What is AntiqueWeek's Travel Guide to Antique Shops & Malls? The AntiqueWeek Travel Guide to Antique Shops & Malls is distributed in early April, featuring antique shops and malls, collectibles dealers, and antique shows. Each state covered is divided into sections. Using road maps, town names are highlighted to show which areas have antique shops. Following the map is a listing (by town) of those shops, and corresponding display ads. The AntiqueWeek Travel Guide to Antique Shops and Malls publishes two editions, a Central and Eastern edition. If you're interested in advertising in next year's shop guide, call us at (800) 876-5133. The Central Edition covers the states of Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, western Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. C E N T R A L
The Eastern Edition covers the states of Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, eastern Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. Alabama city embracing its broad musical culture F LORENCE, Ala. (AP) – John Glenn could be using the nearly 40 feet of wall space inside Discount Dan’s Home Center for more home improvement products, but he’s not. Instead, the space is reserved for glass cases filled with Muscle Shoals music memorabilia, including signed guitars, rare photographs, album covers, gold records and other items related to the area’s rich musical heritage. “We’re embracing the music culture,” Glenn said. Discount Dan’s isn’t alone. A number of local businesses and public buildings have displays on the Shoals’ musical heritage that serve as unofficial tour stops for residents and visitors. In Muscle Shoals City Hall there is a glass case filled with memorabilia, and the Northwest Alabama Regional Airport plans to build displays so that one of the first things visitors see involves Shoals music. Ye Ole General Store, a downtown fixture since 1947 across from the Florence Post Office, is decorated with framed photos that owner Gordon Glasscock started putting up after becoming interested in the music scene a few years ago. “I figured out there were people who live here that didn’t know about the people who recorded here,” Glasscock said. “I started reading as much as I could and researching on the Internet.” There are several photos of The Rolling Stones taken by Swampers bassist David Hood when the Stones
recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in 1969. Glasscock’s favorite is a blackand-white shot of Linda Ronstadt when she recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound in the early 1970s. He credited the Muscle Shoals documentary film for helping spread the word about the area’s music heritage, where it came from and who was involved in it. The photos on display at Ye Ole General Store have captions that identify the artists in the photos, the location and the date, if it is known. Glasscock said many of the photos were provided by local music historian and photographer Dick Cooper and by Tommy Wright, who photographed many artists who recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound. Glasscock, whose parents ran the store for 30 years before he took over after moving back from New Orleans in 2005, said he’s had many people from out of state and out of the country visit the store and check out the photos. “Last week I had some people from Oregon and Washington state,” he said. He also had some recent visitors from Sweden. At Discount Dan’s, Glenn said the idea to do something unique for the Sheffield store was discussed before the store opened about two years ago. “We were trying to think of things that would embed us more in the community,” he said. “Look at the number of people who are tied to the music industry in our region. Every
20th customer that comes in is a musician.” The display runs along a wall at the front of the store and includes photographs of local artists like Walt Aldridge and Travis Wammack, songwriters Billy Lawson and Chris Tompkins, a Shoals native who now resides in Nashville. There is a Lynyrd Skynyrd road case covered in stickers and a red electric guitar signed by members of the band. Glenn said local artists provided some of the items, as did Cooper. Songwriter Mark Narmore provided several items as did Peanutt and Charlene Montgomery, who co-authored a book about their relationship with the late country legend George Jones. Peanutt Montgomery was a studio guitarist at Fame and wrote numerous songs for Jones. He and his wife own two businesses, Hobby Land and Charlene’s Variety, in downtown Sheffield that feature a variety of memorabilia from the early days of the local music scene. Another large collection of photographs hangs in Swampers Bar & Grill at the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa in Florence. Swampers has photos from the heyday of Muscle Shoals music throughout the restaurant and lounge. Nearly every available inch of wall space is filled with framed color and black-and-white photos. New antique dealer ‘grows’ out of 9-to-5 job By Alice Otten Versluys Five years ago, Coloradan Diane Sanders said she was clueless about the antique mall trade. But needing something in her life to be excited about, she first rented a space at Teacups to Tables, a flea market and antique mall in Longmont, Colo., about twenty miles north of Denver. Initially Sanders wasn’t searching for a business, although she’d always dreamed of one day owning a shop of her own. “Early on I discovered the antique business was something I could love and be passionate about,” Sanders said. “On the other hand, shoddy business practices at my then current office job drained me.” Sanders said she wanted to quit her office job, but she didn’t dare dream renting booth space in an antique mall could produce enough income to take the place of her full time position as a pediatrics office receptionist. However while giving her first booth at Teacups a fresh coat of blue paint, a second space opened up next to it. Sanders thought she barely had

