irst of all, let me introduce myself. I’m Joe Malone, the new editor of IRN. I’ve previously worked on KHL sister magazines International Construction and Construction Europe. But, enough about me. Despite being new to all things rental, there has already been a number of big stories that have caught the eyes of the industry. Most notably, at the time of going to press, Belgian company TVH Group remained locked in a bidding war with Loxam for the UK’s Lavendon Group. Its latest offer stands at 261 pence per share – one pence higher than Loxam’s most recent offer. The company has also invested in a further 5.9% of Lavendon stock. You can read more about TVH Group's bid on page 6. News of an acquisition that has crossed the finishing line over the last few weeks comes from Latvian rental company Storent, which begun its expansion into the Nordic markets with the capture of Finnish company Leinolift. Prior to its Leinolift ownership, Storent operated 21 rental depots across Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, but will expand into Finland through its new venture. Under the agreement, however, Leinolift founder Jouni Leino will continue to manage the company. Read more on page 6. I’ve also had the pleasure of speaking to Robert Preville, CEO of online equipment rental marketplace specialists Kwipped. I interviewed him about the company’s rise and potential, as it aims to be the go-to operator for potential renters. The company has raised nearly €662000 since its existence, and boasts around 500 suppliers which have uploaded over €52 million in assets. It has only recently begun renting construction equipment, but Mr Preville said the company was looking to expand in this market. See page 12 for the full interview. Other things to look out for in the issue include Show Guides for ConExpo, The Rental Show and Executive Hire Show, as well as previews on the International Rental Exhibition (IRE) and APEX. Product features include gensets and rental software. Thinking aloud, there will be major interest in the US construction market over the coming months, with the country’s newly-elected President Donald Trump promising to rebuild America. Within his first 100 days in office, Mr Trump has promised to cancel all payments to UN climate change programmes and use that money to fix US infrastructure – watch this space… So, on that note, I’d like to wish you all a very happy New Year, and I hope to meet as many of you as possible on my travels. Besides, ConExpo is just around the corner. And, if there must be socialising, so be it. Enjoy the read.

Latvia’s Storent acquires Leinolift Latvian rental company Storent has begun its expansion into the Nordic markets with the acquisition of Finnish company Leinolift. Leinolift – which was founded in 2006, and employs around 50 people – rents aerial lifts and cranes, as well as providing crane, lifting, transportation, hauling and jacking services. Under the agreement, Leinolift founder Jouni Leino will continue to manage the company. Mr Leino said, “With Storent’s ownership, we will be able to continue and expand the co-operation with our customers and offer them categories of equipment that were not in our portfolio before partnering with Storent. We will also continue to ensure that our company maintains the highest quality standards.”

INTERNATIONAL RENTAL EXHIBITION (IRE)

Meanwhile, Andris Bisnieks, founder and member of the board of Storent, said, “This acquisition, together with the recent green field investment in Sweden, begins our expansion to the Nordic markets. “It allows us to intensify our expertise in access equipment and to expand our fleet. We are delighted to partner with Jouni Leino who, for the past ten years, has managed to build a successful business and excellent customer relationships in Finland.” Storent operates 21 rental depots across Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The company said the consolidated revenues of both companies amounted to approximately €30 million. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

HIGHLIGHTS

■ Doosan-Bobcat, Hidromek, Mecalac and Venieri are among the latest exhibitors to sign up for the Samoter show, to be held in Verona, Italy, from 22 to 25 February. The upcoming edition, Samoter’s 30 th, will focus on technologies and solutions for the prevention and management of environmental emergencies. ■ UK rental company Ashtead Technology has acquired TES Survey Equipment Services, in a bid to increase its customer service offering in the Middle East. The company, which is headquartered in Abu Dhabi, sells and rents a range of environmental, geophysical, survey and ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) equipment. Ashtead said that the Middle East was a region with strong potential for its company.

Lavendon still up for grabs The latest offer in the Lavendon Group buy-out saga comes from TVH, which increased its offer to 261 pence per share, one pence higher than Loxam’s most recent offer, as well as investing in a further 5.9% of Lavendon stock. The third revised offer from TVH values the entire share capital of Lavendon at approximately £444 million (€510.20 million), while the additional 10,018,857 shares it has bought from Unicorn Asset Management Limited - which had previously agreed to the price - means TVH now owns 20.4% of Lavendon shares. TVH also said it was ready to immediately buy shares at its latest offer price from any Lavendon shareholders wishing to sell. Meanwhile, Lavendon has

announced its expectations of betterthan-forecasted results for 2016, after year-on-year rental revenue growth of 8%. Its UK market accounted for 46% of its rental revenue. A Chilean company has established an online equipment rental portal that aims to improve the efficiency of the rental market. The company, Maquinarias Online, now aims to expand its operation to Brazil and other markets in Latin America. The company said it had received more than 15000 visits to the site since its existence, and planned upload more than 1000 machines.

Leinolift’s fleet includes products from manufacturer Sinoboom

HIGHLIGHTS

■ Formwork manufacturer Peri is building a new primary plant for its PERI UP scaffold technology in Günzburg, Germany, as it outlines its plans for expansion in the scaffold sector. It said the capacity in its headquarters in Weißenhorn, in the south of Germany, was too small, and the new plant would provide appropriate space to expand its business. The company added that “considerable investment” was planned for its Weißenhorn site, expanding its facilities for its formwork technology production. ■ US-based trench and traffic equipment rental specialists National Trench Safety (NTS) has opened a new branch in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland branch takes the company’s total branch operation to 29, which the company said allowed NTS to provide its national, regional and local market customers with high-level customer service. Ron Chilton, president of NTS, said, “Cleveland is a large market with an economy that has shown signs of strengthening over the last few years.”

NEWS 7 HIGHLIGHTS

■ Eight Hewden depots have been sold by Hewden Administrators EY, following the announcement of the UK equipment rental business going into administration. Depots in Bedford, Inverness, Whitehaven and Willenhall have been sold to Morris Leslie, while the Bangor and Warrington depots were sold to JK Ashbrook. The Nottingham depot, meanwhile, was sold to Nixon Hire. ■ Cramo has launched its new online rental service eCRent in Sweden, Finland and German, rolling out the system to its other territories gradually during 2017. The launch comes at the same time as the company renews its websites, both the group site and the individual country sites. ■ Socage has acquired crane and truck mounted platform manufacturer Manotti. Socage, based in Modena, Italy, decided to buy fellow Italian manufacturer and competitor Manotti to reinforce its position in the market. Fiorenzo Flisi, president of the Socage Group, which until now primarily produced truck mounted platforms, said he took the opportunity of buying Manotti as soon as he was presented with the idea. ■ US equipment rental holding company Rental Equipment Investment Corp (REIC) has acquired all the assets of Columbia River Machinery (CRM), along with certain liabilities, the company has confirmed. CRM is an equipment rental company, based in Oregon, US, meaning REIC now owns a total of 21 locations across five states.

Two year prison term for rental access manager The manager of a UK-based access rental company has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for his neglect of health and safety obligations that led to the death of one man and caused serious injury to another. After a 16-day trial at Airdrie Sheriff Court in Scotland, 57-year-old Donald Craig was found guilty of a breach of health and safety legislation and sentenced to the maximum penalty of two years imprisonment. On 20 June 2012, Gary Currie, a safety net rigger, and Alexander

Nisbet, a self-employed operator contracted by Craig Services, were in the basket of the platform removing netting from the facade of the Buchanan House office block at Port Dundas Road in Glasgow city centre when the third main boom section buckled causing the platform’s basket to fall 28m to the ground, with the result that Alexander Nisbet was seriously injured and Gary Currie suffered fatal injuries. Hamilton based Craig Services & Access was also found guilty of three charges relating to the collapse of

a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) and failures in relation to it maintenance and use and was fined a total of £61000 (€69477). Another company, J M Access Solutions, was fined £30000 (€34169) for its failure to carry out a systematic and detailed thorough examination of the platform and its safety-critical parts. This was following an earlier incident, in May 2011, involving the platform after which Craig Services & Access had instructed a repair to the damaged section of the main boom.

UK rental company Lomond Plant has added 98 new JCB machines to its fleet, in a deal worth £5.5 million (€6.34 million). The company – which is based in Falkirk, Scotland – said the new models supported its ambitious expansion plans, which had already seen growth in the North West of England, with depots in Yorkshire and the Midlands to follow.

IRE sold out The International Rental Exhibition (IRE) has now sold out, with the recent addition of companies including Caterpillar, Swepac and Western Global taking the total number up to 59. More than 65 brands of equipment will be on show at the event, which takes place at the Amsterdam RAI centre in the Netherlands on 2 to 4 May 2017. Read page 27 for more.

8 NEWS

News from khl.com MANUFACTURERS

■ Terex Corporation is selling its UK-based compact construction business to a subsidiary of Groupe Mecalac, which has manufacturing facilities in France, Germany and Turkey. Mecalac is a manufacturer of a range of compact construction equipment for urban, utility and railway construction sites. The Terex compact construction business in the UK – at Coventry – manufactures and sells backhoe loaders, site dumpers and compact compaction rollers. ■ Swedish manufacturer Husqvarna Group has agreed the acquisition of Pullman Ermator, as it looks to expand its construction division. Pullman Ermator, which is headquartered in Smedjebacken, Sweden, manufactures dust extractor systems, dry and wet vacuums, and air scrubbers for the light construction industry. Pullman Ermator’s revenues for 2016 were around SEK300 million (€31.48 million), and Husqvarna said the acquisition would have a “limited positive effect” on the group’s operating income and net results for 2017. ■ Skyjack is helping build one of the largest construction projects in Europe, which is injecting billions of pounds into the UK economy. A fleet of 100 Skyjack mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) are working on London’s Crossrail project. The multi-billion pound scheme will result in a major new 62-mile railway system across the UK’s capital and its surrounding regions. The Crossrail project will link 40 stations along its route including 10 new stations.

