Do you have stock that need a condition boost? Pete Richardson - ‘Wereroa’, Waitotara, South Taranaki “The first trial group consisted of 20 ‘tail end’yealing steers which were the poorer ones of the mob. They got a couple of doses of palaMOUNTAINS during a 4 week period and within the month end they had caught up to the rest. In my view they certainly were visibly improved and it gave me the confidence that the product worked. I then drench the rest of the mob and again saw good results. I have also used this product on sheep as a prelambing boost with a pleasing outcome. This product is a very good tool to use on stock to give them a boost and improve general health.”

palaMOUNTAINS REVIVE RESULTS

Charles Duncan - Hunterville Drenched 194 lambs in December 2013 that he felt would not be satisfactory for slaughter. At the end of March 2014, these were all cleared from the farm to the works. He is very happy with the results achieved and is now drenching ewes and lambs when weaned.

John Petersen - Central Plateau John purchased a 20ltr at the 2014 Fieldays and on the 16th June drenched his beef cattle. These were re-weighed on 26th June and they averaged a 12kg weight gain at 1.2kg per day. James commented that these sort of weight gains do not happen here at this time of the year. These cattle were reweighed last month and have increased further after the second drench. The difference between the two groups is the control group have increased on average 1.2kgs daily where the treatment group has increased 1.8kg daily.

Neil Evans - Pahia Neil drenched 40 of last year’s lambs in August and they weighed an average of 36kg. On weighing 10 days later weights ranged between 38 – 40kg. The average gain was 2.5kg which Neil said was exceptional, especially with the wet and cold weather conditions. At the end of October Neil had not reweighed these sheep because of lambing pressures, however he assured us that they were looking well. At tailing he drenched all ewes with 20mls and lambs with 10mls. His pet lamb, which has been dosed occasionally with 5mls of palaMOUNTAINS Revive, is the best he has seen as far as growth is concerned.

Murray Rohloff - Alexandra Murray is a ram breeder and was concerned about his ram hogget’s after a tough winter. He has dosed these six weeks ago (mid-September 2014) and is now very happy with their presentation. Unfortunately scales were not available at this property.

Hamish McDonald - Pio Pio Hamish increased his first draft percentage from 39% to 59% after drenching his lambs at tailing. Drenching costs (excl GST): Cattle: 75ml Sheep/goats: 30ml Lambs (weaning): 20ml Lambs (tailing): 10mls

Bruce Donald - Dannevirke In October Bruce drenched 120 hogget’s with 30ml of palaMOUNTAINS Revive. The average weight at the start of the trial was 32kgs. He re-drenched with 30ml 30 days later and reweighed at 60 days where the average weight was 49.5kg. This was an average of 17.5kg increase, or approximately 300 grams per day.

palaMOUNTAINS Calf Boost® Steele Trial “This season we introduced palaMOUNTAINS Calf Boost® product to all the calves we reared (replacement heifers, Herefords and bull calves).” The calves were drenched while feeding on the milk trailer at a rate of 20mls/calf/day for 21 days. Once the calves shifted to once a day feeding, the product was then added to their meal, mixing with hot water and applying over the meal. The calves adapted to the meal blend quite quickly and never got the health check that calves usually get when weaning. Overall the calves on palaMOUNTAINS Calf Boost product had shiny, smooth and a lot darker coats, this helped when it came to local pet day winning both senior and junior champion calves. We found all the calves reached their target weights quicker than previous years which allowed us to sell the bull calves 2 weeks earlier. By weaning the calves 14 days early, we saved feeding 63 litres of milk per calf!

By weaning the calves 14 days early, we saved feeding 63 litres of milk per calf!

We will be using this product again this year and recommend other farms try it to see the benefits for themselves. - Regards, Robert & Kelly Steele South Taranaki

Geoff Murdoch Trial At one stage in September we had 29 cows on the ground with acidosis... - this resulting in a 30% milk reduction for the September/October period. palaMOUNTAINS Revive product was sprayed on the silage in the feed pad to the cows. After two weeks (see ‘after’ photo) the stock seemed to blossom, coats looked good and their hooves were shiny... something we had never seen before. The most interesting observation was what I called “the perfect poo” - that is it must have the consistency of good porridge with three circles. This is normally seen in autumn when a good balance of feed and stock contentment is achieved. This was seen in the yard and the paddocks. - Geoff Murdoch Heronslea Farm, Wanganui

Folic Acid (B9) • Unless fed in a protected form, Folic Acid supplied in the feed is almost totally destroyed in the rumen. • Research has proven that the demands of fetal growth precalving out strip the rumen’s ability to produce Folic Acid. • Essential for general metabolism, including protein synthesis, Folic acid is required for the production red and white blood cells. Riboflavin (B2) • Riboflavin is extensively degraded in the rumen. • Has a role in energy metabolism and growth. A note about Vitamin E: • Is an antioxidant and thereby permits cells to maintain their natural defences. • Approximately half of vitamin E supplied in feed is destroyed by rumen microbial flora.

