The Painter Thinking Even during the artist's lifetime, contemporary art lovers considered Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) to be an exceptional artist. In this revelatory sequel to the acclaimed Rembrandt: The Painter at Work, renowned Rembrandt authority Ernst van de Wetering investigates precisely why the artist, from a very early age, was praised by prominent connoisseurs. This gorgeously illustrated book explores how Rembrandt achieved mastery by systematic exploration of the 'foundations of the art of painting'. According to written sources from the seventeenth century, which were up until now often misinterpreted, these 'foundations' were considered essential at that time. From his first endeavours in painting, Rembrandt embarked on a journey past these foundations, thus becoming the 'pittore famoso', whom Count Cosimo the Medici visited at the end of his life. Rembrandt never stopped searching for solutions to the pictorial problems that confronted him; this led over time to radical changes that cannot simply be attributed to stylistic evolution or natural development. In a quest as rigorous and novel as the artist's, Van de Wetering reveals how Rembrandt became the best painter the world had ever seen. This ground breaking exploration reconstructs Rembrandt's closely guarded theories and methods, shedding new light both on the artist's exceptional accomplishments and on the practice of painting in the Dutch Golden Age. Ernst van de Wetering (1938) is emeritus professor of art history. He became a team-member of the Rembrandt Research Project in 1968 and its chairman in 1993. Originally trained as a painter and art-historian, he taught at the University of Amsterdam from 1987-2002. In 2003/4 he was Slade Professor in Oxford. He is considered one of the world's foremost specialists on Rembrandt and his work. In 1997, he published the widely acclaimed monograph Rembrandt: The Painter at Work (2nd ed. 2008).

Rembrandt. The Painter at Work is written by a scholar with a broad experience in several fields and a rare constellation of talents. This helps explain the book’s appeal to a wide variety of readers and users: artists, art historians, conservators/restorers, students, as well as Photo: Willem Diepraam art lovers and laymen. Ernst van de Wetering (b. 1938), emeritus professor of art history at the University of Amsterdam, was initially trained as an artist. He worked for 18 years (1969-1987) together with scientists and restorers at the Dutch Central Laboratory for Art and Science. Since 1968 he has been deeply involved in the investigation of paintings by Rembrandt and the painters around him in the context of the famous Rembrandt Research Project, whose Chairman and most active author he has been since 1993. He has contributed essential chapters and catalogue texts for four volumes of A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings and numerous essays in catalogues for Rembrandt exhibitions, some of which he conceived himself. Rembrandt. The Painter at Work is a book that demonstrates profound empathy with the artistic endeavours of a great artist. But it is not only a book about Rembrandt; it is also a synthesis of Van de Wetering’s experience and is unique in its combination of depth and breadth of insight into the genesis of works of art. It provides an exemplary frame for an approach to the study of any painter, as well as being an eye-opener for contemporary painters with an interest in the technical traditions of their art. The book is used by a growing number of universities all over the world. On the one hand, it gives students of art history as well as those in the field of conservation access both to historical studio practice in general and to the interrelationships between craft and creativity. On the other hand, it provides a most

valuable insight into the possibilities of scholarly as well as scientific methods to gain a deeper understanding of the art of painting. For these reasons this book is already a classic and will remain an ‘evergreen’ text that will be read and used by generations to come.

Rembrandt About the book

“Who would not have wanted to look over Rembrandt’s shoulder while he painted? Among the countless books on Rembrandt, that by Ernst van de Wetering comes closest to conveying something of this experience because the author combines the qualifications of a trained connoisseur and of a practising painter.”

The Painter at Work ERNST GOMBRICH

“Ernst van de Wetering’s wonderful book has taken us further than almost any study over the past twenty years, towards an understanding of the machinery of Rembrandt’s genius. No one attempting to write about Rembrandt in the future will be able to do so without taking this fine work into account.”

