A fruit and vegetable stand in a market. A greengrocer sets up her stand and spots an egg in a cabbage. A caterpillar hatches out and as it discovers the world around it and observes the flight of a bumble bee and a plane, it wishes it could fly too. Try as it might, it doesn´t succeed… or will it? Fly Away is a puppetry show ideal for chidren ages 1 to 8. The puppets and the elements in the show are made from socks and wool, using amigurumi, a Japanese crochet technique. The puppeteer is in sight of the audience so she can interact with the puppets and the children! The show includes a workpack and a CD of songs for teachers to prepare in class beforehand so children may sing-along during the show. Our aim is to capture the children´s imaginations with the puppetry so English language learning becomes a motivating, fun and educational experience. Duration: 40 mins

Script, puppeteer and puppet construction: Emilia Lang Drama advisor: Edu Blanch. Songs: Sue Correa and Julie Langstaff (English is fun when it´s sung!) Amigurumi: Begoña Rodriguez

Dear teacher, We are happy to present Fly Away! a puppetry show for very young learners with original songs and handmade props, based on a story about a caterpillar that wishes to fly, but after a few tries, realizes it can´t. Our aim is to capture the children´s imaginations with the puppetry so English language learning becomes a motivating, fun and educational experience. There will be a brief introduction in Catalan if desired to prepare the children to listen to English. In this workpack you will find a CD with 7 original songs. There are a series of activities related to different parts of the story, in order to prepare the pupils and pre-teach the vocabulary, the simple language structures and, more importantly, the songs that appear in the show, so the children may sing-along and interact. Photocopiable worksheets and general tips are also included in this pack. We hope you enjoy using the materials, singing the songs and participating in the show! English is fun when it´s sung!

General tips Choose an activity and feel free to alter it according to the pupils´ needs and cognitive level. Most of the songs are action songs. Do the action as you listen to the song. Play the CD as background music whilst pupils complete the worksheets and crafts. In this way they will be learning the songs without even realizing so. Use the flashcards not only as a teaching aid, but for the children to colour and play with. These songs are also ideal for use in other topics and areas of language. Flashcards may be photocopied and enlarged if so desired.

Stars Mime the twinkling stars to catch pupils´ attention. Play the Stars song (track 7). Draw some stars on the blackboard and point as you sing to the song. The “knock knock” song. Just use the 1st 2 lines of the song and mime (i.e knock, knock, knock, knock, 1, 2, ,3, 4). This activity may be also useful to present language in any of your lessons. Use an opaque box (could be a shoe box) and place an object or toy animal of your choice. Sing the lines and open the box to reveal what´s inside. The aim is for the children to learn these lines so that they accompany the puppeteer whilst singing this song during the show. Butterfly egg Fold the sheet in two. Child decorates the egg, then draws a baby caterpillar on the rear side of this sheet. Cut egg along the marked line and open to reveal caterpillar. Encourage the children to sing the “knock knock” song with their finished egg Butterfly life cycle worksheet Children colour the scenes and cut out to put in the right order. I can fly! “I can fly” is an action song. Do the actions as you listen to the song. Children can do the related worksheet on page 4.

I like fruit song Once you have learnt the song, use the karaoke part to sing “I like cabbage / carrots / pears / tomatoes,” (these are the fruit and vegetables that appear in the show). Butterfly fly fly fly! Cut out the butterfly on (page 7). Fold it in half. Place it in a mystery bag which will represent a cocoon. Sing “I can fly, fly, fly” (CD track 4) or the Butterfly song (CD track 6) softly and make the paper butterfly flutter around you. Make the butterfly fly to different parts of the room. Encourage the children to follow you around the classroom, miming butterflies with their hands. Perhaps choose just one or two children to mime butterflies. Everyone can be invited to participate once you are confident of controlling the children in such an activity. Hand out the butterfly worksheets for pupils to colour and cut out, fold in the middle and make it fly by twitching your thumb and index finger. Or better still, hand out a blank sheet of paper and pupils can design their own butterfly.
