Since 2009, the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation has built programs that are effective, sustainable and easily replicated. Each of these successful programs have expanded so we extended our reach into communities across the country. We have reached out to the public health sector through our work with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)

BY THE NUMBERS

based on the tremendously successful calorie commitment. Our seminar series with RWJF and the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research focused on bridging the divide between the industry and public health. These initiatives have resulted in a successful, nationwide effort at reducing childhood obesity. In 2015, we launched the Commitment to Healthy Communities that will review community programs across the country and assess the impact of those programs through an academic research partnership with the City University of New York School of Public Health.

Our highest priority this year was to extend our reach to schools and families through partnerships to drive curriculum adoption. As a result of innovative collaboration with leading organizations, such as the National Head Start Association, the Clinton Global Initiative, the National PTA and others, HWCF has been able to exceed the ambitious goals we set early in the year. To date, more than 29.8 million students have been engaged with our standards-aligned wellness curriculum, an increase from 2014 of more than 50 percent.

A fundamental key to our success has been the ability to build momentum and scale the successful Together Counts™ platform through enhanced engagement with Corporate Members, Associate Members and Partners. We have continued to grow our membership base, which surpassed 300 in 2015, and have reached new audiences with free, standards aligned curriculum and resources without impacting the HWCF budget. Through partnerships like those with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in Indian Country, Boy Scouts of America, Catholic Charities and the National AfterSchool Association, we help at-risk children across all sectors of society learn about the importance of balancing physical activity and good nutrition for lifelong health.

The Energy Balance Digital Toolkit was distributed to 2,500 Catholic Charities service sites, reaching 9 million people living in poverty.

BUILDING MOMENTUM

In 2015, HWCF set out to play a more proactive role in bringing science to consumers and to facilitate dialogue between government, industry and the public health community. Through partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Hudson Institute and the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research, we launched a series of seminars designed to more effectively understand the challenges and opportunities before the public health community and the food industry that may lead to improved public health and policy outcomes.

HELPING COMPANIES MAKE MORE INFORMED INVESTMENTS TO BUILD HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

Through an academic research partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health, the Commitment to Healthy Communities (CHC) is assessing community programs designed to prevent hunger and obesity that were funded by the food and beverage industry. HWCF built a coalition of nonprofits and corporate entities (Community Engaged Advisors), including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and United Way Worldwide, to champion CHC efforts.

This initiative designed a formal framework to assess best practices and promote common metrics. It also established a new standard for community programs while enabling the food and beverage industry to assess the effectiveness of their efforts. A “BMC Obesity” article positioned the HWCF-Industry-Academic initiative as a model of public-private partnership.

“The CUNY School of Public Health is focused on innovations that can spur change across sectors to promote health. However, these are complex public health challenges that require multi-pronged and multi-sectoral approaches. Benchmarking industry activities is an effective way to hold companies accountable and to incentivize innovation and change, and we are very enthusiastic about this opportunity to contribute to this partnership.” Terry T-K Huang, PhD, MPH, CPH Professor, School of Public Health City University of New York 10

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT At our founding in 2009, we envisioned what success might look like in 2015. We set out to accomplish two things—to make a significant commitment in the marketplace by reducing calories sold and to reach families and children with best-of-class programs that support active, healthy lifestyles.

Lisa Guillermin Gable President, Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation

Each year, we set specific objectives and put into place mechanisms to transparently track and share our results. By focusing on building partnerships with like-minded organizations and integrating programming, we aligned investments to deliver results with the greatest impact. Sustainability was achieved by continuously improving actions that demonstrated results, examining efficiencies in our approach and leveraging what worked. As we move into 2016, we will focus on areas where we can continue to innovate through partnership and alignment. Working with the City University of New York School of Public Health, we are assessing community programs designed to prevent hunger and obesity that were funded by the food and beverage industry. By providing feedback to participating companies and identifying possible partnership opportunities with other companies, NGOs and community members, we hope to further the impact of existing programs through collective action. 2016 is a year that we will work with our partners to leverage the tools we have created and further focus our combined efforts to drive an innovative environment that contributes to the fight against childhood obesity.