Power Politics

The Meaning of Music

How China and Russia Reshape the World

For virtually all of our lives, we are surrounded by music. From lullabies to radio to the praises sung in houses of worship, we encounter music at home and in the street, during work and in our leisure time, and not infrequently at birth and death. But what is music, and what does it mean to humans? How do we process it, and how do we create it? Musician Leo Samama discusses these and many other questions while shaping a vibrant picture of music’s importance in human lives both past and present. What is remarkable is that music is recognised almost universally as a type of language that we can use to wordlessly communicate. We can hardly shut ourselves off from music, and considering its primal role in our lives, it comes as no surprise that few would ever want to. Able to transverse borders and appeal to the most disparate of individuals, music is both a tool and a gift, and as Samama shows, a unifying thread running throughout the cultural history of mankind.

We tend to think of ourselves as living in a time when nations, for the most part, obey the rule of law — and where they certainly don’t engage in the violent grabs for territory that have characterised so much of human history. But as Rob de Wijk shows in this book, power politics very much remains a force on the international scene. Offering analyses of such actions as Putin’s annexation of the Crimea and China’s attempts to claim large parts of the South China Sea, de Wijk explains why power politics never truly went away—and why, as the West’s position weakens, it’s likely to play a bigger and bigger role on the global stage in the coming years. Rob de Wijk is the director of the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies and professor of international relations and security at Leiden University.

Kyiv, Ukraine The City of Domes and Demons from the Collapse of Socialism to the Mass Uprising of 2013-2014

The unrest and violence in Ukraine in recent years shocked the world, and the region’s long-term future remains troublingly uncertain. Focusing on the difficulty of Kiev’s transition from socialism to market democracy, this book demonstrates how Ukraine reached this turbulent point. Roman Adrian Cybriwsky delves deeply into the changing social geography of the city, recent urban development, and critical problems such as official corruption, inequality, sex tourism, and the heedless destruction of the city’s historical architecture — all difficulties that have contributed incrementally to Ukrainian citizens’ anger against their government. This thoroughly revised edition brings Cybriwsky’s account of events and

Building Musical Culture in NineteenthCentury Amsterdam The Concertgebouw When people attend classical music concerts today, they sit and listen in silence, offering no audible reactions to what they’re hearing. We think of that as normal—but, as Darryl Cressman shows in this book, it’s the product of a long history of interrelationships between music, social norms, and technology. Using the example of Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw in the nineteenth century, Cressman shows how its design was in part intended to help discipline and educate concert audiences to listen attentively — and analysis of its creation and use offers rich insights into sound studies, media history,

THE ART OF AUDIT

¾

On the occasion of the retirement of Saskia J. Stuiveling as the president of the Netherlands Court of Audit, eight former heads of audit institutions took to the stage to talk candidly about their work. Topics covered included innovations in the field, the effects of the financial crisis on their profession, changes resulting from the open data movement, and the need for new skills to audit the oil industry. This book presents their discussion, offering a snapshot of the current state of the profession at its highest levels.

Sonic Time Machines Explicit Sound, Sirenic Voices, and Implicit Sonicity Our studies of aesthetics and knowledge have long tended to privilege the visual — at the expense, Wolfgang Ernst argues, of the aural. Sonic Time Machines aims to correct that, presenting a striking new approach to theorising sound that investigates its split existence: as a temporal effect in a technocultural context and as a source of knowledge and information. Ernst creates a new term f or the concept at the heart of the book, “sonicity,” a flexible and powerful term that

allows him to consider sound with all its many physical, philosophical, and cultural valences. Wolfgang Ernst is professor of media theory at the Institute for Musicology and Media Studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin.

How Metaphors Matter in New Media

One of the iconic figures of the twentiethcentury cinema, Eisenstein is best known as the director of The Battleship Potemkin. This comprehensive volume is the first English-language edition of his newly discovered notes for a “general history of the cinema”, a project he undertook during the last two years of his life, in 1946-48. While written in the Soviet Union of the second half of the 1940s, these notes deal with some of the most debated issues in contemporary film and media theory: the status of cinema as a medium, the intermedial relations between cinema, other media and other art forms, the nature and the objectives of film