RENTAL ROUND-UP

■ UK rental company Speedy Hire has announced it has acquired the brand, business and assets of Lloyds British Testing. Lloyds British carries out testing, certification and inspection of lifting equipment, as well as training across the UK. Speedy Hire said that around 200 Lloyds British employees will join its company, across the existing network of 12 Lloyds British offices.

■ Ashtead Group, the owner of UK rental company A-Plant and US-based Sunbelt, has recorded a year-on-year increase in its revenues of 13% to £1.44 billion (€1.69 million) for the first half of the 201617 financial year. The company’s operating profit was also up 9% year-on-year for the same period to £474.4 million (€556.34 million). Geoff Drabble, CEO, Ashtead Group, said the company had benefited from a “clear and consistent” strategy of growth. ■ Advanced Access Platforms, a UK-based rental company, has added two Snorkel SL30SL Speed Levels to their fleet. The order for the units was placed with Snorkel UK’s Linda Betts, by Advanced Access Platforms owner, John Corcoran in late 2016. Advanced Access Platforms has two depots located in Sutton in the South of London and runs a fleet of more than 600 units. ■ Temporary power provider APR Energy has renewed its strategic alliance with US-based GE to provide mobile turbine technology to the

MARKETS

power rental market. Under the agreement, APR Energy will be the rental provider of GE mobile gas turbines under 50MW. The company will also acquire GE’s new Generation 8, GE TM2500+ mobile turbines, in a bid to upgrade its fleet. ■ Rental company HSS Hire claims it has raised £13 million (€15.30 million) via a share pricing, giving it added financial power to invest in its fleet. The company, which provides tool and equipment hire and related services, has conditionally placed 15.45 million new ordinary shares at 83.88 pence per share with a number of its existing shareholders. ■ UK rental company A-Plant has announced it has successfully retained the SafeHire quality mark certification. The certificate was awarded by the Hire Association Europe (HAE) – a European body for the development of the hire and rental industry. The accreditation was awarded following an inspection which included a detailed audit of 12 service centres, selected at random by the HAE. ■ Kennards Hire has opened its 23rd branch in Victoria, Australia, following the acquisition of Werribee Trade Hire. Like Kennards Hire, Werribee Trade Hire is a family owned business and serves Melbourne’s western suburbs. Its staff will be retained. Neil Masterson, general manager of Kennards Hire, Victoria, identified Werribee’s local expertise as crucial to its success in the area.

■ A fall in Great Britain’s construction output of 0.2% has been recorded in November 2016, compared with October 2016, which is largely being attributed to a contraction in nonhousing repair and maintenance. The figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) are said to show that the underlying pattern as suggested by quarter-on-quarter movement shows a slight contraction of 0.1%. ■ An optimistic outlook for construction in South East Europe is being reported, while Eastern Europe’s market is said to be at a standstill, according to EECFA, the association dealing with the construction markets of Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and Ukraine. In its winter construction forecast, the association said that the optimism in South East Europe followed a 2016 which saw shrinkage in the civil engineering market in the EU countries of the region. ■ Building construction in France is on the rise again, according to CISMA (the French association of manufacturers of construction equipment and material handling technology), which said that 375000 new homes were expected to have been built this year – 30000 better than last year. It added that, at the same time, non-residential building starts had totalled 24 million m², a rise of 2.7%, at the end of the 12 months to September. CISMA said that the rise was expected to be close to 5% this year. It also said that, in terms of public works, the news was encouraging, and that order intake had increased, while road improvements would rise 3%.

How to kill a goose Potential new owners of Lavendon must learn from mistakes made by Sun Capital, in order to succeed, writes Kevin Appleton.

L

et me start by wishing you a Happy New Year – one that brings you all you need, if not all you want. The UK rental industry (and sorry to our non-UK based readers for being parochial here) has had a couple of newsworthy events in the run in to Christmas. These were the sad demise of the oncepowerful Hewden and, at much the same time, the bidding war between TVH and Loxam for the ownership of Lavendon Group. The second of these sagas is still in play at time of writing, so I’ve no idea how it will all end. Reviewing the Hewden story first, this seems to me to be a depressing tale of how unsympathetic, non-understanding ownership, coupled with poor management decisions can lead to the destruction of companies that once seemed indestructible.

Perhaps nothing is more poignant than a comment attributed to the company by the Daily Telegraph towards the end of its life last October, saying it had been “impacted by market uncertainty following the vote to leave the EU”. A comment like this is the business equivalent of saying that someone with a long-term terminal illness was, at the end, “impacted by the inability to continue drawing breath” without mentioning the illness at all. It may well have been a final symptom, but the Brexit vote was most certainly not the cause of Hewden’s demise. The most recent, as it transpires, is Sun Capital Partners, which bought the business from previous owners, Finning, in 2010 for around £110 million (€129.56 million). The business then folded with around £190 million (€223.79 million) of debts at the end of 2016. A tempting narrative is of a private equity owner loading a business with debt in order to extract cash from it, and where the servicing of that debt crippled the business, leading to its ultimate demise. Tempting, but again, I suspect rather simplistic.

Visible issues If one looks back through the news archives relating to Hewden, a lot of its issues were visible during the period of its ownership by Finning, which bought the company in 2000 for approximately £420 million (€494.70 million). That number isn’t a mistake. Yes, a business that, come its end, had revenues of a little over £100 million (€117.78 million) and couldn’t support debts of £190 million (€223.79 million), had annual revenues of £260 million (€306.24 million) and profits of £43 million (€50.65 million) only sixteen years previously. So how does that happen? Again, if you look back through the news archives, fairly early on in its ownership, Finning started to put its own dealership background management into a rental organisation. Whether this was due to retirements KEVIN APPLETON is former CEO of Lavendon Group and former divisional chairman of Travis Perkins. He is currently managing director of Yusen Logistics UK, non-executive chairman of Horizon Platforms, non-executive director at Ramirent Oyj, non-executive director at Arco Ltd, and non-executive director of the Freight Transport Association. or a need to feel a greater sense of control I don’t know, but it clearly meant that the people who had built the business that was then acquired were no longer around to steer the ship. In turn, this meant that the reaction of the new parent to each and every setback was to apply standard corporate logic and restructure. The story of Hewden between 2002 and 2010 was seemingly the story of an annual restructure, including selling its tool hire outlets to Speedy Hire in 2007, and thereby sequentially reducing the business’ capacity to self-heal. It was inevitable that the ultimate restructure – a disposal – would happen at some stage. So the business that Sun Capital acquired was probably already emotionally and psychologically in terminal decline. There were several attempts at investment and small acquisitions under their ownership to try and reverse that trajectory, but it is incredibly hard to change the mind-set of a business and management that had become addicted to the elusive magic solutions of restructure and rediscovery, rather than the hard but fruitful road of optimising and building on core strengths. The attempts to reinvigorate just ended up adding more debt and contributing to the inevitable outcome. There are lessons here. The main lesson is to be a sympathetic owner and be prepared to show humility in what you can learn from the successful management of a business you have acquired, rather than impose a culture that may have worked for the acquiring business, but could kill the new patient. Let’s see how and if Loxam and/or TVH and Lavendon work through those questions. IRN

12 INTERVIEW: KWIPPED

Going e-Kwipped As online rental marketplace specialist Kwipped enters the construction equipment market, Joe Malone speaks to CEO Robert Preville about the company’s rise and potential.

O

nline rental marketplace specialist Kwipped began its adventure 2014, when the would-be CEO Robert Preville formed the company, which now employs five people in its US headquarters, in North Carolina. Kwipped has since raised investment funds of more than US$700,000 (€662000), and boasts around 500 supplier partners, in the shape of companies looking to rent equipment, who have made available a total equipment fleet valued at over US$55 million (€52.01 million) in assets. The company has entered the construction equipment rental market because it believes the general trend towards ecommerce and online transactions will also take place in the equipment rental sphere. IRN spoke to Robert Preville. “There’s a general shift, not only in the world of construction and heavy equipment, but in the world of consumers and business, towards everything happening online. We feel like the rental industry is headed in that

Robert Preville, CEO, Kwipped

direction as well, and Kwipped is a tool that supports that trend, which hasn’t been done before,” he said. Kwipped describes itself as a business-to-business equipment rental marketplace, where organisations rent specialised equipment from a global network of pre-sourced suppliers.

What is the process for renting something from Kwipped? How does it work? Robert Preville: The way the process works is, when a potential renter puts a request in, we qualify it and match it up with suppliers that can help out and match that request. We also tell the suppliers who’s asked for rent. They then present their quotes and, if the renter accepts the quote, they’ll enter their credit card and accept the rental contract. At that point in time the supplier has full contact

information on the renter and the idea is they can make the phone call offline and begin their relationship. It’s up to the supplier to organise logistics.

How can potential renters check for product quality on the website, rather than price being the decisive factor? Price isn’t really the prime factor behind most of our rentals. What typical drives decisions is knowing whether the product is an ideal solution for a problem or application and, with technical equipment, there’s a lot of questions that need to be answered there. Often the supplier is the domain expert and has to help that fit the right solution to the application, so

Who is Robert Preville? Robert Preville is not unusual in the online realm in that he had no previous experience of his chosen business – equipment rental – before creating Kwipped. The entrepreneur sold two companies before forming Kwipped. The first, MFG, is an online market place for buying and selling contract manufacturing services, which gave him a flavour of working for an online platform. The second company, Global Test Supply, is a distributor of electronic test and measurement equipment. Mr Preville started his career at EDS (now Siemens), and also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park.

INTERVIEW: KWIPPED 13

Kwipped has built a collaboration platform so that, during this procurement process, suppliers can use a method system to ask questions to the renter, and the renter can ask questions to the supplier. Once they have enough information at hand, then the appropriate solution can be recommended. We have our own internal standards and we hold suppliers accountable to certain marketplace metrics. And, if they’re not able to meet those standards, we either work with them to improve or we have the option to phase them out because we know that this does not work if people get equipment and it’s broken or people don’t do what they say they’re going to do. So we have a lot of things built in to measure quality and other things on the drawing board with regards to intelligently designing rating systems or metric systems so that we can say whether a supplier has a great track history on Kwipped and you should have no concerns renting with the. Likewise, this renter has rented from us for two years now and this is a great renter, and you shouldn’t have concerns about the renter abusing your equipment or not knowing how to use it.