enough merchandise to fill one space and she worried about how she’d fill a second space. But her husband Scott Sanders, an entrepreneur, encouraged her to take the additional booth. Hesitant, she agreed and painted that space blue too. Nearly overnight Sanders became a student who needed to learn the business quickly. At the onset she had decided the business must reach beyond hobby level in order to replace her office job income. “I had real bills,” Sanders said. “I gave myself a six-month learning curve if this venture was going work.” Teacups to Tables customers responded positively to Sander’s booth displays; merchandise started selling quickly. And when her husband witnessed his wife’s healthy sales and the potential for her new business, he got involved. The Sanders began attending antique auctions, estate sales, and yard sales together. They also jumped onto Craigslist and eBay to find additional furniture to stock the booths. Within two whirlwind years Sanders acquired six booths in various antique malls she discovered along Colorado’s Front Range. And for the most part it seems the business came to her. “My husband and I never aggressively pursued the business,” Sanders said. “Instead, we kept adding spaces because Scott kept finding more furniture to sell. Whenever we went to an antique mall to address a need, a space presented itself to us.” Five years later (and experiencing typical business-building bumps and scrapes along the way) Sanders now owns Eclectic by Design where she specializes in French, English and Early American antiques, plus country primitives and new vintage-style home décor. The business grew so quickly that Sanders had trouble keeping up with the demand. A history buff like Sanders, her husband began buying in earnest and began researching items they located on their hunts. See Color ado Dealer on page 16

Muscle Shoals From Page 7 There are also six acoustic guitars that are covered with signatures of Muscle Shoals artists and musicians with connections to the area. On another wall behind a small stage where local musicians frequently play are several mounted T-shirts from Fame and Muscle Shoals Sound. “From the get-go we were looking for a way to showcase that story and introduce the story of Muscle Shoals music to the 100,000 guests that go through the hotel each year,” General Manager Larry Bowser said. “To me, our music history and heritage is one of the greatest attractions the Shoals has.” Another nod to the Shoals musical legacy are suites named after The Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Sam Phillips, and the Father of the Blues, W.C. Handy. Phillips and Handy were both born in Florence. In Sheffield, the Jameson Inn is
building a collection of photos and memorabilia in the Singing River Bar & Grill. The lounge also features a weekly Shoals songwriters showcase hosted by local blues guitarist Max Russell. On Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals, The Trojan House began embracing the Shoals Music scene when it opened about five years ago. “We’re just big music lovers,” co-owner Louisa Oswalt said of herself and her husband, Tommy. “There’s so much music history here.” Not to be left out, the Muscle Shoals City Hall has a large wood and glass display case featuring several pieces of Muscle Shoals music history, including several Fame label 45 rpm records, photographs of Fame founder Rick Hall with the late Duane Allman and the Osmonds. There are also several pieces of old WLAY radio memorabilia. There are also photos and other memorabilia at Champy’s Chicken in Muscle Shoals, Counts Brothers Music in Muscle Shoals and the FlorenceLauderdale Tourism office.

Colorado Dealer From Page 9 “We found an incredibly heavy cast iron bakers rack for just $179,” Sanders said. “There was a foundry mark on the bottom which my husband researched. We learned the rack was an antique that had been forged in France. We put $3,800 on it. When you only pay for $179 for a piece, you have a lot of room to move on a price.” That first year Sanders, who had a daughter in college, made no money. But eight months after her start at Teacups to Tables, Sanders opened a booth at The Brass Armadillo, an antique mall in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. She soon added booths in Littleton, Arvada, and two in Lafayette, her hometown. She recently dropped one space that didn’t work out, but added another at Hampden Street Antique Market in Denver. “Unlike my office job, working this new business has brought me a lot of joy,” Sanders said. “The business was affirming from the get go. It was something I could be good at, something I discovered I was good at.” In addition to the mix, Sanders attributes much of her business success to her husband’s savvy ability to negotiate. “Scott exercises his intuition in bargaining and while friendly, he’s not timid about it,” Sanders said. “Plus he finds the best stuff.” Mentoring by fellow dealers also helped Sanders launch and grow her new business. “Fellow dealers have been generous with tips and tricks of the trade,” she said. Sell what you love was one of the first tips Sanders received when she entered the business. An unexpected benefit has been Sander’s joy of finding a new interest to share with her husband, thus strengthening her 34-year marriage. “My husband and I are learning through the struggles and successes of this business that we can be a strong team. We now have a business we’re both excited about,” she said. “Each of us brings our strengths to the enterprise. As a result our marriage has grown immensely.”

