ANTIQUE & 17th June 2014

Cordy’s turns 50 John Cordy and Associates Ltd was formed in 1964 and the first catalogued sale of Stamps, Coins and Important New Zealand paintings was held in the rooms of the Royal Commonwealth Society, second floor, Queens Arcade, Auckland. A Walter Wright oil ‘Pipi Gatherer’ sold for £34 and a J.C. Hoyte watercolour ‘Whakanapanapa Geyser’ fetched £150. In March 1965 the company moved to new premises situated at 14 Customs Street East in a building long since demolished and rebuilt. Fine paintings, silver, jewellery, books, Pacific artefacts, coins, medals and all manner of collectables continued to be sold on a regular basis until the move to Emily Place in June 1969. Cordys was by now well and truly established as the leading Fine Art Auctioneers in Auckland. Conducting many prestigious estate sales and clearing marvellous private collections of art and antiques. The move to premises outside the city centre was inevitable and on 26th September 1985 the monthly catalogued sale was held in the newly re-furbished building at 180 Great South Road, Remuera. Today the same old fashioned principals still apply and the Company remains in private ownership. With a long history of providing professional services to all areas of Fine and Applied Art, Antiques, Jewellery and all manner of collectables Cordys looks well positioned to bring in the next 50 years. Our August 12th Antique & Art auction will be our chance to help celebrate this milestone achievement with special entries now being accepted.
