1. Minutes of 2011 AGM The minutes of the 2011 AGM will be a seperate attachment on the email, and printed copies will be available at the meeting. It it proposed that these be taken as read.

2. Officials Reports 2012 Chairman - Barry Quick My first year as Chairman started with a bit of a “Baptism of Fire” with much concern and some confusion being generated regarding the Club Run Leaders responsibilities and associated insurance cover. Eventually this was resolved and I’m pleased to report that Ranjit, our Club Runs Secretary, has ensured that everything now runs “as smoothly as an extremely smooth thing” since he took on the role. The weekly reports from the various runs always make for interesting and entertaining reading. Annual General Meeting 2012

We shall be losing Colin Bates from the committee this year who has been a valued member in his role as Treasurer and for this last year as General Secretary and I would like to thank Colin on behalf of the club for his contribution over the years. The committee were of great assistance in helping me find my feet and I would also like to take this opportunity to thank them for that. All other committee members are standing for re-election but this does not preclude anyone else from standing, a decision being made by members votes at the AGM. Colin will be covering this in more detail separately so I shall leave that to him. On the membership side the club continues to thrive and it was especially gratifying this year to see the parents of some of our younger members getting involved in helping out at both evening and open club events and a big thank you to them for all their assistance Despite this it continues to be difficult to get people to assist at events and perhaps a more creative approach is required so if you have any ideas regarding this the committee would be delighted to hear them. This year of course has been the very best in terms of this countries cycling achievements and on two occasions I have been on local radio discussing this and the impact it will have on cycling generally. The club has already had enquiries from people who have been inspired by the Olympics and are keen to get into cycling and we hope this develops into more people being involved in all aspects of our wonderful sport by joining Reading CC in 2013.

Club Secretary - Colin Bates The club secretary’s role is to keep everyone aware of what the club is doing, to encourage participation and involvement. It has been gratifying to see the scale and success of volunteer input into the Olympic Games, with club members among the many who have put themselves forward this year. I hope that this will reflect itself at club level within RCC next year as the club and committee would benefit greatly from a greater level of engagement. As Secretary over the last year I received a large volume of inbound email promoting cycling events of all sorts, and associated businesses. I try to select just the more interesting items and circulate them out to members. Regardless, it is clear that interest in cycling, and the amount of cycling events being promoted is at an all-time high. As you take part in these events, consider all the effort and time that goes into organising them, and please be one of those who helps to make them happen. I finally step down from the committee at this AGM after over 10 years in roles covering Road Race Secretary, Treasurer, Secretary and organiser of races and social events. I feel I can Annual General Meeting 2012

look back on this as time spent in a good cause. What started as an effort to pay back into the club in return for the support it gave me in getting started in cycling, has turned out to have been personally rewarding on its own merits. I thank all those people who have helped me out when asked, and especially those who don’t even need to be asked.

Treasurer - Colin Garnham The accounts for the club’s financial year to 30-Jun-2012 can be found in Appendix B. These have been audited by Richard Quayle. The club has returned a healthy surplus for the year.

Membership Secretary - Steve Ferry Membership stood at 178 in mid-July. Steve will report verbally to the meeting.

Press Secretary - Rod MacFadyen This year the weekly press report has covered road races, time trials, sportives, audax, and notable rides in general. By comparison to last year I feel I’ve had fewer road racing and sportive reports. I am not sure whether the membership is doing less of those or is just less inclined to report them to me. Time trial news has been a strong theme this season with some impressive rides to publicise. My thanks go to all club members who do contribute items, the press report exists to publicise your achievements. The main outlet externally for Reading CC news is within the sports pages of the Reading Post and Reading Chronicle. The weekly duties of the Press Secretary include soliciting inputs from members, editing those into a readable report, and emailing it out to the club and newspapers. The Press Secretary is always in need of good quality photographs of the membership in action. I have taken a lot of mugshots of riders in RCC kit over the years but good action photos are especially welcome. The Press Secretary may occasionally be invited to speak on BBC Berkshire radio about current cycling issues; there have been several such occasions this year with Wiggins’ TdF victory and the Olympics. I have been doing this role since 2003 and would like to step aside and let someone else take over this rewarding position. The role suits someone who has a broad interest in cycling, likes staying in touch with club news, can write lucid english, can take, select and edit photographs, and who is moderately IT-literate.

Club Runs Secretary - Ranjit Barha Summary of this year: Club rides remain a very popular RCC weekly event with up to 50 riders on good weather days and average 30 riders on most days. Everyone seems to enjoy the ride destinations but there is still an apathy of leaders, not that it matters as there are always 3 groups and someone leads to somewhere as everyone wants to have an enjoyable ride. There are no major issues; I will no longer be listing a new riders ride as they all join the steady or brisk groups and no one is coming forward to lead such a group in case it's too slow and short.