Transcoding the Digital How Metaphors Matter in New Media examines the role of metaphors in our daily encounters with computers and networks. While concepts such as that of the desktop and the window may be easily recognized, this study reveals the vast wealth of metaphors, ranging from icons and email to Facebook friends, tweets, and cyberspace, that are a part of technology today. These and other metaphors frame how we access the black boxes of software and machinery, which in turn organize and reconfigure society. A wide-ranging examination drawn from theories of metaphor, this book is an innovative treatment of today’s digital media. Marianne van den Boomen (1955–2014) has worked as an editor, journalist, and web designer, and taught new media and digital culture at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Soul of the Documentary offers a groundbreaking new approach to understanding documentary cinema. Working against current thinking, Ilona Hongisto argues that the documentary does more than merely represent what is — by capturing actual people, places, and events — but also expresses realities to come. She makes a case for the form as one that is not bound by predetermined ideas or rules, and through close readings of a heterogeneous body of films, she imbues the tradition with a new sense of urgency and vitality.

Ilona Hongisto is an Academy of Finland Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Turku and an Honorary Fellow at the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne.

PRESERVING AND EXHIBITING MEDIA ART This important and first-of-its-kind collection addresses the emerging challenges in the field of media art preservation and exhibition, providing an outline for the training of professionals in this field. Since the emergence of time-based media such as film, video and digital technology, artists have used them to experiment with their potential. The resulting artworks, with their basis in rapidly developing technologies that cross over into other domains such as broadcasting and social media, have challenged the traditional infrastructures for the collection, preservation and exhibition of art. Addressing these challenges, the authors provide a historical and theoretical survey of the field, and introduce students to the challenges and difficulties of preserving and exhibiting media art through a series of first-hand case studies. Situated at the threshold between archival practices and film and media theory, it also makes a strong contribution to the growing literature on archive theory and archival practices.

Melodrama After the Tears

Humour and Irony in Dutch Post-war Fiction Film

New Perspectives on the Politics of Victimhood In this age of public confession and reality television, melodrama has become a pervasive cultural mode. This volume covers a wide range of melodramatic expression in contemporary life, from the public staging of personal suffering to the emotionalisation and sentimentalisation of national politics, in order to address a key question: if melodramatic models have become so

culturally pervasive, what is the political potential of melodramatic victimhood— and what are its political limitations? Scott Loren and Jörg Metelmann teach film and media studies at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. They are the authors of Irritation of Life: The Subversive Melodrama of Michael Haneke, David Lynch, and Lars von Trier.

Dutch cinema, when discussed, is typically treated only in terms of pre-war films or documentaries, leaving post-war fictional film largely understudied. At the same time, a “Hollandse school,” a term first coined in the 1980s, has developed through deadpan, ironic films like those of director and actor Alex van Warmerdam. Using seminal theories on humour and comedy, this book explores a

Walter Ruttmann and the Cinema of Multiplicity

The Conscience of Cinema

Avant-Garde Film — Advertising — Modernity

The Works of Joris Ivens 1926 – 1989

A key figure in early avant-garde cinema, Walter Ruttmann was a pioneer of experimental animation and the creative force behind one of the silent era’s most celebrated montage films, Berlin: Symphony of a Great City. Yet even as he was making experimental films, Ruttmann had a day job. He worked regularly in advertising —and he would go on to make industrial films, medical films, and even Nazi propaganda films. Michael Cowan offers here the first study of Ruttmann in English, not only shedding light on his commercial, industrial, and propaganda work, but also rethinking his significance in light of recent transformations in film studies. Cowan brilliantly teases out the linkages between the avant-garde and industrial society in the early twentieth century, showing how Ruttmann’s films incorporated and enacted strategies for managing the multiplicities of mass society.

This is the first book to survey the entire career of Joris Ivens, a prolific documentary filmmaker who worked on every continent over the course of seven decades. More than a biography of a leftist committed to changing the world through film, The Conscience of Cinema is also a microcosmic history of the documentary and its form, culture, and place within twentieth-century world cinema. Ivens worked in almost every genre, including the essay, compilation, hybrid dramatization, socialist realism, and more. Whether in his native Netherlands, the Soviet Union, the United States, Vietnam, or beyond, he left an indelible artistic and political mark that continues to resonate in the twenty-first century.

This book compares the British and French histories of the animal-protection movement to retrace its origins and impact up to the present day. As Christophe Traïni shows, the struggle for animal rights — inextricably linked to the rise of philanthropy and established long before the birth of the ecology movement — developed out of several important social

and political processes, including changes in sensibilities and socially approved emotions, new definitions of what constitutes legitimate violence, and the influence of religious beliefs. Christophe Traïni is professor of political science at the Institute of Political Science in Aix-en-Provence.