Above: This sign inviting the public to visit historic Route 66 – the Mother Road – hangs outside the official welcome center in Dwight, Ill. The village is bisected by the still-traveled old U.S. highway that crosses eight states. (Photo submitted)
Thousands still travel ‘Mother Road,’ historic Route 66 By JO ANN HUSTIS
STREATOR, Ill. — There’s many a story behind the old highway saying, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66,” a slogan that’s recognized almost worldwide. One story tells of the English visitor who stopped in 2009 to look over the historic gas station-turned-welcome center on old U.S. Route 66 and Illinois 17 at Dwight, Ill. The visitor was asked to sign the log book. He promptly wrote his name – Paul McCartney. Wow! The local newspaper was notified. The following day, a picture of McCartney, one of the four famous Beatles, appeared on the front page of the home town paper. Another tale highlights Dwight’s Pioneer Gothic Church, which the local Presbyterian congregation built in 1857. In 1860, 18-year-old Prince Albert of Wales, the son of Great Britain’s Queen Victoria and who later succeeded to the British throne as King Edward VII, attended the Dwight church while on a two-month royal tour of Canada and the United States. Prince Albert arrived by train in Dwight at 6:27 p.m. on Sept. 22, 1860. He spent a week in the area, hunting prairie chickens and quail. He stayed at the home of his host, James Spencer, a founder of Dwight. Then in the 20th century, the Spencer house was remod-
eled by American architect Ossian Cole Simmonds and given to the town. And, the Pioneer Gothic Church has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. The story of Renfrew Park is about some land deeded to Dwight in 1897 on the stipulation it was to be used as a public park. The preserve was named in honor of “Baron Renfrew,” the alias used by the Prince of Wales when he visited the village in 1860. The land was deeded by David McWilliams of Dwight, who had begun a bank and a dry goods store in the village. He was a relative of Julia Child, the noted American chef, author and television personality. “Route 66 – the name is still magic,” former teacher Joy Ahearn of Dwight, who volunteers at the historic gas station/welcome center on old U.S. 66, noted of the highway that’s considered a classic example of Main Street USA. “Get Your Kicks” was written by Bobby Troup in 1946 and sung by Nat King Cole. “If you ever plan to motor west, Travel my way Take the highway that’s the best Get your kicks on Route 66. It winds from Chicago to L.A. More than 2,000 miles all the way Get your kicks on Route 66.” Driving Route 66 is the perfect way
to discover America, Ahearn said May 21 in a talk about the venerable highway to the Just Older Youth group of Streator. Also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America and the Mother Road, U.S. Route 66 was one of the original roadways within the federal Highway System. Historic Route 66 extends more than 2,000 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles. The highway travels through the heart of the United States – Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California – and some of the country’s most archetypal roadside scenes. “If you’re looking for great displays of neon signs, rusty middle-of-nowhere truck stops, or kitschy Americana, do as the song says and get your kicks on Route 66,” the Road Trip USA publication notes. Route 66 is one of the country’s first transcontinental highways. The highway was known in the 1930s-1940s as the Main Street of America because it crossed small towns in the Midwest and Southwest. Hundreds of motels, gas stations and tourist attractions lined either side of the highway. Hundreds of thousands of farm families in the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s migrated to California on Route 66, See Route 66 on page 23

Route 66 From Page 20 following what author John Steinbeck wrote was the “Mother Road.” In his book, The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck told of the thousands of people migrating to California to escape the despair of the Dust Bowl states. Many of those fleeing used Route 66 – the Mother Road – the Road of Flight – in their journey west. “Did you know that Dwight had the first traffic stop light – or probably the first stop sign I should say – south of Chicago?” Ahearn told her audience. “You could start in Chicago and drive 35 miles without a stop.” She and her husband, Don, who also teaches, volunteer their services weekly at the former Route 17 gas station on Route 66. The old station operated from 1939 to 1999, the longest continuously running service station to pump gas on historic Route 66. The station is now the official Route 66 welcome center for tourists to the historic highway and is open throughout the summer season. The station/welcome center is now included in the National Register of Historic Places. “Route 66 fascinates people worldwide,” Ahearn said. “We’ll get a

