Flower Show Schedule This document presents all information required by people wishing to enter the Flower Show part of the event. The Flower Show is an open, judged show, anyone may enter. There is no entry fee. NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO SALES TO ANY PERSON PRIOR TO OPENING AT 1:00 PM

SHOW RULES 1. St. Peter’s Church Hall will be open for staging exhibits Friday, May 13 from 4:30 to 8:00 PM. All exhibits MUST be in place by 8:00 PM Friday. Exhibitors will be responsible for submitting exhibit cards at the time they stage their entries. The cards will be available at the Cowichan Valley Garden Club meetings on April 13th and May 11th, on the CVGC Website, or can be obtained at the Church Hall on May 14. 2. Judging will be done by members of the Vancouver Island Horticulture Judging Group and will begin at 9:30 AM. Saturday May 14. Only designated Show Committee Members, Judges and Judges Clerks may be present during judging. Only designated members of the Show Committee and/or Judges Clerks have the right to move exhibits. 3. The Club has the right to refuse any entry. No awards will be given where, in the opinion of the Judges, exhibits are not of sufficient merit. 4. All exhibits must be removed at the close of the show on Saturday May 14, but not before 4 PM. 5. Provided the entries are different varieties, Exhibitors may make more than one entry per class, except in the Decorative Division. 6. Containers in the Cut Flower Division are supplied except where noted in this Schedule. The club is not responsible for loss or damage to Exhibitors’ containers or personal effects, however caused. 7. All entries in the Potted Plants Division must have been owned by the Exhibitor for the three months prior to the show. With the exception of the Decorative Division, all other exhibits must have been the property of, and have been grown by the Exhibitor, for at least one month prior to the show. 8. All entries are accepted subject to the rules published in this schedule. In all matters of dispute, the decision of the Show Committee shall be final. Any complaints must be submitted, in writing, to the Show Convener before the close of the show.

CUT FLOWER DIVISION  All exhibits must have been grown by the Exhibitor.  Varieties should be named where possible, for the interest of the public.  Daffodils to be displayed without leaves.  Tulips to be displayed with no leaves or one attached leaf.  Judges may divide classes. Judging will be done according to BC Council of Garden Clubs Judging Standards for Non Specialized Shows. Definitions 1. A stem or stalk is a plant structure carrying one or more flowers, buds may be present, it may be branched, (e.g. bearded iris). 2. A truss is a cluster of flowers or fruit growing from one stem (e.g. Rhododendron & tomatoes). 3. A spray is a branched many-flowered inflorescence, usually on a single main stem (e.g. Quince). 4. A polyanthus type primula has a single stem with a cluster of flowers, which include the candelabra, auricula, and drumsticks. 5. A primrose type primula has one flower on one stem, which includes the double flowering variety. 6. A bowl is a container wider than it is tall and without feet or a pedestal. Show Tips  Must be clean with no unreasonable damage.  Not too old (should not have a swollen seed pod).  Make sure you have entered the correct class (ask the Show Convener or Clerk if in doubt). Check the number of required stems/blooms - wrong counts result in NAS  Help with staging and entering your exhibit will be available at the Show.

 

NAS: “Not according to schedule” Judges will comment. Ensure the size of the container suits the scale of the plant material, and exhibits are balanced and pleasing to the eye. Cut the stems at a length that is in scale to the size of the bloom.  Use bits of rolled newsprint to stuff in the container to hold the stems erect and evenly spaced.  Show blooms with only their own foliage attached.  Where applicable, PLEASE NAME YOUR VARIETIES If you don’t see a class for your plant materials, bring them anyway and we will create a class for them. Cut Flower Classes 1. Hosta - 3 leaves, 1 variety, 1 vase. 2. Hosta Collection - 3 leaves, 3 varieties, 3 vases. 3. Aquilegia (Columbine) 3 stems, 1 or more varieties, 1 vase. 4. Heuchera - 3 leaves, one or more varieties, displayed in exhibitor’s container. 5. 3 leaves – any plant not listed above, displayed in exhibitor’s container.

6. Collection of 3 Fern fronds - 3 fronds, 3 varieties one vase. 7. Allium – one bloom any variety. 8. Fern – three fronds, one variety one vase. 9. Iris, one stem any variety 10. Iris, bearded - 3 cuts, 1 or more varieties, one vase 11. Peony– 1 stem, any variety. 12. Pansy and/or Viola - 5 blooms 1 or more varieties, arranged on moss in bowl supplied by the exhibitor. 13. Hardy Geranium - 3 cuts 1 variety, 1 container supplied by exhibitor. 14. Hardy Geraniums - 5 cuts 1 or more varieties, in a container supplied by the exhibitor. 15. 3 Tulips, 1 variety 1 vase. 16. 3 Tulips, 3 varieties, 1 vase. 17. 1 Tulip, double bloom variety, any colour. 18. 1Tulip – red, rose or pink. 19. 1 Tulip – yellow, orange, or white. 20. 1 Tulip – any other colour blend. 21. 1 Species Tulip. 22. Narcissus, 1 stem, any variety. 23. Narcissus, 3 stems, 1 or more varieties, one vase. 24. Poppy - 1 stem, any variety. 25. Primula - 1 stem polyanthus type (see definitions), in exhibitor’s container. 26. Primula - 3 stems polyanthus type (see definitions), 1 or more varieties, in exhibitor’s container. 27. Primula - 3 stems primrose type, in exhibitor’s container. 28. Primula - 1 stem any other type, in exhibitor’s container 29. Euphorbia - 1 stem, any variety, with or without flowers. 30. Foxglove - 1 stem lateral shoots removed. 31. 3 stems or blooms of any other flower genus not listed above, 1 vase. Note: 3 or more exhibits of the same genus will constitute a separate class. 32. Collection of 5 spring flowers - 5 stems, 5 genera or varieties in one vase, balanced and pleasing to the eye (no Shrubs). 33. Fragrant bloom - 1 stem, any genus or variety 34. 1 cut any other spring flower not mentioned above (no flowering shrubs). 35. Rose - 1 cut red/pink. 36. Rose - 1 cut, yellow/orange. 37. Rose - 1 cut, white/cream.