Frequently asked questions: Don’t cows produce their own B vitamins? The microbes of the rumen produce many B complex vitamins in quantities that are sufficient for moderate levels of production. Numerous studies have shown performance and health benefits to supplementation of B complex vitamins. During periods of stress, low or erratic feed intake or during high demands (high milk production) rumen microbial production may not be sufficient to meet demands. Are the vitamins in palaMOUNTAINS MAX Plus safe if fed at higher levels? The vitamins in palaMOUNTAINS MAX Plus have a wide margin of safety when fed to lactating, non-lactating dairy cows, replacement heifers, calves and bulls.

Stamp out disease and Revive your stock Controlling Vitamins, Minerals and Amino acids in dairy production.

One of the main problems faced by cattle raising are metabolic diseases. Many of these diseases are of nutritional origin, besides the stressful effect for animal overexploitation, and the high production requirements that cause that nutritional support is not sufficient. Faced with this problem, a correct formulation of the ration, as well as a supplementation with minerals, vitamins and amino acids becomes essential. Amino acids are the precursor molecules of proteins, and must be properly provided to the animal, because a single amino acid unbalance causes a general unbalance of all essential amino acids. Methionine is the main limiting amino acid of dairy production, which suplementation stimulates the synthesis of milk components, especially of protein and fat. Histidine is an amino acid related to the repair of muscle and cardiac tissue, and promotes hematopoiesis and is a limiting amino acid in the dairy production but on a smaller scale than methionine. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid with specific effects on food intake and weight gain, especially in the initial phase of production. Minerals play an important role in all metabolism, while they do not provide energy in the diet, they are essential for the synthesis and utilisation of many essential nutrients. Sodium is intimately related to water metabolism at cellular level as well as in nutrient uptake, maintains osmotic pressure, regulates the acid-base balance and acts in the transmission of nerve impulses. Usually a lower sodium level can be observed during lactation due to the secretion of milk, in rapidly growing animals or in conditions of constant water loss. Iron is a major component of hemoglobin, myoglobin and cytochrome, therefore it becomes a limiting factor for cellular respiration; that is why its deficiency produces anemia and relative changes in blood, with a concomitant loss of appetite and weight. Iron is also part of important enzymes, so its deficiency produces alterations in metabolism and can reduce resistance to infections. Cobalt is a mineral required for the synthesis of Vitamin B12 by ruminal microorganisms, so its deficiency is closely related to growth, weight gain and the appearance of anemias. Vitamins are compounds that cannot be synthesized by the body and function as catalysts for the reactions of all physiological processes. Among the most important vitamins are the ones of B complex. The most important vitamin of B complex is cobalamin (Vitamin B12), which is intimately linked in the synthesis of DNA and RNA. Cobalamin is essential for red blood cell production, which carry oxygen throughout the body to be used in energy production and ATP. Remethylation of homocysteine to methionine is dependent on cobalamin, since the enzyme methionine synthase needs Vitamin B12 (Fenderson and Bergen, 1975). Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (Niacin) and Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) are related to the release of energy and nutrients assimilation, play an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, and act in the oxidation-reduction reactions. Its deficiencies are associated to anemias, weakness and neuromuscular disorders, digestive problems, dermatological, among others.

that were dosed with a commercial solution based on minerals, vitamins and amino acids (Hematofos B12®) recovered their normal production after 24 hours, in contrast to the ones not dosed which delayed 72 hours to normalise its production. It has also been found that the application of minerals with complex B vitamins and amino acids (Hematofos B12®), increases by more than 19% the dairy production when applied weekly to cows in beginning of lactating (0 to 10 days postpartum). Olivera concluded that the use of a commercial injectable solution based on minerals, amino acids and vitamins (Hematofos B12®) increases significantly the productivity up to 952 grams of milk, besides the maintenance of body condition of cows in production after a period of 42 days with a weekly application. Another study found that the application during 90 days of this combination (Hematofos B12®) in improved cattle raised under an extensive production system in the region of Iquitos in Peru, can generate up to 54% increase on weight gain. It is concluded so, that under periods of stress, illness, poor nutrition or unhelpful conditions for intake or absorption of these nutrients such as shepherding in unfavorable areas, the administration of a supplement that provides the listed nutrients can be of great help in improving and maintaining the production of our dairy cattle.

