LEGAL SERVICES FOR CHILDREN

History

4

Founded in 1975, LSC is one of the country’s first non-profit law firms dedicated to representing children and youth. We pioneered the model of multidisciplinary holistic advocacy that is considered best practice in children’s legal services today. Vision

All children should be raised in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment with equal access to meaningful education and other services that are necessary to thrive and grow. Our youth deserve positive alternatives to unnecessary placement in foster care, juvenile justice facilities, and immigration detention. Approach

Our young clients may be assigned by the court, referred by a caring adult, or they may come to us on their own, via a phone call or by visiting a drop-in clinic. When we open a case, we assign an attorney and social worker who function as a team and tap into diverse community resources to address the interconnecting concerns of every client—legal, physical, social, psychological, economic, and educational. We empower our young clients to take active roles in their cases and the critical decisions that affect their lives. Our Clients

Each year we respond to 1,500 requests for information and referrals, and handle over 500 newly opened or continuing client cases involving foster care, guardianship, emancipation, school expulsion, and immigration matters. The majority of our clients are children of color and half speak a primary language other than English.

Toni Rembe

Retired Partner, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP President, van Löben Sels/RembeRock Foundation As an attorney, Toni Rembe is a trailblazer – the first female partner at a major law firm, a director on international corporate boards, and an awards recipient several times over for her influential and savvy business expertise. But her commitment to helping disfranchised individuals and communities has shined just as bright and made a significant impact here in the Bay Area and beyond. Hailing from Seattle, Toni worked hard to climb the ladder in a male-dominated profession. She began her tenure at Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro (now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP) in 1964 and was pleasantly surprised to feel the support of the partners and encouragement of her growing expertise in tax practice. In 1971, Toni became the first female partner at Pillsbury Winthrop. She remained with the firm until her retirement in December 2004, representing a number of major corporations on Federal and California tax matters with special emphasis in the construction industry and international tax planning. Never one to stop broadening her horizons, Toni joined her first corporate board of directors in her late 30s – which opened doors to other opportunities on the boards of AT&T, AEGON N.V., and Transamerica. She’s been a steady voice advocating for more diversity in law firms and corporate boards for decades now. She has also served as a mentor to young women lawyers and as an occasional bridge between female and male colleagues. Her advice for women is to support each other and to find their voices. “Women have smaller voice boxes,” she commented in September 2011 for The Reporter. “I used to talk too rapidly thinking nobody wanted to hear what I had to say…Then I learned to just take a deep breath — and do it.” Her voice and determination led her to a Sandra Day O’Connor Board Excellence Award in 2008, and being named one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Business by the San Francisco Business Times in 2005.

LEADERSHIP AWARD HONOREE

Toni’s advocacy for women and equality in the workplace helped shape her philanthropic ventures, including her current involvement with the van Löben Sels/RembeRock Foundation. As president of this private foundation, she has helped thousands of underserved residents and communities in Northern California. Founded through the will of Ernst van Löben Sels after his death in 1965, Toni has been a director on the Board since day one and has served as chair since 1994. Under her leadership, the foundation’s focus on public interest law, juvenile justice reform, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, and community-based programs in remote, rural communities has been daringly progressive. Today the foundation contributes over $2 million annually to organizations providing services ranging from housing for homeless teens to educational opportunities for incarcerated adults to free legal and social work services for low-income children. LSC is grateful to have been a partner of the van Löben Sels/RembeRock Foundation from our earliest days when the Ernest D. van Löben Sels Charitable Foundation stepped up in 1975, providing seed monies to our newly incorporated organization when it was the emerging vision of our founder, Carole Brill. Toni is also a director and former board chair of Presidio Graduate School and co-founder and advisory board member of the Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University. In addition, she held the titles of president for The Commonwealth Club of California and co-chair of Women Corporate Directors International. The staff and Board of LSC are proud to present our Leadership Award to Toni Rembe, in recognition of her extraordinary life’s work as a philanthropist and leader, promoting social justice through both public interest law and education.