The place occupied by Kurds in Turkish society has changed remarkably in recent years. Around the turn of the millennium, the Turkish state still denied their very existence, whereas now Kurdish parties are seen as key parts of Turkish political life. This book uses the situation of the Kurds in Turkey as a case study for attempting to understand the conditions that foster nonviolent civic engagement in emerging civil societies. How and why did the Kurds choose participation over rebellion, discarding the violent approach of the PKK and opting instead for organization within the structures of the state? And what can their success teach us about possible ways to encourage similar approaches in other developing democracies?

“An original and very engaging, theoretically informed and compelling account of competing Kurdish social movements in Turkey.” — David Romano, Missouri State University

“A fresh advance and essential for understanding the cycles of violence, repression, and reconciliation."

Bodies in Protest

Street Politics in the Age of Austerity

Research on social movements has historically focused on the traditional weapons of the working class, especially labour strikes and street demonstrations— but everyday actions, such as eating or singing, which can also be turned into a means of protest, have yet to be fully explored. An interdisciplinary and comparative history of these modes of action, Bodies in Protest reveals how hunger strikes and music ranging from gospel songs to rock anthems can efficiently convey political messages and mobilize the masses. Common to both approaches, the contributions show, is a direct appeal to the emotions and a reliance on the physical, concrete language of the human body.

From the Indignados to Occupy The past few years have seen an unexpected resurgence of street-level protest movements around the world, from the uprisings of the Arab Spring to the rise of the anti-austerity Indignados in Spain and Greece to the global spread of the Occupy movement. This collection is designed to offer a comparative analysis of these movements, setting them in international, socio-economic, and cross-cultural perspective in order to help us understand why movements emerge, what they do, how they spread, and how they fit into both local and worldwide historical contexts. As the most significant wave of mass protests in decades continues apace, this book offers an authoritative analysis that could not be more timely.

New Perspectives on its Causes, Courses, and Consequences The twentieth century has been called, not inaccurately, a century of genocide. And the beginning of the twenty-first century has seen little change, with genocidal violence in Darfur, Congo, Sri Lanka, and Syria. Why is genocide so widespread, and so difficult to stop, across societies that differ so much culturally, technologically, and politically?

That’s the question that this collection addresses, gathering a stellar roster of contributors to offer a range of perspectives from different disciplines to attempt to understand the pervasiveness of genocidal violence. Challenging outdated beliefs and conventions that continue to influence our understanding, Genocide constitutes a major contribution to the scholarship on mass violence. When the Second World War ended, Europe was in ruins. Yet, politically and socially, the years between 1943 and 1947 were a time of dramatic reconfigurations, which proved to be foundational for the making of today’s Europe. This volume hones in on the crucial period from the beginning of the end of Nazi rule in Europe to the advent of the Cold War. Through a series of interrelated case studies that span the entire continent, it demonstrates how the everyday experiences of Europeans during these five years shaped the transition of their societies from war to peace. The authors explore these reconfigurations on different scales and levels —the local and regional, the ethnic and national, and the international — with the purpose of enhancing our understanding of how wars end.

The Global City Debate Reconsidered

Losing a job has always been understood as one of the most important causes of downward social mobility in modern societies. And it’s only gotten worse in recent years, as the weakening position of workers has made re-entering the labour market even tougher. The Impact of Losing Your Job builds on findings from life course sociology to show clearly just what effects job loss has on income, family life, and future prospects. Key to Ehlert’s analysis is a comparative look at the United States and Germany that

enables him to show how different approaches to welfare state policies can ameliorate the effects of job loss— but can at the same time make labour insecurity more common. Martin Ehlert is a researcher at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center.

The idea of the “global city,” which focuses on globalisation’s impact on the social, f inancial, and political reality of cities in advanced economies, has become widely influential in the decades since its introduction—and yet the major issues in the “global city debate” remain unresolved. This book provides a systematic overview of the debate and associated theoretical approaches, as well as an argument for the need to test the framework’s experimental validity before the unresolved questions can be fruitfully addressed. By testing data from the Netherlands in the 1990s and 2000s, the author demonstrates the value of rigorous empirical scrutiny while offering fresh insights for the global city debate as a whole.

