LEARNERS NAMED BEST IN COUNTRY IN NATIONAL SKILLS COMPETITION Three of our learners proved they are among the best in the country after triumphing in a national skills competition.

Engineering apprentices Alex Weston and Ricky Burmi and beauty student Sabrina Wootton scooped top prizes in the national finals of the WorldSkills UK competition at the NEC last November. Alex, aged 21, who is an apprentice at the Michael Beetham Conservation Centre

at the RAF Museum Cosford, and Ricky, aged 22, an apprentice at Radshape Sheet Metal Ltd in Birmingham, walked away with silver and bronze awards respectively in the sheet metalwork category of the competition, whilst Sabrina, aged 25, who now runs her own business picked up

Ricky Burmi, Sabrina Wootton and Alex Weston with their WorldSkills UK medals

a bronze award in the beauty therapy category. The WorldSkills UK competition was part of The Skills Show – the UK’s largest skills and careers event – and the college was a premier sponsor of the show. Twenty-two- year-old Alex Weston picked up a silver in the finals of the sheet metalwork category of the WorldSkills UK competition. Alex, who is living every school boy’s dream repairing aircraft from the First and Second World Wars on an engineering apprenticeship at the Michael Beetham Conservation Centre at the RAF Museum Cosford, said: “Taking part was a fantastic experience. I thought I’d done well but it was a very close competition and I was really shocked when it was announced that I’d won the silver medal. I’m really proud of my achievement - it made all the hard work and preparation worthwhile and will look great on my CV.”

HAT TRICK FOR COLLEGE JOURNALISM COURSE A journalism course run by City of Wolverhampton College has been announced as the best performing further education academic year course in the country – for the third year running. The college was named as the top further education provider of the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) diploma at the annual Journalism Skills Conference in Bournemouth in November 2013 and was among five top performing NCTJ-accredited centres presented with awards for the highest percentage of students achieving C grade passes or better in all seven NCTJ exams, including a shorthand speed of 100 words per minute. Course leader Sue Green, who has taught over 300 NCTJ journalism students said: “To win the award once was fantastic, twice was brilliant – but to get the hat-trick is just incredible! “We pride ourselves on the extremely high professional standard of our course. Students get jobs as newspaper reporters because they achieve the excellent results demanded by the awarding body and the industry.” The college has been accredited by the NCTJ since 1997 and is now the only accredited further education journalism training centre in the Midlands. COLLEGE FIRST FOR SPA STUDENTS

A student from City of Wolverhampton College has been named runner up in the regional heats of a competition to find the UK’s best electrical apprentice. Eighteen-year-old Luke Minton narrowly missed out on being named the Regional Apprentice of the Year, after taking part in the West Midlands heats of the MEGGER National Apprentice Electrician of the Year 2014 at South Derbyshire College this February. Judges noted that Luke was exceptionally ‘neat in his work’ and that his ‘calm and methodical style was well suited to the competition.’ He was awarded a tool box full of tools for his efforts.

FORMER APPRENTICE WINS NATIONAL STYLING COMPETITION A former apprentice from City of Wolverhampton College has styled his way to success after winning a national hairdressing competition to discover the new talent. Jamie Richards, director at Richards Hair in Great Wyrley, has been crowned the winner of ghd’s Spotlight competition, picking up a backstage pass to work at London Fashion Week. The 25-year-old, who completed his hairdressing NVQ with the college seven years ago, said: “I’m completely chuffed to have won and to be working with the ghd session team at London Fashion week. I hope this will open other doors into the session styling world.” Spa students have become the first college students in the country to qualify as Dermalogica Certified Skin Therapists – an incredible achievement at such an early stage in their careers.

ENGINEERING APPRENTICES UP FOR SELECTION FOR NATIONAL SKILLS SQUAD

Four engineering apprentices studying for qualifications at the college are up for selection for a national squad to represent the UK in the world finals of a prestigious skills competition. The four - who combine working for local engineering companies with studying for their technical qualifications at the college’s Paget Road campus - are among only seven engineering apprentices in the country to go forward for national squad selection and battle it out to compete in the finals of the WorldSkills competition in San Paulo, Brazil in 2015. The apprentices - Martin Bradburn and Tom Timmins who work for UTC Aerospace Systems Marston UK in Wolverhampton, and Jack Higgins and Joel Wilks who are employed by Radshape Sheet Metal Ltd in Birmingham - are all aged 19 and were selected after impressing judges in the national finals of the sheet metalwork category at the WorldSkills UK competition at the NEC in Birmingham. Engineering apprentice Bethany Colburn, aged 19, has been acknowledged by a local rotary club for her outstanding conservation work.  Bethany, who works at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford, where she helps preserve heritage aircraft, was named ‘Rotary Club of Wolverhampton - Apprentice of the Year’ in February. She said: “I was delighted to have been chosen by the Rotary Club of Wolverhampton as this year’s Apprentice of the Year.  It’s great to have the support of the rotary club and to gain recognition for the conservation work we do.”

