and Give New Life to Someone You Love There are millions struggling to escape the isolation of dementia. Please help them feel alive again through MUSIC & MEMORY℠. Juniper Communities and Music & Memory are committed to getting personalized playlists and music in the hands and hearts of as many elders as possible. Here’s how you can help:  Donate a gently used iPod. We’re most interested in collecting iPod Shuffles, but any well-cared for iPod will be greatly appreciated.  Donate $49 to purchase a new iPod Shuffle.  Donate an iTunes gift card. These start at $15 and make a very affordable contribution.  Donate new, comfortable over the ear headphones. We cannot accept used headphones. But we do appreciate receiving iPod connector cords however. Any of the above items can be dropped off or mailed to any Juniper Village community. A self-addressed label is included in your donor kit. Upon receipt of your donation we will provide you with a tax receipt. We will first provide donated equipment to our residents – your loved ones! Any additional items will be sent directly to Music & Memory to be provided to other seniors in need. Or if you prefer, you may make a monetary donation directly to Music & Memory at https://musicandmemory.org/donate-now/. Either way, know that your donation is helping to make this miraculous form of personalized, therapeutic music the gold standard in elder care throughout the U.S. and beyond. Thank you for your support.

Juniper Communities presents film screening of documentary - Alive Inside; Unveils Music & Memory program; Learn 12 reasons music is essential in the lives of elders and those suffering with memory loss January 8, 2015 - This month, Juniper Communities unveils in its Juniper Village Wellspring Memory Care communities programming that targets the use of music in aiding residents suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. “Juniper is investing heavily in this initiative that we believe will make a positive impact in our residents’ and other elders’ lives,” explains Lynne Katzmann, CEO and Founder of Juniper. “We are sponsoring the screening of the documentary film Alive Inside, an uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind in people suffering from dementia; implementing the Music & Memory program for which all of our Wellspring communities have received certification; and creating personalized playlists, collecting donations of iPods and MP3 Players to be given away to the elderly, and hosting lectures on the benefits of music for the elderly. All these events are open to the public.” Twelve reasons why music is essential in the lives of elders, and those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia       

Published reports increasingly document that music has a healing effect on patients By re-connecting elders with their favorite music, it can vastly improve quality of life regardless of a person’s cognitive or physical status Music is especially powerful for those with Alzheimer’s Disease, where it can restore, temporarily but repeatedly, the sense of self often lost when memory fails It can relieve boredom, empower choice, enable memory, and provide avenues for genuine communication with loved ones and caregivers Music improves mood and behavior, it can reduce or eliminate agitation, provide restoration of identity and increase socialization Music provides the opportunity for intergenerational, engaging conversations Music can induce a state of relaxation and can help offset depression, anxiety and fatigue Personalized music provides a means of communication and self-expression when verbal language abilities are diminished

   

Musical favorites replace confusing environmental stimuli with something interpretable; personalized playlists distract from boredom or distress with a soothing, familiar experience. Personalized music provides a valuable tool for the effort to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic, anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications Vocal singing incorporates deep breathing thereby improving breathing capacity, muscle tension, posture, and the reduction of some respiratory symptoms The medical profession strongly believes that singing is a good form of aerobic exercise for the abdominal muscles, the lungs and circulation of blood

Juniper is an early adopter of the Music & Memory program and will serve as a coach and mentor to other care facilities and caregivers seeking to implement it. The Music & Memory program’s approach trains elder care professionals to set up personalized music playlists, delivered by iPods and other digital devices, for those in their care. These musical favorites tap deep memories and can bring residents back to life, enabling them to feel like themselves again, to converse, socialize and stay present. The Music & Memory program has the potential to decrease the need for PRN antianxiety medications, and possibly pain medications since the elderly will be less focused on their pain when actively engaged in listening to music. All Juniper Village Wellspring Communities are certified in the Music & Memory program.

Scheduled Events Free and Open to the Community Alive Inside Documentary Film Screening Alive Inside is a stirring documentary that follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Visits with family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones are in the film along with illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and bestselling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”). Alive Inside is an uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind. It is an inspirational and emotional story that left the audience humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Audience Award. The film dramatically portrays the power of music and memory. Refreshments will be served following the screening.

MUSIC: THE MAGIC HEALER Join Juniper Village for an educational session featuring Jessica Mull, certified music therapist.
