1995, and, most recently, it was where South Africa showed the world that we can host an event as large as the FIFA Soccer World Cup with style and grace. Even though Johannesburg is well over 120 years old (founded on 4 October 1886 during the gold rush), it is still one of the youngest major cities in the world. There is only one other city on the continent that is bigger than Joburg, and that is the bustling metropolis of Cairo in Egypt. Johannesburg is the second biggest city on Africa.

9. ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES 9.1 FULL PROGRAMMES (DEGREES) OR DIPLOMAS

9.3 EXCHANGE STUDENTS

At an undergraduate or postgraduate level please refer to Faculty specific rules and regulations.

Recognized exchange agreements exist between Wits and other universities whereby there is reciprocal exchange of students without payment of fees to the host university. Exchange students are required to obtain a Study Visa and a South African Medical Aid cover with a registered South African based medical aid provider before being registered at Wits. If the exchange is for a period of 90 days or less, a visitors visa will suffice and medical aid is not required however it is recommended. A letter of invitation will be issued by the University. Exchange students are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs.

Certain programme (degree) /courses are what we call “restricted” – that means only a limited number of students may be admitted because of limited resources. For example, in the Faculty of Health Sciences, the number of students that can be admitted for the first year of the medical programme (degree) (MBBCh) is limited because of the limited number of hospital placements available. The Faculty Office or Student Enrolment Centre will inform you upon receipt of your application whether you have applied for a restricted programme (degree) /course, and whether you are required to amend your application and choose a different programme (degree) /course. 9.2 STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMME The Study Abroad Programme at Wits University furthers your opportunity to develop relevant career skills. The outstanding academic history, international nature and diversity of the Wits community offers you an excellent academic and sociocultural experience. A number of study abroad courses (± 5 months) in specific fields of excellence within the University are available. To study abroad you must have at least completed one year of university study and meet the academic requirements. The inbound student who wishes to enjoy learning in a culturally diverse community can select a maximum of three (Postgraduate) or four (Undergraduate) courses and receive credits which are transferrable to his/her home institute

28

9.4 OCCASIONAL STUDENTS Occasional students are registered for a course or a number of courses in order to complete a foreign elective requirement from their home university. Students may also be completing a practical component of their programme (degree). Occasional students are required to obtain a Study Visa and a South African Medical Aid cover with a registered South African based medical aid provider before being registered at Wits. If the duration of the study period is 90 days or less, a visitors visa will suffice and medical aid is not required however it is recommended. A letter of invitation will be issued by the University. Occasional students are responsible for their own tution fees, travel and accommodation costs.
