Public Buildings

Our designers investigate potential sites, providing feasibility studies and ideas to create long lasting neighbourhoods. Our plans connect communities, create public spaces, and successfully integrate new homes within established areas.

Masterplanning & Regeneration

Excalibur Estate, Lewisham Urban Masterplan

Built in post-war London, the Excalibur Estate retains a strong sense of community but is in urgent need of regeneration due to the age and nature of the pre-fab housing stock. We have worked closely with residents and the local community through a series of consultations and regeneration forums to ensure the design provides long term viability for all. The design proposal includes a variety of two, three and fourbedroom homes for all life stages and incorporates sustainable solutions. London & Quadrant Housing Group

Dollis Valley, Barnet Suburban Masterplan Adjacent to green belt land in Barnet and with impressive views, we have designed a new masterplan for the scheme which blends in with the surrounding neighbourhood. Our design ethos is for family housing in a low rise, relatively low density scheme that sits comfortably within its context. The design provides 685 new homes through a mixture of houses and large apartments to house families, all with outside space and a CfSH4. The aim is to retain and enhance the green feel of the neighbourhood with tree lined streets, usable green spaces and a clear distinction between private and public space. LB of Barnet

Catford, Lewisham Mixed-tenure Residential Community Development & Retail Located in South East London, the proposed design for the old dog track site has around 600 mixed-tenure homes with a new Network Rail station, community centre and retail units. The sustainable benefits include improved linkage to transport and parks, and the incorporation of various environmental credentials. These include CHP (combined heat and power), the incorporation of photovoltaic panels and a comprehensive SUDS strategy. Countryside Properties / HCA

Our experience ranges from high-density, urban developments and halls of residence to suburban flats and houses. We understand the needs and aspirations of students, private home-buyers and key-workers in the public and private sectors. Our designs do more than simply meet the needs of these individuals - we focus on creating sustainable, practical and attractive homes.

Residential

Twickenham Road, Isleworth, Middlesex Mixed-tenure Homes Responding to context and understanding the site were key in determining the correct strategy for this large residential development. Situated adjacent to the historic Syon Park and the newly constructed West Middlesex Hospital, the design for 280 residential units, including keyworker accommodation, recognises its impact on its environment. Extensive consultations were held with the planning department, CABE and the HCA following which the buildings have been designed specifically with their historical and conservation setting in mind. Willmott Dixon on behalf of Key London Alliance Highly Commended, Evening Standard Awards 2010

St George’s Grove, Tooting Keyworker and Affordable Housing Situated within a mile of St George’s Hospital in Tooting, St George’s Grove provides 557 homes for rent with 78 homes for shared ownership. The density makes this exemplary scheme one of the largest NHS keyworker accommodation sites in the country. Hunters have successfully partnered with the Trust and a private funder to design a mix of cluster flats, family units and private flats. The scheme provides 21st century living with good transport and links to local facilities. St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust

Hammersmith Grove, London Mixed-tenure Homes Extensive community consultations have been carried out to ensure that the scheme integrates sensitively into its physical context within an urban conservation area. The scheme has been designed to provide 70 units for private sale, shared ownership & affordable homes with retail at ground level. It is set to achieve CfSH4 with rainwater harvesting, green roofs, ground source heat pumps and photovoltaics. Notting Hill Housing Group

Alberta House, Tower Hamlets Mixed-tenure Residential Hunters is delivering the design of three residential blocks including a 24 storey new-build with private (including spectacular penthouses) and shared ownership accommodation flats adjacent to London’s financial district. The shimmering glass tower acts as a beacon with coloured glass balconies and green roofs. The scale and massing reflects that of the surrounding buildings whilst bringing a high-quality finish to the area. The 133 homes also have affordable housing, an integral part of the design. Swan Housing Group

Brenley Park, Mitcham Mixed-tenure Homes Designed as part of the London wide initiative with the HCA, Brenley Park provides a variety of housing sizes and types together with a new park for local residents. The heart of the design is based on accessibility, quality of the public realm and housing. The buildings contour the site perimeter, providing natural security to the park and creating a strong bond between private and public space. It provides a host of sustainable features including irrigation water for the park and roof mounted PVs. Key London Alliance

Phase 1 Horton Halls, St George’s, University of London Student Accommodation As part of the wider estate redevelopment by Hunters, including keyworker accommodation, Horton Halls Student Residences provides new and contemporary accommodation for medical students. The Halls have en-suite rooms with shared facilities surrounding a landscaped courtyard. They are part of a strategic review to improve the quality of student applications by providing improved residential facilities. The site is half a mile away from the main hospital in Tooting and phase two has just commenced. St George’s University of London

Oldchurch, Romford, Essex Rented & Keyworker Accommodation A new development on the site of the former Oldchurch Hospital in Romford, this high density scheme comprises cluster flat accommodation for keyworkers and general needs rent. Family Mosaic / L&Q

It is not always desirable, feasible or appropriate to demolish existing buildings. Some sites can offer the opportunity for refurbishment and remodelling. Improving the fabric of a building - making it more attractive more sustainable and more efficient - can provide both economic and social benefits.

