ABSTRACT TIM.> hypotlwsis that inorganic and inorganic fertilization rtsUit in the $ilnt ulapia production cfo.ring the rainv Hason was tested at the "E1 Carao" Aquacultural Experiroolt Station, Coma\laQUa, Hondlras as part of the Cllolt II Aquaoulture CRSP. Similar quanums of rritroqen and phosphorus were added to ponds as either layer chicken Htter or urea and triplesuptrphosphate; each treatment had 6 replicates. Chicken litter was applied at a rate of 500 kglha/wk on a dry matter basis, 'R'hile urea was added at a rate of 31.3 kg/ha/wk and trlple-super'phosplte at a rate of 49.3 kglha/wk. Male Ii11Rii!lil2!m. were stocked into 0.1 ha earthen ponds at 10,000 fishlha. Tilapia production was greater wllere chicken litter was u.,. nutrient sOtrce (1594 kg/ha/150 d) than with chemical fertilizer (1153 kglha/150 d). ¥ater quali\y parameters were genwalllj different between treatments although neither treatment 'Was oonsistentllj greater across all variables measured. Total al net production of tht> llmany stocked f"!Sh. 'a'ater samples yer• collected from ponds prier to first fertiltzat1on and prier to harvest and analyzed for major and mllor elements. Pond mud samples were collected prior to ffilinq and after draining, and analyzed for structural and cMmical charact•rlstics.

Data were reported as means and standard deviations by pond; differl'OOO!s betw..n treatments were detKmintd usinq tht> \-test. Differences wwo declared signif"lcant at a~ level 0.05. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIOII

FISH PRODUCTION

Not fish production was gr•ater 1l tht> chicken litter treatment (1426 kg/ha/150 d) than chicken litter treatment continued to gro..., throughout the 150 d

Tilapia reproduction was encoull"IH"ed in the majority of tho ponds. Greater amooots of reproduction were removed from ponds fertilized with chloktn litter (Tablto 2). The net total production, "WMl tho reproduction was included, was 1531 kglha/150 din the chloktn litter treatment, grtoater than tho 1032 kglha/150 d of the ct.mioal fortilizor troatmtnt.

"'I'ATER Q!.IALITY VARIABLES

I

Mean water quality variables, by pond, are summarized in Table 3. "'l'ater quality variable trtoatment means and comparisons (t-tt>St) are shown in Table 4.

Initial concentrations of soluble orthophosphate were smilar in ponds of both troatments, with concentrations ranqing from 0.13 to 0.651Jl9/1 P04-P. Concentrations of soluble orthophosphate 'r((>rt high in both treatments; the mean of 3.78 mg/1 P04-P observed in the chloktn litter treatment was less than tho 9.93 mg/1 P04-P observed in the chemioal ftrtlllzer treatment.

Total phospho! us concentrations in ponds at the start of tho t>xperlment ranged from 0.31 to 0.98 mg/1 P04-P. As with soluble orthophosphate, mean total phosphorus in tho chloktn litter treatment (5.14 mg/1 P04-P) was less than that of the chemioal fertilizer treatiMJlt (13.57

Both forms of phosphorus inon.-.1 throughout the

experiment (FiglrH 2 & 3). The elevated phosphorus concentrations observed 'r((>re probably the rtosult of the high fertilization rate and the prestnCe of clay turbidity in tt.. water. Phosphorus nmJ han bftn strip"" from the pMiicles of clay during analysis.

Concentrations of mean ammonla-nitrogt>n ranged from 0.32-1.01 1T19/I NH3-N. The mean of 0.58 mg/1 NH3-N observed in the chioken litttor troatment was similar to thE> 0.67 mg/1 Mi3-N in the chemical fertilizer 3

fert11izante qulmioo. treatment. Concentrations in both treatments fluctuated in a similar m~nner (Fit,jlre 4).

The mean of 2.07ffi9/l N03N02-N in the chemical fertilizer treatment Yas greater than the 0.04 ffi9/l NarN02-N in the chicken litter treatment.

Dur.~nte el ensayo las concentr rangt>d from 51.97 to 154.26 mg/1 as~- Total s 6 and 7. Variables wen general!IJ similar ~tween treatrnents at each sampling. 'l'ithin th9 chicken litter treatment soil organic matter, total N, Zn, exchangeable Ca and th9 CEC declined significant!IJ during