Since the time of Adam Smith, scholars have tried to understand the role moral sentiments play in modern life, an issue that became especially urgent during and after the 2008 global financial crisis. Previous explanations have ranged from the idea that modern society is built on moral values to the notion that modernisation results in moral decay. The essays in this interdisciplinary volume use the example of Dutch society and a wealth of empirical data to propose a novel theory about the ambivalent

Case Studies 1950–2010 Maritime trade is the backbone of the world’s economy. Around ninety percent of all goods are transported by ship, and since World War II, shipbuilding has undergone major changes in response to new commercial pressures and opportunities. Early British dominance, for example, was later undermined in the 1950s by competition from the Japanese, who have since been overtaken by South Korea and, most recently, China. The case studies in this volume trace these and other important developments in the shipbuilding and ship repair industries, as well as workers’ responses to these historic transformations.

The Indonesian province of Timor-Leste made international news when it decided to break away from Indonesia in 1999. The decision sparked deadly rampages by pro-integrationist militias, violence that only abated when the UN sent a force to maintain peace and help ease the way to actual independence. This book details the political history of Timor-Leste, both preceding and following the declaration of

independence, and it uses the events, consequences, and lessons of that period to help us understand what to expect for similar experiments in democracy building elsewhere in the world.

Breaking Down the State: Protestors Engaged continues the new effort to analyze politics as the interplay of various players within structured arenas that its companion volume, Players and Arenas: The Interactive Dynamics of Protest, started. It breaks down the state into the players that really matter, and which really make decisions and pursue coherent strategies, moving beyond the tendency to lump various agencies together as ‘the state’. Breaking Down the State brings together world-famous experts on the interactions between political protestors and the many parts of the state, including courts, political parties, legislators, police, armies, and intelligence services.

While India has been a popular subject of scholarly analysis in the past decade, the majority of that attention has been focused on its major cities. This volume instead explores contemporary urban life in a smaller city located in India’s Northeast borderland at a time of dramatic change, showing how this city has been profoundly affected by armed conflict, militarism, displacement, interethnic tensions, and the expansion of neoliberal capitalism.

Examining the increased mobility of people and information, scientific advances, global crises, and the unravelling of empires, Eurasian Encounters demonstrates that this time period saw an unprecedented increase in a transnational flow of politically and socially influential ideas. Bright red terra sigillata pots dating to the first three centuries CE can be found throughout the Western Roman provinces. The pots’ widespread distribution and recognisability make them key evidence in the effort to reconstruct the Roman Empire’s economy and society. Drawing on recent ideas in material culture, this book asks a radically new question: what was it about the pots themselves that allowed them to travel so widely and be integrated so quickly

into a range of contexts and practices? To answer this question, Van Oyen offers a fresh analysis in which objects are no longer passive props, but rather they actively shape historical trajectories. Astrid Van Oyen is a research fellow at Homerton College, University of Cambridge.

Financing Poor Relief through Charitable Collections in Dutch Towns, c. 1600–1800 In the Dutch Republic, charitable collections, which formed the financial backbone of many poor relief institutions, were regularly organised by both religious and secular authorities. This book examines both the policies of church boards and town councils in organising these charitable appeals, as well as the general population’s giving behaviour. Using archival sources from the towns of Delft, Utrecht, Zwolle, and ’s-Hertogenbosch, Daniëlle Teeuwen shows how these authorities deployed organisational and rhetorical tactics—including creating awareness, establishing trust, and exerting pressure— to successfully promote fundraising campaigns. Not only did many relief institutions manage to collect large annual sums, but contributions came from across the socioeconomic spectrum. Daniëlle Teeuwen works as a postdoctoral researcher at Wageningen University and Research Centre within the project 'Industriousness in an Imperial Economy'. Her research deals with women's and children's labor in the Dutch East Indies (c. 1815-1940).

