Annual Report FY 2012–2013

Our Leadership

Anniversaries serve as a time for reflection as well as celebration. This past year, in anticipation of our 25th Anniversary, we have spent time thinking about the meaning of our work and what our true impact has been. For anyone who has worked on one of our projects, the feeling at the end of the day is unforgettable – the aching muscles, the paint and dirt-stained t-shirt, and the complete satisfaction in knowing that you entered a stranger’s home and made them safer and healthier. But when describing our impact we frequently resort to cold, dry numbers. For example, this past year, we completed work on: 148 homes and 30 community centers, utilized 2500 volunteers, completed a million dollars worth of repairs, installed 56 smoke detectors and 29 CO detectors, replaced 12 roofs, repaired an additional 36 roofs, and eliminated electrical hazards in 31 homes. While these numbers convey a piece of the puzzle, they don’t tell the whole story, they obscure the humanity of our work, its tangibility, its importance. What we really do, the heart and soul of our work is giving people back their home. Our clients have shelter, but they have lost their sense of security. After years of deferred maintenance, our clients’ homes no longer provide refuge—home has become a source of stress, contributing to their poor health. With a few, simple repairs our volunteers are able to make people safe and healthy in their homes. But more importantly, in the process of completing these repairs, we restore the feeling of home. With the support of dedicated volunteers and donors, we have literally transformed the lives of thousands of Peninsula residents. Thank you for being a part of it. And as we look forward, we hope you will join us again in the coming year as we celebrate 25 years of service to our community. Spence Leslie

National Rebuilding Day (NRD) involves many factors. When you take 1 house, 2 companies, 3 project managers, 11 major home repairs, and 40 volunteers, it equals one happy homeowner and the perfect NRD project. It is all an equation, and when those variables come together harmoniously, it’s absolutely spectacular. The story of Lily, a longtime resident of Redwood City, began with a letter and application submitted on her behalf from her friend and neighbor, Lisa. The letter was a plea to help “an elderly woman with lots of spunk,” make repairs to a home she had been living in for 51 years and was no longer capable of maintaining. The small, 66-year-old house was in much need of repairs. The exterior alone needed fresh paint, a fence replacement, and landscaping. The interior was in need of much more; drywall repair throughout the home; major upgrades in the kitchen and bathroom; new windows; and major utility safety upgrades were needed. But this was not always the way Lily saw her home. When she and her husband, Frank, an Army veteran, moved into the home in 1962, it was a beautiful little home. It was the home where they raised their daughter, and the home their granddaughter would visit. It was a home that was a part of their love story and many happy memories. After Frank’s death in 1981, Lily did her best to maintain the home on her fixed income, but as the years went by, the home fell into disrepair. As part of NRD, Lily would witness her home transform before her very eyes. The 40 volunteers from Bumble Los Altos and Cody|Brock, Inc. spent days painting, landscaping, upgrading her kitchen and bathroom, installing new windows, and upgrading her utility systems. Being the ball of energy she is, an 87-year-old Lily worked alongside the volunteers helping move debris and landscape. “I can’t even…” Lily exclaimed, unable to finish her sentence as she watched the volunteers in awe. At the end of NRD, Lily was left with a safe and healthy home she could continue to spend her days in. Most importantly, at the end of NRD, Lily’s feeling of “home” was restored. Welcome home, Lily.

“I can’t even…” Lily exclaimed, unable to finish her sentence as she watched the volunteers in awe.

Restoring the Feeling of Home

Rebuilding Together Peninsula builds volunteer partnerships to rehabilitate homes and community facilities for low-income homeowners and neighbors — seniors, people with disabilities, or families — so they can live independently in warmth and safety.

National Rebuilding Day

Team Build

National Rebuilding Day always occurs the last Saturday of April. It is the culmination of a year’s worth of planning that brings together 2000 volunteers to rebuild and restore the homes of low-income homeowners and nonprofit community facilities. Our partners include corporations, service leagues, community agencies, foundations, volunteer groups, hospital districts, municipalities, and individual donors. From landscaping to complete renovations, NRD revitalizes communities and helps individuals live independently in warmth and safety.