motorcycle group out of Chicago one day with riders maybe from Brazil, Germany, Australia and Japan. They come into the welcome center, take pictures and look around. Then the next group – like the Firebirds Club – will come in old 1950s cars. There’ll be 30 to 40 of them, just rolling down the highway in these pink, green and purple cars. “Some groups ride bikes,” she added. “They come to the center in groups of 30 and 40 riders at a time. They all want to go down the road. We have so much fun talking to people from every country. Most of them speak English – or partial English. It’s fun meeting these people from throughout the world.” More than 9,600 visitors signed the Route 66 guest book at the welcome station last year. They came from 49 of the nation’s 50 states – only West Virginia was not represented. Tourists came from 52 countries worldwide, Ahearn recalled. “People from all countries have read and heard about Route 66 from songs and movies,” she said. “They have seen the 1960-1964 TV show Route 66 with Martin Milner and George Maharis. Our visitors know their history and are very prepared with their itineraries.” Following World War II, people by the thousands left the industrial East for good jobs in the suburban idyll of Southern California, again following Route 66. The historic highway came to embody the demographic shift from the Rust Belt to the Sun Belt, Road Trip USA notes. Beginning in the late 1950s and gradually continuing for the next 25 years, old Route 66 was bypassed, section by section, as the high-speed interstate highways were completed. When the last stretch of freeway was finished in 1984, Route 66 was officially decommissioned. The old route is now designated as Historic Route 66. “You can still find the ‘old road itself’ in every one of the eight states historic Route 66 crosses,” Ahearn said. “Motor courts, gas stations, curio shops and tourist attractions still abound. It will always mean ‘going somewhere.’ Where would you like to go?”

AntiqueWeek GUIDE TO SHOPS & MALLS
INDIANA - Section 3
She started her mall before antique malls were cool
By Eric C. Rodenberg
DECATUR, Ind. — Yvonne Marie Gilbert could teach antique mall owners a few lessons – about persistence, survival and remaining true to her customers and dealers. On Aug. 1, the family-owned Yvonne Marie’s Antique Mall in the downtown of this small town (pop. 9,238) in mostly rural northeastern Indiana will mark its 25th year in business. When Gilbert and her late husband, Sam, opened the mall at 152 S. Second St. in 1978, “people didn’t know what an antique mall was,” according to Yvonne Marie. “There were a couple small stores that had been around forever, but this was a concept that was really new.” Yvonne and Sam carried the idea for the mall from a trip they had made to Sioux City, Iowa.
“That was the first mall we had ever seen,” Yvonne Marie said. “We thought it was really neat … it was one of the very first antiques mall. We thought that’s what Decatur needed.” That May, the couple bought a store that would ultimately comprise four store fronts in downtown Decatur with three floors. Son-in-law Joe Fullenkamp built the large, heavy wooden sign that still hangs out over Second Street. “We opened on Aug. 1 and, by then, we had a full house.” The store started out with about 75 booths; that’s close to the number of booths they have today. “A lot of my dealers have been with me the full 25 years,” Yvonne Marie says. “We also brought a lot of people to Decatur over the years, and they keep coming back. “The economy is always something to

be concerned about … always has been. But, right now, furniture is selling like crazy – we’re selling furniture almost every day. Our dealers price their items to sell – and they’re selling.” Beginning in August, the dealers will be offering 25 percent off on their wares in recognition of Yvonne Marie’s quarter century in business. The mall is open seven days a week. “I like to work,” 78-year-old Yvonne Marie says, “but sometimes I work a little more than I like … but I don’t know what I would do without the mall.” Through the years, though, she has had a great deal of help from her two sons and a daughter. “This is definitely a family affair,” daughter Lori Fullenkamp says. “I remember starting out tracking sales with a regular notebook and carbon paper. This is kind of where we grew up; now the grandkids (nine in number) are growing up here.” Prior to opening the mall, Yvonne Marie and Sam had only a casual interest in collecting antiques. That is, excepting Yvonne Marie’s collection of Dionne quintuplet items of which she has one of the largest collections in the world. The quintuplets were born on May 28, 1934, to poor, French-speaking farmers in Canada. Heralded throughout the world as miracle babies, it was a bright piece of news during the depths of The Great Depression. The news was not lost on Yvonne Marie’s parents. When she was born nearly two years later in May 1936, she was christened “Yvonne Marie” in tribute to two of the quintuplets, Yvonne Édouilda Marie and Marie Reine Alma Dionne. As a young girl in her early formative years, Yvonne Marie used a Dionne premium cereal spoon to eat her breakfast. Although she no longer has that spoon, she has more than made up for that loss. Throughout the 1930s, the quintuplets became famous – and commercially lucrative – with Karo corn syrup and Quaker Oats plastering their image over their products. See Yvonne Marie on page 44