SELENIUM Selenium deficiency is commonly associated with poor growth and infertility in spite of good feeding levels. Selenium and Vitamin E deficiency are normally associated with a weakened immune system, less tolerance to stress and are characterised by white muscle disease in both calves and sheep. This condition often appears as a result of the animal’s mother having low vitamin E and / or low Selenium reserves during pregnancy. The Selenium-responsive condition of poor fertility is most often due to poor conception, and a high incidence of early embryonic deaths. A deficiency of Selenium can result in a higher incidence of retained foetal membranes, and because of its role in immunity; an increase in somatic cell counts and mastitis can result.

COPPER Copper deficiency in livestock can be primary (low dietary Copper levels) or secondary. Secondary deficiency occurs when interaction between copper and other elements reduces the absorption and availability of copper from the diet. Molybdenum and sulphur are the two most important elements in secondary copper deficiency, but Iron (soil contamination of pasture), Zinc (drenching for eczema) and others also play a role. Typically Copper deficiency results in a combination of the following symptoms: • Intermittent scouring • Light tinge to the coat, especially around the eyes • High empty rate in cows • Weak bones in growing animals. Sheep can still have a significant requirement for Copper even when pasture levels are adequate because: • Zinc drenching in late summer and autumn depletes the ewe’s copper reserves. • Foetal demand is increasing. • Pasture copper levels tend to decrease during winter, while molybdenum and sulphur levels tend to increase. • Break feeding can result in high soil and therefore iron intake by the ewe. • If total dry matter intake is restricted, so copper intake is restricted. • Stress increases requirements.

COBALT Cobalt in ruminants is required for the production of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is formed in the rumen by micro-organisms, so it is necessary for stock to continually ingest cobalt in the feed. There is no significant storage of Cobalt within the animals so requirements have to be met by daily intake, but the vitamin B12 once it is produced can be stored in the liver. The main role in Vitamin B12 is in energy and amino-acid metabolism. Symptoms of a deficiency include: • Poor growth rates • Rough bleached hair on coats • Scouring • Poor milk production • Anaemia Methods of supplementation include application in fertiliser, drenching, licks and injecting with Vitamin B12. Demand may be increased during periods of stress.

ZINC The role of Zinc in protecting stock from facial eczema is well established. Zinc is also an important constituent of a large number of enzymes affecting protein synthesis, immunity and also maintaining epithelial tissues (skin and membranes). As there is no significant store of zinc in the body, zinc requirements have to be met by a daily intake. Pasture Zinc levels can vary considerably from one region to another, but are generally considered to be above the minimum requirement provided stock are well fed. During periods of stress when immunity is usually depressed, there may be an increased requirement for trace elements including Zinc. Supplementing with Zinc during the transition period (3 weeks pre-calving to 3 weeks postcalving), has been shown in some trials to assist in maintaining a healthy immune system and reducing the incidence of mastitis, uterine infections, etc. Zinc has also been shown in some trial work to reduce the incidence of certain lameness conditions and lowers somatic cell counts in some herds. It is likely more time will be spent on focussing on the role of Zinc and other trace minerals in immunity. Signs of deficiency of Zinc can also include reduced dry matter intakes and poor feed conversion efficiency. Hair can be lost around the mouth and eyes and there can be stiffness in the joints. Skin can eventually become thickened and scaly. Lower conception rates have also been noted in many herds.

IODINE The role of Iodine in mammals is in the formation of the thyroid hormones. These hormones have a significant impact on the growth and development of the foetus, and protein and energy production in general. Symptoms in the newborn include goitre, blindness, hairlessness, and the birth of weak or stillborn calves and lambs. In older stock deficiency can result in depressed wool and milk production, suppressed heats and poor reproductive performances. Stock ingesting goitrogenic feeds such as Brassicas, Soya beans, and others will have an increased iodine requirement.

PalaMountains can produce custom blends based on your veterinarian blood tests to compensate for deficiencies.

most multi-vitamins are quite unstable to the heating used for pet food manufacture and in the cases of ascorbic acid, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine these heating regimes may destroy between 75-100% of the activity of these essential vitamins.
