Annual Quality Assurance Report of IQAC - 2008-09 PART- A The IQAC in its meeting made a threadbare discussion and analyzed the activities of the college in the academic year 2007-08. This feedback motivated them to draw a new plan of action keeping in view the ensuing Re-accreditation process. The agenda and the action at the end of the year 2008-09 are listed out for your kind consideration. Academic Achievements : The results for the year 2007-08 declared by Gulbarga University are highly encouraging. It is a matter of pleasure to state that we have Seven University Ranks in all the three faculties. Miss Rajani Hugar bagged 4th Rank in Arts faculty, Miss Ramyya Hatti, Miss Shweta Pallod, Miss Ankita Kulkarni, Miss Ambika Ashok Rao were awarded third, fourth, fifth and eighth rank respectively in commerce faculty, Miss Vandana.B.Jahagirdar and Miss Jyoti Narsimhachar of Science faculty have bagged 6th and 9th Rank respectively.

P.G. Dept of Music has continued to maintain its academic excellence and all the students who have appeared the examination have been declared successful. The following students are declared as Rank holders.

Co-curricular and Extra Curricular Activities : The academic year 2008-09 commenced on 16th June 2008 and we celebrated the Foundation Day of our society on 17th June 2008. The Valedictory Function of Society’s Centenary celebrations was held on 2nd August 2008. Smt Sudha Murthy of Infosys and Shri Arvind Limbavali , Minister for Higher Education were the Chief Guests. Many Academicians, illustrious Past Students and M.L.A.s graced the occasion. On the same occasion some of the guests paid visit to the college and inaugurated the new Computer Center and Principal’s chamber. On 24th August 2008 an orientation session was held for all the students who sought admission for the I semester. Poojya Shri Raghuvijayteerth Swamiji of Kudalagi Math addressed the students. The students were introduced to the different facilities available in our college. Fresher’s Day by Arts , Commerce and Science V Sem Students to the I Semester students were organized on 16th Sept, 22nd Sept, and 17th Oct. 2008 respectively. On 5th Sept 2008 all classes organized Teacher’s Day Functions and honoured Teachers in the respective classes. Dr. Gururaj Dandapur HOD, P.G. Music was awarded

Shr Venktrao Manvikar , Memorial Best Teacher award by the N.V. Society on the eve of Teacher’s Day 17th Sept. 2008 is our Liberation Day of Hyderabad Karnataka Region. Prof. V.T. Kukanur HOD, Sociology spoke on the events that shaped our freedom. The staff and students participated in this function. Shri Venkatesh Gurunaik Social Reformer Addressed our staff and students emphasizing the importance of social service on 2nd Oct. 2008. One Day workshop on communications skills was organized on 14-10-2008 for 3rd semester students of our college. Dr Geet Mala Elenor, Smt. Alka Solankar were the resource persons. Nearly 250 students of B.A, .B.Com, & BSc. 3rd Semester attended the workshop. In Association with Prasaranga Gulbarga University our college organized an endowment Lecture on 14-6-2008 on ‘Sannati-A Cultural Study. Dr. Taltajje Vasant Kumar of Mumbai University was the Resource Person. On the eve of the Independence Day in association with Bharat Vikas Parishat a workshop on Patriotic songs for students was organized from 9th August to 15th August 2008. 238 students who attended were benefited by the workshop. The Hobby Club of the college organized Exhbiiton-cum-Competition on 15-092008. The interested students participated by exhibiting their collection of stamps and coins. For three Days from 14th Nov. 2008 to 16th Nov. 2008 Gulbarga University Youth Festival was held and our college emerged as overall champion with 94 points.

In the ‘Pratibha’ Youth Fest organized by Gulbarga Dist. Administration on Feb 11th and 12th 2009, the college once again emerged as overall champion with 59 points thus creating a record of establishing ‘Hatric’. The students and the members of the staff participated in ‘Peace March’ on Dec. 5th 2008 organized to pay Homage to deceased Civilians, Police Officers and Army men in Mumbai Terror Attack. Rich tributes were paid to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on Mahaparinirvan Day i.e, 6th Dec. 2008 by the members of staff and students. Karnataka Rajya Vijnan Parishad, Dept of Collegiate education, Bangalore and Veerashaiva College, Bellary had jointly organised state level Science Exhibition at Bellary from 21st to 23rd Jan 2009. Pradeep Badga, Khande Rao, Krishna and Sandesh of B.Sc. IV Sem and Manjunath and Mallashappa of B.Sc. II Semester participated in the exhibition Prof. Sripad Joshi guided the students. “Wipe out Terrorism –Save the Nation” programme was organized on 5-02-2009 in the college, Freedom fighter Shri Vidydhar Guruji spoke on the occasion. The Fine-Art Department had organized painting exhibition on this occasion. A documentary film on Terrorism was screened for the students and staff. Miss Afrin Siddique of B.com who completed her graduation in the year 1994, was internationally recognized and awarded for having written the longest poem in the world. The N.V. society felt honoured and felicitated her in its annual general body meeting on 30th Nov. 2008.