What is the company’s business model? How does it make money?

How does company attract suppliers?

It’s a transaction fee model. We take a percentage of the rental transaction. It’s transparent to the renter. So when the supplier provides a quote through our platform or uploads an inventory for rent, they price it, but they price it knowing that our transaction fee will be coming out of that rental transaction. I think the reason the rental industry has lagged behind is that there are certain complexities to rentals, and those complexities we are navigating. The unique thing is that we are not re-renting equipment. When a renter executes a rental on Kwipped, the electronic agreement gets signed between the renter and the supplier directly. It’s similar to when you buy an airline ticket from a travel site – you’re agreeing to the terms of the specific airline or hotel, not necessarily the travel site.

Supplier acquisition comes down to good old fashioned elbow grease. We have an internal team of sales people who are dedicated to supplier acquisitions. We’re bringing on the early adopters now and they’re on board with our new ideas. As we enter into certain markets it’ll get easier because word of mouth takes place. An example of a surveying company is Leica, which are on board with us now. We’re starting to get attention from the large suppliers, but it takes some time to get that momentum.

How are things looking for the future for Kwipped? Things are going very well. We’re seeing rapid adoption on the part of both the renters and suppliers. We’re seeing certain disruptions in industries where

rental options weren’t quite as obvious to the market. For example, lab and science equipment. Most people don’t think of renting it because they didn’t think they could and we are approaching suppliers that have never rented equipment and we’re telling them that there’s rental demand. We’re finding rental demand for these assets. We ask companies whether they are willing to start renting some assets, assuming they have inventory, and the response so far has been very good.

How many suppliers do you have? We have about 500 suppliers. Some of these suppliers are small businesses and some of them are quite large businesses with dozens of locations. A better metric in terms of the supply is that those suppliers have uploaded about US$55 million (€52.01 million) in assets. There’s also a large amount that our suppliers have not uploaded because certain assets don’t fit that well into a quote checkout process because of the amount of collaboration that’s required to fit. It may be a modular solution that has to be put together so a lot of companies don’t upload their assets, but still respond to the quotes when they come through. They have assets but they’d rather respond with a custom quote, rather than uploading something that someone might not understand. We potentially held off on the core construction market in the beginning. The reason we did that was because we’re a start-up company and it takes a lot of work to build up a rental category that’s got geographical constraints. You can’t ship and excavator from the US to Europe, so it’s a lot more work and we need a lot more suppliers to cover the geography, whereas in other equipment markets like land surveying, a theodolite can be shipped > Kwipped currently employs five people, but sees the potential to triple, or even quadruple that figure, in the near future. Kwipped boasts around 500 suppliers which have uploaded over US$55 million (€52.01 million) in assets JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017 IRN

anywhere in the world. So, we were focusing on building the market categories that aren’t hampered by geography. One thing that we’ll say is that we’re seeing a huge response in the construction industry for telecom and power utility categories, specifically bucket trucks and, at least in the US, there’s a lot of fibre being laid right now and utility work being done.

it’s purely based on what we’ve received so far. When we formed we received equity investment and we raised some convertible debt. Today we have raised over US$700000 (€662000). We’re growing rapidly and a hockey stick curve is starting to present itself. However, due to competitive reasons we’re keeping our financial information private.

How big is Kwipped? How many people does it employ?

Given Kwipped operates on a piece of software, is this a market you could venture into?

We have five people. We just closed a round of funding last month from a venture group here on the East Coast of the US. We’re in the process of raising additional funding and we intend to scale our business as rapidly as we can. We’ll move office space to allow us to expand our team to 15 to 20 people. We’ve built a model based on the funding we received. However, 20 people isn’t the ceiling for us,

We are essentially a software platform. We’ve build a platform that gets into basic inventory management functionality, all the rental e-commerce functionality, and electronic contract signatures – all that sort of stuff is built in to Kwipped. We have even been approached by numerous suppliers who have asked if they can pay to have Kwipped power their own

website, but in a way that is unique to themselves. We’re looking into a spin-off product that can do that. We do rely on some strategic venders to power what we’re doing. One of those company’s is called Stripe – an electronic processing tool. Stripe allows us to intelligently send payment from renters directly to our suppliers’ bank accounts, so we can do direct deposits and they manage all the PCI compliant and all the financial technology aspects of it.

Could Kwipped expand into new sectors still? We want to continue growing in our current target markets, there’s no question there. That’s where the core of our business is and will continue to be, but I do think that there is some certain disruptive markets that are quite interesting, and we’re getting certain feedback to validate our theories here. Generating innovation Manufacturers continue to look for gaps in the market to ensure their generators stand out from the crowd. Joe Malone looks at the latest products available for the rental market.

W

hile manufacturers of generators continue to innovate, aiming to stay ahead of the game, customers are likely to face big challenges, as the deadline closes in on the proposed EU Stage V emissions regulation, according to Pachal Duponcheele, product manager, generators and lighting systems EMEA, Doosan Portable. The enhanced standards will come into force in 2019, and Mr Duponcheele believes the price impact will be “considerable”. He said, “We have to think that its first time that generators will face an emissions change. The reality of this will hit home for first time in portable generators. This will be a big challenge for customers, as the price impact will be considerable.” He added that the key factor for generators was that they would have to “miss out on climbing the staircase”, rather than making gradual changes. The company has experienced strong demand in the rental market for generators, said Duponcheele, but he claimed the future remained unclear. He said, “We live in an uncertain environment at the moment, so companies are not ordering for quarters in the future. This was already happening before

Brexit. Brexit will have an impactt on supplierss of products from Europe to the UK, or UK exporting to Europe.” Mr Duponcheele added, however, that Doosan Portable Power was expecting stable growth over the next few years. He said, “Generators rely on rental, with around 80 to 90% of generators sold via rental companies, because the market is unpredictable. The need for it is temporary. “Manufacturers push the risk to rental companies for portable generators. Now in uncertain times, rent is safer. However, there is still huge potential for Doosan to improve. Generally, the generators sector has a big potential for growth over the next five years.” The company has recently launched its new G400IIIA and G500-IIIA generators, which are said to meet EU Stage IIIA engine emission regulations for generators. As well as improving in its emissions standards, the generators claim to have been redesigned to offer increased reliability, high performance and a wider choice of features to meet the needs of temporary power applications. When operating at maximum capacity, the

Paschal Duponcheele, product manager, generators and lighting systems EMEA, Doosan Portable

G400-IIIA produces an output of 400kVa, while the G500-IIIA produces an output of 500kVa. Output performance stability has also improved due to an optimised powertrain, which features a combination of Scania Stage IIIA engines and Leroy Somer alternatives. Fuel efficiency has also improved, claims Doosan Portable Power, due to the use of variable speed radiator fans for both models. The generators have a standard fuel storage capacity offering a minimum of ten hours of autonomous operation, while a 24-hour on-board fuel tank configuration is also available as an added option.

Double the size

Atlas Copco has doubled its QES portable generator range with six new models

Atlas Copco is doubling the size of its QES portable generator range with six new models that are said to be designed to provide predictable power in a greater diversity of applications. The new generators are more powerful than the original five launched from the range, as they produce an output from 60 to 200kVA, while the original five produce an output between 9 and 40kVa. Atlas Copco says it aims to provide rental users with a practical and trusted power solution with its new additions to the QES range.

Silent Plus range Where Atlas Copco is has expanded its rental range, Spanish manufacturer Himoinsa has focused on reduced noise emissions with its new Silent Plus Range. The company claims its new range has reduced noise emissions without limiting the performance of the machine. The company’s new range of generators include Yanmar, FPT-Iveco and Scania engines with outputs between 20 and 500kVA, and boast a noise level of around 60dB. The first model in the Silent Plus Range is the HRFW-250 T5. The company says the low levels of noise are achieved through a more complex design of air intakes and outputs. Two exhaust silencers have also been added as standard, as well as improved insulating materials such as high-density, 100mm thick rock wool. Silent blocks have also been sized specifically for the engine-alternator assembly and its dynamic characteristics, says Himoinsa.

Meanwhile, Atlas Copco has launched two new w inverter power (iP) generators – the P 2000i and P 3500i – which are said to offer contractors a lightweight, efficient and nd reliable source of portable power. The company’s new inverters use advanced electronics tronics and magnets, which boast high efficiency. An inverter, in essence, produces first high voltage multi-phase AC power. er. The AC power is then converted to DC. The DC power is inverted verted back to clean AC predictable power at the required voltage oltage and Atlas Copco’s new P 3500i frequency. inverter power (iP) generator Designed for daily use, the iP portable generators are said to Atlas Copco’s new P 3500i be easy to operate, and have a recoil start function to provide inverter power (iP) generator fast activation. The company also says that fuel consumption is low as a result of its variable speed control, which adapts engine speed to load conditions. Sergio Salvador, product marketing manager for small generators at Atlas Copco Portable Energy, said, “Construction sites are becoming more demanding in terms of power needs. Low noise levels are required on all metropolitan construction to avoid noise pollution. “In addition, wider environmental issues, such as reduction of CO2 emissions, are also a big consideration. Therefore easy transportation and reduced fuel consumption are a firm customer requirement.”

