ABOUT THE THORNTON W. BURGESS SOCIETY Founded in 1976, the Thornton W. Burgess Society is a non-profit educational organization chartered to carry on the pioneering work of author-naturalist Thornton Burgess [1874 - 1965] “to inspire reverence for wildlife and concern for the natural environment.” Mr. Burgess, who was born and grew up in Sandwich, MA, went on to achieve national and international recognition. His children’s stories still teach lessons of conservation and love of wildlife to generations of young people. Since 1978 the Burgess Society has been providing science related classes and programs for area children at its Green Briar Nature Center. Its programs for preschools and grades K to 6 are the most extensive in the Upper Cape area. The Society provides both in-house and outreach programs in the natural sciences and environmental studies. Our award winning Project LIFE (Lessons in Field Ecology) program services grades 4,5 and 6,7 in three area school districts plus two high schools. Students study “Life in the Forest, Pond and Salt Marsh.” Our enrichment programs are available to schools from Plymouth to Hyannis and beyond as are our ten circulating Science Kits. The classes and kits are designed to supplement the science curriculum. The Society also presents several family oriented special events, hosts changing exhibits, plus activities in its wildflower garden and historic Jam Kitchen for adults. Our Green Briar Jam Kitchen is America’s oldest Jam Kitchen. Ever since Ida Putnam began the Jam Kitchen in 1903, visitors have come to Green Briar to savor the aromas of fresh fruits cooking on the stove or in the heat of the sun. Today the Jam Kitchen is a “living museum” where visitors may view the cooking process first-hand. The kitchen still operates using Ida’s recipes and preparing the jams, jellies, relishes and pickles the “old fashioned way” without any preservatives. Green Briar’s sun-cooked preserves are cooked slowly and gently in the oldest commercial solar-cooking operation in the country. Our popular jam classes for adults and families are held throughout the year on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Society depends upon the support of its members and friends nationwide to carry on its educational programs. For more information about the many programs and events, please visit www.thorntonburgess.org. 8