Prof. P.C. Deshpande and his team brought out the first News Letter of June – October 2008. Dr. Muralidhar S.Rao released News Letter in the annual general body meeting of the society on 30th Nov. 2008. BCA and BBM students celebrated New Year by organizing a seminar on effective communication skills and personality development. Mr. J.A. Kulkarni retired G M, Tata Motors, Pune was the resource person. Miss Geeta Rathod of B.A. VI Sem participated in the National Youth convention held at Amritsar, Punjab from 12th Jan to 16th Jan 2009. It is an achievement of our NSS unit because only two students of this region were chosen for this convention. Miss Basavarajeshwari Halu of B.A. VI Sem received commendation certificate as the Best NCC Cadet from the honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka. She represented our college in the Republic Day Camp and participated in the Republic Day Parade on 26.01.2009. Miss Pritvi Shetty of B.Sc. IV Sem represented our college and Gulbarga University in Republic Day Camp and also participated in the Republic Day Parade. Dr. Sayeed Ahmad Saramast, HOD Dept. of Library and Information Science participated and presented a paper in international symposium on “Emerging Trends in Technologies in Library and Information Services” from Dec. 18 to 20 2008 organized by Jaypee Instiute of Information Technology University, NOIDA New Delhi College of Engineering and SALIS Delhi NCR CHAPTER. The year 2009 is a memorable year for the citizens of Gulbarga. This multi cultural city added one more cultural center which has also become the most sought after sight seeing place. Buddha Vihar was inaugurated by the Honourable President of our

Nation Smt. Pratibha Patil on 7th Jan 2009. World Spiritual leader Dalai Lama unveiled the statue of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar and his colleagues who embraced Buddhism. Nearly two lakh people of this region attended both these functions. We had our share of service in these two historical events. Our NSS volunteers participated and looked after the catering services to the masses. Prof. U.G. Sirdeshpande, Dr. Dayanand Shashtri and Dr. Suryakant Sujjyat captained our NSS team. Women’s wing with the co-operation Dr. Megha Kamalapurkar organized a Bone Density Test for all girl students of our college. On 8th March 2009 Woman Day celebrations were organized for the students. Extempore speech competitions were held on this occasion. Mrs. Indira Manvikar, Vice President of N.V. Society graced the occasion. The idea of providing horizontal mobility to the degree students was implemented by opening up two new courses in the college. BBM and BCA courses started functioning. A separate building is provided for these courses. Response from the student community is encouraging. Our staff members took initiative to help, the students and administrative staff by sparing their free time and by forming support groups at the time of admissions and examinations. Financial recession has taken its toll on our campus placements. We could manage only a few campus recruitments in this period. Miss Talat Naaz of B.Com VI Sem got selected in campus interview conducted by Wipro Pune on 26.08.2008. Wipro Bangalore conducted campus interview in our college on 21st March 2009. Many students were shortlisted for placements.

93.5 FM Gulbarga conducted O B activities for RF Hunt in our college on 25.2.09 and interested students attended. Department of Physical Education has many achievements to its credit this year. Miss Sneha Ravindranath of B.Sc. VI sem secured individual championship in field events in the Gulbarga University Inter Collegiate Athletic Meet 2008-09. Miss Geeta S. Dhoni of B.A. VI Sem bagged Bronze medals in Discuss Throw and Javelin Throw in the same Athletic meet. Mr. Sanjukumar Rathod of B.Com II Sem got V place in 400 mtrs (Men) in the Athletic Meet. MR. Anilkumar Bhoji Rathod of B.A. IV Sem got V place in 100 mts in Athletic meet 2008-09. Career Guidance and counseling Cell of our college made an attempt to get funds from UGC for an exclusive students workshop. UGC was kind enough to sponsor Two days State Level Workshop on “Learning Strategies and Personality Development”. This event organized on 29th and 30th Aug. 2008, was successful in sensitizing the students on the need to develop personality . Career Guidance experts from different walks of life motivated our student thorugh their well prepared presentation. Perhaps this was the workshop organized exclusively for students. 17 interested students of News Paper Writer Forum attended News Paper writing workshop organized by Sangameshwar Mahila Mandal and Sanagmeshwar women Writers Forum on 15.02.2009

Hunting and training the talents in Music is taken up and response from commerce and science faculty is worth mentioning. The various clubs initiated an opportunity to the students of all Faculties in contributing their might towards curricular and co-curricular progress. The regular activities like career Guidance Cell, P.D. Programmes computer awareness, Library assistance, environment awareness are being taken up with enthusiasm. 5.