ATTEN-SHUN! ARMY FIELD KITCHEN TAKES ROOT IN COLLEGE CAR PARK

Students were star struck when Slade star Dave Hill dropped into the college’s hairdressing training academy. Dave, aged 67, was given a tour of the Hair Academy at the college’s Metro One campus and met students who are studying for a range of full and part-time hairdressing qualifications at the city centre site. The Hair Training Academy is open to the public - for more details see page 20. An army field kitchen took root in the college car park when chefs from 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment and 4th Battalion the Mercian Regiment dropped in to cook up a hearty lunch and talk to students about life in the armed forces. Around 80 students who are studying for catering courses at the college’s Metro One campus in the city centre attended the event to try out their skills in the army kitchen, find out what it is like to cater for large numbers of people, and talk to the chefs about career opportunities available once they have finished their courses.

STUDENTS ENDURE A BATH OF BEANS FOR CHARITY!

Students from City of Wolverhampton College took part in a day of mushy messiness in aid of charity! The students, who are all on youth charity Prince’s Trust 12 week Team programme, endured a bath of baked beans at ASDA Brierley Hill, to help raise cash to spruce up Saltwells Nature Reserve. The baked bean bath raised £175 and will help the team tidy up one of the entrances to the nature reserve, install a new kissing gate and fencing, paint the bridge and carry out general path-side improvements. The Prince’s Trust Team programme gives unemployed young people aged 16 to 25 the chance to learn new skills and improve their confidence and self-esteem through a range of outdoor activities, community work and work experience. During the programme the young people take part in an action-packed residential week, organise fundraising activities, carry out voluntary work in the community and benefit from two weeks’ work

experience with a local employer. Participants also get help with job searches, writing a CV and interview skills, and will gain national qualifications in first aid and food safety and certificates in employability, team work and community skills. The programme was launched in 1990 and City of Wolverhampton College has been delivering courses across the Black Country and Shropshire since September 2000 with over 2000 local young people taking part. The Prince’s Trust aims to support 58,000 vulnerable young people this year, giving them the confidence and skills to turn their lives around.Three in four young people on Prince’s Trust schemes move into work, education or training. For more information on the Team programme see page 24.The college welcomes offers from individuals and businesses to support the delivery of the programme by offering work experience, mock interviews or voluntary projects.

Aged 24 or over? Applying to study at Level 3 or above? You could be eligible for a student loan... Student loans have traditionally only been available to students studying at degree level, but from September 2013 the government launched a new loan scheme to help you access the financial support you might need to study for a qualification. You do not have to start paying back the loan until you have left the course and are earning over £21,000 a year. The loans are not meanstested (income is not taken into account) and there is no credit check.

FAQs Do I qualify for a loan? To qualify for a loan you must: • Be aged 24 or over at the start of your course • Be resident in the UK and studying at an approved college or training organisation in England • Have not previously had a loan to do the same type of qualification and level of qualification How do I know my course is eligible for funding? Eligible courses include: • Access to HE Diploma • Level 3 Certificate or Diploma • Level 4 Certificate or Diploma • Advanced Apprenticeship or Higher Apprenticeship How long will my application take? The majority of applications submitted online should take four to five days. Other applications will be processed within two to four weeks. Will I be able to afford the loan? Research shows that people with a Level 3 qualification or above earn more than those who are not similarly qualified. Repayments will be made at 9% of your annual earnings over £21,000. This means that if you earn £22,000 a year you will have to pay back £7 a month. If you are earning £25,000 your repayments will be £30 a month. If your earnings drop below £21,000 payments will stop. Interest on your loan will be based on inflation (Retail Price Index (RPI). How much will the loan be for? For all eligible courses the loan will be up to the 100% of the cost of the training including course and material fees. This could be from £300 upwards depending on the individual course. You don’t have to borrow the full cost of your course - you can pay for some of it yourself if you wish.