Cyclo-Cross Secretary - Stephen Bale The 2011/12 season saw a few new riders from the club take part in cyclocross and acquit themselves very well. Gary Barlow in particular rode consistently to rank well in the Wessex League. We continue to affiliate to the Wessex League. The option of switching to the Central League (which is our British Cycling area) was considered but on balance the league structure and the accessibility of the events on the M3/A34 corridors were the key factors in us remaining as we were. This means that we stick with the vets and the seniors racing in separate races. There have been no substantive changes to either the league, BC, or UCI rules. The 2011 Bill Higson was a very successful promotion, blessed again with fine weather. The park is booked for 21 October and I anticipate even bigger fields as CX is probably the most accessible form of bike racing and in this Olympic year I am expecting a boost to competitive riding. Many thanks to those who have already volunteered to assist and I warmly welcome other offers of assistance. With the Wessex League split between the veterans and seniors we need to look outside the league to hold our club championship event. Again there is a Central League event at Chiltern Edge School on 2 December and I will propose to the committee and members that this be selected as our club championship event with the Bill Higson trophy being awarded to the highest placed RCC rider. I am happy to offer myself for re-election for the post of CX secretary for 2013. Time Trials Secretary - Graham Patterson We have managed to run a full evening calendar of club time-trials this year despite roadworks and the loss of the Heckfield circuit. The roadworks on H10/1 and H25/1 lost us two good courses, however this has also forced us in to looking for some alternates, and the

use of HCC241 (Fairmile) and the mid-season Hillclimb up Pishill proved popular with good turnouts. Field sizes have been a little lower than 2011 but the weather has not been great this year with heavy rain blighting several events. Despite this we have had a total of 183 RCC riders over 24 events as well as 85 non-RCC riders. The Dave Finch and Handicap competitions have been very closely contested with the DF points coming down to the final few races. Several new members have come along and some riders have been consistently riding weekly having been infused with the testing bug! I have also had several suggestions of courses from members, including possibly using HCC259 and a loop to the South of Reading which I am investigating currently, or two shorter loops of the old Heckfield circuit. This year has seen a core of volunteers helping with my grateful thanks, including Ian Lomas, Barry Quick, Enrico Bradamante, Steve Thurgood, Graham Regan and Chris Tomsett’s parents Graham and Sarah. I have only had to draft Mrs. Patterson in once in the last event for finish line timing – a baptism of fire in which four riders finished within ten seconds of each other! The club has run (including the hillclimb to come) three open events very successfully with good feedback on organisation and ride experience. Unfortunately due to the loss of H10/1 to roadworks and other pressures we were unable to run the Open 10 event. We have four organisers for the Open events of 2013 so hopefully will be able to run all our scheduled rides. I would please ask any organiser who feels overwhelmed or needs support, or simply cannot run the event to please let the committee know as soon as possible in advance so we can act quickly to make changes. Hopefully we will regain the use of H10/1 and H25/1 next year along with some new courses. I am in the process of calculating the awards from this year and hope to publish them shortly.

Clothing Secretary - Stephen Bale We are now in our fourth year with Gear Club as our clothing supplier. Once again they have fulfilled all our orders accurately and on time. A small redesign has taken place in accordance with the AGM decision to be un-sponsored as a club and the logos of the former sponsors have been removed from the pattern. To keep the continuity of the kit the background pattern has remained exactly the same while the ‘Reading CC’ text size has been increased and the RCC logo used to fill the spaces proportionally. New stock was ordered to replenish only the sizes where we were short so for a while there is a Hobson’s choice as to exactly what Annual General Meeting 2012

5

Reading Cycling Club

pattern is available in a particular size. I’m happy to report that most members have been unfussy as to which pattern they have with some preferring the old design with logos. This in part harks back to where we came in with the sponsorship which was to give the club the look and feel of the trade teams. It has meant that the clothing has retained value and it hasn’t been necessary to discount. The policy of keeping jerseys and shorts in stock has remained the same and is working for the members. The quality of the kit has improved marginally and there has once again been an upgrade to the inserts in the bibs. As ever Gear Club has been happy to accept feedback and work on improvements where necessary. As a club we can always expand the catalogue of items held but need to be mindful of the high cost of clothing, and holding it in stock in particular. Once again liaison with the club treasurer has been both important and useful and I would like to thank Colin Garnham for his assistance with the accounting. I am happy to offer myself for re-election for the post of clothing secretary for 2013. Magazine Editor - Ian Lomas Will report verbally to the meeting. Welfare Officer, Club Coach - Greg Woodford Will report verbally to the meeting.

6. Any Other Business From: Martin Cairns Subject: [readingcc] End of Club TT Season Merriment Date: 13 August 2012 20:05:15 GMT+01:00 To: [email protected] Dear all, The end of this years club TT season is nigh upon us once again (there are only three Tuesday evening events left plus the hill climbs in September). Graham Patterson has done a first class job of organising our regular Tuesday evening events once again, along with the help of a small army of regular volunteers that are too numerous to name. In order to say big thank you to Graham for his efforts, I am organising an informal a social gathering towards the end of September. The format will probably be a simple but effective one: drink(s) + curry in central Reading. I propose to hold this get-together on Friday 28th September. We already have £15 in the drinks kitty from our winning the team prize at last weekend's Clive Pugh memorial TT organised by our very own Ian Lomas (and no, it wasn't a fix!). Everyone is welcome and especially those who have supported the club TT events this year, whether helping out or riding. In order that I can gauge interest for this get-together, please would you indicate your interest to me by return of email over the next few weeks. I'll send reminders out during September anyway. Also, if there are any particular conflicts with the proposed date, I welcome any alternative suggestions. Cheers, Martin

NOTES Clothing sales exceeded purchases as only one order was placed this year as against two last year. A number of the sales being from last years stock. The decision to revert to being non-sponsored resulted in a considerable drop in both CTT and BC affiliation fees. The Open 50 TT showed a surplus this year as the number of entries were higher than last year possibly due to the change to a more popular course. Both the Cyclo Cross and Road Race showed less of a surplus possibly due to a more substantial prize list. It is not the intention for the club to profit from these events. This is the first year that the club has charged entry fees on the line to cover CTT LWDC levies for club TTs. The PayPal account opened for the Anthony Maynard Sportive has been closed and the balance transferred to the main account. All in all, despite a considerable drop in income from membership fees, the club showed a healthy surplus for the year. Colin Garnham. Treasurer.