Himoinsa has released its new Silent Plus Range, which claims reduced noise emissions without limiting performance

Himoinsa says the new range is geared towards the rental market, with enhancements for applications ideal for work in urban areas where there are greater acoustic restrictions. The unit has also been fitted with a watertight and highly-resistant canopy, and boasts wide doors with more hard-wearing stainless steel locks, making it easier to maintain. The HRFW-250 T5 also comes with a 1,660 litre tank, which the company says adds to the low consumption of its common rail injection engine, and allows it to run for 30 hours without having to refuel. Also adding to its range is Belgian generator

Chicago Pneumatic has added four new CPPG inverter models to its range

specialist Europower, which has launched a new 3000rpm rental generator range. The company said its range was more compact than its previous machines, but that they were highly reliable. It says the Kubota engines which are used have life-spans of at least 7500h in 3000rpm, with planned maintenance intervals. It says parallel operation between generating sets, remote monitoring, automatic oil filling, spark arresters and much more would also be present on the latest rental models. In the large size segment of the market, comes an interesting development from Kohler, the company that also operates the SDMO brand of gensets. Kohler has launched a new range of large diesel industrial generators, which it says are designed to deliver improved durability and reliability. The company’s new KD Series includes generator sets with a capacity between 800 and 4200kVA, which are powered by a new line of G-Drive engines. Kohler says the generators are available globally under the Kohler and Kohler-SDMO brands, with its targeted industries including water treatment, oil and gas, telecommunications, and mining. The company claims its generators deliver the “best fuel consumption” at more nodes than any other competitor between 800 and 2500kW, while they were designed to meet global emissions regulations. > JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017 IRN

its range of portable generators with the addition of four new CPPG inverter models, which it says are designed for contractors who require a clean and reliable source of AC power below 3kW. The company’s new CPPG inverters feature a recoil starter, producing a faster start-up time. Chicago Pneumatic claims the generators can operate

efficiently in tough weather conditions, due to their rugged design and thermal protective features. Tony Calippe, spokesperson at Chicago Pneumatic, said, “The CPPG Inverter complements our existing range of portable generators, which reflect Chicago Pneumatic’s reputation for equipment that is robust and both simple to operate and maintain.” The CPPG inverter generators are available in 50 and 60Hz variants. Finally, taking a slightly different view on products, Pump and power rental specialist SLD Pumps & Power in the UK has enhanced its hire fleet of power generation equipment following the purchase of thirty-six Kohler-SDMO Rental Compact sets. This latest investment in Kohler-SDMO generators is said to be worth nearly £1 million (€1.17 million) and comprises a power band from 40 to 500kVA. The order was placed by Grant McIntosh, director and general manager, SLD Pumps & Power – Carrier Rental Systems UK Ltd, for delivery during December 2016. Mr McIntosh, director and general manager, SLD Pumps & Power, said, “We have, once again, selected Kohler-SDMO principally because they manufactured to a high standards making them robust and ideally suited for the hire market. The Kohler-SDMO Rental Compact generator range is Stage IIIA and DEFRA compliant which provides the right level of specification for use with our aggregate and utility customers.” IRN

Specific market Meanwhile, John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) will present its first engine of its new generator drive range in 2017, which is says is aimed at non-emissions regulated markets. The product will cover the 200kVa prime node. Arnaud Blanchard, market and product planner for the EMEA region, said, “Our OEMs and customers are asking for more cost-effective diesel engine solutions for power generation but won’t compromise on the quality, reliability or performance.” Generac Mobile Products has launched its MMG625VT2 mobile generator. The unit’s marathon brushless alternator delivers an output up to 629kVA, and is driven by an EPAcompliant Volvo US Tier 2 flex engine. The soundattenuated aluminium cabinet on the MMG625VT2 claims to keep sound levels to 83dB at 23ft during prime-power operation. It says the generator is designed with large doors and optional interior lighting for easy maintenance. UK’s JCB Power Products has celebrated ten years since it produced and sold the first JCB generator to coincide with the launch of the JCB engine. It is also a year since the acquisition of major UK producer of diesel generators Broadcrown Ltd was completed. The milestones were celebrated at JCB Power Products’ plant in Hixon, UK, and Mark Turner, group managing director – business operations, said, “This has been an exciting 12 months. When I look around the world where we now have generator businesses, it’s evident that JCB Power Products will be a big part of our future.” At the small end of the market, for very small gensets for private DIY or professional use – the kind of thing that would find its way into a tool rental operation – Chicago Pneumatic has expanded

Show guide O n 7 March, the largest construction show in the US kicks off in Las Vegas. Vegas ConExpo will boast more than 2500 exhibitors, spread across a vast 232000m2 of floor space. IRN will highlight some of the products for the rental market that will be on show at the exhibition. Traditional and longstanding elements of the show include asphalt, aggregates, concrete, earthmoving, lifting, mining and utilities. This year, however, ConExpo will give almost 7000m2 over to Tech Experience, an opportunity for construction professionals to see first-hand the way their industry will look in the future. From solar-powered roadways to drones and robots, the huge showcase will include the latest technology being used on today’s construction projects, as well as focusing on tech prototypes and possibilities for the future. As part of the Tech Experience, visitors to ConExpo will be able to get up close to the world’s first 3D printed excavator, a central element in the show’s ‘Imagine What’s Next’ theme. Visitors will also be able to see a second excavator being 3D printed during the five days of the show. Now, onto the products on show at the exhibition.

Earthmoving In the earthmoving sector, Caterpillar says it will present several innovative solutions available across its 14-model line of compact excavators, including its new M317F. It says the 300.9D Versatile Power System (VPS) with H25 Hammer represents an “ideal configuration” for indoor demolition applications. Another unique solution, it says, is the

Caterpillar will also be giving a live demonstration of skid steer loader line-of-sight remote control, from Cat Connect Technologies. Meanwhile, for the first time in the US, JCB will present its Hydradig 110W, which it says delivers on five important customer criteria: visibility, stability, manoeuvrability, mobility and serviceability. The machine promises enhanced levels of digging, lifting, loading and tool-carrying performance within urban construction, highway maintenance and municipal operations. JCB says Hydradig also offers an unmatched operator view around the machine, a low centre of gravity to allow stable lifting and excellent travel speeds, achievable 40kph travel > JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017 IRN

Across two booths at ConExpo, Doosan Construction Equipment will display a variety of earthmoving equipment, ranging in size from 6 to 54 tonnes, including its DL200TC-5 and DL250TC-5. However, the company has not revealed any new launches as of yet. Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) will also be at the show with 28 new machines in total. The company’s EC750E excavator is its latest from its JLG says a variety of its best-selling products including the SkyTrak 10054 telehandler will be on show at ConExpo

portfolio in North America, and Volvo CE will also showcase its never-before-seen wheel loaders. Also, major manufacturers Hitachi and Komatsu will be present at the show, but have yet to announce, at the time of printing, whether they will showcase any new products in Las Vegas.

Access equipment In the access sector, JLG will debut nine new products at ConExpo. The company has not released any details other than to say the units will be in the boom, scissor and telehandler categories. Additionally, JLG will preview “industry-leading” technologies in its Gold Lot booth (G3946.) A variety of the company’s best-selling products including the 400S and the SkyTrak 10054 telehandler, as well as the 1932R electric scissor lift will also be on display. All the way from France, Manitou Group will introduce more than 24 new equipment models at ConExpo. The Manitou Group will showcase nine new Gehl models in the skid loader, track loader, articulated loader, excavator and telescopic handler Atlas Copco will show its new XAS 400 cfm compressor, which features an intuitive PACE system that enables users to match air flow and pressure to their application needs

New reports available Specialist market intelligence and forecasting company Off-Highway Research will be exhibiting at ConExpo on stand C-22908 as part of the UK Pavilion. This year sees the company add to its portfolio of Multi-Client Studies, with new reports on Poland, South Korea and the global hydraulic excavator industry being launched. These are scheduled for publication in the second half of the year, and more details will be available at ConExpo. At 150-250 pages long, these reports are regarded as the definitive works on their selected subject. The exhibition will also see Off-Highway Research introduce enhanced services for its clients. In addition, the accompanying PC-download version of Off-Highway Research’s databases has been completely overhauled, which will be appreciated by clients that prefer this system for its offline working capabilities. Off-Highway Research has also rolled-out a new account administration site for its clients, which allows them to take fuller control of their subscriptions and allocate usernames and passwords to colleagues within their organisation. Visitors to the stand will have the opportunity to speak to Off-Highway Research’s consultants from China, Europe and India, gaining insights into key current trends for international construction equipment sales and production worldwide. OffHighway Research’s range of services includes databases and reports offering detailed countryby-country and product-by-product analysis of markets, and includes five-year sales forecasts. More information on the company is available at www.offhighway.co.uk

product lines; seven new Mustang models in the skid loader, track loader, articulated loader and excavator product lines; and more than five new Manitou models in the rotating telescopic handler, heavy duty telescopic handler and construction telescopic handler product lines. The Manitou, Gehl and Mustang display will be 6,000-square-feet and is located in the Gold Lot at G4165. Meanwhile, Skyjack, at Gold Lot booth G4452, will showcase its new prototype telehandler and articulating boom. The SJ1256 TH telehandler will make its debut at World of Concrete in Las Vegas, first. The unit will feature the Deutz TCD 3.6l powerplant, using DEF fluid but with no particulate filter for Tier 4 Final compliance. The machine will be heavily based on the SJ1056 TH, says Skyjack, with features such as the Skycoded control system, Flexcab for easily converting open cab units to closed cab and Readyhook yoke mounted rigging hook for effective handling of suspended loads. Other features will include a shared control systems, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic layout from the rest of the TH range, which Skyjack says ensures instant familiarisation for operators of other TH machines. Also new in 2017 will be the SJ85 AJ articulating boom, shown first at The Rental Show followed by ConExpo. The unit claims 85ft of platform height, a horizontal reach of 56ft, and up-and-over clearance of 34ft. Its dual capacity rating of 340/227kg and two to three people rating, aims to increase productivity and jobsite performance, says the company. US manufacturer Genie says it will show its enhanced GTH-844 rough terrain telehandler, which now comes with a 55kW, Tier 4 Final engine. The company says the telehandler is an ideal tool for loading and unloading, moving and placing and jobsite preparation and clean up.