Arthur Rock

Principal, Arthur Rock & Co. Arthur Rock, a man who has found tremendous success as one of the first venture capitalist in the U.S., is also a man dedicated to restoring the balance of wealth and opportunity to all members of our community. Born in Rochester, NY, he moved to San Francisco in 1961 after earning his bachelors and masters in business and proving his ability to turn small technology companies into major innovators. Arthur once described the role of a venture capitalist as someone who hunts for entrepreneurial dreamers possessed of “the potential to change the world.” He analyzed the potential of a young company by focusing on the entrepreneur. “People, people, people,” said Arthur, in describing how he chooses companies to invest in. From 1961 to 1968, he was a partner at Davis & Rock before going solo with Arthur Rock & Co. He was also the chairman of the Board of Scientific Data Systems and a member of the Board of Directors of Teledyne Inc., Xerox, Argonaut Insurance, Apple Computer, AirTouch, the Nasdaq Stock Market, and Echelon Corporation. And he was one of the founders of the Intel Corporation and served as Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Executive Committee, and lead director. As an advocate for educational advancement and entrepreneurial opportunities, Arthur has served as trustee of the Visiting Committee of the Harvard Business School and the California Institute of Technology. He is also a recipient of the Medal of Achievement of the American Electronics Association, the Lifetime Achievement in Entrepreneurship & Innovation Award from the University of California, and the Northern California Business Leader of the Year from the Harvard Business School Association. He has been inducted into the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame, the California Business Hall of Fame, the Bay Area Business Council Hall of Fame, and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

LEADERSHIP AWARD HONOREE

In the mid-2000’s Arthur invested significantly in higher education for future attorneys and business leaders by founding the Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship at the Harvard Business School and the Arthur & Toni Rembe Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University – an institute designed to advance the understanding and practice of corporate governance in a cross-disciplinary environment where leading academics, business leaders, policy makers, practitioners, and regulators can meet and work together. He also co-founded and is now president emeritus of The Basic Fund which gives scholarships to inner city children to attend K-8 private schools. He serves on the board of Teach for America and Children’s Scholarship Fund and is an active funder of the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP), a national network of free, openenrollment, college-preparatory public schools preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. As far back as 1970 Arthur has spent time advising minority businesspeople. In 1998, he told Forbes, “Most successful men and women give generously to their universities, but it seems to me that those gifts increase the distance between the haves and the have-nots. We need to be doing something about inner-city education at early levels.” LSC is delighted to honor Arthur Rock with our Leadership Award, in recognition of his philanthropic endeavors and his commitment to social justice and equality.

LEGAL SERVICES FOR CHILDREN

PRO BONO PARTNER HONOREES

14

Last year four law firms stood out from a distinguished crowd of firms that partner with LSC. They showed extraordinary commitment to Bay Area children by enthusiastically encouraging and supporting pro bono service with LSC among their attorneys. We are delighted to honor all of them today with the 2012 Pro Bono Partner Awards. Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP is a full-service law firm, with over 1,000 lawyers in 17 offices worldwide.  Our lawyers routinely represent clients in some of the most complex matters all over the world.  In 2012, The American Lawyer named Gibson Dunn its “Litigation Department of the Year,” based on the firm’s work for both pro bono clients and commercial clients.  Gibson Dunn is proud of its longstanding tradition of service to the community, and we feel privileged to work with fantastic organizations such as Legal Services for Children. www.gibsondunn.com Established in 1958, Hanson Bridgett is one of Northern California’s mainstays. Our clients include multinational Fortune 500 corporations, individuals, and public agencies. The firm’s 150-plus attorneys, located in San Francisco, the North Bay, Sacramento, Silicon Valley, and the East Bay, practice law in a way that understands our clients’ businesses. We are dedicated to providing pro bono services to individuals, organizations, and businesses that cannot afford the cost of high-quality legal representation. Our attorneys handle a wide range of pro bono litigation and transactional matters with the same drive and commitment we bring to all of our client work. www.hansonbridget.com