Exam – Reforms implemented The newly introduced semester system had affected overall performance of

students due to the mind set change from annual system. However, the care and concern shown by our staff has brought in dramatic changes in their performance in this year results. Assistance Hour Assistance hour is an open-ended programme initiated for the benefit of students. This hour is exclusively meant for solving the academic doubts of students in any and every subject. The Pursuance from our beloved principal has made Teachers and students to accept this scheme with all enthusiasm and interest. Dept of commerce, Political Science, Sociology, Hindi, Physics have already launched question Banks, students show keen interest and are able to have right approach towards the examination. Special coaching remedial classes, internal Tests, are as usual continued.

INITIATIVE TOWARDS F.D.P. As Planned in the Previous year an administrative work shop for non – teaching

staff was held on 8th Sep 2008 . This workshop supplemented the practical knowledge in terms of examination and administrative practices and procedures. The college honored the invitations of other institutions by sending our faculty members as resource persons and speakers in various occasions. Dr.Suresh Heroor, Dr. A.K. Kittur, Prof Sunanda, Prof P.C. Deshpande, Prof V T Kukanur. Dr. Dayanand Shastri, Prof. Vidyavati Tiwari, Dr. G.S. Kulkarni,Dr. Srikant Ekhelikar, Dr. Sayed Sarmast and Prof. Hemant Kolhapur are the Resource Persons who have presented papers and delivered lectures on their respective subjects. The ensuing Re-accreditation has motivated many of the administrators and their assistance in visiting our college, for administrative assistance and guidance. Mr. Gajanan Gurjar Head, administrative section, Shri. Sudarshan Omkar Chief. Librarian and Shri. G.A. Chincholi, PCI of our college, have been dealing with all the queries of various colleges of this region. The ‘A’ grade in NAAC prompts people to seek our ideas and opinions. This responsibility is being met with all humility by the above members. The Governing Council of the College has permitted all the staff members to take up higher studies – M.Phil, Ph.D. 8.

Co-ordinator, Dr. Dayanand Shastri and Dr. Suryakant Sujjayat led a team of 50 voluenteers to extend our services to Budha Vihar on 17th & 19th Jan 2009. f) A Special lecture was arranged on Wipe out Terrorism and Save Nation Student Awareness movement on 5-02-2009. g) Our NSS Unit in association with Rotary Club Gulbarga arranged First Aid Awareness Programme in our college on 21-02-2009. h) All staff and NSS Volunteers rendered their services in making the mega cultural Event a grand success i) Three Volunteers of our college participated in the University Level NSS Camp at GUG Campus from 28-12-2008 to 03-01-2009.

Separate Book Bank facility is available for SC/ST and poor students. A separate Research Room with reference books and Journals have been provided to Research scholars and teachers pursuing PhDs.

The academic body of the N.V. Society has appointed institution wise academic committee to monitor the performance and progress. Dr. B.R. Vaidya a member of this committee pays monthly visit to the college and physically verifies the academic factors. The committee members interact with students to get

spontaneous feedback. The chairman of Academic Body Shri Janardhan Katti passes on suggestions to the principals on the basis of the report submitted by the academic committees. He is very keen and concern about the special coaching classes and remedial classes for academically weaker students. The NAAC format of student feedback sheet is provided to all the out going students for Teacher assessment. A few of the senior staff member also collect descriptive feedback from student. The Principal takes stock of all these matters and settle the issues accordingly. The student friendly practices such as counseling class representative meetings, freshers parties fare-well functions, C.G.C. sessions and assistance hour provide us the real feed – back from students. Feed back is introduced in the following courses B.A. B.Com. B.Sc. B.B.M. B.C.A. P.G. MUSIC Installation of Aquaguard water purifier in Staff Room ladies room and Library, Separate campus for B.B.M. / B.C.A. COMPUTARISATION OF EDUCATION : The Process of computerization in all aspects is in progress. Apart from library, admissions, Examinations, and declaration of results the teaching staff is also motivated to use electronic tools in class room interaction.

TECHNOLOGY UP – GRADATION The College Computer Center has been shifted to newly constructed first floor with more computers.

Scholarships: C.V. Raman, Sanchi Honnamma, Sanskrit, GOI, Post Matric SC/ST. Defence, BCM scholarship were given away to the students. In addition 31 cash prizes instituted by teachers and philanthropists were awarded to the students on the college Annual Day.

The Association took up the request of the staff for discussion in sponsoring a few of the activities. However, it was decided in the meeting to provide all non financial support in Career Guidance Activities. Financial support will be given next year for one important function. Mr. Shakeel Ahmed of 2006 B.Com batch , who completed his MBA from Australia

and Miss Rohini studying in M.Com. final year to addressed the

students of the B.Com VI Sem and gave tips on preparation for entrance tests for higher studies. 31.