APEX 2017 Meanwhile, in the other hall, the final stands for the APEX aerial platform show have been sold, meaning that the exhibition is full more than four and a half months in advance. Eighty-five companies have booked for the ninth APEX, which promises to be one of the most successful in the event’s history. Almost all the top manufacturers of access equipment will be present at APEX, including a wide variety of products, such as self-propelled machines, vehicle mounted platforms, hoists and mast climbers, low level platforms and access towers. There will also be used equipment specialists, rental software companies and other suppliers of ancillary products and services. Companies that have already booked stand space include JLG, Manitou, Genie, Teupen, Skyjack, Multitel Pagliero, Holland Lift, Snorkel, Altrex, Imer, Power Towers, Oil & Steel, Haulotte, CTE, Bronto, Ruthmann, Time International, Riwal, Socage, Airo Tigieffe, Palfinger, Dinolift, Hinowa and Teupen. Eight Chinese aerial platform manufacturers are also attending, which is a record for APEX. Tony Kenter, managing director of show organiser Industrial Promotions International (I.P.I.), said, “It is very pleasing to completely sell out the indoor and outside areas of APEX 2017 a full five months before the event. We are anticipating one of the most successful APEX shows ever, helped by the improved buying climate that can now be seen in Europe’s access rental industry. “Visitors to APEX, in addition to seeing over 85 exhibitors of access equipment, will also have the benefit of free access to the adjoining International Rental Exhibition (IRE), which is also now sold out. IRE will see more than 66 brands covering compact earthmoving equipment, gensets, rental software and much more, and represents an added bonus for APEX visitors.” The first seven APEX shows took place at the MECC in Maastricht and in 2014 it moved to the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam. APEX 2017 is organized by Industrial Promotions International BV (IPI) from Goor and is officially supported by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and by Access International. 32 RENTAL MINI EXCAVATORS SOFTWARE

Access all areas Software companies strive to make information available to all parties via one programme, in any location. Joe Malone reviews the latest software implemented by rental companies.

F

or rental companies to operate successfully, they rely on their information and data being stored safely, and being easy to access. Software companies have enhanced their programmes to ensure rental companies and their employees can operate quickly and efficiently, wherever they may be. In fact, Andrew Satterley, CEO of Australian software company Baseplan, believes mobility is the main trend in software. He said, “There is a very obvious and significant trend at the moment and that is around mobility. “Most companies now want to get their staff away from sitting behind terminals. They want to be able to provide a better service to their customers in their rental yards.” He added, “The whole concept of being able to use smart devices and be able to take the paperwork side out of the rental industry is a massive trend. It has become very significant in the US and Australia as it will soon in Europe.” A good example of this is Baseplan’s Field Service Management software, which allows field service personal to log and manage all service calls. The software includes live tracking of the service vehicle, electronic paperwork, and job dispatch and acceptance capability on the move. Mobile working also now means allowing rental customers to book rental online. Australian rental company Kennards Hire last year launched its online renting capability, which is fully integrated with the Baseplan ERP system that Kennards uses. That means processes such as reservations, contracts, extended rental, customer management, pre-billing, availability checking, payment and invoicing, all working seamlessly and in real-time. Another company at the forefront of this trend is Point of Rental Software. The company says its Syrinx software has developed a suite of apps to help drivers,

maintenance crews, and sales teams get business done while on the move. Syrinx Driver allows jobs to be sent directly from a Syrinx system to a driver’s smart phone or tablet device, and tasks from deliveries to depot transfers are also allocated via the software. It says the driver can access the tasks via the app, where they can transport and contract service jobs, upload photographs and capture signatures. In addition, it says, exception alerts will warn the office if a delivery driver selects equipment not detailed on a job, if equipment is not returned or if it is delivered or returned damaged. Meanwhile, the company’s Point of Rental Elite software is described as an enterprise resource planning (ERP) hire management software, and the company says the software fully integrates with

other applications that progressive hire companies rely on, such as SmartEquip, Rouse Analytics, Microsoft CRM, and AEMP Telematics.

Key trend Another key trend in the rental software industry is providing one programme which can be accessed by all parties, where information is available at the touch of a button. Pakistani rental company Allied Rental Modaraba – which is part of Allied Engineering and Services, Caterpillar’s dealer in Pakistan – has implemented Microsoft Dynamics AX and Sycor.Rental into its operations, which allows all its employees to access relevant information, according to German IT company Sycor. It says that the programmes have given the Caterpillar specialist a uniform database for decision making, streamlined and automated processes, and an improved quality of service. It took Allied Rental just six months to full integrate the two programmes, according to Sycor, and the benefits have meant the company can now “realise its potential” moving forward. All the company’s rental processes are now carried out through Sycor.Rental, including order processing, the scheduling of equipment and machines, and the billing of customers. The programme also supports the setup, conversion, and removal of machines and equipment, deliveries and returns, says Sycor. Murtaza Ahmed Ali , CEO of Allied Rental Modaraba, said the company – which has a total market capitalisation of almost €70 million – needed to expand its IT infrastructure, due to its “rapid growth” over the last ten years. He said, “The rapid growth of our vehicle and equipment fleet and therefore our company in the last few years prompted us to invest in our IT infrastructure and to look for a suitable ERP solution. “From our perspective, quickly having an overview of our entire business so that

reliable controlling mechanisms can be used is essential. Only then is it possible to identify and realize potential for improvements in the planning and operating processes.” Meanwhile, Marco Arndt , responsible for the worldwide partner business at Sycor, said, “The in-house IT team got themselves trained for implementing Microsoft Dynamics AX and performed exceptionally well, hence the implementation of Microsoft Dynamics AX along with Sycor.Rental taking just six months. “In co-operation with the in-house IT team, we implemented Sycor.Rental to support the rental process. We supported the planning, development, and testing of the functions required by the customer. Training for the Allied Rental employees was provided by us as well.” Mr Ali added that the programmes made decisions easier for its employees during every stage of the rental process. He said, “In addition, the harmonised database improves the quality of service in customer-related processes such as sales and scheduling. “We improved quality and efficiency in our processes, and customer satisfaction, while simultaneously reducing costs.”

KierDirect Hire wins award

HiGH Software says its DynaRent software gathers all information for projects, and acts as a central system for all employees to monitor, check and execute its activities.

Ground-breaking Meanwhile, Hire software expert MCS says it plans to launch a “ground-breaking”, embedded Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution, within its MCS-rm hire management system, at the Executive Hire Show 2017, which will take place in February. The company says its MCS-rm – which now combines CRM with hire management in a single rental software solution – is specifically designed to meet the needs of the rental industry. It says it helps hire companies to “nurture” their most valued client relationships, while maximising all sales opportunities. The company says its new software bridges the between various departments, and gap betw makes all al relevant information available to staff, helping them meet and exceed expectations. client exp It says that, having one application to look up relevant prospect or customer data, helps staff meet the Point of Rental Software says its Syrinx software app can be used by drivers when on the move

Rental software provider Wynne Systems worked with contractor Kier Group to develop KierDirect Hire procurement technology – a system that won the team category for Best Use of Technology at Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) Supply Management Awards 2016. The Best Use of Technology category rewards procurement and supply chain teams that have used technology in an innovative way to improve performance or efficiency. KierDirect Hire was developed as a solution to simplify the procurement process, reduce costs and improve supplier management. Kier joined forces with Wynne Systems and used the latter’s Job Site Portal and Supplier Connect platforms to build a better supply process. The companies said KierDirect Hire Portal allowed users to requisition equipment at the job site through a paperless process. It said job site personnel and project managers could access this portal through any mobile device or desktop to request equipment. The companies said,“Users search a webbased catalogue which guides them through a selection process to ensure they pick the correct product and accessories for completing the desired task. The companies added, “Then they can easily source suppliers and requisition equipment to be delivered or placed off hire when they complete the project.” Partnering with Wynne, Kier Group said it wanted an alternative to the traditional way of procurement that would lower overhead costs and improve supplier management, while simplifying the process. The 2016 CIPS Supply Management Awards were held on 14 September, 2016 in London, UK. > JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017 IRN

Chris Clarke, software development manager for MCS, said, “We redeveloped our CRM solution from the ground up including the CRM mobile interface, having taken considerable feedback from our customers via our independent user group.” Meanwhile, Dutch company HiGH Software says its DynaRent software gathers all information for projects, and acts as a central system for all employees to monitor, check and execute its activities. It says that information stored on DynaRent is tailored to each employee’s role to ensure jobs, resources and workflows are clear. The company says DynaRent is fully integrated with Dynamics 365 Operations and Microsoft Dynamics AX, which ensures all information is combined and processed directly from one source. inspHire’s Web Portal claims to allow customers to self-serve, giving them access to important information at all times.

The software also features capabilities such as Tom-Tom integration, cloud-based IoT management, and end-to-end mobile field service, which the company says provides customer satisfaction and a profitable order-to-cash cycle. DynaRent also offers Microsoft Power BI integration that is designed specifically for construction and other equipment-driven industries. The software is available through multiple channels, including the Microsoft Appsource, and offers flexible premise, cloud, and hybrid deployment options.

