APPLYING FOR AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT VISA You must have a valid student visa to enrol and to continue studies at Victoria University. As an international student, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have a valid student visa at all times. Please apply for your student visa at least two weeks before your current visa is due to expire. HOW TO APPLY FOR A VISA You can apply for your student visa at Victoria International, Level 2 Easterfield Building, Kelburn Campus – see www.victoria.ac.nz/international/current-students/visas.aspx. The Visa Officer is available during the following drop-in hours: ̵̵ Monday: 2pm to 4pm ̵̵ Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10am to 12 noon, 2pm to 4pm ̵̵ Friday: 10am to 12 noon.

DOCUMENTS TO INCLUDE WITH YOUR APPLICATION Completed International Student Visa Application Form (attached – copies are available from Victoria International) Two recent passport size photographs Proof of enrolment (such as an Offer of Place or Confirmation of Study) Receipt for payment of tuition fees (or evidence of scholarship) Evidence of sufficient funds to meet your living costs for the length of the visa. A recent bank statement (dated after the payment for tuition fees) or completed Immigration New Zealand Financial Undertaking Form (INZ 1014) or Sponsorship Form For Temporary Entry (INZ 1025) or evidence of scholarship (see next page for more details) Evidence of funds for outward travel. You must show evidence that you have the means to travel to a country to which you have right of entry. This can be either a fully paid travel ticket (open) or sufficient funds in addition to living expenses to buy an air ticket – approx. $1,000 to $2,000 – to cover the cost of outward travel Receipt for payment of the visa application fee of $190. The fee can be paid by EFTPOS or credit card at Victoria International Your passport (please ensure you have sufficient blank pages and your passport expiry date is no less than three months from the time of application)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS ̵̵ You must be enrolled as a full-time student to apply for your student visa through Victoria International, unless you are in your final trimester of study. Full-time study means being enrolled in at least 45 points (or three courses) per trimester. If you are enrolled in fewer than 45 points then please discuss your situation with the Visa Officer. ̵̵ You must be making sufficient academic progress to apply for your student visa through the University. This usually means passing at least two thirds of your courses each trimester. If you haven’t made sufficient academic progress then please speak to the Visa Officer. ̵̵ Attendance Certificate/Transcript If you are applying for your first student visa for Victoria University and have studied in New Zealand previously then please provide an attendance certificate and/or academic transcript from your prior place of study. Current Victoria University students do not have to provide this. ̵̵ PhD students Please provide a letter from your supervisor or faculty, summarising your academic progress and providing an estimation of your submission date. If you have you already submitted, then please bring your submission receipt or confirmation of oral examination. Your thesis title and supervisor's name must be included in this letter.

APPLYING FOR AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT VISA EVIDENCE OF SUFFICIENT FUNDS You must have at least NZ$15,000 available to support yourself for the academic year. If you are studying for a shorter period you must show at least NZ$1,250 for each month you require the student visa. Please note that having a part-time job or providing your payslips is not considered to be sufficient evidence of funds. A bank statement must be for a bank account held in your own name and show the preceding three months transaction history. It must be printed on the bank’s letterhead with the bank’s logo. Deposits from friends in New Zealand are not acceptable. ATM printouts are not acceptable. A Financial Undertaking Form (INZ 1014) may only be used if one was provided with your first student visa application submitted off-shore. The person acting as guarantor must show evidence that they have sufficient funds to support you for the length of the visa being applied for. Evidence of sufficient funds must be in English and can include bank statements, evidence of investments or the guarantor’s payslips. A copy of the guarantor’s passport or ID card must also be included. A Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025) can be used if a New Zealand resident or organisation will be supporting you during your studies. If the sponsor is a person, then they must show evidence that they have sufficient funds to support you for the length of the visa being applied for. Evidence of sufficient funds can include bank statements, evidence of investments or the sponsor’s payslips. A copy of the sponsor’s New Zealand passport or residency visa must also be included. Scholarship evidence should state what the scholarship covers, for example, tuition fees and/or a monthly stipend, how much it pays (for example, $1,500 per month) and its length and/or end date. The Student Visa Application, Financial Undertaking and Sponsorship Forms can be collected from Victoria International or downloaded from www.victoria.ac.nz/international/current-students/visas.aspx

MEDICAL AND CHEST X-RAY CERTIFICATES* If you are a full-fee paying international student, you may be required to provide Medical and/or Chest X-ray Certificate with your visa application, depending on your answers to the questions in Section 5. MEDICAL CERTIFICATION of the Application Form. Note that Medical and Chest X-Ray Certificates must be submitted to Immigration New Zealand within three month of being completed. After submission, they are valid for 36 months. If you are renewing your visa and it has been more than 36 months since you have submitted a medical certificate or chest x-ray, then you may need to provide one or both of these documents. If you do not remember when you last submitted a medical certificate or chest x-ray or do not know if you need to get another one then please call the Immigration New Zealand contact centre on 0508 558 855 or 04 910 9915 and ask them. Any New Zealand registered doctor may complete immigration health certificates, including Student Health at Victoria. Clinics in downtown Wellington that specialise in immigration medical examinations include Capital Medical (0800 700 262) and Life Clinic (0800 005 433). You will need to take your passport with you.

POLICE CERTIFICATE* Students intending to stay in New Zealand for more than 24 months are required to submit a Police Certificate from their country of citizenship and from any country in which they have lived for five or more years since the age of 17. This 24-month period includes time already spent in New Zealand as well as the period of time you intend to be in New Zealand. Police certificates must be submitted to Immigration New Zealand or Victoria International within six months of being issued. They are valid for student visa applications for 36 months after the date of issue. If your home country Police Certificate is not in English, you must have the certificate translated and submit both the original Police Certificate and the original translation of the Police Certificate. If you do not remember when you last submitted a police certificate or do not know if you need to get another one then please call the Immigration New Zealand contact centre on 0508 558 855 or 04 910 9915 and ask them. *It is your responsibility to contact Immigration New Zealand (phone 0508 558 855) for information regarding the validity of your medical and chest x-ray certificates and police certificate.