Team Build offers communityminded corporations and service organizations opportunities for volunteer participation that are scheduled to meet the needs of the sponsoring group. Team Build days are at least six hours long and take place June through October. The projects are similar in scope to those undertaken on National Rebuilding Day. Each project fosters goodwill and cooperation while also providing muchneeded repairs for low-income homeowners and nonprofit community facilities.

Safe at Home

Raise The Roof

Healthy Housing Challenge

The Safe at Home Minor Home Repair program addresses the minor repair needs of homeowners before the needs become serious deferred maintenance issues. Homeowners who cannot afford even small home repairs receive help with minor plumbing and electrical work, debris removal, home accessibility, fire safety measures, window, door, and gate repair, and more. To be responsive to the health and safety needs of our community, staff members and small teams of skilled volunteers complete these minor repairs on a year-round basis.

Rebuilding Together Peninsula is the only local agency that provides free roof repair and replacement services for low-income homeowners and nonprofit community facilities. Securing an adequate roof is critical to ongoing home and building maintenance. Since 1994, RTP has repaired or replaced 392 roofs. Our roof replacements average $12,000 per roof. However, because of the support we receive from generous donors and roofers who contribute time and materials, we are able to do this work on average for half the actual cost.

A new set of tools and training, called Healthy Housing Rehab and Repair, helps to prevent and reduce health and safety hazards in homes. This program will soon be implemented through the Healthy Housing Challenge, a joint venture of National Center for Healthy Housing and Rebuilding Together. RTP is one of the 50 Rebuilding Together affiliates across the nation to participate in the program. In doing so, the Healthy Housing Challenge will demonstrate practical ways to make our homes significantly healthier and safer, and begin to awaken Americans to the link between our homes and our health.

Wollenberg Award

The Wollenberg Award is presented annually to those who provided extraordinary resources and leadership to Rebuilding Together Peninsula. The 2012-2013 award is proudly presented to Project Ninety and Ken Rhoads. Personal Award It started with a simple phone call. He was a person interested in volunteering and doing something good in his community. He learned about Rebuilding Together Peninsula and thought it was a good organization for his skill set. After all, as a person who enjoyed doing renovations and getting his hands dirty, it was surely a perfect fit. Little did Ken Rhoads know that a simple call in 2004 would turn into a 10-year volunteer career with RTP. Ken thought volunteering with RTP meant banging a hammer and fixing up some homes – but as he would learn, the role he would take on would be so much greater. Most people start out as general volunteers helping at a job site, but Ken’s experience in construction qualified him to lead a National Rebuilding Day (NRD) project as a Construction Captain. Ken says he remembers the first time he saw his first project like it was yesterday. “When I went to the house I didn’t know what to expect, then I arrived and thought, ‘Wow, this is going to be interesting.’ The house was a wreck,” Ken said compassionately. The house needed a lot of work – the floor appeared to be collapsed throughout and there was a significant amount of repairs needed, and Ken committed to do as much as he could. As the days to National Rebuilding Day grew closer, Ken said he was not just fixing a home, he was helping people, and a wonderful relationship between he and the family developed. “You go in thinking you’re just going to paint and fix a few things, but it’s so much more that you do when you go into those homes,” Ken said enthusiastically. “I saw that first family four years later and they told me I changed their life. You don’t forget something like that.” Since that first project in 2004, Ken has worked on multiple homes and has transformed several community facilities as a NRD Construction Captain. He has also served RTP as a Previewer for five years, doing site visits during the selection process – a process he calls very “humbling.” Ken has also been a team leader on Team Build projects, and has helped with wrap up work at various project sites, and he does it all with a big smile.

“It’s so important to do anything to change people’s lives and makes people’s lives better,” Ken said. “There is not enough of that in the world today.” And there are not enough people like Ken in the world. RTP is very fortunate to have such an amazing volunteer who is willing to help where he can, whenever he can. It started with a simple phone call, and turned into 10 years of giving and compassion. In Ken’s words, “It’s just amazing!”
