AP STUDIO ART and PORTFOLIO PREPARATION CLASSES SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS 2016 If you are getting this packet, then you have summer art work. Thanks for approaching this in a serious manner. Thanks for NOT waiting until the last minute to create it! (You didn’t, did you?) Summer is a big stretch of time, and it will be important to take advantage of the long days and extra hours you will have, before they are a memory. So I am giving you 4 activities to do. Each one is equally important. Some will take more time than others, but all need to be accomplished to the best of your ability, please. You are being given some background information, but might also want to do some additional investigation on your own. Do the preliminary preparation, please. I have prepared that to help you do a good job. Going through the Power Points THOUGHTFULLY, as well as doing some additional research on your own, will make you work so much richer, and will probably earn you a better grade. After all, you will also be expected to enter into the class discussions, and the more you know, the more you can contribute (also enhancing your grade) and the more you will get out of it. Take responsibility for your growth as an artist. I can teach you, and guide you. But I cannot force you to make good art. Your work will improve with practice. Your work will be better if you make it more personal. Your work will be easier to talk about if your give it some thought. All of those things will go a long way to making you a better artist. So you will have four activities to complete. Please do all four. Get yourself a sketchbook, if you don’t already have one. Start entering anything and everything you might want to refer to, as well as any sketching you care to do. If you take the time to create a meaningful sketchbook, you will be very glad you did. In the meantime, the assignments are below. ALL ARE DUE THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS. Please bring them in and store them in the classroom IN YOUR PORTFOLIO. Everyone is expected to have a portfolio! Enjoy your summer! Make some very good art!!

(* Keep reading. There is a whole packet of stuff here!)

ASSIGNMENT ONE:

Elements and Principles of Design Photo Assignment Elements of Design SHAPE * LINE *COLOR * FORM * VALUE * SPACE * PROPORTION * TEXTURE * MOVEMENT

Principles of Design HARMONY * BALANCE * DOMINENCE* REPITITION* RHYTHM * CONTRAST * UNITY Works of art can contain some combination of these attributes, or can focus specifically on one. Here’s the difference between the 2 - Elements and Principles: Elements are specific characteristics that can be easily seen. Color, three dimensional qualities, lightness or darkness, size, as well as the others in this category, are all characteristics that can be isolated, recognized and analyzed. Principles are less obvious. They rely on the use of multiple ELEMENTS in order to be effective. In short, PRINCIPLES are a result of how ELEMENTS interact. In the case of CONTRAST, a painting could be monochromatic with shades of blue and then employ a bright orange color as a way to create a focal point. That would definitely be contrast, based on contrasting colors on the color wheel. In the case of DOMINANCE, varying the PROPORTION of objects within the composition can determine which objects receive the most visual emphasis. A larger object among smaller ones can appear more important.

Sometimes it’s not about creating differences. Using soft pastel COLORS throughout a collage would create a piece that had a feeling of calmness or HARMONY. Focusing on a theme such as shells, or birds and creating a piece using that theme would be a way of creating UNITY. SAVE THESE PAGES – PLACE THEM IN YOUR JOURNAL WE WILL BE DISCUSSING YOUR WORK IN REFERENCE TO THEM YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DO WRITINGS THAT REFLECT ON THESE AS WELL IN YOUR JOURNAL, OR ON THE BLOG. ASSIGNMENT: Using a digital camera take images that are good examples of each ELEMENT and PRINCIPLE, (then save two examples of each on a flash drive). This will be a minimum of 14 images. You may need to shoot more images in some cases, to get really good examples. Good cropping is essential to your success in each photo!!! ASSIGNMENT TWO: You need to spend some time, reading about Christo and his wife Jean Claude. They worked as a team and their work is very well known. They have a unique way of doing their art and it impacts many people, due to its incredible size. Find some articles on his life and what he thinks and hopes to accomplish. You will be amazed at what you learn.

Guidelines for the Christo & Jeanne-Claude Wrapping Piece The purpose of this art making experience is to go through a process of critical thinking. You will be reflecting on objects that have a significant influence in your life. You will also be making some choices regarding visual impact of the wrapped object and psychological connections between the objects and its wrappings. This piece will be constructed based on your own personal judgments. Your piece does not have to look “correct” to anyone else but yourself. But you can’t just throw anything together!