Retro-fit, refurbish and remodel

Evenlode, Maidenhead Remodelling / Refurbishment of a 1970s Housing Estate Hunters are remodelling and reconfiguring this 70s estate in order to create a sustainable and inspiring environment for residents to enjoy at every stage of their lives. Working with Hemingway Design, attention has been concentrated on the external space, creating important communal family and relaxation areas. Maidenhead & District Housing Association

Before

Eagle House, Old Street Mixed-use Redevelopment Originally constructed in the 1920’s, this building has been partly demolished and refurbished to provide a 24 storey residential and retail development. Situated in Hackney, on the edge of the City of London, its impressive design and scale create an important gateway between the two. It contains mixed-tenure housing, leisure facilities, retail and offices. McCabe Builders

Local Authority Residential Schemes BREEAM Excellent Hunters are working on an extensive range of residential retrofit and refurbishment projects in London and Essex. The work has been carried out on period and modern properties. The common strand is remodelling them to create an environmentally responsible solution which is recognised through BREEAM as well as improving the condition of the properties for tenants. White Horse Lane gained the UK’s first BREEAM excellent for retro-fitting, it cost £25,000 and will provide pay back within 20 years.

We believe a high standard of living for senior persons is essential whether in private accommodation or a care home. We work with a diverse client base, including private, NHS Trusts, charities and local authorities. Our designs enhance the lives and provide choice for elder persons.

Senior Homes & Care

Willow Close, Newbury Affordable and stylish homes A crescent plan has been used in the design of 63 apartments and bungalow homes to rent for the over-55s. The development acts as a gateway to Newbury and forms the focal feature of the local park. Materials and massing carefully reflect the existing character of the town with design features such as gabion walls and winter gardens. The high quality design of the affordable apartments has excellent space standards and private balconies or terraces. The central gables include mezzanine levels providing residents with a home office, one of the features that aims to future proof this development. Sovereign Housing Association

The Priory, Hungerford, Berkshire Extra Care Overlooking an area of outstanding natural beauty, the two new buildings provide extra care and over 55s homes, are designed to optimise the views. 100% ‘affordable’ homes, the new Priory creates a natural scheme in a place where even the bats will be residents of a new bat barn (photo below right) created as part of the overall mitigation strategy. Sovereign Housing Association

Millbrook Lodge, Brockworth, Gloucestershire Residential Care This two-phase project provides high-quality extra care accommodation. Built in Brockworth, the home aims to improve the current standards of care in the area. It is constructed in traditional masonry over two floors with four distinct care suites of twenty residents. The Orders of St John Care Trust

Bicester, Oxfordshire Mixed-tenure Care Home Combining a 60 bed residential care home with 20 extra care apartments and 40 private homes, this new scheme provides a combined approach to the provision of a varying aged tenure community whilst maintaining the aspiration to deliver care services for residents. The two buildings are linked by a large communal lounge whilst some apartments retain individual entrances, allowing for a sense of security without compromising independence. Access to Bicester, transport and amenities are good and this scheme strikes a good balance between private and community space. The scheme is part of Oxford’s county wide care strategy. The Orders of St John Care Trust and Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association

Students within mainstream and special educational needs deserve engaging learning environments to inspire them. We design schools and colleges that instil a sense of pride for students, staff and the local community.

Education

Forest Way, Leicestershire SEN All Through School This exciting and unique school was inspired by its location within historic woodland. The school’s design reflects its relationship with nature throughout for both pupils and staff, from meandering river-like corridors and giant woodland scenes on walls to an internal courtyard with trees and woodland flooring for a more relaxing atmosphere. Sound and touch are as important as sight in the design and the sound of birds and waterfalls can be heard whilst the pupils play, learn or just travel from room to room. Nature, the use of responsible materials and sustainability have all been principal considerations in the development of the scheme and the school will achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating. Leicester County Council Winner, BCSE Awards 2010 Winner, Procon Awards 2009 Winner, TES School Awards 2009 Finalist, WAN Awards 2009