Enhancements There’s been enhancements made by InTempo Software to its two main rental technology products – InTempo Core and InTempo Enterprise ERP. The company says its InTempo Core software is straightforward and easy to use, for single or multi-location businesses engaged in any type of rental. It says new enhancements include expanded transaction processing capabilities and streamlined access to inventory and customer data. Finally, UK-based rental software company inspHire has launched its new inspHire Web Portal, which it says allows rental companies customers’ to self-serve, giving them access to important information at all times. It says the online product catalogue means customers can instantly see its contract history, business reports, invoices, test certificates and technical specifications of equipment. IRN

he two major rental shows across the globe in February – the UK’s Executive Hire Show (EHS) and The Rental Show in the US – will provide a taste of what is available for rental market in the respective markets. While the EHS is a much smaller show than The Rental Show, it will still host some 179 exhibitors, while The Rental Show will host 675 exhibitors. This year also sees changes at both shows, as the EHS founder Robert Applin retired from running the event in the autumn and transferred ownership to Hemming Group Ltd. Meanwhile, the American Rental Association’s Tony Conant replaces Christine Wehrman as CEO, after the latter retired in November last year. Upon his arrival, Conant said, “I welcome the opportunity to join such a dynamic organisation and staff team. “Hallmarks of the organisation are innovative Skyjack’s SJ843 TH telehandler was debuted last year at The Rental Show

I look forward to building upon that ARA legacy with the volunteer leaders and staff members.” In Orlando, a number of manufacturers will debut new or refreshed products at the event. Haulotte Group, for one, will showcase a large range of its equipment. The company’s newest models will include the STAR 20, featuring the latest design for the vertical mast. The unit will be equipped with the Haulotte ACTIV’Screen on-board diagnostic display panel, providing user-friendly information, system alerts and battery charge indicator, along with the popular AC Drive Motor System. Also on display will be its new trailer-mounted 6543A towable unit, which features 65ft of platform height, 43ft of horizontal outreach, and hydraulic outriggers, auto-platform levelling and an “industry-leading” outreach and working envelope, the company claims. It features an up-and-over height of 15ft, 11 inches. The company says the

hydraulic outriggers and automatic levelling allow operation in less than 30 seconds and can be towed by a standard half-ton truck. Skyjack will use The Rental Show to launch a brand new boom – the SJ85 AJ articulating boom lift. The company says that, following the successful launch of the SJ86 T (telescopic boom) in 2015, the SJ85 AJ will complete Skyjack’s boom line-up in the core 40ft, 60ft and 80ft boom classes. The SJ85 AJ claims 85ft of platform height, horizontal outreach of 56ft, up-and-over clearance of 34ft and a dual capacity rating of 750/500 pounds and two to three people. The boom will also have indicator lights on upper and lower controls show the applicable working zone and platform capacities. Like the SJ63 AJ, the new boom will have stowed compact dimensions, minimal tail swing and can get from ground to working at height in 60 seconds, the company says. It will also have SkyRiser, SPeedyReach, SkyCoded, AxleDrive and EasyDrive – all features unique to Skyjack. The unit will be available in the second quarter of this year. JLG, meanwhile, will showcase several products and aftermarket services. The company says its G5-18A super compact telehandler is suited for work in confined or congested spaces and any application with overhead height restrictions. It features a

The G5-18A features a maximum lift height up to 18ft, an extended outreach of 11ft, and a 5,500lbs maximum lifting capacity. The machine also offers a variety of attachments for versatility in handling jobsite challenges. JLG says its G5-18A is designed to provide enhanced reliability and serviceability. It features a Tier 4 Final Deutz engine, which claims higher levels of fuel efficiency and reduces the impact on the environment. In addition, it offers an optional reversing fan, which is a benefit in dusty environments, as it allows the operator to reverse the fan to “clean out” the radiator. Genie remained quiet on what it was launching at the show, but it did reveal it would showcase its GTH-844 telehandler, as well as the Genie Z-60/37FE boom. The Genie GTH-844 rough terrain telehandler now comes with a 55 kW, Tier 4 Final engine option. With 389Nm, this new GTH-844 telehandler is equipped with a high-torque version of the Deutz turbocharged 3.6l engine. The company says these features combine to offer similar torque as higher horsepower engine

packages with reduced maintenance needs, as there is no regeneration or diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).

The Executive Hire Show Turning our attention to the EHS, there will be many big names exhibiting, such as Atlas Copco, Bomag, Doosan Bobcat, JCB, Kubota, Manitou, Niftylift, Thwaites and Topcon. The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA), will meanwhile be promoting its ‘Stars of the Future’ award scheme, now in its fifth year, for trainees in the plant-hire industry. The association will also use the EHS to hold an ‘Open Meeting’ on the first morning. Product-wise, there’ll be plenty on show, including JCB’s new generation 4 and 5 tonne mini excavator models. The company’s stand will showcase the 48Z-1 and 57C-1 machines, which the company says brings improved performance, greater operator comfort and reduced running costs. The 2016 ERA Award winners

A new twist As we enter the year of the Awards, Murray Pollok outlines the two new categories for rental companies, as well as a new twist.

T

The Judging Panel As in previous years, the judging panel represents a mix of rental and equipment expertise, as follows (in alphabetical order): ■ Mark Anderson (Commercial Director, GAP Group, UK) ■ Pierre Boels (ERA President and CEO of Boels Rental, Netherlands) ■ Gerhard Gasser (Global Rental Business Manager, Hilti, Liechtenstein) ■ Murray Pollok (Managing Editor, IRN) ■ Juan José Torres (President, ASEAMAC & Managing Director, TST Torres Servicios Tecnicos, Spain) ■ Non-voting chair of judges: Michel Petitjean, Secretary General, ERA

he European Rental Awards, which coincide with the ERA annual convention and the International Rental Exhibition (IRE) and APEX aerial platform show, will take place on 3 May, 2017, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The awards, which are organised by IRN magazine and ERA, change every year according to the latest priorities and trends in the rental industry. This year sees the addition of two new categories – for digital innovation and for employer innovation – plus a change to the product of the year category, which will see the ERA’s Technical Committee playing a part in the judging process for the first time. The full list of award categories is as follows: ■ Small/medium sized rental company (€15m revenues) ■ Digital Innovation Award (new) ■ Employer Innovation Award (new) ■ Rental Safety Award ■ Rental Product of the Year ■ Rental Person of the Year ■ Lifetime Achievement Award Full information on each of the categories is given at the awards website: www.khl.com/rentalawards You can also download the entry forms at the site. The new Digital Innovation Award is designed to recognise innovation in a rental company in adapting to the digital business environment. Examples could include customer Apps, online

rental capability, digital rental marketing initiatives, mobile working technology, and the use of telematics systems. The Employer Innovation Award, on the other hand, aims to reward a rental company that has been successful in recruiting and retaining a high performing workforce. Judges will look for a company that has been able to attract high quality staff to the rental industry and who has been able to sustain low employee turnover rates. If you consider yourself to be a good employer, and can demonstrate that this is reflected in your business performance, then tell us how you did it. Another change this year is that in addition to the normal Rental Product of the Year award – decided by the award judges. The ERA’s Technical Committee will review all the product entries and present a separate award for the product that best complies with the committee’s Catalogue of Equipment Rental Industry Issues, Needs and Requirements. That document can be downloaded from the ERA website: please see the Technical Committee page at the ‘About us’ section of www.erarental.org. We welcome entries from any companies operating or selling into Europe, whether an ERA member or not. Please send all entries to: Joe Malone, Editor, International Rental News, E-mail: joe.malone@khl. com; Tel: +44 (0)1892 78611. Good luck! IRN

INDIA REPORT 43

Growing market The construction equipment market is growing quickly in India, and bC Expo India provided the perfect platform to showcase that. Joe Malone reports.

W

alking around the grounds of bC Expo India 2016 in New Delhi, there was a clear, positive vibe about the Indian construction market. Indeed, India has been the “shining light” on the Asian construction market overall, according to the thoughts of bC Expo India’s CEO Igor Palka in his opening ceremony speech. To put that into some perspective, Industry analysts Off-Highway Research said it expected construction equipment sales in India to grow 27% in 2016, with double-digit increases to follow in 2017 and 2018. It added that this should see sales volumes beat the previous record of 72197 units, which was recorded in 2011. Around 30000 visitors attended the show over the four days, which was around 4000 more than the show attracted two years previously. Mr Palka himself said he believed the growing number of visitors at the show justified its importance to the national and global construction markets. As far as rental goes, it’s a market very much at the beginning of its journey. In fact, Sakthi Kumar, managing director at Schwing Stetter India, told IRN that there were currently very few rental companies in India. He said the major problem was the lack of a management system in the country, adding that rental companies in India didn’t maintain their machines when they were on site, resulting in the contractors suffering the consequences. Interesting then, that SmartRentalz – a venture by Nido Machineries – has found its way into the market. The online equipment rental network company is relatively new to the industry, and provides an online platform for potential renters to find equipment with ease. The company – which exhibited at the show – said that it intended take the Indian equipment rental industry from a modest 8% to at least a global average of 50% within the next five years. Another sign that the rental market could accelerate in the country. Meanwhile, demand for new access platforms is growing from rental companies and end users in India, according to experienced journalist Partha Pratim Basistha. Mr Basistha says that the Indian aerial work platform market has been dominated by second hand equipment, mainly because the Indian AWP rental market, which also involves crane rental

companies and OEM distributors, has traditionally imported used equipment. However, he says the trend seems to be gradually reversing, as rental companies have been showing a preference for new units since the first quarter of 2016. He says there is also a trend by rental companies towards more articulated and telescopic booms, as they can be used across multipurpose applications, enabling them to fetch higher rental rates. Out of the 2016 market size of 260 machines, a bulk of those purchased were self-propelled boom lifts.

Palfinger's P240A aerial work platform at work on the Indian Hyderabad metro project

Long-term rental Rental companies are said to be placing new equipment on long-term rental in a big way in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, India’s car manufacturing hub. Similarly, Mr Basistha says that bC Expo India’s CEO Igor Palka said India was the shining light on the Asian construction market

rental agencies have increasingly been deploying new machineries on long-term rental agreements with major steel producers in Eastern India. Rental business is somewhat active in the market, says Mr Basistha, with the likes of Tamil Nadubased, AWP rental major Swastik Corporation buying up to 12 new units last year, consisting four JLG and six Genie 45ft boom lifts. It entered into a five-year rental agreement with Hyundai last year. Meanwhile, United Air Express, based in Jamshedpur, Eastern India also entered into a longterm rental agreement early in 2016 with Tata Steel. The rental company has deployed a range of its JLGs for maintenance of Tata’s flagship steel plant at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand state. It maybe early days, but there is a clear vision to expand rental in the Indian construction market. Watch this space. IRN Industry analysts Off-Highway Research estimated construction equipment sales in India grew 27% in 2016

INTERVIEW: ROUSE 45

Gary McArdle, Rouse services COO, speaking at the Access, Lift & Handlers Conference & Awards in Miami last October.