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP stands for one principle: the belief that the best lawyers bring the same level of talent, enthusiasm, and commitment to serving our communities as we do to representing their commercial clients. Manatt’s achievements are paralleled by extraordinary pro bono accomplishments— work for organizations and individuals who need the talent and commitment of lawyers dedicated to making a better world. Last year, more than 300 Manatt professionals collectively dedicated more than 23,000 hours to pro bono matters. More importantly, each of those hours translated into positive change on a human level. www.manatt.com Paul Hastings is a leading international law firm that provides innovative legal solutions to many of the world’s top financial institutions and Fortune Global 500 companies. With 19 offices across Asia, Europe, and the U.S., we have the global reach and extensive capabilities to provide personalized service wherever our clients’ needs take us. Last year, over 96% of our U.S.-based lawyers dedicated 20 hours or more to pro bono work, totaling over 100,000 hours of free legal service to the community. In total, Paul Hastings donated over $60 million in monetary gifts and in-kind contributions, positively affecting a wide range of social causes including education, healthcare, children and family services, arts and culture, and the environment. We are proud of our achievements and are grateful for the opportunity to help others. www.paulhastings.com

PRO BONO ADVOCATE HONOREES

16

The following recipients of the 2012 Pro Bono Advocate Awards were selected for diverse reasons—devoting long hours of service or taking on multiple cases, stepping up for a particularly challenging case, employing innovative legal strategies, or going “above and beyond the call of duty” in a notable way. Whatever the nature of the case or the situation of the client, each of these attorneys has made a life-changing contribution to the well-being of a child and we are proud to salute them today. Rebecca Marie Biernet is an attorney in Tucker Ellis LLP’s Trial Department. She currently specializes in pharmaceutical litigation, and has broad experience with general products liability, environmental, and mass tort litigation. Rebecca received her law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Her pro bono work for LSC has consisted of an appeal of a denial of a Special Immigrant Juvenile Visa, an application for SIJS, and an asylum case representing three children from El Salvador. Working on these pro bono immigration matters has been some of the most personally rewarding experiences of Rebecca’s 13-year legal career. She lives in San Francisco with her husband, 18-monthold daughter Rachel, and 8-year-old stepson Jack. When not at one of Jack’s soccer games, the family can be found biking through Golden Gate Park and playing at Ocean Beach. Stephen Johnson is a partner in the San Francisco office of Nixon Peabody, where he heads its Aviation Litigation Team. They work with their clients to help implement systems and conduct training in efforts to prevent aircraft accidents, but then represent them when accidents do occur. Steve has been involved with many significant matters including serving as lead US defense counsel for the manufacturers of the Concorde aircraft following the crash outside Paris in 2000. He has also successfully represented Air France before the U.S. Supreme Court. Steve is an avid skier and rower, and still competes nationally and internationally with the Marin Masters Rowing Team. While he has had many successes

during his long career, Steve says that one of the very most rewarding came earlier this year in the guardianship work he did with LSC. Two remarkable young women had unexpectedly lost their mother two days before Christmas and sought guardianship with their Godmother, which was resisted by their father who had had no contact with them for the past ten years. The guardianship was obtained and the girls, who are excellent students, were able to remain in their local schools. Steve says that their bravery and strength, and the kindness of their Godmother, were an inspiration to him. Roni Dina Pomerantz is currently a Deputy District Attorney for the county of Santa Clara, and was formerly a litigation associate with Shartsis Friese LLP in San Francisco. She received her bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley and her law degree from UCLA. Roni’s work with LSC has focused on securing visas and representing minors in deportation proceedings. Her work has included successfully obtaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status for a minor subject to abuse and neglect in his home country, and representing a minor who was the victim of assault while in detention in the Bay Area. She has thoroughly enjoyed her work with LSC and considers it to be one of the most meaningful aspects of her practice. In addition to her work with LSC, Roni is a volunteer with SF CASA and an active member of the Queen’s Bench.

LSC coordinates and supports a panel of 200 attorneys throughout the San Francisco Bay Area who represent youth on a pro bono basis in guardianship, school discipline and immigration cases. Last year these advocates handled 90 cases and collectively contributed over 2,500 hours of legal service valued at $1.7 million. This powerful force of legal volunteers significantly increases LSC’s capacity to serve the Bay Area’s most vulnerable youth. No experience in LSC’s practice areas is required as each volunteer attorney receives training as well as ongoing technical assistance from LSC’s experienced staff attorneys. In-house corporate counsel are encouraged to join. For more information please contact Kirsten Strobel at 415-863-3762, ext 320 or [email protected]. Keith Wurster Angela C. Vigil