Activities and support from parent – Teacher – Association Informal interaction with parents helped us in improving the general conditions of the college .Our Alumni who are now parents visit out college regularly and extend us support in organizing activities and functions. Many of the parents of commerce and Arts, Science students requested for conducting classes for CET for MBA.

Performance : Sports Miss Sneha Ravindrananth K.N. from B.Sc. 6th semester for securing the individual championship in the women field event, at the 28th Inter Collegiate Athletic Meet 2008-09 by Gulbarga University by securing 15 points. She has brought laurels and recognization to our college. She has also bagged the individual championship in women field event in the N.V. Society’s Sports Meet 2008-09. Miss. Geeta Sayabanna Dhoni from B.A. 6th semester won the Bronze medal in the women discus throw and Javelin throw event at the N.V. Society’s Sports Meet 2008-09. Mr. Chennabasappa .V.G. of B.A. 2nd Semester and Mrs. Sanju Ganapati Rathod from B.Com 2nd Semester shared the individual championship in Track events at N.V. Society’s Sports Meet 2008-09. Anilkumar Bhoju Rathod of B.A. IV semester and Sanju Ganapath Rathod of B.Com 2nd semester who entered the last 8 (final heats) in 100 mts and 400 mts respectively.

Incentives to the outstanding Sports persons. Prizes, maintenance grant, medals, uniforms and cash prizes are provided to the achievers in sports a separate cash prize of Rs. 500/- is awarded to the university blues.

Activities of the Guidance and counseling unit CGC & NWF – 2008-09

 Organized Animation Job Opportunities Programme for students in association with ANTS and MMK college Gulbarga, on 13-09-2008.  Career Launcher, Bangalore Conducted Scholarship Test for Coaching class for CET to MBA to the interested students of our college on 27-09-2008.  The CGC Students attended campus recruitment drive conducted by WIPRO BPO PUNE on 26-08-08 at 9 am at PDA Engineering college, Gulbarga.  The CGC organized UGC Sponsored State Level Workshop on “Learning Strategies and Personality Development”. On 29th & 30th August 2008. The members of staff and students of our college and other colleges attended in large number.

 Representative of People First Company Bangalore briefed the final year students of BA, B.Com and B.Sc. classes regarding coaching classes for campus interviews on 12-01-2009.  The Representatives of ICFAI, Glb Conducted a session for VI Sem students on Communication Skills and Personality Development on 20-01-2009.  Career Launcher, Bangalore conducted a Talent Hunt Test for VI sem Students on 2901-2009. Srikant Pandit, Sriraksha, Rajani, Vidya .M. Were selected for 2nd round city level contest. Srikant Pandit reached the Regional Level Competition held at Bangalore on 14-03-2009.  The CGC participants participated in News Paper writing workshop organized by Sangameshwar women’s writers Forum on 15-02-2009.  Shri. Hanumant Reddy’s View on Terrorism on the eve of “Bhayotpadane Alisi Desh Uolisi” were published In Prajavani weekly issue of 15.02.2009.  15 students of B.Com VI Sem attended campus interview and selection of Manipal Academy and HDFC std. Life Insurance Organized by Gurukul College Gulbarga on 14.03.2009 and Six students were short listed for final interview.  93.5 S FM Gulbarga conduct QB Activity for RJ Hunt in our college on 28.02.2009 and interested students attended the programme. 37.

To streamline and fully computerize administrtion every member of the non teaching staff is encouraged and assisted to make use of computers. The society is seriously thinking of organizing an exclusive workshop for our office staff. 39.

Healthy Practices. The following New – Healthy Practices were introduced this year. 1) The Chief – Librarian has created competition and there by develop reading spirit among students. The Programmes are as follows 1.

PART – C 1)

Global financial crisis has created new challenges and fear psychosis among students and parents. Some of the developed countries are on the verge of thinking to put a full stop for outsourcing. The number of corporate houses coming for campus placements has drastically come down. India is yet to experience the effects of this financial crisis. But the media has created a hype and the fear is clearly seen on the faces of the youngsters. To overcome the existing situation and to motivate the students to perform better we have drawn up the below mentioned plan of action for the academic year 2009-2010.

To Strengthen the existing courses both in terms of quality and quantity.

To provide internal and infrastructural facilities according to the needs of the courses.

4)

To pay more attention towards the development of soft skills among students.

5)

To overcome the limitations of space and resources it is decided to enter into MOU with training providers in the respective areas.

The shift from morning college into day college will be continued even in future.

To continue publication of Books and to make it a regular feature.

To form a sports academy at the Dist. Level to uplift the sports talent of this region.
