A Message from Superintendent Dr. Luis Valentino

A

s the new Superintendent for Albuquerque Public Schools one of the areas that I have been most impressed with is our Capital Master Plan. This Plan guides how we invest your tax dollars to build, maintain and provide our students, staff and community with schools and facilities that are safe, secure, functional and modern. But more impressive is your overwhelming support for APS’s capital projects. Your investment in Albuquerque Public Schools has been essential. As you have seen in the preceding pages of this calendar, we take your trust in APS seriously. For example, this year we are delighted to be opening our newest school George I. Sanchez K-8. This school has been designed to meet the needs of our young learners in the 21st century with wireless connections to the internet throughout the school, open spaces for student and teacher collaboration. and the latest in interactive touch panels. Other projects that we have been able to complete include a new courtyard at John Baker, the Nusenda Credit Union Community Stadium, and the autism center. In addition, we’ve been able to create nurturing kindergarten classrooms and areas, state-of-the-art science labs, safe and fun playgrounds, art and music rooms, performing arts centers, modernized cafeterias and kitchens, libraries with inspiring views, and specially designed spaces for students with special needs. APS has also used taxpayer-approved dollars to fund technology – computers, tablets, electronic white boards, interactive tables, and improved Internet access. Technology isn’t the wave of the future; it’s the reality of today. These are the tools of a new generation, and our teachers are working with our students on how to use these tools to better prepare them for college and career. On Feb. 2, 2016, the Albuquerque community will once again be asked to vote in a school improvement election that will allow APS to continue providing our students with the schools they deserve. We want to continue to build and maintain schools that will provide our children with a world-class education. We thank you for your past support and will continue to work hard to maintain your trust and confidence. With your continued support, together, we can realize the dreams we hold for all of our children. We also thank our many community partners like Albuquerque the Magazine, which is responsible for this calendar, for their continued support.