How long before Rouse Services brings its rental metrics benchmarking service to Europe? Murray Pollok spoke to the company’s Gary McArdle at the Rouse head office in Los Angeles.

Big numbers O

ne of the most interesting developments in the North American rental industry over the past 10 years has been the increasingly sophisticated way that rental companies are using data to manage their businesses. Not just their own data, but aggregate market data compiled by a number of independent sources, whether that’s the Rental Market Metrics and market studies created by the American Rental Association and its consultant IHS Markit, or the information collated and sold by Rouse Services, the former auction specialist that now has an impressive foothold in the US and Canadian rental markets. Rouse’s chief operating officer and executive vice president, Gary McArdle, talking to IRN in the company’s head office on Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles (overlooking the Hollywood Hills, no less), explains that the company is currently receiving information from around 77 US rental fleets on utilisation (financial and physical), rental rates, fleet age, and used equipment pricing, based on fleets valued at around US$30 billion, at original cost. He says there is an “addressable” total US fleet (that is, fleets for which accurate data is generated) of between $40 and $50 billion, with a further $5 billion in Canada and $20 to $25 billion in Europe.

Rouse’s US customers – which include United Rentals, Blueline, Herc Rentals, and 35 Caterpillar dealers – upload their fleet information to Rouse at regular intervals, allowing the company to data crunch an incredible amount of information. It presents aggregate data that can be analysed by product (down to small sub-categories) and by geographical region. Its Rental Metrics Benchmark Service also reports information in compliance with the ARA’s industry standard Rental Market Metrics.

Sharing data But why would big rental companies share their data (albeit hidden in aggregate totals)? “Clients want the competition to be rational players”, says Mr McArdle, who has been with Rouse for 16 years, “they want the industry to behave rationally, in investment in fleet and in the rates they put out” The Rouse data also, of course, allows the industry to track general, historic trends. For example, “Today, rental rates are 25% higher than the bottom [after the financial crash], and roughly 5% above the rates in 2006”, says Mr McArdle, although he adds, “on average, equipment now is 20% more expensive than in 2006, so there has been a decline in ROI.” One question that outsiders may ask is about

how the Rouse service can comply with competition regulations? Mr McArdle say that by law, they must have at least five sources of data for any territory in order to create sellable, aggregate information. That condition is met many times over in the US, and has just also been satisfied in Canada, where it now has five major rental players reporting to Rouse, allowing it to offer the service in the country (although not yet on a regional basis). Rouse is also operating in the UK, where it is working with around seven rental companies, mainly on equipment valuations. Will there be a time when Rouse offers a US-level service in Europe? Mr McArdle says Rouse is not in a position to do that yet, “We’re probably a minimum of 12 months away from looking at that. We’re now building in Canada and will continue our conversations with UK and continental clients and contacts over the next year.”

Multiple sources Meeting EU competition law would also be a prerequisite for a European launch. Mr McArdle says that in addition to getting multiple sources of data it can also build-in a delay to the release of information, and he also says that, ultimately, it might be that sharing pricing is a step too far for Europe, with fleet utilisation being the focus. Anyway, that’s for the future, for the present the focus remains in North America. The success of the business means that it now has around 50 analysts and IT specialists in the LA office – it was five people in 2000 – and its equipment appraisals service now covers $35 billion worth of fleet. As always with the US, the numbers are unfeasibly high; “We consume over $7 billion worth of used equipment sales transactions every year, from 150 companies”, says Mr McArdle, “That’s what drives the valuation engine.” That’ll be V8 supercharged. IRN ■ See also the Rouse column on page 53. This example of a Rouse data map shows rental growth for scissor lifts on a State level for the US. JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017 IRN

oon after receiving its first 33m narrow Holland Lift HL-330E14, Gunco’s Special Equipment division has taken ownership of a second unit. It brings the special equipment division’s fleet to 120 units, making it one of the largest fleet of niche access equipment available in Europe, says the company. The Netherlands-based Gunco Bv, a branch of TVH Group, is a major user of Holland Lift, owning almost all types of the manufacturer’s range. The relationship between Gunco engineers and Holland Lift service staff goes way back, said the company, which helps the development of safe and reliable machines. The HL-330 is the world’s highest narrow scissor spaces, with a width of 1.4m. It has a 33m working height and 600kg lifting capacity, with demand coming from large warehouses being built all over Europe due to the exponential growth in online shopping and the need to have logistic facilities close to the market. Powered by a 37hp Tier 4 Yanmar diesel engine, the unit directs 30hp to the attachment, allowing the machine to be used on challenging tasks with attachments including trenchers and augers. “Listening to the customer, incorporating their feedback, and improving productivity and ROI is a critical component of all new product designs,” said Chris Thompson, Ditch Witch product manager, compact equipment.”

exhaust emissions. The machine also features a new 2-pump load sensing hydraulic system, which Kuobta says improves the overall smoothness of operations when using the front attachments, regardless of load size. It added that hydraulic oil is allowed to flow according to the specific range of the operator’s lever motion, which further reduces fuel consumption and delivers greater operating performance. In addition, it claims, long reach and close retraction are achieved, while its compact front swival radius makes turning and lifitng operations simple. Kubota says maintenance is a straightforward job, with its triple opening bonnet, meaning all three access panels can be open at the same time. Dave Roberts, managing director at Kubota UK, said, “At Kubota, we are constantly striving to improve the performance and efficiency of our machinery as we know this is what end-users rely on

EneRacer from Bosch Bosch says it has “answered the need” for stronger and longer lasting battery performance in high-load applications with its new GBA 18 V 6.3 Ah Professional EneRacer. The company says that, until now, cordless tools have previously been unable to provide enough power and runtime, but its new product offers 80% higher power output than its previous models and increases runtime by up to 90%. Other developments which make the product unique includes advanced cell technology. This technology allows more power to pass from cell to tool, increasing its power output. Also, Bosch says the battery’s power rails have been designed for greater efficiency in carrying high currents in high-load situations. Bosch adds that, with dimensions of 114 x 76 x 64mm, and weighing 0.8kg, its new product is the market’s smallest and lightest high-power battery. As part of the Bosch Flexible Power System, it is 100% compatible with all 18V Bosch Blue Li-Ion tools. Bosch’s GBA 18 V 6.3 Ah Professional EneRacer promises 80% higher power output and a 90% increase in runtime

to be able to complete their jobs effectively. “The introduction of the new KX080-4a excavator not only provides our customers with the strongest performing machine we have to offer, but one that also meets all the latest emissions standards.” IRN Kubota's has enhanced its popular KX080-4, 8 tonne mini excavator.

Bobcat launches telehandler range A

new range of rigid frame telehandlers has been launched by Bobcat for the construction and rental industries. Manufactured at the company’s plant at Pontchâteau in France, Bobcat now offers a choice of 11 new telehandler models covering maximum lifting capacities between 2.6 tonnes and 4.1 tonnes, with lifting heights from 6m to 18 m. For markets such as Europe, where emissions are highly regulated, the range has the new Bobcat D34 Stage IV/Tier 4 Final compliant diesel engine, developed in-house. The models also have a new naming system for capacity and lifting height: TL26.60 and TL30.60 compact telescopic loaders; TL35.70, T35.105, T35.105L and T36.120SL iddle lift telehandlers; T35.130S and T35.140S rental industry-oriented telehandlers; and T35.130SLP, T41.140SLP and

T40.180SLP high lift telehandlers The compact D34 engine is combined with a new low profile engine hood to improve visibility on the engine side, which is important for material handling applications. It is available in two different sizes: A 55.2 kW model, designed for cost-efficient operation, without Diesel Engine Fluid (DEF) injection and involving only a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) as an after-treatment technology. The 74.5 kW model is for heavy operations, with DOC and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with DEF injection after-treatment technologies. The new generation telehandlers incorporate other new features such as an automatic parking brake with an intuitive operation similar to those used in the automotive industry.

Already available as standard on the TL26.60, TL30.60 and TL35.70 models covering lifting heights up to 7m, Bobcat’s ECO fuel saving mode is also now incorporated on the larger models with lifting heights up to 10m and above. The new ECO system has a press-button start on the dashboard and maintains optimum hydraulic performance without using the engine’s full power. IRN

US-based manufacturer ASV has launched its new large-frame, radial-lift Posi-Track RT-75 compact tracked loader, which it says features highly efficient hydraulics and a high capacity cooling system. The company also claims that its patented Posi-Track undercarriage provides the industry’s highest ground clearance, lowest ground pressure, best traction and longest track life, which it says makes the compact machine “ideal” for customers.

enerac Mobile Products has launched its first LED light tower, which it says offers alternative features and benefits. Its new MLT6SMD LED light tower is a 6kW unit powered by a Tier 4 ultrafuel-efficient ECOSpeed engine that operates in multiple speeds. Generac says this allows it to have a runtime of up to 215 hours on a single tank and a service interval of 750 hours. The light tower has a temperature management system, which ensures the engine maintains proper operation regardless of its load. It also features a 240W instant-on Generac LED lights with 88,000 total lumen output and a standard Power Zone controller with automatic start and stop selections and dusk-to-dawn photo sensor operation. Dave McAllister, director of

product management for Generac Mobile Products, said, “Our international design and engineering teams have collaborated to provide what we think are the best light towers on the market. “The Generac LED lights are not only bright and energy efficient, they are extremely durable. Because of the modular design, individual lights will still continue to operate even after significant damage. We are so confident about the robust nature of these lights that we put a 5-year limited parts warranty on the components, modules, drivers and cords.” IRN

ERA NEWS 51

Focus on people at the next ERA Convention The European Rental Association (ERA) announces its 4th Annual Convention, taking place from 2 to 4 May.

