How emPower™ Works Sensors Remote Interfaces

Security System w/ emPower-enabled Alarm.com GSM Module

Alarm.com Operations Center

Local Z-Wave Network

19

Z-Wave Overview emPower™ services are enabled through integration with Z-Wave device automation technology. What is Z-Wave?  Wireless low-power RF (900 MHz) communication protocol.  Lets devices talk to each other via a local “mesh network” in the home.  Network range expands as more devices are added.  “Open air” range between devices is 100 ft, though this can vary significantly indoors depending on building materials, etc.

20

Laws & Regulations • Always follow: • National, State, and Local Codes • National Electric Code (NEC) • Licensing and Insurance • Are you licensed in your municipality and on the job site? • Are employees insured for electrical and other trade work? • Installation • Always follow manufacturer manuals and installation requirements. • Do not make product modifications or alterations. • Install all products in accordance with UL and CE listings. • Alternative option: partner with a local HVAC technician, electrician, 21 or locksmith who can help with peripheral device installation.

Device Installation & Enrollment • Install the emPower module. For GE Concord and NX, install Alarm.com module outside of the panel to prevent Z-Wave signal interference from metal panel. • In the case of GE/UTC panels, the emPower-enabled module must communicate with Alarm.com before any Z-Wave devices can be added to it. (Perform a GSM test to initiate communication.) • Enter “Z-Wave Add Mode” at the security system (following the specific instructions for the panel being used). • Trigger the Z-Wave device to enroll it. Panel will beep when device is added.  During enrollment into Z-Wave network, device must be w/in 3-6 ft of controller.  GE panels must be connected to AC power for Z-Wave device enrollment to work.  All panels must be connected to AC power for remote Z-Wave commands to work.

22

Using a Portable Controller • A separate portable Z-Wave controller can be added to the Alarm.com module and then used for enrolling other devices (except locks) onto the Alarm.com local Z-Wave network. o Useful in cases where it’s not practical to place the panel and device w/in 3-6 ft of one another for Z-Wave enrollment. o FIRST add the portable controller to network, THEN use it to add additional devices to network. o Can serve as an end-user tool for local device control, or removed after installation (to be re-used in future installations). Recommended Z-Wave controllers: GE portable Z-Wave Controller Aeon Labs Minimote Z-Wave Controller NOTE: Currently, no portable controllers on the market support lock enrollment.

23

Light & Appliance Modules Adding a Light/Appliance Module to the Network: After entering Add Mode on the security panel and with the module plugged into an outlet, double click the button on the module to include it.

 Make sure lamp is plugged into the Z-Wave side of the module (indicated by the Z-Wave logo).  Use a non-switched outlet for the module. Otherwise, ensure the outlet is switched “On.”  Keep lamps switched “On” to allow control through the Z-Wave module, Alarm.com website and mobile apps.  Control dimming of light dimmer modules by pressing and holding button on the module, or through the Alarm.com website. 24 Use these as cost-effective repeaters to expand your Z-Wave network.

In-wall Light Switches & Outlets Adding an in-wall device to the Network: After entering Add Mode on the security panel or remote controller, and with the device powered, double click the button on the module to include it.

Recommended Devices: • GE Dimmer Light Switch (GE 45606) • GE On/Off Light Switch (GE 45609) • GE Outlet/Receptacle (GE 45605)

 If it is not practical to move the security panel 36 ft to the device, consider investing in a controller for installations.  The light/outlet should work properly with manual use before you add it to the Z-Wave network.  Use a non-switched outlet for the Z-Wave outlet. If using switch outlet, make sure the outlet is switched “On” before sending commands.  Only the lower outlet is controlled by Z-Wave. 25

Thermostat/HVAC Installation: Follow the thermostat’s instructions for connecting it to the HVAC system. Adding a Thermostat to the Network: Enter Add Mode at the panel and then trip the Z-Wave device (following the Z-Wave enrollment instructions for the device).

Trane Thermostat Installation Notes: • Requires a 24 VAC common wire (minimum 5 wires from HVAC to thermostat, including the common). • Thermostat’s local schedules should NOT be used in conjunction with emPower. Installation Notes for 2GIG or GE Thermostat: • Can be powered by battery or AC (no 5th wire required if battery mode used). • If using AC, make sure thermostat is connected to AC during Z-Wave enrollment. 26

Locks  Before removing old locks or beginning installation, make sure new lock “footprint” is compatible with existing hardware.  Lock must be within 3-6 feet of the security panel during Z-Wave enrollment.  Before installing lock on door: o Add it to the Z-Wave network. o Move it to the door location where it will be installed and test user code / event reporting functionality via customer web portal Lock devices must complete a “secure enrollment” process during Z-Wave network enrollment, which may take up to 1 minute. (Wait for the lock’s indicator light to indicate success before continuing with installation.) Kwikset Deadbolt Schlage Lever and Leverset Locks Max user codes

Z-Wave Network Tip: Expand in Pairs

• If a device is not in direct range of the panel, you may need to add additional AC-powered Z-Wave devices between the panel and that device. This will help extend the range via a mesh network. • Build out the Z-Wave network in pairs of devices. • More devices allow for multiple Z-Wave communication paths, preventing any one device from becoming a “bottleneck” in the network.