Do I need to apply for a loan for each year I am studying? No.You will only have to apply for one loan to cover the whole length of your course – you don’t have to reapply each year one course, one loan. How is the loan is paid? The money will be paid directly to the college once we confirm that you have attended the course for two weeks. When do I have to start paying back the loan? You do not have to pay back the loan until your course has finished and you are earning over £21,000 per year.

Access to HE: If you receive a loan to study for an Access to HE course, and then move on to do a HE course, the amount outstanding on your loan for your access course will be written off once you complete your HE qualification. How do I pay back the loan? If you’re an employee your employer will work out your repayments and take them out of your salary with your tax. If you’re self employed you make repayments as part of your Self Assessment Tax Return. You can pay off some or all of your loan at any time without incurring an extra charge. Can I apply for more than one loan? Yes, but only after you finish your course - you can only get one loan at a time and you can’t apply for another loan to repeat the same level of a course. You can apply for up to four loans in total. What if I leave the course or want to change course? If you leave or change your course after two weeks you will have to pay back any money that has been paid to the college. If you want to change your course, speak to a member of staff in the Student Hub to see if the loan can be transferred.

To apply online visit: www.gov.uk/advancedlearningloans To apply you will need your National Insurance Number and a form of identity eg passport or birth certificate. You will also need an offer of a conditional place on the course for which you are applying for the loan, which is available from the Student Hub. If you are ineligible for the loan you will need to notify the Student Hub ASAP as you may become liable for the course fees. Please note if your loan is not fully approved then you will be liable for the course fees. Do I have to take a loan out for the course fees? No, you can pay for the fees yourself and we will be happy to set up a payment plan for you, or alternatively if you have a company that is willing to sponsor you we can accept payment from them by a company letter. Alex Lawton decided to do an IT apprenticeship as he didn’t like the idea of university and the debt it involved. The 20-year-old said: “University was a big commitment to make, especially as I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I decided that by doing an apprenticeship I would get paid for doing a qualification and even if I didn’t like it I would still have something to go on my CV. “Studying while I was employed as an apprentice worked well because study only took up one day a week so I wasn’t overloaded - and I ended up with a qualification. “I was delighted to be taken on full-time as an ICT support systems assistant after I had completed my apprenticeship. In this economic climate the fact I now have a job is very fortunate and I know other people are struggling to get into anything. The whole experience has been invaluable.”

Chad Butler was offered full-time employment as a sales assistant after completing his customer service apprenticeship. The 21-year-old said: “I was looking around for a job but there was nothing around so I decided to do an apprenticeship. “I really enjoyed the learning and the training on the job, and it was good that I could come into work and get paid but also do a qualification on the side. “I like the fact that I am never standing around doing the same thing and that I get to meet a lot of different people. “I never thought my apprenticeship would lead to a job and I would tell anyone thinking of doing it to just go for it - you never know where an apprenticeship might take you.”

Hannah Bhuslah decided to embark on a creative industries apprenticeship to give her a wide range of work skills that would help her in her career. The 18-year-old said: “After my A levels I decided I wanted to go into hotel management and that a university course wouldn’t be right for me as I needed to gain work experience. “I decided an apprenticeship would be the best route, and even though I eventually want to work in a different area, my creative apprenticeship has given me some good skills and a strong foundation to move on from. “The college is really good and my qualification is coming together so well. I have got to do lots of things which I never thought I would have done before starting my apprenticeship. I have done radio interviews, photography, social media and even managed music artists. It’s definitely given me lots of experience.”

Rhys Clarkson decided to kick start his career by becoming a plumbing apprentice. The 20-year-old said: “I had been working in a factory but I thought I needed to find myself a proper career. Doing an apprenticeship has given me a fresh start, as I didn’t get the best grades at school. Now I am doing a qualification and getting on the right track. “The people are great at college and I get on with everyone. The tutors are very friendly which means you want to learn and it’s really interesting work.”

Tre Chambers wants to become an electrician so that he will be able to see new places and travel the world. The 18-year-old electrical apprentice said: “Electricians are needed everywhere so this is a career path that should help me travel about and see new things. “The college helped me find my apprenticeship and I am really enjoying it. I’m getting to earn and learn at the same time and widening my range of experience. Learning on the job means I am gaining a greater understanding of the tools and kit required for the job, and being employed has given me the drive to success and also made me a lot more responsible.”
