The Blind Men and the Elephant Indian Tale http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_Men_and_an_Elephant http://www.a-levelalliance.com/library/articles/TimelessTruth.html http://www.geocities.com/sunitra_in/blindmen.html The story of the blind men and an elephant appears to have originated in India, but its original source is debated. It has been attributed to the Jainists, Buddhists, and sometimes to the Sufis or Hindus, and has been used by all those groups and by the Discordians. Two of the best-known versions attributed to an individual in the modern day are the 19th Century poem by John Godfrey Saxe and the late 20th Century story by Reverend Loveshade. In various versions of the tale, a group of blind men (or men in the dark) touch an elephant to learn what it is like. Each one touches a different part, but only one part, such as the side or the tusk. They then compare notes on what they felt, and learn they are in complete disagreement. The story is used to indicate that reality may be viewed differently depending upon one's perspective. Various versions are similar, and differ primarily in how the elephant's body parts are described, how violent the conflict becomes, and how (or if) the conflict among the men and their perspectives is resolved.

Percezione e Rappresentazione: Ipotesi tra Gombrich e Arnheim / Andina, tiziana, Aesthetica Preprints, Palermo 2005 Abstract/Résumé:The present volume addresses some of the central concerns regarding the relationship between perception and representation: why does the perception of some substances not change, while other substances seem to depend on the subject perceiving them? Why is the color red always, broadly speaking, red, while phenylthiourea can taste bitter or absolutely insipid depending on who tastes it? What is the difference between the color red and phenylthiourea, between the perception of a painting by Mondrian or by Raphael? Our study is based on the assumption that to see perception simply as something that precedes representation is an untenable opinion. To argue this point, the volume briefly traces the history of the relationship between perception and representation through the analysis of some key moments in modern philosophical debates (e. g., the dialogue between Molyneux and Locke, as well as Berkeley's reflections) and then follows its evolution by examining some important research in the neuro-sciences (with particular reference to the work of Elizabeth Spelke and Samir Zeki). What emerges is that the activities of perception and representation that are linked to aesthetics shed light on some important forms of ordinary perception and representation. For this reason, the volume focuses on a comparison between two authors, Ernst Gombrich and Rudolf Arnheim, who have authoritatively addressed these theoretical questions advancing diametrically opposite answers. The thesis of the present volume will emerge from the contrastive analysis of Gombrich and Gestalt theoreticians: it will be a beautiful journey into the heart of things, both perceived and represented, a journey in which aesthetics plays a key role.

Lacune; Réintégration; Psychologie; Perception Abstract/Résumé: The Teoria del Restauro written by Cesare Brandi and published in 1963 was the first work on the methodology of restoration. In this work the author refers to the Gestalti-psychologie several times, a tendency of modern thought which revolutionized psychology in the 19th and 20th centuries, introducing therefore the study of the visual process and the mechanisms of perception. His interest did not entirely lie on perceptive phenomena but on seeking ways of intervening professionally on works of art. He was spurred by the will to end too many unsatisfactory and even disastrous restorations to be found in abundance in that period. His teachings or rather his considerations on just how far one can place faith in science still holds true today, not forgetting that a work of art is created principally to interact with the onlooker. Art and Illusion: A Study in The Psychology of Pictorial Representation / Gombrich, Ernst Abstract/Résumé: Art and Illusion: A Study in the Psychology of Pictorial Representation, published in 1960, is one of the most influential books written during the twentieth century on the subject of art. Following the publication in 1950 of his incredibly popular book, The Story of Art, Ernst Hans Josef Gombrich consented to give the A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1956. Those lectures became the book Art and Illusion. Critics generally agree that this volume, among Gombrich’s myriad publications, is his most far-reaching and influential work. Gombrich continued to advocate many of the ideas put forth in this book throughout his life. Indeed, he not only revised the text and wrote a new preface for the second edition of the book published in 1961, he also wrote a new preface for the ‘‘Millennium Edition’’ published in 2000, in his ninety-first year. In Art and Illusion, Gombrich poses this essential question: ‘‘Why is it that different ages and different nations have represented the visible world in such different ways?’’ Throughout the pages of the book, Gombrich attempts to address this question using science, psychology, and philosophy to help formulate his answer. At the heart of his theory is the notion of ‘‘schemata,’’ that is, the idea that the artist ‘‘begins not with his visual impression but with his idea or concept’’ and that the artist adjusts this idea to fit, as well as it can, the object, landscape, or person before him or her. Gombrich calls this theory ‘‘making and matching.’’ While art critics and historians have developed new ideas about representation since the first publication of Art and Illusion, Gombrich and his ideas continue to be a mighty force. Thus, serious students of art and art history find Art and Illusion an important and necessary part of their education.

These papers focus on the non-destructive analytical techniques for the conservation of cultural heritage, the theory behind the techniques and applicative potentials within this field, and the role of environmental evaluation and monitoring for planning preventive conservation. The techniques discussed range from optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray computed tomography to the diverse X-ray spectrocopic methods (diffraction, fluorescence and absorption) and ion beam techniques (proton-induced x-ray emission, PIXE, and proton-induced gamma-ray emission, PIGE). Their applications are illustrated through the elemental analysis of various materials, such as bronze, pigments, dyes, glass, stones, and the study of their elemental composition and deterioration or corrosion products (such as black crusts) for determining cleaning and conservation procedures. In some cases, these non-destructive techniques are coupled or combined with historical analysis to determine traditional manufacturing techniques, identify the provenance of the materials employed, or determine the authenticity of artefacts. Emphasis is also put on the study of microclimatic changes and air pollution and their effects on the preservation of cultural heritage. Shelf no. XXIV A 61

Less criticism is displayed when it comes to considering the amount and detail of information to be gathered on objects or samples, especially when dealing with organic materials. The best ratio between information quality and sample size is obtained in this case by the application of sophisticated analytical techniques on micro samples. Simple tests involve lack of detail, error, and the risk of failure, to such an extent that their use on objects of art and culture should not be promoted. Hence, the best approaches for damage assessment are those that combine the professional skills of both conservators and scientists. This is clearly illustrated by the outcomes and spin-offs of European RTD projects, in which end-users have played an active role. Shelf no. XXI 546

The paper presentations are divided into five main categories: identification and deterioration of textile materials; archaeological textiles; learning from the present and past; characterizing and monitoring textiles; and annotating textile bibliographies. There were also fifteen posters presented during the conference, of which eight are included in the postprint volume. Preliminary results inspired a comprehensive archaeological, historical, construction-architectonic, dendrochronological, technological and microbiological examination of the entire church. Tree-ring dating proved that this church is the oldest wooden church in Poland: it was built in 1374, more than 250 years earlier than supposed. Conservation efforts restored the original beauty of the church, and scientific examination reconstructed its history, applied technologies and structural characteristics. For the terms preservation, preventive conservation, examination, conservation and restoration the terminology of the ICOM-CC is used in this contribution. General terms for research, basic and applied research are brought into the context of the theme "conservation science". The collaboration between conservator and scientist is presented in two case studies for which the scientific method is used to identify the problem and the development of the project. Particular emphasis is laid on the need for a continuous dialogue between the conservator and the scientist. Shelf no. XVIII E 131 23.