As you should understand by now, Christo chose specific sites for his installations based on the impact they would make for those who encountered them. He also carefully chose how to drape the structures, what to wrap them with, and what to use to hold the wrappings in place. Your piece will be much more personal, in that it will not affect large groups of people. It is instead a reflection of the influences in your life. DIRECTIONS: Choose an object that has a meaningful impact on your life. Think about how that object affects you on a regular basis. Think about how it influences your thoughts, and feelings. Now think about what you could use to wrap it. The wrapping should be directly related to the object and the meaning the object has in your life. Find a way to wrap the object that allows it to still be seen, to some degree. In other words, the object should not be completely covered. It should still be recognizable. Put the wrapping around it in such a way that it will remain intact for a period of time. Think about how you will secure all the materials. All the details of what you choose to put this together will either contribute to, or detract from, the final effect. In other words if something like tape is used, then it should either be hidden, or be seen for a reason.

DRAWING: This drawing is to be an observational study. What that means is that you will be looking at the actual object you have constructed, and do a detailed drawing of it. You may use any kind of medium to do the image. It can be pencil, pen, marker, charcoal, paint, oil pastels, soft pastels, or some other medium. The purpose is for you to INFUSE the drawing with some emotion. The emotion should be dictated by your personal feelings about the object and its role in your life. If you feeling are soft and warm and fuzzy, then the drawing should show us that. If your reaction is one of confusion, chaos, conflict, or stress, the image you make should convey those feelings. The colors you choose, the marks you make, and the overall appearance should be a strong indication of your connection to the subject of your work. I would like for you to work larger than life. You may also draw the object from more than one perspective (or view) all in one image. So the finished piece should be about 10 x 14, or so. Make it interesting!

WRITING: You are also being asked to write an explanation of what you have done. The writing should consist of 2 topics: the object and the wrapping. You will write an explanation of the meanings and influences the object and its wrapping, have in/on your life.

Please organize your writing in this way: Begin with a paragraph about the wrapped object – what it is; why you chose this thing; what kind of an influence it has on your life. Describe what it would mean to you to be without it. The second paragraph should explain the significance of the wrappings. Tell me in what you have chosen to wrap your object in and why. Explain how the object and its wrappings are connected symbolically, emotionally or otherwise? Paragraph three should be about your reaction to what you have designed, both 3dimensionally, and in your image. So in other words, what do you think/feel about your object and how it is wrapped? How do you view the object now that it is altered? How long did you keep it wrapped? How did that impact your life since it was different? Also, talk about how your drawing appears to you. Do you feel it was successful? Does it illustrate your emotions effectively about the object? As you are writing keep in mind that you will not be asked to share anything personal that you do not want to share. What you write can be for my eyes only, but I hope you will share it with the class. When you give your oral explanation in class, you may however share only what you feel comfortable sharing with everyone.

PRESENTATIONS: We will gather in class soon after returning from summer, and present our pieces to the class. Basically, you will talk about your choices (the object and its wrapping) and tell us why you chose to design your piece the way you did.

ASSIGNMENT THREE: A SELF-PORTRAIT IN THE STYLE OF VAN GOGH You will be asked to create a self-portrait that is in the style of Vincent Van Gogh. I have copied a Power Point presentation to this packet. Please go through it and think carefully about what it is telling you. It has suggestions for all kinds of things like: backgrounds, colors, application of materials onto the surface, composition, and many other topics.

When planning this piece, please make some thumbnail sketches in your sketchbook, as well as any other additional things you may need, such as color samples, images, and/or written thoughts. You can do some thumbnails to help you work out the composition. Here is the Power Point:

Take a good look at the images contained in this document and try to see and understand what the image is saying. Then try to design a portrait of yourself, using the techniques pictured, but not the compositions shown. Feel free to add whatever props you like, to help explain who you are. Your portrait should be about 11 x 14 in size. Be sure you work on something heavy enough to support the materials (supplies) you are using to make the image. You may create a “warm”colored or a “cool” – colored portrait. Or you can use a variety of colors, or just B&W.

ASSIGNMENT FOUR: Your last assignment is a fun one! You are being asked to create an “avatar” which represent your identity. It can be a photo, a collage, a drawing, or whatever fun thing you can think of to represent yourself. You will be likely using it this year, so make it something you will want to see. I had to do this for a few different applications, so I have a couple. I think they’re fun. Expect to be asked to explain your choice to the class. Make sure you save it in digital form to your flash drive. It should be in a file that is set to 72 dpi and from about 2x4 to about 4x6 inches in width x height. This is one of my own favorites! I still use this one sometimes. It is on my Schoology page right now.