Re-forming Texts, Music, and Church Art in the Early Modern North Our historical understanding of the Reformation in northern Europe has tended to privilege the idea of disruption and innovation over continuity — yet even the most powerful reformation movements drew on and exchanged ideas with earlier cultural and religious practices. This volume attempts to right the balance, bringing together a roster of experts to trace the continuities between the

medieval and early modern period in the Nordic realm, while enabling us to see the Reformation and its changes in a new light. Tuomas M. S. Art in Spain and Portugal from the Romans to the Early Middle Ages Routes and Myths In this colourfully illustrated book, Rose Walker surveys Spanish and Portuguese art and architecture from the time of the Roman conquest to the early twelfth century. For generations, scholarly discussions of such art have been complicated by a focus on maps of the pilgrimage roads and images of the Reconquista. Walker contextualizes these aspects by bringing together an exceptionally diverse range of academic studies, including work

previously familiar only to Hispanophone audiences. By breaking down chronological, regional, and disciplinary divides that have limited scholarship on the subject for decades, this book enriches the wider English-language literature on early medieval art.

Bede, Part 2 This newest volume in a long-running work of mapping the sources of Anglo-Saxon literary culture in England from 500 to 1100 CE takes up one of the most important authors of the period, the eighth-century monk-scholar known as the Venerable Bede. Bede is best known as the author of the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, which is one of the key sources for our historical and cultural knowledge of the period; this collection covers that and more, drawing on

manuscript evidence, medieval library catalogues, Anglo-Latin and Old English versions, citations, quotations, and more, putting Bede and his work in the context of his period. George Hardin Brown is professor of English and classics at Stanford University. Frederick M. Biggs is professor of English at the University of Connecticut.

Catalogue of Illustrated Beatus Commentaries on the Apocalypse and Study of the Geneva Beatus This is the first study to bring together all twenty-nine extant copies of the medieval Commentary on the Apocalypse, which was originally written by Spanish monk Beatus of Liébana. John Williams, a renowned expert on the Commentary, shares a lifetime of study and offers new insights on these strikingly illustrated manuscripts. As he shows, the Commentary responded to differing monastic needs within the shifting context of the Middle Ages. Of special interest is a discussion of the recently discovered Geneva copy: one of only three commentaries to be written outside of the Iberian Peninsula, this manuscript shows

both close affinities to the Spanish model and fascinating deviations from it in terms of its script and style of illustrations. John Williams (1928–2015) was distinguished professor emeritus of the history of art and architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. Therese Martin is a tenured scholar at the CCHS-Instituto de Historia in Madrid, currently conducting research on “Reassessing the Roles of Women as ‘Makers’ of Medieval Art and Architecture” with funding from the European Research Council.

The ca. 1518 Translation and the Middle Dutch Analogue, Mariken van Nieumeghen

Shaping Political and Cultural Identities in the Pre-Modern World

Mary of Nemmegen, a prose condensation in English of the Middle Dutch play Mariken van Nieumeghen, is an important example of the literature that was imported from Holland in the early part of the sixteenth century - literature that helped to establish an English taste for narrative prose fiction.

Focusing on language's political power, these essays discuss how representation - through language norms, plays and spectacles, manipulations and adaptations of texts and images - both constitutes and reflects a cultural milieu.

Clifford Davidson is Emeritus Professor of English and Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University. Ton Broos is Emeritus Professor of Dutch at the University of Michigan. Martin Walsh is Associate Professor of Theatre and teaches in the Residential College at the University of Michigan.

Telling Tales and Crafting Books Essays in Honor of Thomas H. Ohlgren This volume of essays focuses on the tale and its ability to create ‘mirth’ - or what modern audiences would often define as ‘happiness’ or ‘joy’ - and the significance that the book has had on the transference of this mirth to audiences. The book also celebrates the scholarship of Thomas H. Ohlgren, a medievalist whose work encompasses a number of different areas, but at the centre of which lives the power of the tale and its ability to create a lasting impression on readers both medieval and modern.

The medieval German poet known as Neidhart was one of the most important poets of his time. Set in the village among peasant maidens and their boorish male counterparts, Niedhart's satirical songs stand in marked contrast to courtly love songs and enrich our understanding of medieval literary culture. This book presents for the first time annotated English translations of a substantial collection of songs attributed to this prolific poet from the thirteenth-century Riedegg manuscript.