A

fter celebrating its 10th anniversary in Stockholm, Sweden, last year, the ERA now begins another decade. Another board is also in place, bringing new ideas to the table. The major event of the year will be the Annual Convention, which will take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, at the RAI, Amsterdam’s Congress Centre. Another event will be the International Rental Exhibition (IRE), as well as the International Access Platform Exhibition (APEX). The convention will be hosted in a brand new building near the exhibition halls, which will make it easier for the participants to visit the exhibition at any time. The Convention will be organised to ensure rental companies and exhibitors can easily laise. Alike IRE and APEX, the Convention will start on 2 May and will end on 4 May.

Considering the outcomes of the workshops at the last ERA Convention and the discussions in the ERA’s committees and future group, the ERA board decided that the next Convention would focus on people. The rental industry is about equipment but, most of all, it is about services and, if the rental business doesn’t spend some time understanding how people are evolving and will evolve in the coming years, the rental business will not be ready for the future. A better understanding of people will help improve relations to customers, and will also help secure talent for the rental industry. In fact, many European rental companies insist it is difficult to recruit people, and also keep the ones they want. Following discussions with partners and stakeholders of the construction business, it appears the problem does not just lie in the rental industry, but in the construction industry as a whole. Consequently, the next Convention of the ERA will be centred on securing talent for the future. Among other working groups and presentations, the ERA is preparing a panel which will include human resources managers from rental companies as well as professional experts on HR. In order to prepare for this panel, the ERA has launched a research project alongside a business psychologist/sociologist expert on HR. In the coming weeks, this expert will meet with several HR directors or representatives of HR departments from rental

companies, and will learn about the latest developments in terms of hiring, training and career development for the younger generation. The selected rental companies represent the different market areas and cultures of the rental industry in Europe. Other lectures during the Plenary Session on 3 May will focus on securing talent for the future. Other speeches will address different topics of major interest for the European rental business. On 3 May, the European Rental Awards will also take place at the RAI and will reward eight companies or rental representatives. The deadline for entries is Wednesday 25 January. To download the entry forms, please visit KHL’s website, www.khl-group.com/events/rentalawards. On 4 May, the ERA will organise three more workshops, following their success in the previous Convention. The objective of these workshops is to have an interactive session between the participants with the support of the moderators and to learn about the needs of the rental business from the members directly. IRN ■ The registration to the Convention and to the awards dinner is now opened, http://erarental. org/en/events/convention/ire-2017-and-eraannual-convention. ■ For sponsoring opportunities of the Convention, please consult the ERA secretariat, [email protected]. ■ For sponsoring opportunities of the awards dinner, please contact KHL, [email protected].

A better understanding of people will help improve relations to customers, and will also help secure talent for the rental industry. JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017 IRN

Metric trends UK market update UK CONSTRUCTION UK construction product sales have increased for fifteen consecutive quarters, according to the January 2017 Construction Trade Survey published by the Construction Products Association (CPA) with 78% of heavy side firms and 75% of light side firms reporting increases year over year. Firms are less optimistic going into 2017 due to falling sterling pricing causing increased pricing pressure, coupled with increased costs in fuel, energy and raw materials. In December, new construction orders hit their highest point since January of 2016, led by residential building activity and civil engineering projects. However, 2016 was down 23% in new orders from 2015. Tim Moore, senior economist at IHS Markit, said, “December’s survey data confirmed a solid rebound in UK construction output during the final quarter of 2016. All three main areas of construction activity have started to recover from last summer’s soft patch, but in each case growth remains much weaker than the cyclical peaks seen in 2014.” There continues to be a general level of uncertainty in the overall economic and political sector. There is also a level of concern around if and when the London property bubble will burst as it is starting to wane a bit after a historic period of highs. These uncertainties along with the overall economic slowdown have led market research firm Leading Edge to slash their predicted increase in construction output in 2017 to 1.7% from an earlier prediction of 3.5%.

With nearly 100 years of industry experience, Rouse Services offers business intelligence backed by constantly updated aggregation of equipment values and rental metrics. Rouse Analytics provides monthly comparisons of pricing and key performance metrics to local market industry benchmarks and tracks in excess of US$500 million (€447 million) of revenue monthly with 52 clients across more than 80 markets. ■ For more information go to: www.rouseservices.com

US market metrics The November 2016 Rouse Value Index for used equipment prices was 42.6, flat for the third consecutive month. After sixteen consecutive month of declines through July, values finally leveled off. The November value was down 9.3% from the mid2015 peak of 46.9, and is below the April 2007 peak of 43.3. However, the November 2016 Rouse Value Index remains 43.4% higher than the prior trough period of 29.7 in June 2009. November auction sales of rental and construction equipment tracked by Rouse (the above Auction Volume and Recovery Rate chart is US auction sales only) averaged 2.8% lower than Rouse October Forced Liquidation Value (FLV) values. Units sold in October (3,400 units sold at 46 separate auction sales) represented a combined FLV (as of September 30th) of US$81.6 million (€76.80 million) and generated US$79.4 million (74.73 million) of gross auction proceeds. Categories of equipment prevalent in general rental fleets (for example, small- and mid-sized earth moving and aerial equipment) averaged 0.5% lower than October FLV values. Heavier equipment categories (for example, large earth moving and mining equipment) averaged 4.4% lower than September FLV values. As of September 2016, physical utilization has declined year over year for 20 consecutive months. The annual pattern is reflective of the seasonality of equipment rental which peaks towards the end of summer with troughs typically at the beginning of the year.

People news ■ Wacker Neuson’s Jan Willem Jongert, member of the executive board responsible for sales, has stepped down from the role over differences of opinion about the implementation of the group’s existing sales strategy. The German construction machinery manufacturer’s supervisory board and Jongert said the decision to split was “by fully amicable and mutual consent”. Mr Jongert took up his role on the executive board on April 1, 2016, and withdrew from this position on January 9. Alexander Greschner (46) has succeeded Jongert as CSO (chief sales officer) of Wacker Neuson. He was previously managing director at the German production company for light equipment, headquartered in Reichertshofen near Munich. He spent three years in this role, and Wacker Neuson said that beyond that, he played a key role in successful groupwide sales projects.

■ Finish rental company Cramo has announced the appointment of its new chief financial officer, Aku Rumpunen. Having worked as interim chief financial officer for the company since mid-August this year, Mr Rumpunen officially began his role on 21 December. He has previously held the roles of senior vice president, group business control and was a member of the group management team at Cramo. Leif Gustafsson, president and CEO of Cramo, said, “I am very pleased to appoint Aku Rumpunen as new chief financial officer of the company. “During his time as interim chief financial officer, he has driven our strategic financial targets in an excellent way. He has played a key role in developing Cramo’s performance management model and I am looking forward to continuing working closely together striving to achieve Cramo’s long-term targets.”

Fuchs urges sampling Sampling oil regularly and correctly can help to mitigate the risk of problems in off-highway vehicles before they become serious, according to lubricant manufacturer Fuchs Lubricants. Andy Brown, technical manager at Fuchs Lubricants, said sampling could help reduce costs by unearthing issues with a vehicle before it breaks down completely. He added that oil samples must be taken correctly in order to produce the most accurate results. The UK-based company offers a cent sampling service, which it said produced clear, precise feedback in the form of graphs and reports along with suggestions for remedial action. The company said its management tool indicated wear trends, additive levels and sources of contamination. Mr Brown added, “Off-highway vehicles need to be ready to use when you need them otherwise you run the risk of costly downtime. “The way sampling is done is massively important and it’s the bit that everyone gets wrong. Sampling is very much worth doing, and it’s worth doing right.” Andy Brown

Ahem Chile officially opens Snorkel and Xtreme Manufacturing has officially opened Ahern Chile, the new sales and service provider for the companies in Latin America. Based in Santiago, Ahern Chile is the latest location in the Ahern International distribution group, that also includes Ahern Australia, Ahern Japan, Ahern Deutschland and Ahern Canada. They are focused on distribution of Snorkel and Xtreme Manufacturing products, as well as spare parts and technical service. The Ahern International businesses do not offer equipment rental. Led by Brody McFarland, VP of sales for Latin America for Xtreme Manufacturing and Snorkel, Ahern Chile made its first entry into the Latin American market at ConExpo Latin America in October 2015, showing a range of Snorkel AWPs and Xtreme telehandlers. Mr McFarland then appointed Nicolas Pacifico as regional general operations manager in December 2015. Mr Pacifico has a strong background in aerial work platform sales in the region, having previously led the sales operations in Chile for Haulotte. This was followed by the appointment of Andre Mendonca as regional sales manager for Argentina, and Carlos Vegar as Parts Manager. Mr McFarland said, “Chile is the perfect location to establish our distribution for Latin America. This is a stable market, with an open trade environment that makes it easy to do business. Our investment in this market has been very well received by customers so far, and we have many possibilities for expanding our business here into sectors beyond rental, including industrial and mining.”

■ Jur Kamsteeg has taken over full responsibility for IPAF’s Benelux region, IPAF reported. Kamsteeg replaces operations manager Hans Aarse. Mr Kamsteeg will continue to develop and support the successful work of the team that was started by Aarsemore than a decade ago. Additional support to the region will be provided by new team member Corinne Kooijman, who will be based in the Benelux IPAF office. Kooijmanwill provide support for IPAF training centres and membership enquiries, as well as with events and administration. In his new role as market development support, Mr Aarse will assist IPAF in the development of membership and training in Eastern Europe.

■ Ruthmann has expanded its service team in the UK by appointing Neil Congreve as a new service technician. Congreve works for Steve Llyod of Llyod Access, which is a Ruthmann service provider. “The increase in service personnel can be attributed to the upsurge in Steiger work platforms operating in the UK,” Ruthmann said. “The demand for Ruthmann Steiger models – in all series – has risen steadily over the past several years. With this expansion in service, Ruthmann has demonstrated once again that its customers come first. Ruthmann customers can rely on competent and dependable after-sales service anytime and anywhere.” JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017 IRN