38. Rose - 1 cut, blue/purple. 39. Rose - 1 cut, multi-colour. 40. Rose - fragrant (no foliage), floating in a rose bowl or snifter supplied by the exhibitor. 41. Heather and/or Heath - 3 stems, 1 or more varieties arranged in exhibitor’s container. 42. Rhododendron - 1 truss, any variety - red, rose or pink predominant. 43. Rhododendron - 1 truss, any variety - yellow or orange predominant. 44. Rhododendron - 1 truss, any variety - purple or blue predominant. 45. Rhododendron – 1 truss, any variety – white predominant. 46. Rhododendron – 1 spray, any variety, any color. 47. Evergreen Azalea - 1 spray. 48. Deciduous Azalea - 1 spray. 49. Flowering dogwood - 1 branch. 50. Flowering Shrub or Tree - 1 cut, any genus or variety not listed above. 51. Collection of Flowering Shrubs/Trees - 3 cuts, 3 genera or varieties, other than listed above, one vase. 52. Shrub with interesting foliage - 1 cut, any genus or variety - may have flowers. 53. Fragrant flowering shrub or tree - 1 cut, any genus or variety. 54. Clematis - 1 stem, large flower variety. 55. Clematis - 1 stem, small flower variety. 56. Culinary herbs - 5 cuts, 5 varieties one container supplied by exhibitor. 57. Grasses, 3 stems 1 or more varieties. DECORATIVE DIVISION  A Design may include fresh cut, dried, weathered and/or treated plant materials, unless otherwise specified. Artificial plant materials such as silk flowers are not acceptable. Accessories (e.g. candles, stones, ribbons, pottery figurines) are allowed unless otherwise specified.  Carefully read and comply with the show schedule.  Exhibits may be no larger than 24” wide x 20” deep. Height is unlimited.  Do not use rare or endangered wildflowers.  Flowers and other plant materials may be purchased for the Decorative Division unless otherwise specified. Decorative Division, General Class Open to everyone. 58. Himalayan Fantasy: A symmetrical triangle design with predominately rhododendron and/or azalea flowers, other foliage allowed. 59. Mother and Child: A design using 2 containers. 60. Natural Delight: A pave design, a flat composition in a shallow dish, of solid clusters or paths of flowers and other materials (e.g. stones, moss, dried materials, shells, etc.) which are placed to form a motif or picture. 61. Home Grown: A design using spring flowers and greenery from your garden or your neighbour’s garden, no purchased materials. 62. New Moon: A crescent design. 63. Sea Breeze: A miniature design in a sea shell, not to exceed 5 inches in any direction. 64. Reach for the Sky: A vertical design. 65. Roadside Wonder: A design using materials collected from the ditch or roadside. Decorative Division, Novice Class (Open to exhibitors who have never won a first prize ribbon in a public, judged floral design show)

66. Himalayan Fantasy: A symmetrical triangle design with predominately rhododendron and/or azalea flowers, other foliage allowed. 67. Reach for the Sky: A vertical design. 68. Roadside Wonder: A design using materials collected from the ditch or roadside. Decorative Division, Old Pros Class (Open to exhibitors who have won a first prize ribbon two times or more in a public, judged floral design show). 69. Himalayan Fantasy: A symmetrical triangle design with predominately rhododendron and/or azalea flowers, other foliage allowed. 70. Mother and Child: A design using 2 containers. 71. Natural Delight: A pave design, a flat composition in a shallow dish, of solid clusters or paths of flowers and other materials (e.g. stones, moss, dried materials, shells, etc.) which are placed to form a motif or picture. 72. Roadside Wonder: A design using materials collected from the ditch or roadside POTTED PLANT DIVISION  Potted plants must have been owned by the Exhibitor for not less than THREE months.  Be sure pots and plants are clean, no dead leaves, bugs or cobwebs.  Exhibit in a non-embellished pot, no baskets, pot size in scale to plant size.  Ensure plant has even growth and good shape, looks healthy with no unreasonable damage.  Exhibits may be no larger than 24” wide x 24” deep. Height is unlimited. 80. Dish Garden: Succulent and/or Cactus. May be indoor or outdoor. 81. Any foliage house plant other than fern. 82. Any flowering house plant. 83. Outdoor grown flowering plant or plants, one container. 84. Bonsai PHOTOGRAPHY DIVISION  Entries to be no larger than 5 x 7 inches, without mounting or matting.  Exhibitor’s name printed on back of each photograph.  No more than two entries per exhibitor per class.  Be creative in composing your photograph, try different angles for the shot, and experiment with lighting.  Entries may be submitted at the Garden Club meeting on Wednesday, May 11 or at St. Peter’s Church Hall on Friday, May 13 from 4:30 to 8:00 PM. 85.
